The Futureheads

Points: 1235
Date first charted: 26/07/2004
Number of entries: 18
Total weeks on chart: 194
Most Successful Year: 2008, 1st

Despite pre-dating most of their contemporaries of the mid 00s indie scene, first hitting the UK chart in 2003, The Futureheads never quite managed to 'make it' in the same way as many others did. It did take their cover of Kate Bush for me to properly get into them, but from there there was no turning back. Their style made them really stick out as they explored harmonies and different vocalists in ways that was rarely heard, and Hounds of Love provided them the perfect song to display that. Their cover of it remains my favourite of theirs, my favourite cover of all time, and would be a cert in my top 5 of noughties indie tunes. It entered at #1 ahead of fellow North East boys Maximo Park, and started a run of 9 consecutive top 5 singles, ending the year with Area entering there too, a superb and punchy standalone single.

Albums came thick and fast, and whilst the quality wasn't always running through them, they continued a knack of making killer singles with 9 with the likes of Skip To The End and Beginning of The Twist, which should have really been that era's #1 over Walking Backwards. Their fourth album in barely 5 years in 2010 probably completed the law of diminishing returns but it still had its worthy standouts and was better than most of their type were making by album 4. They then bowed out for a while with an entire a capella album, comprising of new versions of some of their songs, some old folk and sea shanty songs (if only that trend had kicked off a decade earlier) and covers of well known mainstream hits from the likes of Black Eyed Peas, Sparks and Kelis. It might have been an album I only listened to a few times but it was a great effort to do something new, which most bands wouldn't dream of doing.

After a few years away where the band all went and got real jobs, they reformed to make another album and tour in 2019, and came back with Jekyll, something so in their classic and signature sound. The album was good, but I probably rated it higher at the time just because it was great to have them back. Overall, a fully deserving place well inside the top 10.

The Chemical Brothers

Points: 1284
Date first charted: 15/09/2003
Number of entries: 19
Total weeks on chart: 210
Most Successful Year: 2015, 10th

There are four acts who've hit the top spot at least 5 times, and The Chemical Brothers are the first of those to appear at #6. Four of those five were in their first 5 entries, including a number one debut for The Golden Path in 2003, perhaps an odd choice for being the song with the second longest chart run ever! The lead single for their first singles collection, it made me buy the album and it was something I listened to huge amounts, being a bit young to know a lot of their older stuff, it was only really Hey Boy Hey Girl that I was properly familiar with, so they were a band I begun to get really into and as a song it stuck with me for ages - it's still a delightful song, Wayne Coyne's vocal really adding to it.

They broke the run of indie number ones in 2005 with Galvanize spending three weeks at the top, Q-Tip's vocals on it making it a great anthem, before Believe went close and the very underrated Boxer made it a third. A fourth song hitting their top soon followed with their next release Do It Again making it in 2007, and I enjoyed their We Are The Night album much more than I did Push The Button, The Salmon Dance is absolutely iconic and Saturate is up there with their finest instrumental work, and deservedly still makes their live sets. After six consecutive top 3 singles they then missed the top 10 a few times but still releasing decent stuff with their Oasis remix, lead from GH and the 12 minute single from their next album Escape Velocity.

Swoon has gone on to become such a favourite of mine, a shame it's not one of their 5 to hit the top, and their 2015 return was with a bang as they teamed up with Q-Tip again after 10 years for Go! to return them to the top 3 again, before that 5th number one came later that year as Beck provided vocals on Wide Open, a brilliant understated track that builds to great effect with a vocal that compliments the music so well. The singles from their 9th album gave them three more decent hits, Got To Keep On felt about as big as a Chemical Brothers song is likely to get these days and feels like its peak is way too low. The Darkness That You Fear a couple of years later eclipsed them all though and got them into the top 5 for a 9th time.

They're comfortably a top 5 act of all time for me, so much of their pre-2003 work is great, Exit Planet Dust and Dig Your Own Hole both exceptional albums, and their live set at Glastonbury one of the greatest experiences of live music I've ever had. The crediting of guests is all over the place depending on where you look - I'd add Q-Tip, Fatlip etc. but the ones I've missed off are all ones who've not really had any other chart success.

Elbow

Points: 1318
Date first charted: 04/08/2003
Number of entries: 19
Total weeks on chart: 207
Most Successful Year: 2014, 1st

Another act who'd definitely rank in my top 5 of all time are Elbow. They reign comfortably at #1 on the artists and song charts on my last.fm account, started at the beginning of 2008, well ahead of The National and Bon Iver's Holocene. Deciding which songs are in my top 5 and their ranking (well, apart from the #1) is certainly the most difficult I've done of all 100. Guy Garvey is probably the ultimate frontman, a great songwriter, lyricist and vocalist, he holds a crowd incredibly well when playing live, and their knack of producing great harmonies, choruses and use of a range of instrumentation means they have a set of songs suitable for all scenarios, moods and seasons.

In the early days of their career I largely just heard their songs on the chart show and they were decent enough, but Forget Myself was the only song on their first three albums that made any real impact on me, hitting the top 10 in 2005. I enjoyed the first single from their fourth album, Grounds For Divorce, but it was the next release that really catapulted them into my attentions. One Day Like This is the most glorious, uplifting, pop song it's possible to write. A big chorus, beautifully written accompanied by the most gorgeous string section, its eventual success in taking them to new levels of success so richly deserved. It spent six weeks at the top of my chart and remains the only song to have spent more than 30 weeks on the chart. Quite fitting that the most successful song of the last 20 years is almost certainly the one I'd rank as my favourite.

The Seldom Seen Kid era is undoubtedly their peak. Each of their first six albums could be argued are great, but that one is quite frankly in a different league. The Bones of You soon gave them a second #1, Mirrorball a stunning love song, and despite One Day Like This being the perfect closer to an album, it's followed by the perfect Friend of Ours, a tribute to Guy's best friend who passed away following a sudden illness. Those two #1s were the beginnings of a run of 10 top 5 singles, and 12 top 10 singles, with each of the three from their next album reaching the top 2, the highlight of which being the piano-led ballad Lippy Kids.

First Steps was part of the BBC's Olympics coverage in 2012 which I enjoyed but was very much part of Olympic fever contributing to a short chart run, before four singles being released off album #6 meant that 2014 ended up being their most successful year, New York Morning getting them a fourth number one and My Sad Captains being the typical singalong anthem of theirs I love. Their next lead single Magnificent (She Says) is probably their last great song. I haven't disliked anything I've heard of them in the last few years, but when they have so much *perfection* in their discography I just find it quite difficult to get into.

A chronological list of songs that I haven't put in my top 5 that would comfortably make a hell of a lot of top 5s here: Any Day Now, Newborn, Scattered Black and Whites, Ribcage, Grace Under Pressure, Forget Myself, Station Approach, Starlings, Weather To Fly, The Bones of You, The Birds, New York Morning, Magnificent (She Says)

Arcade Fire

Points: 1352
Date first charted: 28/03/2005
Number of entries: 21
Total weeks on chart: 211
Most Successful Year: 2013, 4th

For a long while, Arcade Fire were one of the best and most consistent bands around, until releasing a duff album in 2017, before what felt like a return to form, but the listens to these 21 songs (plus a few select others) accounts for about 75% of my listening to them in the last 6 months, and it's difficult to think I'm ever going to want to play an Arcade Fire album again now.

Rebellion (Lies) was the first song of theirs that I properly got into, the most brilliant feel good indie hit, my three longest running singles of all time appearing consecutively for the acts in positions 6-4. Funeral was an album I loved so much, up there amongst my favourites of the time, so varied and clever throughout. Their second and third albums didn't produce a number one but Sprawl (Mountains Beyond Mountains) is up there with their best, songs just sung by Regine often were (In The Backseat too). They had three more number ones with the two main singles from Reflektor and then the disco-esque Everything Now, rarely has a single set an album up for such disappointment. Last year they got a 13th top 10 entry and 10th top 5, tallies they will almost certainly not be adding to.

Kanye West

Points: 1499
Date first charted: 22/03/2004
Number of entries: 26
Total weeks on chart: 232
Most Successful Year: 2005, 2nd

With three more chart entries than anyone else, there is an element of Kanye being so high because of the quantity of work he's put out over the last two decade, particularly so many collaborations and features on other artists work. But he has had three number ones and a further nine top 10 hits too. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Runaway remain my favourite rap album and song of all time. I've never been that fussed with any of his other full albums, although did buy some of them.

In this all-time chart he took the lead in 2009 for five years, and then again in 2019 with his work with Francis & The Lights, but Jail wasn't quite successful enough as a final entry to continue ahead of the two above, finishing 49 points off the lead. The quality of his music has certainly dipped in the last decade, and he's become that much of a hideous personality it's hard to have much time for him these days, Jail itself was a huge surprise. I'll post the top 2 over the weekend, will be nice to actually write about someone I can abide to listen to again!

When Arctic Monkeys songs first demoed on Myspace, I was a sixteen year old indie fan and soon became obsessed with them. The hype around them was fully deserved, as a band who were only a bit older than I was made punchy songs which were great lyrically, the likes of Fake Tales of San Francisco, From The Ritz To The Rubble and Cigarette Smoke all had a certain charm but Scummy was the one that I really loved. They were all updated for their album release a year later, but it was Scummy - now When The Sun Goes Down - which is the one which has remained my all time favourite of theirs. Despite having heard it loads by the time it was a single, the new version still entered at the top spot. There have been many songs since which have been sensational, but seventeen years later nothing has quite managed to top it.

It's hard to imagine anything they released as a debut single not entering straight at the top, but I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor is fully deserving of it, the perfect stomper to introduce themselves to the world - I was in Asda on its release day buying a CD copy and delighted it defied the odds to be the UK's number one too. Its B-Side, Bigger Boys And Stolen Sweethearts, is probably their most underrated track, and sneaks into my top 5 overall - it still sounds incredible and as it's not something you hear out of your own listening, it's hard to get bored of it. The album was brilliant - I wasn't a fan of some of their reworkings (Riot Van especially) but it gave us enough new songs and was more than good enough to deserve all of its success and accolades, predictable but A Certain Romance and Mardy Bum the highlights.

Teddy Picker is perhaps the surprising choice of their second album's singles to hit the top, but all three are fantastic and remain so, showing the huge variation in their style. Humbug is my second favourite album of theirs, I find it hugely underrated and undercharted the latter two singles from it somewhat. Cornerstone is up there with my favourite tracks of theirs, easily my favourite ballad and showed the type of thing they'd go on to produce later. I think Suck It And See is largely unappreciated too, and the title track is magnificent; "you're rarer than a can of Dandelion & Burdock, while those other girls are just post-mix lemonade" is a marvellous lyric, though I stopped pretending I liked Don't Sit Down Cos I Moved You're Chair after a while, pre-2017 it was comfortably the worst song in their discography.

Their 2012 return of Do I Wanna Know? was superb, deservedly getting them back to previous heights. It's gone on to become second to WTSGD for me, and whilst I'm not as big a fan of AM as most others, I absolutely get why it's so highly rated so well listened to a decade on. Of the two recent albums, although they're in a similar style I think they've built on that so well and developed it to make The Car., There'd Better Be a Mirrorball was better on first listen and such a grower. Tranquillity Base... was probably the most I've ever been disappointed by an album, but the songs on The Car take that sound and do so much more with it. I thought I'd give it another listen recently, but I still couldn't get through it all - even on their own, the songs are just so dull, but I can easily allow one flaw in an otherwise superb discography.

Robyn

Points: 1548
Date first charted: 25/06/2007
Number of entries: 20
Total weeks on chart: 259
Most Successful Year: 2010, 2nd

And coming in at all time number one, is the delightful Robyn. With three fewer entries than Arctics and six fewer than Kanye, she's way ahead of all acts with 12+ entries on points gained per entry, such has been her consistency over the years. 20 entries, 5 #1s, 4 #2s, and 5 more top 5s. Just six of her 20 entries have missed the top 5, and that includes songs which peaked at 7, 8 & 9.

I had no memory of her earlier hit Show Me Love, and have never really got into it, so her career here started with the delightful With Every Heartbeat, simply the most perfect pop song. Its parent album Robyn was one I enjoyed but was a bit inconsistent, but she got the single choices spot on as Handle Me, Be Mine and Who's that Girl all followed it into the top 5, as did Dream On, guesting on Christian Falk's single in 2008. She's been consistently excellent at providing vocals to others, with three hits with Royksopp, including two #1s, and Caesar with once promising pop singer I Blame Coco.

Her 2010 Body Talk series remains one of the finest pop albums of all time. Lead single Dancing On My Own made it three chart toppers in a row, a song deservedly going on to be a big favourite worldwide, with a further three top 5s from it, Call Your Girlfriend the one of those I go back to most now. The likes of Fembot, Stars 4 Ever and In My Eyes would also have been nailed on top 5 hits from it. It's such a brilliant varied album, and one I go back to frequently over a decade on. Since then, hits with others have continued, two with her project with La Bagatelle Magique, and ones with Jonsi and SG Lewis in 2020. Between that there was her next solo album, again it was remarkably consistent, Missing U was a great lead and title track Honey was at a level higher.

I'm absolutely delighted she has ended as my #1, fully deserving of it.

Well done for completing this! I'm not sure where most users of this forum disappear to between February and December, but I'm glad you've stuck with it.

From your top 10 acts - I've only recently given Wolf Alice much attention, mostly thanks to The Last Man On Earth which clicked with me straight away, then Blue Weekend has become my favourite album of the decade so far, with Silk and Don't Delete The Kisses highlights of their earlier albums for me. One Day Like This would have been another deserving 6-week chart topper for Elbow, and Open Arms is another big fave of mine, but there's a lot I don't know by them. On the other hand, that's a list of one classic song after another under Arcade Fire - once I'd have happily written all day about the likes of Rebellion and Wake Up, but sadly those days appear to be gone - such a waste, but it was great while it lasted. I can't decide if I prefer I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor or Do I Wanna Know? from the Arctics, they're both classics, but the latter's 7-week #1 run is a great sight. I was surprised Robyn came out on top, but that looks an impressive discography from what I know, and With Every Heartbeat is one of my favourite songs of the 2000s.

Thanks RFC for the countdown and commentaries, you've given me literally hundreds of songs to go and seek out now! happy.gif

Well done on finishing this, seemed like quite the task! Sorry, I haven't been commenting, but I have really enjoyed reading.

Some assorted comments (I really like most if not all artists in your top 20!) - Coldplay would probably be number 1 if I were to compile a similar list, they are definitely past their best, but things like Coloratura do keep me interested in them (and make me forget things like My Universe x). I haven't checked for Elbow in a long time, but the Seldom Seen Kid is a classic album and One Day Like This brings back all sorts of beautiful nostalgia, Arctic Monkeys have been very consistent over the years and while their classics are the best, I actually really got into their material last year which is great for a band 17 years on. Still need to check out more of Wolf Alice's older albums, but their last era cemented me as a big fan, The Last Man on Earth in particular is one of my favourite songs of recent years.

Arcade Fire are one of my favourite bands and I will still always hold a lot of their material and Funeral as some of my favourite music, but yes sadly, it's just become a whole lot more awkward to listen to and I doubt I'll be checking them any time soon. Likewise, Kanye has always been an act I've wanted to delve more into, but he doesn't half make it difficult! :/

Congratulations on completing this absolutely mammoth task, sorry for not posting more but I have been following and enjoying your commentaries muchly- it has brought back a lot of great memories for me

Excellent Top 2 there, both Robyn and Arctic Monkeys have been consistently great over a lengthy period with so many highlights. I distinctly remember Robyn going to #1 with “With Every Heartbeat” (and bought the CD single of course)- the first time I heard it I fell in love with it and I remember the bar I heard it at on one of those nights out that you never forget. I also remember a documentary about Robyn and the album on Channel 4(?) later that same year just before “Be Mine” came out, talking about the self-titled album that marked her shift in direction from her debut and how she felt like giving up at one point, but then decided to take control and setup her own independent Konichiwa Records and set about making music that she loved. Having full control over her creative output, how it was presented and sold to the public. It felt really inspiring to see this happening and that music at that time really chimed with me and I really believe that partly expanded and helped shaped my tastes a lot because up to that point if you look at my personal chart it was mostly rock and alternative leaning tracks that I was listening to, with very little pure pop or dance.
Anyway Kleerup posted on the MV recently 'When we wrote this Robyn asked if it was ok to write about my rocky relationship at the time. She witnessed the up’s and down’s since my girlfriend used to tag along sometimes on the Robyn tour in Sweden at that time, then it was released in 2006 in Sweden (as ”Kleerup with Robyn”) and then they wanted to include it on Robyns international release ( as ”Robyn with Kleerup) , and it went all the way to Number 1 in the U.K (and other countries as well) , It really touches me that so many people have so nice things to say , and also that it Still continues to do it’s job and Make people Feel

PS- Calum Scott can get in the bin xx
