Reception.

King blogged about her reaction to when she first saw the video: suddenly we got a call from our management telling us to come into the office to watch our video for 'If This Is Love' for the first time ever! Ahhh we were so nervous and so excited! We all shot up there as fast as we could and all I can say is... 'Oh my God, it is amazing!' We were so happy, Ness (Vanessa White) and I even started crying! We all ran out of the office after and had a group hug (yes, my idea, you know I like to cheese things up, haha). I wanted to run out onto the street and shout 'Hey everyone our music video rocks!

PopSugar positively reviewed the video, saying they loved the group's logo and walk in unison. Following the release of the music video, Nadia Mendoza of The Sun said that Girls Aloud better watch out because The Saturdays could steal their crown as sexiest girl group, further mentioning: "The fivesome are injecting some glamour back into the charts."[Popjustice positively reviewed the music video, saying: "As well as being a nice video featuring some pretty ladies in colourful frocks, it's a brilliant piece of suggestive film making which clearly signposts several important factors for the viewer.

The performance was SO bad ohmy.gif

I remember they were a lot better on tour, but on TV it looked terrible!

That performance was absolutely terrible. Shockingly bad.

The horrible 90s-styled dresses, the dodgy dancing, the out of tune vocals. WTF @ that :|

It's no achievement that The Saturdays got playlisted by Radio 1. It certainly wasn't off the back of them being themselves. Polydor are PLOWNG a huge amount of money into them, taking a big risk in the process. Rather than slowly courting interest they're going all out to get them heard. They'll be paying huge amounts to TV and Radio to play 'This Is Love'.

It's a high risk strategy as I said. Polydor could have done with testing the waters tbh first. The girl group market is certainly small and in a current music climate emphatic on organic and creative mediums I wonder if a group so glaringly manufactured and as soulless as The Saturdays will be able to make it big.

But the fact Polydor have thrown so much money at them to get them played everywhere means they'll have a semi-hit irrespective of quality/interest. We'll just have to see if it's enough for the record label in a few months time...

The Saturdays will never be in the same league as Yazoo. I'm by no means a fan of Yazoo but their music has had a significant effect on the musical landscape of the last 20 years. Whereas The Saturdays are a manufactured plastic girl group who probably will not even be here in 5 years time. Let alone 25 years later and more like Yazoo.

As for the better vocals on ITIL well, it's auto-tune, they can't sing it live as they've already proved so computerised is perhaps a better descrption of their vocal abilities.

My words to yourself a few pages back in this thread seem expectantly fitting don't they?

QUOTE(PeytonDavis @ Jul 7 2008, 11:29 PM) *
Can I just say... I'm all for a debate, but half of that wasn't a debate.
It was basically non-fans p***ing the fans off by putting The Saturdays down.
The band haven't even released ONE single, so how can anyone feel so strongly about disliking them?
I just feel like the people who argued The Saturdays were bad were doing it basically to cure boredom.
A lot of the arguments weren't even related to the band... "what music was like when I grew up", "this unsigned band", "that under-rated act".
While I understand that this is a forum and you're free to like or dislike whatever you want to, please can we keep the negativity to where it is needed.
i.e not -post- "So, the single..."-reply- "It's $h!te". Totally unneeded.

On that note. I apologise if I have said anything in here that has offended anyone.
It was intended, but I do apologise for it tongue.gif

Do you think If This Is Love was a good single to launch The Saturdays?
Do you still enjoy If This Is Love?
Are you surprised that If This Is Love managed to go top 10?

Do you still enjoy If This Is Love? Of Course
Are you surprised that If This Is Love managed to go top 10? Nope, it is flawless

I remember hearing it on the radio before I knew who they were and who was in the band and i was instantly hooked on the song. It took me a couple of days to find out what the song was and who it was by. I really thought it was a fantastic debut tbh.

Posted by: AdamAloud 27th January 2015, 10:28 AM

I first heard the song about a month before the 'Tangled Up' tour for Girls Aloud started. I'd heard of this new girlband supporting them and naturally I wanted to check out if they were any good. So I downloaded 'If This Is Love' from Girls Aloud Media (</3 gone but not forgotten!) and I absolutely loved it! It was like listening to a Girls Aloud song if they were around in the 80's. It was around then I started watching the flip videos on their site (the days when they were anything from 5 - 10 minutes long! Not the crappy ones we get now) and instantly fell in love with them as a pop band. It's by no means a 'classic' track in terms of themselves or even girlbands in general, but I have many happy memories of the song and the time it was from. I get very nostalgic every time I hear it.

I was never a big fan of This Is Love and had no idea about iTunes etc when it charted. I'm surprised it managed to do as well as it did with some laughable promotion. I'm guessing miming was more around 6 years ago etc in comparison to know but I'm surprised they managed a top 10 hit with half arsed performances.

Never really quite loved this song and I always regarded Up as their true debut laugh.gif

It would have been interesting how things would have turned out for the 'Chasing Lights' era had they choose 'Up' instead of 'If This Is Love'! 'Up' is their signature single without a shadow of a doubt but 'If This Is Love' helped them become noticed.

What interests me most about Chasing Lights (and If This Is Love/Up as well), was how Wordshaker would have panned out had they stuck with their colours! kink.gif

Posted by: Ultraviolence1989 28th January 2015, 10:54 PM

I really liked if is is love and remember seeing it a lot on the music channels back in 2008 wub.gif

Posted by: JSG 28th January 2015, 10:58 PM

I think the problem with Wordshaker was the really quick shift of sound between singles I mean ending the CL era on Work and then Pushing on into FIO. They should have released Ego.

I feel like 'If This Is Love' is pretty underrated. It's a solid pop song! wub.gif

It provides a lot of great memories of summer 2008 for me. I met them / saw them more times during the 'If This Is Love' promotion than at any other time in their careers! laugh.gif The Up/Keep Her/Issues/If This Is Love set list though. heart.gif Keep Her with the "ribbons routine"... amazing.

Posted by: Joe. 30th January 2015, 12:18 PM

I agree it's really under-rated too. The only thing is, the production is a bit underwhelming, it sounds a bit demo. I think with more expensive sounding production it could have been a bit bigger. Though 120k is farily respectable for such an underrated track.

it reminds me of my first gay club experiences
