672. “Sweet Disposition” by The Temper Trap — 299.434 points

  • Release Date: 15. August, 2009
  • Chart Peak: #6 (in 2009)
  • Weeks on Chart: 60 weeks
  • Year-End 2010-2017: 139-413-300-x-x-x-x-x
One of my favorite songs of 2009 is this indie rock masterpiece (that was made even more brilliant as a club anthem by Axwell). While the song failed to crack the top 5 during its' run it still managed to rack up a huge 60 weeks on the chart from 2009 to 2012. The Temper Trap have failed to recreate the success of "Sweet Disposition" since and have really only made one other appearance in the Top 100 ("Fader" which made #76 in 2010), but at least they can be happy to hear that this song has accumulated a total of 898k sales to date.

Top 40 Chart Run (19/05/2012): 26

671. “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol — 299.509 points

  • Release Date: 29. July, 2006
  • Chart Peak: #6 (in 2006)
  • Weeks on Chart: 176 weeks
  • Year-End 2010-2017: 314-235-329-370-x-386-365-x
Arguably one of the biggest hits of all time is another song that actually failed to make the Top 5. Snow Patrol released this 2000s classic in late July 2006 and I think nobody expected it to become the recurring smash that it ended up being. The song has accumulated a gargantuan total of 176 weeks in the Top 100 since its debut which is most definitely among the highest total ever, but what's even more mind-boggling is its' sales total: 4.78m copies from 2006 to 2017 - which makes sense given that it's spent more than three years in the Top 100.

Top 40 Chart Run (09/01/2010): 39

Snow Patrol Top 2000 entries:
1314. “Called Out In The Dark" (#11, 2011) [116k]
1874. "Don't Give In" (#48, 2018) [56k]

670. “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon — 300.255 points

  • Release Date: 4. October, 2008
  • Chart Peak: #2 (in 2008)
  • Weeks on Chart: 106 weeks
  • Year-End 2010-2017: 233-342-330-259-x-x-x-465
The bigger one of Kings of Leon's two absolute monster smashes of 2008 places 20th overall in the recurrent category ("Sex On Fire" would be at 1725th place with 60.780 points) is this emotional rock song that surprisingly failed to place at number one despite two very close calls. Kings of Leon have never managed to quite recreate the success of these two hits but given its chart run I think it's safe to say this will always be a 2000s classic. Use Somebody has managed to nab a huge 2.65m sales to date in its pocket.

Top 40 Chart Run (05/05/2012): 35

Kings of Leon Top 2000 entries:

1088. "Radioactive" (#07, 2010) [171k]

1628. “Waste A Moment“ (#22, 2016) [74k]

665. “Driving Home For Christmas” by Chris Rea — 302.246 points

  • Release Date: 10. December, 1988
  • Chart Peak: #33 (in 2007)
  • Weeks on Chart: 51 weeks
  • Year-End 2010-2017: 439-314-368-386-341-307-302-248
Yet another Christmas song, leaving just five to battle it out for the biggest one of the 2010s. Interestingly enough Chris Rea originally only had a peak of #53 but has since managed to enter the Top 40 a few times and even outpeaking itself on every Year-End chart for the past three years. Chris Rea's total for "Driving Home For Christmas" has exceeded 500k to date.

647. “Fight For This Love” by Cheryl Cole — 311.181 points

  • Release Date: 31. October, 2009
  • Chart Peak: #1 (in 2009)
  • Weeks on Chart: 39 weeks
  • Year-End 2010-2017: 86-x-x-x-x-x-x-x
Still Cheryl's biggest hit to date (by quite a marigin) is also her debut single as a solo artist. This song was released shortly after Girls Aloud disbanded so the momentum was definitely there to propel it into the massive smash it became. For me this is one of her weakest efforts but I can still understand the hype. "Fight For This Love" has sold upwards of 1.06m to date.

638. “Merry Christmas Everyone” by Shakin' Stevens — 317.083 points

  • Release Date: 7. December, 1985
  • Chart Peak: #1 (in 1985)
  • Weeks on Chart: 62 weeks
  • Year-End 2010-2017: 396-326-357-426-332-290-289-237
Another Christmas song that seems to be getting more popular each year (having climbed on the Year-End list every year since 2013) is the fifth highest placing Christmas song of the 2010s. Just like with most of these Christmas song artists this is the only song by Shakin' Stevens to enter the Top 2000 in this decade but surprisingly enough they had one other song pop up in 2015: "Echoes of Merry Christmas Everyone" which honestly just sounds like a slightly altered version of the song in question here. This song sold around 11k copies in the past 8 years, while the original is closing in on 1.2m copies to date.

631. “I'm Yours” by Jason Mraz — 320.118 points

  • Release Date: 6. December, 2008
  • Chart Peak: #11 (in 2009)
  • Weeks on Chart: 96 weeks
  • Year-End 2010-2017: 158-x-296-276-x-x-x-x
Everyone's (least) favorite ukulele song did indeed manage to sell this many copies in this decade, having resurfaced around 7 or 8 times since its initial run. What maybe surprised me the most about this song's performance is the fact that it was released so late in the UK, but I guess the late debut date may have influenced how long the song dragged over into 2010. Despite the song having never entered the Top 10, "I'm Yours" has sold over 1.6m copies to date.

  • Chart Peak: #1 (in 2009)
  • Weeks on Chart: 34 weeks
  • Year-End 2010-2017: 66-x-x-x-x-x-x-x
Despite easily being my favorite single from BEP's "The END" album, I still feel like it was never really as big as the numbers behind it suggest. The song managed to luck into the number one spot for a week in 2009 which was surprising but possibly the most surprising feat it's managed is being a million seller with 1.1 sales to its name, but that's still nothing compared to the other song this group has left on here.

I loved Chipmunk's first album. He played my student's union a lot in my first couple of years of uni, certainly around the time he was getting the number ones and duetting with Emeli Sande/Esmee Denters (who I loved. Shame she didn't have a longer career!)

443. “Empire State Of Mind” by Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys — 437.028 points (#14 Recurrents)

  • Release Date: 26. September, 2009
  • Chart Peak: #2 (in 2009)
  • Weeks on Chart: 49 weeks
  • Year-End 2010-2017: 46-x-x-x-x-x-x-x
This is a song that I'm honestly surprised has only resurfaced once after its initial run (and that was in 2010), but instead it was Alicia Keys' solo version that has appeared more frequently. Arguably one of Jay-Z's most defining hits to date it was quite a surprise that this failed to nab the top spot (and even more surprising that the song that kept it from doing so was quite a forgotten number one "Break Your Heart" spending a third week on the top). This song has sold 1.19m to date.

Top 40 Chart Run (02/01/2010): ..-21-20-18-20-21-18-22-25-16-17-28-36-31-30-35-38

580. “Three Lions” by Baddiel, Skinner and The Lightning Seed — 393.261 points (#15 Recurrents)

  • Release Date: 1. June, 1996
  • Chart Peak: #1 (in 1996 & 2018)
  • Weeks on Chart: 47 weeks
  • Year-End 2010-2018: 214-x-x-x-376-x-430-x-88
"Three Lions" (alternatively titled "Three Lions (Football's Coming Home)") is a song released in 1996 as a single by English band The Lightning Seeds to mark the England football team's hosting of that year's European Championships. The music was written by the Lightning Seeds' Ian Broudie, with comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner—presenters of football-themed comedy show Fantasy Football League—providing the lyrics.

The title comes from the emblem of the England football team, which is in turn derived from the Royal Arms of England. This song is one of only three songs to top the British charts more than once with lyric variants, the others being "Mambo No. 5" (in versions by Lou Bega and Bob the Builder) and "Do They Know It's Christmas?" (by Band Aid, Band Aid 20 and Band Aid 30). It also regularly reappears in the UK singles chart around major football tournaments involving the England team.

The song has been described as the de facto "anthem" of English football since 1996. Its chorus, with the refrain "It's coming home", has become a popular chant for fans at England games in subsequent years.

431. “Tik Tok” by Kesha — 510.791 points (#13 Recurrents)

  • Release Date: 14. November, 2009
  • Chart Peak: #4 (in 2010)
  • Weeks on Chart: 42 weeks
  • Year-End 2010-2018: 35-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x
"Tik Tok" (stylized as "TiK ToK") is the debut single by American singer Kesha. She co-wrote the song with its producers Dr. Luke and Benny Blanco. It was released on August 7, 2009, as the lead single from Kesha's debut studio album, Animal. The opening line of the song came from an experience where Kesha woke up surrounded by beautiful women, to which she imagined Diddy being in a similar scenario. The experience triggered the writing of the song which she later brought to her producer, Dr. Luke, who was then contacted by Diddy in hopes of a collaboration; he came to the studio the same day and recorded his lines and the song was completed. According to Kesha, the song's lyrics are representative of her and based on her life; the song has a carefree message and talks about not letting anything bring you down.

The song is an electropop/dance-pop song incorporating a minimalist bitpop beat interspersed with handclaps and synths. The song's verses use a rap/sing vocal style while the chorus is sung; throughout the song the use of Auto-Tune is prominent. Musically, the song has been compared to the works of Lady Gaga, Uffie, and Fergie.

The song achieved commercial success by topping the charts in eleven countries. In the United States, the song broke the record for the biggest single-week sum of all time for a female artist selling 610,000 digital downloads in one week. "Tik Tok" was certified 8× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and has sold 6.8 million copies in the United States, topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 9 consecutive weeks. The song was the best-selling single worldwide in 2010, selling 12.8 million copies in that year alone, by now the song has sold over 18 million copies, making it the fifth best-selling single in the digital history. The song was listed 56th on the Billboard Hot 100 Songs of All-time.

415. “I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday” by Wizzard — 519.586 points (#12 Recurrents)

  • Release Date: 14. November, 2009
  • Chart Peak: #4 (in 1973)
  • Weeks on Chart: 75 weeks
  • Year-End 2010-2018: 323-259-279-318-288-265-249-229-248
"I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" is a Christmas song recorded by British glam rock band Wizzard. It was first released in December 1973 and, as with most Wizzard songs, was written and produced by the band's frontman Roy Wood — formerly of The Move and a founding member of ELO. Despite the song's strong, long-lasting popularity, it has reached no higher than number four on the UK Singles Chart, a position it occupied for four consecutive weeks from December 1973 to January 1974. The song was beaten to the 1973 Christmas Number 1 spot by Slade's "Merry Xmas Everybody" which remained at the top of the charts for five weeks, from December 1973 to January 1974.

Roy Wood sings lead vocals. The backing vocals for the single are by "The Suedettes", augmented by the choir of Stockland Green School First Year. The original sleeve of the single credits "Miss Snob and Class 3C" with "Additional noises". The basic track for the single was recorded in August 1973, so to create a wintry feeling engineer Steve Brown decorated the studio with Christmas decorations and turned the air conditioning down to its coldest setting. Wood wore a woollen hat found in lost property. The schoolchildren were brought down from the Midlands to London by bus during the autumn half-term to add their contributions.

At the time of the single's release, Wizzard's contract with EMI was close to expiration. Promotional copies were pressed by Warner Brothers, with whom the band had just signed for future releases. Only then was it discovered that EMI were legally entitled to the track after all, so the Warner Bros. Records pressings were halted and the record appeared on the Harvest label, but with the same picture sleeve. This song is virtually never played in the United States, as can be seen in the Internet article titled 7 British Christmas Songs that Somehow Never Made it Big in the U.S.

Although Wood had arranged for the members of the Stockland Green School choir to sing at the Top of the Pops television recording, their place was taken by children provided by a local London stage school.

400. “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman — 533.809 points (#11 Recurrents)

  • Release Date: 4. June, 1988
  • Chart Peak: #4 (in 2011)
  • Weeks on Chart: 58 weeks
  • Year-End 2010-2018: x-92-427-383-373-399-231-x-x
"Fast Car" is a song by American singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman. It was released in April 1988 as the lead single from her self-titled debut album. Her appearance on the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute was the catalyst for the song's becoming a top 10 hit in the United States, peaking at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, and a top 10 hit in the United Kingdom, peaking at number 4 on the UK Singles Chart. "Fast Car" received two Grammy nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, as well as a Video Music Award nomination for Best Female Video in 1989.

According to Metro Weekly critic Chris Gerard, "Fast Car" tells a grittily realistic story of a working poor woman trying to escape the cycle of poverty, set to folk rock music. The song's arrangement was described by Orlando Sentinel writer Thom Duffy as "subtle folk-rock", while Billboard magazine's Gary Trust deemed the record a "folk/pop" song. Dave Marsh said it was perhaps an "optimistic folk-rock narrative", whose characters are in a homeless shelter.

Rolling Stone ranked the song number 167 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. It is Chapman's only song on the list (and the highest ranking song both written and performed by a female artist). Pitchfork placed the song at number 86 on their list of the 200 Best Songs of the 1980s.

In April 2011 the track also hit the UK top ten at number 4 after Michael Collings performed it on Britain's Got Talent. The single was certified Platinum in the United Kingdom by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in 2014, based on digital downloads and streaming.

323. “You've Got The Love” by Florence + The Machine — 600.248 points (#10 Recurrents)

  • Release Date: 1. August, 2009
  • Chart Peak: #5 (in 2010)
  • Weeks on Chart: 67 weeks
  • Year-End 2010-2018: 34-438-x-x-x-x-x-x-x
"You Got the Love" is a 1986 single by Candi Staton. It was then remixed by The Source and re-released in 1991 as 'The Source and Candi Staton'. The song was covered by English indie rock band Florence and the Machine as "You've Got the Love" and released as the fifth single from their debut album, Lungs (2009). It was first released on 1 December 2008 as the B-side to their second single "Dog Days Are Over". It was then later released as a digital download only single on 5 January 2009 in the United Kingdom only, after the mass praise it received during the release of "Dog Days Are Over". After being released well before Lungs was finally recorded and released, it was later featured on the album as its bonus track.

The single was given a re-release on physical format on 16 November 2009 in the United Kingdom. For the reissue a music video was shot. Despite originally being released as a single almost nine months earlier, the band announced on 18 September 2009 that a music video would be made for the song and would be shot on 21 September 2009 in London. It features Welch in a white, sparkly leotard dancing on a large moon-shaped platform suspended over a nightclub, an homage to Studio 54. The video later shows many people beneath her dancing to the song. The video that will air on United Kingdom television has a different version of the song to the one on the album.

313. “Iris” by The Goo Goo Dolls — 609.436 points (#9 Recurrents)

  • Release Date: 1. August, 1998
  • Chart Peak: #3 (in 2011)
  • Weeks on Chart: 101 weeks
  • Year-End 2010-2018: x-106-255-191-445-340-332-x-x
"Iris" is a song by American alternative rock band Goo Goo Dolls. Originally written for the soundtrack of the 1998 film City of Angels, the song was later included on the band's sixth album Dizzy Up the Girl. The song's time signature alternates between 4/4 and 6/8, and features an unusual guitar tuning in which most of the strings are tuned to D, lending the guitar a chorus-like effect.

"Iris" has contributed greatly to the band's success. Besides becoming one of the biggest alternative rock staples of the 1990s, "Iris" also remains one of the biggest crossover hits in the history of popular music, crossing over from modern rock radio to pop and adult contemporary radio, reaching number one on all of these formats and becoming the most played song of 1998 for all formats. The song reached number one in Australia, Canada, and Italy, number three in the United Kingdom, number eight on the US Billboard Hot 100, and has become one of Ireland's best-selling singles of all time. "Iris" is the Goo Goo Dolls' signature song, with critics describing it as an "ubiquitous" staple for the band's live sets.

"Mr. Brightside" is the first single released by American rock band The Killers. It was released as the band's debut single and is featured on their debut studio album Hot Fuss (2004). Written by band members Brandon Flowers and Dave Keuning, this was one of the first songs the Killers ever wrote. It is written in the key of D-flat major. Two music videos were made for the song: the first, which is in black-and-white, features the band performing in an empty room. The second, filmed for the re-release, is based on the 2001 film Moulin Rouge!.

The song was originally released on September 29, 2003 and achieved minor success. It became more popular upon its re-release in 2004, peaking at number 10 in both the United States and the United Kingdom. It is The Killers' second best-selling song in the US, where it has sold over 3.5 million copies. In the United Kingdom it is one of the top fifteen most downloaded rock tracks ever.

"Mr. Brightside" was named "Song of the Decade" by UK radio stations Absolute Radio and XFM, and in April 2010 Last.fm revealed that it was the most listened to track since the launch of the online music service, with over 12.2 million plays. In October 2010, it was voted ninth in the Greatest Guitar Riffs of the 21st Century so far by Total Guitar magazine. Additionally, in 2010 Rolling Stone listed "Mr. Brightside" as the forty-eighth best song of the twenty-first century.
