Having been enjoying Antoinette and Doctor Blind's run down through the dance chart number ones of the 1990s, I've decided to run "Indie chart number ones" alongside.

The rules for what determines indie are pretty much what the ITV Chart Show used to use. Therefore, just because the likes of James, The Wonder Stuff or Pop Will Eat Itself were "indie" in sound it does not mean they qualify for the chart. Similarly, even though PWL and XL were or are independent labels, the likes of Kylie, The Prodigy and SL2 were never considered for the Chart Show rundown.

With that in mind, there may be a few surprises as we run through the decade that started with Alan McGee preparing for the release of classics such as Screamadelica, Loveless and Bandwagonesque and ended with Creation going bust and being sold off...all via a trip to Downing Street.

We start with a record released at the end of 1989 which was still top of the indie chart as the nineties began

ELECTRONIC - 'GETTING AWAY WITH IT' (FACTORY)
Number one from 6th January 1990 for 3 weeks

The first single for this 80s supergroup comprising Bernard Sumner (New Order / Joy Division), Johnny Marr (The Smiths) and Neil Tennant (Pet Shop Boys) was released on December 4th 1989 and reached a worthy number 12 during the Christmas market.

The sound is decidedly more influenced by Sumner and Tennant's day job than the jangly guitars usually associated with Marr, but the trio were united in a love of Balaeric / Italo house and this came across very much and even more so on B-side "Lucky Bag". The lyrics, however, were far more in the Smithsian mould - written as a parody of the sort of thing usually concocted by Marr's former partner Morrissey.

Fantastic song. "Disappointed" is just as amazing too.

HAPPY MONDAYS - 'MADCHESTER RAVE ON EP' (FACTORY)
Number one from 27th January 1990 for 1 week

Our second number one of 1990 was also released in 1989. The Madchester Rave On EP featured 'Hallelujah' as lead track and included the storming Club Mix that, over time, broke free from the dancefloor of Manchester's famous Hacienda and into clubs all around the country resulting in sales for a long period beyond it's UK Chart number 19 position the previous November.

Fans were gearing up for the Mondays' next release and awaited their first Paul Oakenfold-produced album with baited breath. They were growing in numbers as the weeks went on and the band's next single was certain to be a massive hit. Watch out for that one later.

I'm quite a fan of Electronic - being a hugh fan of the bands that spawned it. Their debut album is as good as at least 4 of New Order's albums. I listened to it just last week.

Getting Away with It isn't on my copy - but I think it was on some re-release or other. I much prefer it to Get the Message.

Yeah, it was packaged with a later re-issue I think, maybe around the time Electronic reformed for their second LP. Get the Message is actually my favourite single of their's (watch out for it on this thread soon!) I liked Feel Every Beat too.

BIRDLAND - 'SLEEP WITH ME' (LAZY)
Number one from 3rd February 1990 for 1 week

It was a relative rarity for indie bands to hit the top 40 up until this point, but when the NME and Melody Maker got behind certain acts, their singles began to infiltrate the countodown. One band who rode the crest of the hype wave were Birdland - four blokes with matching bleach-blond mops several years before Thom Yorke. 'Sleep With Me' was their only hit, managing to reach no.32 in early 1990 - however, the band are probably better remembered for their debut 'Hollow Heart' and their Patti Smith cover 'Rock n Roll n*****'. As the music weeklies jumped on the baggy bandwagon, Birdland never quite managed to reach the heights they were tipped to and split due to differences before they could record a second LP.

RENEGADE SOUNDWAVE - 'PROBABLY A ROBBERY' (MUTE)
Number one from 10th February for 1 week

By 1990, RSW were stalwarts of the indie scene and 'Probably a Robbery' was their most accessible single to date. It sneaked into #38 in the charts in February giving them their first and only hit. The spoken, wide boy vocals here may have influenced current acts such as Sleaford Mods, while the backing of this track and others like it directly influenced the Chemical Brothers (more on them later).

Enjoy! I've completed the full list now - gets very familiar once we get going into the decade, but there are a few "forgotten" acts at the start.

Great. If I'd done this I'd have done it based on sound rather than label. But that's nothing against your criteria.

Ok, I don't think I've got the time to run fully through this list but I'll post it up in full here and you can comment away.

Note: I've included Junior Boy's Own, Skint and Wall of Sound as indie labels but not certain they actually are. JBO for instance might have been going out through Virgin? I had Network down too but then didn't really want to have to include KWS twice. Either way, enjoy.
