Over the next week, to celebrate Buzzjack's 10th anniversary, this thread will be everything about 2006 movies! From reviewing some of the years biggest hits, to underrated gems, to the box office successes and flops to the big movie news stories of the year, this should hopefully be a fun and interesting look back at a great year in movies!
However I would appreciate it if other people help and I am not by myself! So the 4 sections really are reviews, box office, news and awards! If you want to help towards any of them (it would be much appreciated), please send me a private message as soon as possible as hoping everything can get done this week! Later this evening, I will post some reviews and also an outlook on 2006 Animation so hopefully people will be interested in that

ANIMATION: 2006
Movies Released: Chicken Little- February Ice Age 2: The Meltdown- April Curious George- May The Wild- May Over The Hedge- June Cars- July The Ant Bully- August Monster House- August A Scanner Darkly- August Hoodwinked- September Open Season- October Barnyard- October Flushed Away- December Happy Feet- December Summary: 2006 was a very topsy-turvy year for animation. Some of these movies are in my favourite animated movies ever. 5 of them have made my worst list of the decade. This was also the year where the animation market started to boom with more and more titles being produced! Disney scored a hit with the not too fondly remembered Chicken Little. Ice Age smashed all expectations with a loved sequel which saw the franchise become one of the biggest animation titles around. Curious George was a cute movie adaptation from the TV show and 'Madagascar' rip-off The Wild bombed- both of those last two animations were released on the same weekend in the UK! Over The Hedge was somehow a hit, Cars saw another smash hit for Pixar but their first movie to not get stellar reviews, creepy animation Monster House thrilled audiences, The Ant Bully had a big-voice cast but was one of 2006's big bombs, A Scanner Darkly was a solid indie hit, Open Season did solid at the box office but received terrible reviews, the adorable Barnyard also did very well and fairytale based Hoodwinked was another hit. December saw Aardman come back with another well received movie for Flushed Away and toe-tapping penguins thrilled audiences around the world in the animated kind of musical Happy Feet. That was 2006 in animation! UK Box Office (In Dollars as don't know where to find pound!): 14. A Scanner Darkly- $1,778,192 13. Curious George- $2,731,997 12. The Ant Bully- $3,971,526 11. The Wild- $7,905,493 10. Barnyard- $8,799,153 9. Hoodwinked- $11,392,656 8. Monster House- $12,294,750 7. Open Season- $14,066,549 6. Flushed Away- $22,075,864 5. Chicken Little- $23,557,158 4. Over The Hedge- $24,429,407 3. Cars- $30,858,370 2. Happy Feet- $37,779,303 1. Ice Age: The Meltdown- $52,328,887 Top 3 were all top 10 for the year and the top 6 were all top 20 for the year! Fantastic year for animation in the UK. Thought Curious George did a lot better though  And didn't realise Happy Feet did that much Tomorrow I will be counting down my favourite to least favourite of the animations released in 2006, so if anybody wants to predict that would be great!

It really wasn't a great year for animations from the major studios was it, probably one of the worst!
Hoodwinked and Monster House are both fantastic though! Two great, unique films. Flushed Away and Happy Feet are alright too. |

 I will do my animated countdown tomorrow or Friday and also then will go month by month of 2006! Would try and do more but have 8 exams coming up (first one tomorrow) so don't have much time! More comments please

Key Movies: Brokeback Mountain- Received incredible reviews on release and also did fantastically at the box office. Was the favourite to win the Best Picture Oscar but it didn't which caused a lot of controversy due to many people to believe it only didn't win due to the storyline being about gay cowboys Match Point- Woody Allen movie with Scarlett Johansson which received good reviews Jarhead- War movie with Jake Gyleenhaal that had quite a strong box office run Memoirs Of A Geisha- Won quite a lot of Oscars on the visual sides of things and did well at the box office. Fun With Dick and Jane- Jim Carrey comedy that did well at the box office but isn't too well remembered now Underworld: Evolution- The 2nd (?) movie of the horror franchise Munich- Steven Spielberg's drama which received very good reviews and a few Oscar nominations Rumour Has It- Jennifer Aniston comedy Other Movies: Just Friends- Comedy with Ryan Reynolds Running Scared- Paul Walker Action Breakfast On Pluto- Well received limited release with Cillian Murphy Shopgirl- Well received limited release with Steve Martin Cry Wolf- Small Australian horror movie. Get Rich Or Die Tryin- 50 Cent movie The New World- Terrence Malick movie Cache (Hidden)- Michael Haneke movie that received great reviews Events: Brokeback Mountain, Capote, Crash (  ), Good Night And Good Luck and Munich are announced as the Best Picture nominees.Brokeback Mountain wins Best Drama at the Golden Globes Disney announced plans to acquire Pixar Clint Eastwood wins the lifetime achievement award from the Directors Guild Crash wins best ensemble at the Screen Guilds Awards Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo, Dirty Love, The Dukes of Hazzard, House of Wax and Son of the Mask are up for Worst Picture at the Razzies. Brokeback Mountain led the Oscar nominations with 8 and Crash, Good Night and Good Luck and Memoirs Of A Geisha all received 6 nominations. The only films from that bunch I've seen are:
Jarhead Just Friends Cry Wolf 'Jarhead' & 'Just Friends' are both good films. 'Just Friends' is one of my favourite rom-coms! 'Cry Wolf' I really can't remember much of at all tbh. I think it was decent iirc? |

 Want to see Brokeback, Match Point, Just Friends, Breakfast On Pluto, Munich and Rumour Has It though!At least I know I've seen some from February!

Received excellent reviews Chicken Little- Disney's movie about 'the sky is falling' which had great box office and received average reviews Final Destination 3- 3rd movie on the horror franchise Big Momma's House 2- Comedy sequel that did great at the box office Good Night And Good Luck- George Clooney's Oscar nominated drama Date Movie- The first of the many spin-offs by Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg Other Movies: Derailed- Clive Owen and Jennifer Aniston thriller North Country- Charlize Theron drama The Little Polar Bear 2- Animated sequel Proof- Well received drama Casanova- Period drama with Heath Ledger Aeon Flux- Horrifically reviewed Charlize Theron action movie Lucky Number Slevin- Action with Josh Harnett (remember when Hollywood were trying to make him the next big thing?!) Capote- Truman Capote drama which received terrific reviews on release The Fog- Badly reviewed horror remake Events: Wallace and Gromit won best animated movie at the Annie Awards (Does anyone know a good place to find out about events that happened?) My Ranking: 4. Zathura- Didn't really like this, found it pretty bad and forgettable. 3. The Little Polar Bear 2- Very cute animation and a lovely sequel. 2. Chicken Little- Funny and entertaining animation. 1. Big Momma's House 2- Remember laughing so hard in the cinema when I saw this, excellent movie packed with laughs.  Never been one of my favourite animated movies though. I'm also excited to see Brokeback Mountain as I purchased it the other day

(I have added in italics a synopsis of the movie from IMDB so hopefully if any films take your interest, you now know what they are about!) Key Movies: Syriana- George Clooney Oscar-winning drama thriller :A politically-charged epic about the state of the oil industry in the hands of those personally involved and affected by it. The Hills Have Eyes- Horror remake that did well at the box office: A suburban American family is being stalked by a group of psychotic people who live in the desert, far away from civilization. The Pink Panther: Remake of the classic which did well enough to receive a sequel: Bumbling Inspector Clouseau must solve the murder of a famous soccer coach and find out who stole the infamous Pink Panther diamond. V For Vendetta- Popular cult movie: In a future British tyranny, a shadowy freedom fighter, known only by the alias of "V", plots to overthrow it with the help of a young woman. Inside Man- Drama that received great reviews: A police detective, a bank robber, and a high-power broker enter high-stakes negotiations after the criminal's brilliant heist spirals into a hostage situation. Hostel: One of the films most significant with the 'torture porn' horror era: Three backpackers head to a Slovak city that promises to meet their hedonistic expectations, with no idea of the hell that awaits them. Failure To Launch: Comedy starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew McCoughnaghy: A thirtysomething slacker suspects his parents of setting him up with his dream girl so he'll finally vacate their home. Transamerica: Fantastically reviewed drama which Felicity Huffman received raves for her lead performance: A pre-operative male-to-female transsexual takes an unexpected journey when she learns that she fathered a son, now a teenage runaway hustling on the streets of New York. Firewall: Harrison Ford thriller: A security specialist is forced into robbing the bank that he's protecting, as a bid to pay off his family's ransom. Events: Dirty Love dominates the 26th Golden Raspberry Awards with 4 awards including Worst Picture and Worst Actress for Jenny McCarthy. Rob Schneider took home for Worst Actor for his performance in Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo. 'Walk The Line' is one of my absolute favourite films. Caught me by complete surprise!
'Final Destination 3' was the first of that franchise that I saw at the cinema, it was definitely the most "fun" and it's my 2nd favourite of the franchise and I'd argue that this is the most iconic of the series. 'Lucky Number Slevein' was dull af irc and 'Chicken Little' was dreadful. Believe it or not, being the fan of horror that I am, I really didn't like 'The Hills Have Eyes'! I found it boring. 'Hostel' however, I absolutely love. 'Kidulthood' was another "surprise". Found it to be quite a brilliant film! 'The Ringer' is one of my all time favourite "guilty pleasure" (so bad, but you can't help but love) films. Incredibly charming and heartwarming.

Key Movies: Ice Age: The Meltdown- Animated sequel that was a massive critical and box office success :Manny, Sid, and Diego discover that the ice age is coming to an end, and join everybody for a journey to higher ground. On the trip, they discover that Manny, in fact, is not the last of the woolly mammoths. She's The Man- Amanda Bynes comedy which has received quite a cult following: When her brother decides to ditch for a couple weeks in London, Viola heads over to his elite boarding school, disguises herself as him, and proceeds to fall for one of her soccer teammates. Little does she realize she's not the only one with romantic troubles, as she, as he, gets in the middle of a series of intermingled love affairs. Alien Autopsy- Ant and Dec movie: Humouristic reconstruction of the 1995 scandal when two British lads were accused of having faked a documentary from the Roswell incident in 1947. Scary Movie 4- 4th entry in the successful horror franchise: Cindy finds out the house she lives in is haunted by a little boy and goes on a quest to find out who killed him and why. Also, Alien "Tr-iPods" are invading the world and she has to uncover the secret in order to stop them. Take The Lead- Dancing movie with Antonio Banderas: The real story of a dance teacher who believed in the talent of a group of problem kids. Silent Hill- Horror movie based on the video game franchise: A woman goes in search for her daughter within the confines of a strange, desolate town called Silent Hill. Eight Below- Cute Disney movie with Paul Walker: Brutal cold forces two Antarctic explorers to leave their team of sled dogs behind as they fend for their survival. Slither- Horror Comedy which has picked up a bit of a following in the years since its release: A small town is taken over by an alien plague, turning residents into zombies and all forms of mutant monsters. Other Movies: The Dark- Generic horror movie: In mourning over the tragic drowning of their daughter Sarah, James and Adèle are visited by Ebrill, a young girl who claims she died 60 years ago - and bears a startling resemblance to Sarah. The Squid And The Whale- Well received drama: Follows two young boys dealing with their parents' divorce in Brooklyn in the 1980s. Rent- Film adaptation of the Broadway musical: This is the film version of the Pulitzer and Tony Award winning musical about Bohemians in the East Village of New York City struggling with life, love and AIDS, and the impacts they have on America. An American Haunting- Another horror movie: Based on the true events of the only case in US History where a spirit caused the death of a man. American Dreamz- Some talent show flop thing with Hugh Grant and an horrific title: The new season of "American Dreamz," the wildly popular television singing contest, has captured the country's attention, as the competition looks to be between a young Midwestern gal (Moore) and a showtunes-loving young man from Orange County (Golzari). Recently awakened President Staton (Quaid) even wants in on the craze, as he signs up for the potential explosive season finale. There are, however, chaotic forces at work that prevent them from making it in one piece. Freedomland- Some drama thingy that completely flopped: A black police detective must solve a strange case of a kidnapped boy and deal with a big racial protest. Events: Who knows? (Does anyone know a good place to find out about events that happened?) My Ranking: 3. Ice Age: The Meltdown- Hated this at the time but like it nowadays 2.
