This is rather sad news I have to report today. MRIB have informed MSN, that they will no longer be producing UK Album or Singles Charts, as of now. The decision comes from the ever growing popularity of Downloads, and the virtual death, of the physical single.
MRIB was formed by the late Barry Lazell, in September 1981. It grew from the ashes of the magazine, "Record Busines". They began doing a chart for Independant Radio, in April 1978. So, after 30 years the team, that brought us Britain`s most up to date chart, as in the Network Chart will no longer produce Album/Singles charts. Originally, some of the team were doing a chart, for EMI (which started in 1957). That was around exactly the same time, that the BBC started their own charts, for PICK OF THE POPS, and on to the later TOP OF THE POPS. Rather sad news. However the team at Chartshow TV will be running their own top 40 3-7pm on Saturdays, from the 26th April. On our MRIB chart thread, which will change it`s name (obviously)! I (or Trevs) will run maybe the chartshow chart top 40, depending on a decision. So, we will carry on the thread of Films, Dvds, Albums, and Singles charts, with the continuation of vintage UK MRIB charts 1957 - 2008. May I (on behalf of Trevs) and myself thank everyone, that has made the MRIB charts thread, so popular for Buzzjack, over the past 8 months. Oh I just read the post again and it's the UK charts - but what are MRIB? I thought the OCC compile the UK charts?

I don't want to sound disrespectful to MRIB but i regard them as more like "saturday midweeks", because it gives us an idea on the OCC chart on Sunday.

Where as MRIB compiled a record chart, and sold the rights to other companies, like Capital Radio/Smash Hits/MSN. It now means that, only MILWARD BROWN and Chartshow tv will research record charts. It`s a shame, because on a Saturday MRIB, had the most up to date researched chart, even ahead of Fridays MILWARD BROWN mids. It also has to be said that MRIB do a great deal of work/data with Vodafone, msn, and many other well known brands. As dave said earlier mrib`s founder Barry Lazzell, passed away a few years ago. Oh dear, what a sad day, its a further nail in the coffin for the physical single, we can be seeing a download chart pretty soon, let's hope they don't add flipping airplay to the official chart to balance things up

MRIB stands for Music Research Information Bureau. It is a shame that
it has ceased doing Music Charts. However, I used it as a 'Guide', to give me an idea as to how the 'Official' Chart may look on a Sunday Evening. The MRIB Singles & Albums Top 10's used to be Published in the 'Sunday Mirror' & 'The People' on a Sunday Morning. At least they were in the later Years of the MRIB Chart - but, first the 'Sunday Mirror' ceased printing them, & then 'The People' stopped. They base them around sales to Thursday, and their video playlist. But the playlist percentage is not that high, so doesn`t affect the chart that much. I mean it is no where as heavily weighed down, with airplay as the silly Hit40uk, put it that way
