BuzzJack Music Forum _ Television _ Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire is returning to ITV soon with ordinary contestants ie not celebrities. No host officially announced yet but rumours are that it won't be Chris Tarrant but Jeremy Clarkson!

Is it too soon to bring it back and what do you think of Clarkson as host?

Posted by: Dobbo 4th March 2018, 06:47 PM

Used to love this show back in its heyday before they utterly mutilated it with the timer & all the other useless gimmicks.

I'm very intrigued to see how Jeremy Clarkson is as a host of this.

Posted by: Crazy Chris 4th March 2018, 06:48 PM

They're asking for contestants on their Facebook page.

Posted by: T Boy 4th March 2018, 06:53 PM

I don’t think we need anymore Jeremy Clarkson tbh

Posted by: Crazy Chris 4th March 2018, 06:55 PM

I don't like the idea of producers choosing the contestants via auditions now as they do on other quiz shows. The phone question and random picking by computer so looks and personality didn't matter was fine. Now I bet just the photogenic and bubbly people get on. Hope they still do fastest finger first.

Jeremy Paxman would be better

Posted by: JosephSprayberry 4th March 2018, 07:04 PM

I guess a revival of this could be good if they manage to freshen up the formula a little, without losing what made the original run so good!

Jeremy Clarkson, however, is not the answer. Please god no.

He's great on University Challenge when he pressured all those know-it-alls but I wouldn't like him on this if they're gonna resort back to the "you only have 3 milliseconds to answer" which completely erases the tension & joy of watching people mulling over whether to risk crazy amounts of money.

Posted by: Mack. 4th March 2018, 08:15 PM

Simple go back and stick to fastest finger first, no auditions, no gimmicks with the timings, changing the questions from 15 to 12. Or any 'swap' lifelines and no Jeremy Clarkson.

Keep the original formula. or show it as 'live'.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 4th March 2018, 09:03 PM

Oh I loved this so much as a child so I'd love to see it back, that said, with Chris Tarrant plz. Jeremy Clarkson is just...not a prospect we should be entertaining.

Posted by: _jase 4th March 2018, 11:19 PM

OMG YES. I absolutely adore the show, but they can piss right off with Clarkson sick2.gif

Posted by: Liаm 4th March 2018, 11:27 PM

I would be here if not for that utter waste of oxygen "presenting" it.

The format was a bit slow at times but I loved the tension it created, it was perfect easy Saturday night viewing.

For many years it was on Tuesday evenings. Started on Tuesdays too IIRC. They moved it to Saturdays much later.

Jeremy Clarkson confirmed as new host. To start with and to gauge public reaction, seven new episodes will air on consecutive nights over one week this autumn, the 25th Anniversary of the show's start. Said to be the original format with 15 question, three lifelines and no timer.

Posted by: Dobbo 9th March 2018, 08:47 AM

Glad it's the original format, will definitely be interested in this now! Just wonder how seriously Clarkson will take it or will it be another Robot Wars? laugh.gif

Posted by: gavindeejay 9th March 2018, 09:24 AM

Will be interesting to see Clarkson as the new host. I wonder why Tarrent didn’t return?

It's the 20th anniversary I believe it is. Please no twists with this.

Because it is a tired, old format - and for one thing £1 million in 1998 is now worth £1,655,181 due to inflation so it's not actually that much money anymore - I suspect there are many houses worth more than that in the SE of England.

Posted by: kye 10th March 2018, 05:37 PM

£1,000,000 is not actually that much money anymore? on what planet?
it’s still far and away the biggest prize you can win on tv regardless of inflation.

Agreed. I wouldn't mind half a million never mind a million.

When you compare this potential jackpot to the likes of Pointless & The Chase it still absolutely dwarfs them. One day I'ma apply for one of these shows...

Why not make "one of these days"...today? Here's the http://www.itv.com/beontv/shows/whowantstobeamillionaire.

I don't think that Jeremy Clarkson will make a decent host of this. Then again, if in 1998 you thought that the bloke from Tiswas & Man O Man would end up hosting the show for over 10 years and gaining ratings in excess of 15 million, people would've thought you were crazy.

Posted by: Mack. 30th April 2018, 07:44 PM

ITV have confirmed the start date to be Saturday May 5th at 9 p.m. for 7 consecutive nights

Posted by: Brett-Butler 1st May 2018, 08:06 PM

New lifeline announced, which is "Ask The Host", which could provide interesting. Also being introduced is the ability to set your own 2nd safe point, rather than the traditional £32,000, which doesn't strike me as interesting straight away.

Posted by: Jade 5th May 2018, 09:18 PM

I'm enjoying the return of this! The implementation of the host lifeline was a good move I think.

I thoroughly enjoyed that, Jeremy Clarkson was way more natural in the role than I expected and I'm quite happy to say he proved me wrong in just about every way lol.

Posted by: Suedehead2 5th May 2018, 10:05 PM

Clarkson was a lot better than I had expected. He seems pretty relaxed and proved to be a good host. The ability to et the second safety net is an intriguing change. It'll be interesting to see how far people take that.

A nice cheap start for ITV / the production company tonight laugh.gif

I'm enjoying this, on one set of questions I got easily to 32,000 without using a lifeline laugh.gif the coriander question, I just took a guess as the cilantro started with a C heehee.gif

Jeremy Clarkson as a host is very good actually, "got to go to the bathroom, let's take a break" Ha

Yesterday's question over the Qwerty keyboard, it was so obvious its Salad, ring a friend... Cheese laugh.gif if you use a keyboard all the time its so easy to work out.

I'm loving this being back on so much! The screaming at TV is real *.*

Posted by: danG 6th May 2018, 10:13 PM

this is amazing! Clarkson is better than I thought he'd be too.

Posted by: Chez Wombat 6th May 2018, 11:11 PM

So yeah this is actually pretty good. I loved this show so much back in the day and it's very much the same with some interesting add-ons (how awkward that the host could lose them money kink.gif) it's great seeing that again and playing along. And yeah, Jeremy isn't too unbearable here and actually rather funny, so that's a nice surprise.

Posted by: gavindeejay 7th May 2018, 08:03 AM

Really enjoying Clarkson presenting this. Hopefully more episodes will come later on in the year

Posted by: Dobbo 7th May 2018, 12:42 PM

Really enjoying this so far. Seems a lot more relaxed than the original series & Clarkson's quips are generally on the money without going too far.

Although that seems to have brought about a CBA attitude from the contestants, like losing without using a single lifeline? That's the sort of stuff I'd do on the app with nothing to lose.

Posted by: Liаm 7th May 2018, 09:17 PM

I DESPISE Clarkson like you wouldn't believe but I'm also really enjoying this! I think it is maybe a bit *too* relaxed as above though, there isn't that same intensity as the old version but that could get a bit drawn out and dull at times so I do enjoy this as well. It's just a really nice easy and enjoyable quiz watch on an evening which sometimes is all you need!

Posted by: troublepink 8th May 2018, 04:34 PM

Loving what I've seen so far, but I probably wouldn't have watched if Clarkson wasn't presenting. Found the original WWTBAM boring.
I hope at least one person wins really big money though, I'm guessing we would know if someone had won the million? I remember it used to be all over the papers if anyone ever got the big prize.

Posted by: Klaus 8th May 2018, 06:11 PM

Not really a big fan of Clarkson either but he really is brilliant on this! I thought it was an odd choice but it really has worked so much better than I thought.

I’m glad it had that break too because I was completely fed up and bored of the show in the last few years of its original run but I’ve actually been excited to watch this! One of the improvements is that it drags on a lot less as I was fed up with each question taking like 5 minutes each before. Although it maybe has gone the other way where people immediatley answer or use a lifeline with like no thought. It maybe is a bit too laidback as people have said, but definitely a step in the right direction for me.

“You go home with £1,000”

This really is getting boring fast when everyone lacks the intelligence the show needs. Maybe its because I’m older but I swear the questions are much easier higher up than they used too! Good job it is over a week as I think everyone would have switched off by Wek 6 if it was weekly.

Hopefully, if the show returns, they pick some smarter contestants.

To be fair, that wasn't the sort of question you could work out if you didn't know the answer. OTOH, there have been rather a lot of questions where - even allowing for the pressure of being in the studio - the contestants seem to be lacking in common sense.

Posted by: Mack. 9th May 2018, 09:25 PM

I think it might be the earliest someone has used a lifeline on Millionaire with the old chestnut question. Historically they would pick 'Ask The Audience ' first.

Posted by: Suedehead2 9th May 2018, 09:37 PM

There's always been the odd early question on a subject like Coronation Street or celebrities where I might need to ask the audience.

Posted by: Brett-Butler 9th May 2018, 09:56 PM

Could be worse. You could get the 1st question wrong, which has happened more than once in the US edition. When I was in America I got to meet this guy who didn't get off the starting block -

Posted by: Kath 9th May 2018, 10:17 PM

I just can't believe that the Oxford student needed to waste a lifeline on the heliocentric question. The contestants this time around do seem to be rather dim.

I do like the chap from Halifax though and I'm loving JC as the host on this (and I normally detest Clarkson) he moves things along speedily and doesn't waste time with inane waffle like Tarrant did.

Posted by: Common Sense 5th March 2019, 06:02 PM

I actually knew the answer to the million quid question as British PM's is my specialist subject so I knew Churchill was never Foreign Secretary. It would have been far too easy for so much money if they'd have asked about more recent Prime Ministers as he said he hoped they'd be. For example John Major was FS and Chancellor but only for short periods. Anyway he did well to get 500k. I think we'd have heard if he'd got the million.

No it wasn't. He would have gone for Eden. He's said today that he had a vague inkling that he's never read anything about Churchill being FS but only an inkling and still would have guessed Eden. They're saying on DS that it was an easy last question but it's only easy if you know the answer and he didn't and I bet millions of viewers didn't. Was surprised that he'd to ask the audience which fruit was in black forest gateau. Mind you my wife said raspberries when it first came up! She knew it was a red one lol as could picture them.

With 6 new contestants who can each have 3 "phone a friend " nominations, are there 18 members of staff scattered all over the country on the off chance that one might be called?

There must be unless they gather some of them together in a single location.

I've auditioned for Mastermind on 5 separate occasions. I never made it on the show though, the general knowledge usually trips me up (although given that it's Mastermind, there's nothing "general" about it). No surprises what my specialist subject was (one which someone else chose in 2016).

I got the same score as the contestant on that occasion. Obviously, I didn't have the pressure of the chair and the spotlight; OTOH, I didn't spend any time revising.

As for the general knowledge, I get much better scores now than I did in my teens and twenties. I can usually beat at least one of the contestants (I beat three last week). I think it's just that I've had a lot longer to learn stuff rather than the questions being easier.

Going to watch this on catch up.

Such a shame I have a free house for a week as I have nobody to play along with laugh.gif

My Dad is usually the opposite to me. He’s good at the sport questions and politics where as I don’t have a clue.

I very often find on quiz shows if somebody gets a question wrong I always seem to know it!

I think the things I know a lot on are things most people don’t. Like the charts, reality TV etc.

I remember instantly knowing the Spice Girls question last series before the answer even come up!

Sounds like I need to watch tonight’s!

The question the other night what the woman lost over 90K on I knew the answer too quite confidentially from studying Tourism for my degree and then from doing cabin crew training I’m good at questions on where countries are or what sea is where etc.

I surprise myself when I watch this with some things I know it’s only really sport where I’m absolutely clueless unless it’s a total obvious question like when did England win the World Cup laugh.gif

But the question the other day on England managers I wouldn’t have had a clue at that.

I like to watch this with my dad as we’re usually like polar opposite with what we know past like the 8,000 pound mark.

At least the contestant had dismissed Judy Garland for precisely that reason. I had done as well as Wizard Of Oz is one of the few films where I know its year of release. I'd dismissed Julie Andrews for the same reason as the contestant as well - I knew Sound Of Music was 1965 and couldn't believe that she was nearly 40 when that was made. However, that still left me with two choices!

I have occasionally known the million pound question, including the one with the person who was disqualified for cheating. I knew that one before the answers came up. It just happened to be something (what is the name of the number that is one followed by a hundred zeroes) I'd found out when I was about ten and always remembered laugh.gif

I think we can assume most BJ members would have loved to have that question laugh.gif To be fair to the contestant, her logic was reasonable. Those song titles do seem to fit with Nicki Minaj's image rather more than Ariana Grande's.

Jeremy Clarkson really irritates me on this show. He's just so nasty to the contestants - not in a jokey Chris Tarrant way either.

I am really enjoying having the show back, and I was SCREAMING at the TV during that Ariana Grande question although thought the contestant's logic was brilliant considering she obviously had no idea.

Just checking, the TT started in 1907. Indy 500 was 1911,Le Mans 1923 and Monaco 1929. They are all earlier in time than I thought they would be.

I knew the estate agent answer question too. And then would’ve guessed at some of the others like the Rugby being named after the town it was first played.

Christina had a good deal questions wise. Was impressed as much as 95% of the audience knew the jonas brothers names though either a young audience or just an audience who knew at least one name of another band but I was expecting more like 65% or smth.

I know! I guess some of them may have looked at certain stuff they didn’t know it’s hard to guess what kind of music questions come up it could be a really obvious one what almost everyone knows (like Katy Perry one) but when it’s who’s had most #1s etc it’d harder.

If I was succcesful to get on this show I’d definitely brush up and research sport but it’s what sport would come up I could spend hours perfecting knowledge on football to get a rugby question or vice versa. I'm happy for them to let us know beforehand, as long as they don't tell us in advance who it is that wins it. There'll still be a bit of mystery involved, and it means that people will want to watch until they see who actually wins it, which will help ratings.

Very impressive from Donald to win the million having used only one lifeline and he already kind of worked out the answer to his 50/50 question. It's just a shame that there was no other outcome possible due to hints from ITV and also there no being enough time for anyone else to play on the last episode of the series. Donald was brilliant! But it was kind of very suited to him he was lucky that the questions just fell into his area of expertise and were stuff he’d taught or had obvious keen interests in.

I mean if I was on there and I somehow managed to get questions on the UK charts, popular culture and travel geography id get far too (we’ll maybe not £1 million far but he did have an advantage) We’ll never know what would’ve happened if his questions were different as all of his questions (for me) were more stuff someone of his age would know he was lucky he didn’t get things on the current UK charts or something on celeb gossip laugh.gif But it was a real moment.

Was Donald the final contestant to be filmed for this series or is the series not necessarily filmed in order? I had a hunch all week that they’d not show the millionaire until the last show.

Shamefully (given my interest in the subject) I would've gone for John Major as I knew he was chancellor & assumed he'd done the other two at some point under Thatcher, although Callaghan would've been my 2nd guess. Must try harder.

What was it? Let me guess which politican has held the four great offices of state?

Yes, popular pub quiz question too apparently.

Yeh I knew it was Callaghan too!

Wasn’t great at any of those jobs though lol. The Liveral leader in the 30s Simons was all of them but PM I think too!

Major was PM, Foreign and Chancellor.

Posted by: Steve201 12th September 2020, 11:34 AM

He was a quick rider as considering how influential he was he only entered the commons in 79 and left in 97 I think after his defeat in the eldction!

Posted by: Crazy Chris 12th September 2020, 04:57 PM

Major was only Foreign Secretary for three months and Chancellor for two months but was Chief Secretary To The Treasury for 2 years. His only budget was the first to be televised live.

Posted by: Suedehead2 12th September 2020, 05:29 PM

There were suggestions when Judith Keppel won that the questions were deliberately chosen to play to her strengths.

JOhn Major left the Commons in 2001, not 1997. He sat on the backbenches in the 1997-2001 parliament. He was Chancellor for almost a year, not two months.

Yes 13 months actually, Oct. 1989 to Nov. 1990. Sorry my mistake.

Posted by: Steve201 13th September 2020, 09:54 AM

Yeh forgot Major obviously won his seat as sitting PM in 97. Be interesting to see how many times he was in the Commons between 97-2001 though!

Did anyone else (esp Gaga stans) get the Salvador Dali question about the telephone being a lobster?

That was one my mam and dad were like how the hell did you get that? But I remembered around the time telephone was out she wore that huge silver lobster on her head laugh.gif

It's an old cliché but it doesn't matter how you know the answers! I knew that one without the Gaga reference. I must have come across it at some point laugh.gif

Two lifelines in the first two rounds and the iconic moment of not knowing whether if it was Keith Chegwin or Keith Richards in the Rolling Stones.

A classic moment. And he won 125k laugh.gif

I think that might be the first time someone has used lifelines on the first two questions but he did very well in the end.

Posted by: Dot Branning 25th July 2021, 11:51 AM

I was watching it last night and after he got the Rolling Stones and Spending A Penny questions wrong, I jokingly said I bet he goes on to get a million now.... and then he almost did! laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Posted by: Mack. 25th July 2021, 02:54 PM

Again fair enough to Conor, I'm not there with the lights and everything. He did very well in the end and won £125k.

Oh dear. Harry Redknapp has gone away with nothing after getting the £1000 question wrong. ohmy.gif

He really messed that up. He obviously had the million pounds in mind by setting his safety net high and only using one lifeline on the £64000 question.
