This is the heat covering the first (nearly) three decades of the charts from 1952-1979. We expect that for many of you this is the set of songs that will be the most unfamiliar, and hence we are allowing longer for this heat than for the others. The deadline is Sunday 25th September at 23:59.

Please do vote, but do familiarise yourself with any songs you don't know first.

Here is the information thread explaining the background which can be used for any questions: http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=256958

To vote, please rank all the songs on the following scale:
+25 - your worst
+24 - your second worst
...
+1 - your least bad

The contenders:
Stargazers - I See the Moon (1954)
Vera Lynn - My Son, My Son (1954)
Pat Boone - I’ll Be Home (1956)
Lonnie Donegan - My Old Man’s a Dustman (1960)
Mike Sarne & Wendy Richard - Come Outside (1962)
Ken Dodd - Tears (1965)
Petula Clark - This Is My Song (1967)
Engelbert Humperdinck- The Last Waltz (1967)
Esther and Abi Ofarim - Cinderella Rockefella (1968)
Lee Marvin - Wand’rin’ Star (1970)
Dana - All Kinds of Everything (1970)
Clive Dunn - Grandad (1971)
Middle of the Road - Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep (1971)
Donny Osmond - Puppy Love (1972)
Lieutenant Pigeon - Mouldy Old Dough (1972)
Chuck Berry - My Ding-a-ling (1972)
Little Jimmy Osmond - Long Haired Lover From Liverpool (1972)
Ray Stevens - The Streak (1974)
Telly Savalas - If (1975)
Windsor Davies & Don Estelle - Whispering Grass (1975)
Billy Connolly - D.I.V.O.R.C.E (1975)
JJ Barrie - No Charge (1976)
Brian and Michael - Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs (1978)
Rod Stewart - Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? (1978)
Lena Martell - One Day at a Time (1979)

The YouTube playlist for this round - please use this for familiarisation:

And finally here is the Spotify playlist for the whole contest, though please note it is missing the Telly Savalas and Billy Connolly tracks from this round:

I have a huge soft spot for 'Wand’rin’ Star' laugh.gif unfortunately the version on Spotify at the moment isn't the proper vocalist, so consult YouTube for the true depth of Lee's dulcet tones.

It's probably not a good idea to have 25 separate YouTube embeds in one post btw - better to put them in a playlist and just link to that.

There are quite a few on here that I don't remember at all (I might have missed the listenthroughs for some of them) but I'll try and make sure to find a moment to refamiliarise myself at some point kink.gif

The top 5 are all utterly heinous, whether through outdated morals or "humour", a lot of the others aren't awful, they're just super boring and forgettable that they all merge together. The last 5 are all quite fun, I have no disdain for them (Lee Marvin in particular was very unique and I wouldn't say bad at all!)

Preach Chez x the only negativity I have towards 'Wand’rin’ Star' is that it blocked 'Let It Be' from getting to #1 laugh.gif

Familiar with many of the songs unfortunately but had another listen through them all today. Well done on the shortlist here, so many of these (especially everything in the top half) are truly awful laugh.gif

I'm not overly familiar with most of these but after a play through (with a lot of them not making the full play!) I can see why they've been chosen... the middle bunch could have been in any order really. Only the bottom 4 felt like songs I would listen to again

25 Little Jimmy Osmond - Long Haired Lover From Liverpool (1972)
24 Ray Stevens - The Streak (1974)
23 Chuck Berry - My Ding-a-ling (1972)
22 Mike Serne & Wendy Richard - Come Outside (1962)
21 Clive Dunn - Grandad (1971)
20 Lena Martel - One Day at a Time (1979)
19 Stargazers - I See the Moon (1954)
18 Rod Stewart - Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? (1978)
17 Billy Connolly - D.I.V.O.R.C.E (1975)
16 JJ Barrie - No Charge (1976)
15 Telly Savalas - If (1975)
14 Windsor Davies & Don Estelle - Whispering Grass (1975)
13 Ken Dodd - Tears (1965)
12 Donny Osmond - Puppy Love (1972)
11 Brian and Michael - Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs (1978)
10 Lonnie Donegan - My Old Man’s a Dustman (1960)
09 Petula Clark - This Is My Song (1967)
08 Pat Boone - I’ll Be Home (1956)
07 Vera Lynn - My Son, My Son (1954)
06 Dana - All Kinds of Everything (1970)
05 Esther and Abi Ofarim - Cinderella Rockefella (1968)
04 Engelbert Humperdinck- The Last Waltz (1967)
03 Lee Marvin - Wand’rin’ Star (1970)
02 Middle of the Road - Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep (1971)
01 Lieutenant Pigeon - Mouldy Old Dough (1972)
- this was actually quite unexpected and interesting!

+1 Rod Stewart - Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? (1978)

Ooh that's a grim list! I must confess I had never heard the Stargazers or Vera Lynn songs before today - it was a much happier time. But yes, dreadful and thoroughly deserve to be here. I've never understood why or how No Charge was a No.1.
I have no problem with any of the bottom six. In fact I actually quite like them but understand why they're here - except for Rod that is. That has no business being here. It's not even his worst No.1 laugh.gif

IIRC it was primarily me lobbying for Rod Stewart's inclusion and I'm disturbed at the level of goodwill towards it, it just gives me the heebie jeebies a bit xx (admittedly that may be because I'm too young to know a time when Rod Stewart wasn't 100 years old)

It’s one of those songs where you can’t help but shout the obvious answer out loud

There's not much I dislike here as all the 70s songs have the childhood nostalgia factor. I'm going to pick the Pat Boone song as the worst as I've just played the playlist and I've already forgotten it again.
