7th January 1986

It's new in at 1 with another oldie - the 20 year anniversary reissue recharting Beatles double A side classic, keeping up the run of charting oldies, mostly. That means the actual top new track, West End Girls, has still only had 1 week on top in what otherwise would have been a 6 week-run on top if not for oldies.

A-ha rocket into the top 10 for 2 in a row, The Cars do it for the 3rd time, and Go West shoot into the 20 for the 3rd time. Highest new track is Pat Benatar, while Steve Harley, 12 years on from Judy Teen, teams up with ex-1978 chart-topper Sarah Brightman, now a serious musical star, for the Phantom duet. Fine Young Cannibals cover Elvis, Dire Straits dig deeper into Brothers In Arms, ABC enter a bit blue, and Grace Jones is besides herself at being a new entry with an old Edith Piaf French classic ballad. Literally. As is kate Bush, literally beside herself.

My faves in your chart that are on the rise are Sun Always Shines On TV and Hit That Perfect Beat, the latter definitely one of the best dance songs of the 80s imo. Sounds dancier and less poppy than most of the 80s Ni-NRG songs that made the chart.

As for Sun Always Shines On TV, it is definitely my favourite A-ha song.

Thanks Snakey, did you know The Snake the old Al Wilson soulfunk track? Fun. I like the Bronski Beat track but the change of lead vocalist left me a bit uncertain whether i approved or not - he had a less grating voice than Jimmy Somerville and had a cute appeal but I sometimes almost look at new singers as a new act and the "real" Bronski Beat became The Communards. I like HiNRG though anyway, when done well smile.gif

Never heard that Al Wilson track before I don't think, must listen.

Hi-NRG is good when done well, stuff like Bronski Beat, Communards and the Kim Wilde cover coming later in 1986 are excellent (the production of this latter one being rather similar in style to the New Rules 80s style Initial Talk remix that was released recently). I guess the Pet Shop Boys were Hi-NRG too and they made the sound much less cheesy of course with It's A Sin and Heart particularly.

Of course as you probably know there was another big game-changing track in dance coming later in 1986, this time bringing in a different new genre that is still popular today.

You missed three. ohmy.gif Firstly Love Can't Turn Around in 1986 (which was the first house track to make the UK chart, I can see why this was the first as it is more fun and camp, fitting in more with the HI-NRG songs by the likes of the Communards) and then the more underground sounding Jack Your Body and Jack The Groove in early 1987. But yes it wasn't until after Pump Up The Volume that house really started to become big in the charts as a trend.

Surprised to see a lot of the Christmas songs maintaining their position in this chart John, did you continue listening in January?

Ah yes, Jack-ing as a thing. I've tried to block it out my mind as it annoyed me! laugh.gif Love Can't Turn Around was a great record though, pumping dance much more to my taste cheer.gif

My charts tend to grow and gently decline, abrupt departures are quite unusual from inside the upper reaches, though the date of the chart is also a bit deceptive as I stupidly never dated my charts for a good 15 years and had to retrospectively align them with the BBC chart date based on backtracking laugh.gif

So the chart date may or may not be the day I did the chart biggrin.gif I did though tend to love xmas songs in those days and they hung around for ages frequently as they didn't chart in the UK charts that frequently (except Slade & John & Yoko), which meant most years they didn't qualify for mine - I only let oldies in if they made the UK chart listings. These days I'm sick to death of hearing most of them! laugh.gif

Love Can't Turn Around and Don't Leave Me This Way were the top 10 at the same time one week, great week for dance music in the charts!

Yes I prefer the slightly later song (early 1988) The Jack That House Built by Jack n Chill. Has much more power and energy to it I think with the production!

Hoping Hit That Perfect Beat makes your personal chart top 10 in your next chart here, despite your reservations about the new singer!

14th January 1986

It's back on top after a break of over a month, to give Pet Shop Boys one week on top in both 1985 and 1986 - it's unusual for records to do that in my chart, but hey it's a classic! Even holding off a brand new classic at 2 from a-ha. Go West get a second top 10 and Eurythmics an umpteenth, rare that they didn't hit my top 10. Broken Wings gets a big climb into the 20, and highest "new" entry is Radio Africa starting the theme of flops becoming hits second time round in 1986, and for this week the trend of loads of re-entries which get called "new" because it's a new year and I like to see chart runs in different years with as not part of the initial run.

King have yet another top 40 track - who recalled they had so many! Steve Harley and Sarah Brightman both get a first top 40 hit in years, thanks to Andrew Lloyd Webber (never hurts to have your hubbie write the songs), and Full Force rocket into the 30 with Alice, hip-hopping away, in mood if not literally. Fine Young Cannibals cover Elvis - Pet Shop Boys please take note! Sade overtakes Slade, new at 45 - that only works if you pronounce Slade as Slahday - and a famous Billy Ocean chart-topper debuts quite low-down: Romancing The Stone was the film, and indeed, at a 2017 Uptown Country Park 80's festival, Billy in fine voice, I decided to get going as it was getting tough anticipating the rush for the exit as his encore arrived.

Stevie Nicks fabulous I Can't Wait is new in at 58, as good as a Mac track, 5 Star's best single is at 61, give or take Rain Or Shine, Alexander O'Neal is in with Cherrelle - he will be back quite a lot, she won't. Talking of films, Eddie Murphy has a decent stab at a pop career, the recently sad loss of Phil Lynnot brings 19 into the chart, and Timmy Thomas is back for his only other chart entry that wasn't his awesome 1973 classic Why Can't We Live Together - as covered by Sade, in fact, on her album but never a single. A Remix would top my chart for Timmy in 1990.

That Win track apparently flopped officially but did well in your chart ohmy.gif decent tune!

The King track sounds very good on listening to it now. Don't remember hearing it before.

21st January 1986

It's a first week on top for a-ha's brilliant Sun Always Shines On TV, proper epic pop, and their second chart-topper in a row. Highest new entry is a return for a great flop track from 1985 (theme of the year again and again), Belouis Some's Imagination at 3, as Mr. Mister make the top 5. Another '85 flop hits the top 10, for Latin Quarter, Todd Rundgren is back at 23 with his biggest "hit" since the brilliant Hello It's Me went top 5 12 years earlier, and the equally brilliant I Saw The Light started his chart career in 1972.

Madonna's back with another minor hit back bigger, 1984's Borderline, Double's charming single enters at 31, and Five Star, Grace Jones, and Stevie Nicks all get deserved big leaps into the 40, and it's a 1979 Rapper's Return as the one that kick-started a whole genre returns at 44, while fellow early rap pioneer Kurtis Blow finally follows up his Christmas Rapping with If I Ruled The World just over 6 years on.

Drum Theatre were a good support band I saw at the time, and enter at 48, with the great Talk Talk single in at 50, Life's What You Make It making it 4 years of good singles. James Brown's last big hit is in with Living In America, a decade on since his last chart entry - though his song is still on my playlist as done by Brilliant. Gloria Estefan does the Conga, though not getting billing yet 2 years on from Dr. Beat, John Cougar is also back 4 years on from Jack And Diane, with extra unnecessary Mellencamp, and Clannad have a fab duet with Bono.
