As we edge ever closer to fright night, we look now at one of the most proficient directors of the macabre, Tim Burton.

For decades he's explored the dark, weird and wonderful world of things that creep us out and he's managed to create a style that is instantly recognisable whilst maintaining humour as an essential part of the horrific. Whether he's tackling huge movie/art features and giving them his own spin, or allowing us into wacky trips of his mind through his cinema, he's managed to create a loyal fanbase as well as becoming one of the most recognisable cinema personalities.

Selected Filmography

His late 80s/early 90s stuff was by far his best era for me. His take on Batman was wonderful, particularly 'Returns' which is my favourite superhero film, and the fantastical 'Scissorhands' and 'Nightmare..." are other favourites. What have you seen, do you enjoy his style, are you a FAN?

I find Tim's films very hit and miss. A lot of the time he is all style over substance, but when he's good, there's very few who can touch him! My favourites of his are: 'Beetlejuice'; 'Edward Scissorhands' & 'Sweeney Todd'. I find 'Nightmare Before Christmas' to be his most overrated. It's so... bleh. Just doesn't do anything for me.

His renditions of 'Planet Of the Apes', 'Alice In Wonderland' (which is one of my fave Disney films) & 'Charlie & The Chocolate Factory' are absolute no go's. All 3 are disappointing and really should have been better, particularly Alice for me. He could do so much with it, but decided not to do enough with it.

I want to see 'Frankenweenie' and his 'Batman' films which I will make my way through one day. The trailer to 'Big Eyes' looks gorgeous though. Could this year be Amy Adams year, finally?

'Charlie & the Chocolate Factory' is near perfect in my eyes ohmy.gif I absolutely love it, it's quite a spectacle, enjoyable songs and Johnny Depp made such a great Willy Wonka.

I remember seeing 'Corpse Bride' later that same year and being quite "meh" on that one iirc.

His Batman films are both superb, easily two of the best in the series.

Totally butchered Charlie & The Chocolate Factory though, everything about that film was awful.

Big Eyes looks amazing though. Amy Adams is LIFE and hopefully she will FINALLY get that Oscar, which she should have won for Junebug, Doubt and American Hustle tbh.

I don't mind Charlie & The Chocolate Factory tbf, but it's not a film I'd really watch again in a hurry and it really falls flat compared to the original imo. It's about a 6/10 whilst the original is near perfect.

He can be fantastic when he wants to be - The Nightmare Before Christmas is an obvious classic and Frankenweenie & Corpse Bride are really good too, I love that beautiful style of his, other than that, he can be a bit 'style over substance' I agree, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory was great, but not quite as grandiose as it wanted to be.

I'm sorry but Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is waaay better than the original. It's so much more loyal to the book and the visuals are amazing, as you expect from Tim Burton. The Oompa Loompas were the only weaker aspect.

I can't wait to see Big Eyes and I hope Amy Adams finally wins her long deserved Oscar
Alice in wonderland is another amazing Burton film for me wub.gif and I still need to watch Frankenweenie which I have on DVD.
I hate corpse bride- something about it that is awful
