BuzzJack Music Forum _ Indie, Rock and Alternative _ Doves - The Universal Want

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 13th June 2020, 12:28 PM

Since their return in 2018, Doves have been working on their long-awaited 5th album - the first since 2009's 'Kingdom of Rust'. And it looks like it's not too far away now!

A countdown to 5pm on Thursday (I think laugh.gif) is on their website, hopefully that will be the release of the lead single!

I've been rediscovering Doves tonight, so so good wub.gif

Indeed 'There Goes The Fear' is one of my favourite songs of the noughties! Imagine a indie song like that charting in the top 3 in 2020!

There Goes The Fear and Pounding are both fantastic songs. It's great to see Doves are coming back.

It was crazy how well There goes the Fear did
cos iirc it was only available for 1 day, it was released and deleted the same day, not sure why biggrin.gif

I really enjoy all four of Doves albums, they're a great band and definitely looking forward to hearing new stuff by them.

Blown away by this, it's absolutely stunning

Posted by: King Rollo 18th June 2020, 05:46 PM

Yes,it sounds very good to me.

I can't believe it has been eleven years... very much excited for this new album !

Posted by: Steve201 18th June 2020, 09:36 PM

What a great comeback, sounds kind of like drum and base in places or something Massive Attack would do.

There Goes The Fear sounds even better live. One of the best live songs I've heard.

The new song sounds pretty good too. Look forward to hearing more.

I would love to see them live!!

Weird to think the last time they dropped new music was around when I first joined BuzzJack!

I'm not familiar with their back catalogue but I remember liking 'Kingdom Of Rust' (the song) a fair bit at the time, this new song is quality as well, so nice to have them back.

'Prisoners' is out tomorrow at 5pm! It's got a lot to live up to, but the preview sounds really good

This is very typical for them but I really like it, definitely a welcome return.

A couple of plays in and I think I probably prefer it to Carousels already actually.

Posted by: Jester 9th July 2020, 05:26 PM

Another wonderful track. I needed this in my life and they have delivered!

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 9th July 2020, 06:28 PM

Wow, I think this album is going to be pretty fantastic! It's been announced as 'The Universal Want' and is out on September 11th!

Tracklisting:

1. Carousels
2. I Will Not Hide
3. Broken Eyes
4. For Tomorrow
5. Cathedrals of the Mind
6. Prisoners
7. Cycle of Hurt
8. Mother Silver Lake
9. Universal Want
10. Forest House

Sounds as epic as the first release, roll on the album in the autumn!

Posted by: Jester 10th July 2020, 09:56 AM

Prisoners has a touch of Twin Tapes to it imo. Or is it that Twin Tapes has a touch of Doves? laugh.gif

Didn't find 'Prisoners' to be as instant as 'Carousels' but it has grown on me with another listen as I hoped it would, 2 for 2 on these singles so far. Guessing there'll be at least 1 or 2 more songs out before the album given how short the gap between these first two songs was?

Posted by: Suedehead2 31st July 2020, 08:26 AM

There's a new remix of Carousels by The Comet Is Coming whose brilliant Summon The Fire was a BJSC entry.

Good promo for 'Carousels' getting played at the end of the BT coverage of the champions league final tonight!

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 23rd August 2020, 10:21 PM

Just heard about that! Hopefully it's uploaded to youtube

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 27th August 2020, 02:43 PM

'Cathedrals Of The Mind' is out now! 3/3 for me, can't wait for the album in a few weeks.

Posted by: dandy* 11th September 2020, 08:57 AM

Out today! I had a quick listen in the background this morning and it sounded really promising - very 90s/Verve sounding in places but that's no bad thing!

Posted by: Steve201 11th September 2020, 10:50 AM

On song number 4 so far and its absolutely bloody fantastic - epic sounding in fact with elements of 90s indie in Verve as you said but quite bluesy as well as the massive attack style songs like the single 'Carousel'.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 12th September 2020, 02:11 PM

What a fantastic album! It'll definitely need some more listens for me to take it all in. Hopefully it can't go to #1 next week!

Broken Eyes video:

This was a solid album although I do think 'Broken Eyes' was the only other song that quite stacks up to the quality of the first two singles unfortunately so I was hoping for a little better! ('I Will Not Hide' was also a bit more standout than the other album tracks, and I loved the outro of 'Universal Want' though it did just leave me wishing the whole song was like that).

Happy that they have got themselves another #1 album now anyway after the last one missed out by such a tiny margin.
