It's been 20 years since Madonna performed 'You Must Love Me' at the 1997 Academy Awards, 6 years after she performed there for the first time so, just for fun, I put it to you to decide which of her two performances is the best.

Sooner of Later (1991)

You Must Love Me (1997)

'Sooner or Later' for me - one of her best performances, in fact. Obviously it's based on Marilyn but Madonna has a lot of fun with the role and adds tonnes of charm to the performance. The vocals always impress me even if they wouldn't be considered 'technically' perfect, but I've gone on lots before about how that doesn't interest me when such emotion and character is portrayed. It's one I can watch over and over; it's just got it all.

That's not to say 'You Must Love Me' isn't stunning as well. It's complete contrast of 'Sooner or Later' in style and sound, but still packs a punch. You can tell how much she's learned about singing from Evita and you can see the concentration in delivering a sincere and spectacular vocal performance.
