Thermo's hot hits | EOY 2019

Previous EOY threads

Merry Listmas! cheer.gif

it's coming close to EOY season again and it's an extra special year because this is the TENTH edition of the Thermo's hot hits EOY and of course the end of a decade, which means there will also be another countdown to follow of the biggest tracks of the 2010s, but first we'll be focusing on just the year of 2019.

as per the last few years, the chart year is from December-November so that I'm not still here in February counting down tracks. except I probably will be this time, but for the EOD chart - which will be taken from Jan 2010 to Dec 2019 (I'll end the year early but not the decade).

firstly, the tradition of the hate chart being announced first will continue - the 10 worst hit singles of 2019 will be counted down. I will then briefly reflect on the year in albums, TV and film before the main event: counting down the top 250 songs of the year.

but before anything though, let's take a look at last year's top ten singles.

10 Dimension ~ Black Church
09 Elektronomia and JJD ~ Free
08 Weiss ~ Feel My Needs
07 Virtual Self ~ Ghost Voices
06 Nora En Pure ~ Trailblazer
05 MK ~ 17
04 CLiQ ~ Wavey (feat. Alika)
03 Jax Jones ~ Breathe (feat. Ina Wroldsen)
02 Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa ~ One Kiss
01 Avicii ~ Lonely Together (feat. Rita Ora)

it was Avicii who claimed the year's top selling single with 'Lonely Together' - despite its 2017 release date, it continued to sell strongly into the new year eventually spending 13 weeks at #1.

this year Avicii's posthumous album 'Tim' provided three #1 singles including 'SOS', 'Tough Love' and 'Heaven', spending a combined 24 weeks at #1 with the latter which broke the record spending 15 weeks at #1. could any of these could be #1 giving Avicii a fourth EOY chart topper? 'Tim' could also potentially be Avicii's fourth Album Of The Year too.

or could it be Calvin Harris & Rag'n'Bone Man who had a huge hit early in the year with 'Giant', spending 6 weeks at #1? Calvin is still yet to have an EOY chart topper and he nearly had it last year with 'One Kiss'.

other #1 singles from the year include songs from Kygo/Sandro Cavazza, Mark Ronson/Miley Cyrus, Headhunterz/Sound Rush, Two Steps From Hell, TheFatRat/Anjulie, Ben Gold, Richard Durand/Christina Novelli and CloudNone/Laura Brehm.

alternative contenders include Super8 & Tab, who were top of the half-year leaderboard with their 2018 #1 hit and BJSC entry 'Burn' (ft. Hero Baldwin). Gareth Emery also had a huge year and his #2 hit 'Amber Sun' with Ashley Wallbridge could also contend - a #2 peaking single has done it before so it could happen again.

other big singles of the year that didn't hit #1 include those from Armin van Buuren, CamelPhat, Khalid, Jax Jones, Meduza and Sigala.

the hatechart will commence shortly! teresa.gif until it does you can speculate on which single I found the absolute worst this year.

Oh gosh is it that time of year already? Don't think I've even started counting up scores for my contenders yet oops.

I think Avicii is a fairly safe bet for another #1 here though!

Well, here we go again with the Year-End lists. These are the ones that I love reading, yours being one of my favourites!
Can't wait to see your best and even the worst lists.
I wonder if a certain DJ that you like so much will show up, maybe even get to #1.
Still need to count all the songs that I've put on my chart, before I start my Year-End lists and even my End of Decade lists (for the latter list I have to dig up my chart archives to do so!).
So, yeah, I'm hyped for this!

yep! it feels early but I put last years one up on Nov 20. I’ve been doing a fair bit of counting up this weekend too.
Avicii is definitely a contender but could it really be him 2 years in a row? ohmy.gif

well Avicii is definitely showing, if that’s who you mean, and he could even have his entire album in the chart.
looking forward to yours as well.

the top 10 WORST hit singles of the year

before we get to the POSITIVE section of the EOY thread let's take a look back at the worst songs of the past 12 months. Firstly here's the Bottom 10 from last year.

1 Lil Dicky - Freaky Friday (feat. Chris Brown)
2 Anne-Marie - 2002
3 Stefflon Don - Ding-A-Ling (feat. Skepta)
4 Mason Ramsey - Famous
5 6ix9ine - GUMMO
6 HRVY - Personal
7 James Arthur - Naked
8 Maroon 5 - Girls Like You (feat. Cardi B)
9 XXXTENTACION - changes
10 Louis Tomlinson - Miss You

could Lil Dicky possibly get the #1 two years running? he is in contention again with 'Earth' but faces competition from... Anne-Marie again who will appear twice. we will also be "welcoming" back two boybands plus an ex-boyband member. but first here are a few dishonourable mentions

6ix9ine (feat. Tory Lanez) - Kika
Thankfully he seems to be very much done now but he still managed a UK Top 10 at the very tail end of last year with this, plus a reasonably big feature on an ABWDH track (which is otherwise not too bad, and I'm aware a solo version exists but I'm not a fan of that either) so here he is again.

Chris Brown (feat. Justin Bieber & Ink) - Don't Check On Me
Don't think I managed to get through the whole song but it sounded really awful from what I heard of it, we do not need Chris Brown over acoustic guitar. 'No Guidance' is rather dull too, amazed that became such a big hit. 'Undecided' was decent though but if Chris Brown could finally go away in the next decade there'd be no complaints from me.

Harry Styles - Lights Up
At least it's somewhat of an improvement over what I've heard from his first era, I guess, but I still don't like it particularly what they've done to his voice in the chorus. Not heard his new one but I probably wouldn't like that either.

James Arthur - Falling Like The Stars
Boring, next.

Lauv (feat. Anne-Marie) - F**k, I'm Lonely
'I'm So Tired' was meh but this one was irritating. Still yet to actually enjoy anything of his.

Liam Payne (feat. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie) - Stack It Up
No thanks.

Maroon 5 - Memories
Ruining 'Canon In D' should be a specific crime against music. Otherwise, whiny and boring song.

The 1975 - People
Shouty mess of a song, they can do much better.

Tom Walker - Better Half Of Me
Boring, next.

XXXTENTACION - Bad
I think this just missed the cutoff for last year's, but anyway it's a poor half finished song even by his standards.

I like "Lights Up", I tolerate "Stack It Up", "Lonely", "Better Half Of Me" and "Falling Like The Stars" and I consider "Memories" a huge guilty pleasure, but the rest I agree.
Maybe with "People", it's forgettable for me.
I hope Chris Brown goes away, which he should have gone away earlier in my opinion.
XXXTentacion's record label should burn in hell for what they're doing, milking the fans with tracks that shouldn't have been released.
And 6ix9ine, he's horrible, I've ranted on him last year, so still screw this guy.
I'm excited for your top 10, should be a fun one!

Well at least we agree with most of it. Hopefully we agree on the bottom 10 too.
Chris Brown really does not deserve the massively long career he's had, it feels like every time we think he's about to go he makes a comeback anyhow so I'm sure he'll continue to get hits into the new decade.
X's label could at least have waited a bit longer and made the tracks sound more finished, no wonder the posthumous album underperformed.
Hopefully we've seen the last of him although I get the feeling he'll somehow score another hit from jail eventually.

#10. LadBaby - We Built This City

Just what we needed for Christmas was an awful rewritten 'We Built This City' rendition about sausage rolls by someone who can barely sing, and surprisingly enough people actually bought it to #1. At least it was for charity but that doesn't excuse it being bad.

#09. Westlife - Better Man

I wasn't at all a fan of their comeback Hello My Love but at least it was an attempt to sound modern and it wasn't completely bad. Then this was released as the followup which reminded me of why I really don't like this band, it's another boring dated ballad of theirs. Dynamite wasn't a whole lot better either but that didn't make the top 100.

#08. Anne-Marie - Perfect To Me

Another bad Anne-Marie song although thankfully not as insufferable as '2002' partly thanks to the UK public seemingly having some taste and not letting this be a proper hit. There's some real choice lyrics here and it's simultaneously boring and annoying.

#07. Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello - Señorita

Well, at least it's not quite as bad as the two songs of his that topped my hate chart before (and in the same year, it was a tie) and it's not even as bad as their other duet, but did the public really have to let the most annoying Shawn song of this era become his biggest hit yet? Too many ooh la las for my liking. Camila can't save it either.

We Built This City is okay, there is a bit of enjoyment in there.
I remember Better Man being solid when I covered it on DT32RTUKD back when I first started it in March. Not as good as My Blood, which is my fave of the songs I've heard from the Spectrum era.
I give credit to Perfect To Me for its self-empowerment message. I liked it at first, but it started to shrink on me; it's alright though. There is that one line where she talks about not brushing her teeth, and thank you for sharing that information.
Senorita is decent, but getting a bit overplayed. I prefer If I Can't Have You of the 2019 Shawn songs for having a nice, upbeat vibe to it that reminds me of The Sound by The 1975.

I just didn’t find it amusing really which was meant to be its main selling point.
Westlife just ain’t for me really, never been fond of them.
IICHY was decent for his standards, which is why I haven’t given it a dishonourable mention. Gryffin did a nice remix too but I’d probably enjoy it more if it were a different vocalist.

I thought this right from the first time I heard it, and it just got more and more annoying with every listen afterwards (and there were far too many!). I'm glad someone else thinks that too, as I thought I was the only one here who didn't like it at first!

Perfect To Me is also fully deserving of its place on here, what a miracle it was for it to miss the top 40.

Alright, "Senorita" is amazing in my opinion, but I would rather to it on my free time, not every single day, it still in many charts worldwide, even though I've dropped the song after the 20 week run (Billboard Hot 100 style).
But for the rest, yeah, agreed.
I've heard "We Built This City" by Ladbaby on the Christmas Chart show, I get it's for charity, but it's bad, really bad. Also, this song can go and die in a fire, because this song prevented "Sweet But Psycho" as the Christmas #1. I've much rather have Ava Max at the top than someone singing about goddamn sausage rolls!
Alright, now that I've the rant over with, onto "Better Man", heard this when I've first heard Westlife's new album and it's one of the weaker songs on there, pretty forgettable.
"Perfect To Me" one of Anne-Marie's least favourite songs, forgettable, bland and not interesting. Now I can see why you hate her so much.

There seems to be a few high votes for it in the Hatechart already too so it's not a total love fest for the song on Buzzjack.
I seem to remember it was kicked out by a re-entering Ed Sheeran - Perfect too. laugh.gif Which actually is the better Perfect though I don't like either.

Well at least we agree with most of it. tongue.gif
Charity singles tend to be bad so I'm glad they're for the most part a thing of the past anyhow. Mariah should have been Xmas #1 really too, she deserves the song to finally get to #1 this year anyhow as it's her best chance of making it.
I won't be listening to Westlife's album, can't stand them for the most part.
I used to quite like her too, "Rockabye" was a huge hit for me and I enjoyed "Ciao Adios" and "Alarm", she's done one of the biggest u-turns on me ever since.

#06. Ed Sheeran & Justin Bieber - I Don't Care

Another year means another overexposed Ed Sheeran track, and this song is not good at all. The production is very thin which doesn't help but it mostly comes down to the tacky basic hook. More could have been done with the premise of feeling anxious at a large social gathering (#relatable) but then it ends up being just another cheesy love song.

#05. Jonas Brothers - Cool

Supposedly about how 'cool' they are, but for me it had the opposite effect and reminded me again why I don't like this boyband after 'Sucker' was in the category of 'not bad, but not playlist material'. Just an annoying song which thankfully wasn't all that big.

I think your honourable mentions are worse than most of your Top 10 for me! I Don't Care is probably the worst but they're all songs which I don't really have an opinion on to be honest.

I can't stand "Cool", at least "Sucker" and "Only Human" were decent in my opinion, as for "I Don't Care" I liked it at first, but overplay killed it eventually
