British Muslims have started the process of leaving the UK over fears for their ‘personal safety’ now Boris Johnson is Prime Minister for five years, Metro.co.uk can reveal. Among them is the head of a Muslim charity, which provides food parcels for poor people in Manchester, after saying he was scared for the ‘future of his children’. Manzoor Ali said: ‘I’m scared for my personal safety, I worry about my children’s future.’ It comes after the prime minister was accused of ‘Islamophobia and racism’ following a number of controversial comments he made in the past, including his remarks in a 2005 Spectator article in which he claimed it was only ‘natural’ for the public to be scared of Islam. Mr Johnson also received a considerable degree of criticism for comparing Muslim women to ‘letterboxes and bank robbers’ in a column for the Telegraph last year. The prime minister has insisted his comments were taken out of context and he was defending the right of Muslim women to wear what they like. During the election campaign he also apologised for Islamophobia in the Conservative party, after a number of candidates shared posts by Tommy Robinson, referring to Muslims as scum.

Sad if this is true. sad.gif Especially a Muslim man who's helping poor families in Manchester. I thought we were a tolerant country. What's happened? He shouldn't leave. He'll be fine here. I think him and others are over-reacting if I'm honest.

I don't think Muslims or any other religion have anything to fear with Boris in charge. He's not racist in the slightest and am sure he embraces all religions just like most of the general public just so so long as they live here peacefully.

The PM calling Muslim women letterboxes and bank robbers and allowing Trump to disinvite the only Muslim member of the cabinet to dinner might have just a wee thing to do with it...

Or the Tories burying Islamophobia accusations & no-one bringing them up through the entire campaign.

Or people online all over equating certain Muslim extremists with all Muslims.

Or the country deciding to make a wee girl who was abused stateless just on the testimony of one known-to-be-biased newspaper's interview with her.

etc. etc.

Why is anyone surprised he actually said these things and words have consequences. Whereas JC has to take the blame for a minority of idiots who write idiotic things on social media.

[horrible tweets incoming]

I mean, just look at who is celebrating their victory - and the number of likes those tweets have got - and it should make sense to you.

You don't need to guess what 'our own' and 'British people' means - she certainly isn't including British Muslims.

I'm not saying that there are fascists in the Tory government yet, but we already know that the fascists are on their side and are happy to appease them as they're part of their voter coalition.

With the left and centre out of the picture for five years at the very least, we'll see how they react to the presence of a handful of ethnic minority Tory MPs and whether they start turning on each other.

Yes he did say those things and neither he, I, nor anyone else is trying to say he didn't but according to Boris they were "lighthearted jokes, bit of fun and banter and taken out of context" and he didn't mean anything wrong with them. Okay not a good choice for jokes but are these indiscretions going to dog him for his entire 5 years (or longer) premiership.? Can he never be forgiven?

Nobody should I agree but he says he did. Apparently he thought the "letterboxes" thing was very funny and hence he said it and have seen many comments online which say it's hilarious and they agree with him.

You can't see how Muslims could feel threatened by people saying the clothes they wear are hilarious?

Is Hopkins looking more attention??

She should be arrested for those comments imo.

Indiscretions? They were in published articles, not off-the-cuff remarks. How can you say that someone who uses phrases (again in a published article) such as “picaninnies with water melon smiles” is not at all racist?

The sad thing is, it will not be the dangerous radical Muslims who will leave, but the ordinary law-abiding ones who will be convinced by what they'd heard, rightly or wrongly, about Boris.

Why do you treat dangerous Muslims and non-dangerous Muslims as if they are groups of equal size and weighting? Those statements are very loaded to appear as if that is the case, as opposed to the former being a very small minority. That's how Islamophbia is spread 101.

Johnson's excuses for those comments are no more than self-deflecting 'it's just a joke' which nobody surely can be believing. Same energy as 'it's all locker room talk' and 'he never meant it seriously', but when those words come out of your mouth are put down on paper, they give some insight into your true thoughts.

As Harve said, not all Conservatives are racists and fascists, but racists and fascists now have a home in the Conservative party and they're hella emboldened, Johnson's comments are a part of that, they'll see it as dogwhistling to prove that 'he's one of us'. He needs to be shaking off that association by apologising and wholeheartedly rejecting the comments and the media should be hounding him on Islamophobia. As yet, that is not forthcoming and anti-Muslim feeling will sadly grow every day that remains so.
