Today marks 30 years since the release of 'Bad Girl', the third single released from 'Erotica'. It was a moderate chart success, with peaks including #3 in Italy, #10 in the UK and #36 in the US (it was Madonna's first not to reach the Top 20 in the US, breaking a chain of 27 Top 20 hits). The music video would be Madonna's fourth and final collaboration with acclaimed director David Fincher, following 'Express Yourself', 'Oh Father' and 'Vogue'. I wasn't impressed by Bad Girl to begin with. I thought it sounded like Madonna was straining her voice to sing the verses and it was just a bit boring.
I didn't think it would reverse her chart fortunes and it didn't. No.36 in the US was a big thump that she was losing her audience. But of course the UK artwork was amazing and the video was incredible and now I appreciate the song so much more. |

Love Bad Girl, always a special place in my heart.
It was part of a fast declining commercial period for her, so much so they rush released Fever 4 weeks later. |

I actually really love this song, whenever I play this I belt along to it.
I can see why it wasn't her biggest success though, it's not the most commercially viable or accessible song in the world ever. |

An 'Erotica' highlight, love the melancholic feel to it and Madonna really characterises the mood of the song through her voice. It adds another layer to the album's exploration of sex, something beyond the initial shock value portrayed from its lead single and the Sex book. The video captures the song perfectly too, as well as being cinematically a great watch.
The single cover is one of my favourites.

The video is such a cinematic experience! The song is great too: moody, brooding and sexy while not being as outlandishly so as some of the other songs on the album it features on.
