The country of contortionists, wild dancers, revolutionary anthems, tinfoil wrapped drag queens, men in boxes, hell machines, sand artists, giants and human sized hamster wheels are back after taking a year's break. The delectable Ryan has leaked me this to post here about the selection process:
With their absence last year I had to rely on Electro Velvet being my home entry so it's great to see Ukrayina back!
Zlata has just released a brand new song and ooh look at the length of it, 2 minutes 57 seconds!
It is quite amazing, would Zlata fancy trying her luck again this year?
they surely will not be sending a song in russian so nah. plus, it doesn't seem like the TYPE
It has apparently been confirmed by Mikhail Nekrasov (Zlata's producer) on VK today that that song will be going into the Ukraine selection, and there's a possibility of translating it into English. Although ESC Kaz remain unsure. Anastasiya Prikhodko is likely to enter as well!
In typical Ukrainian hot mess fashion, virtually everyone who's submitted a song have announced that they have through one form of social media or another. Among them are Zlata, as posted above, Viktoria Petryk (former NF contestand and older sister of the winner of JESC 2012) and hottest mess in the whole darn west NeAngely (maybe they've been learning to sing for the past two years?).
Viktoria's song is also already up on YouTube (from these two Swedish songwriters who have songs in what seems like every single country that accepts foreign composers)
There is potential in that Viktoria song, so excited to have Ukraine back!:D
The national final has been confirmed by esckaz to take place on 21st February, with the semis on 6th and 13th. Submissions close next Wednesday.
The 18 acts competing have been announced
SunSay
Jamala
The Hardkiss
Anastasia Prikhodko
Lavika
Aida Nikolaychyuk
Viktoria Petrik
NeAngely
Peaks of Kings
Svetlana Tarabarova
ALLOISE
Arkadiy Voytyuk
Brunettes Shoot Blondes
Pringlez
Pur: Pur
Tonya Matvienko
Japanda
Vladislav Kurasov
Of course Anastasia Prikhodko represented Russia back in 2009, Viktoria Petrik I'm told did the Junior contest and NeAngely, who tried back in 2014 with this anthem of life
Also announced is that Ruslana and Verka Serduchka (except not in drag) will be on the expert panel!
YAS NEANGELY *o*
Brunettes Shoot Blondes is an intriguing band name.
Intriguing band too, although probably not what you might want from a Ukrainian entry.
Pretty catchy tune from last year, had it around my head for a few weeks towards the end of the summer.
(hurrah for The Hardkiss being in as well)
ooh Jamala is in this after all
Japanda appear to be a Ukrainian Dolly Style only even more kawaii
I am expecting big things!
Amazing! That would be a UK top 10 hit if it had Sigma's name attached to it!
It takes a bit to get going but when it does *.*
Alongside NuAngels the other two favourites so far seem to be Jamala and The Hardkiss:
Both are very good too! Jamala's gave me goosebumps at the end - her song is about "the forceful deportation of Crimean Tatars from Crimea by the Soviet regime in 1944" - so so so much better than 'Smile' which I hated. NuAngels are my favourite of the three with Jamala second but Ukraine should be on to a great entry at this rate.
Jamala's song is incredible. If she wins and they do a Loïc-esque minimalistic but utterly effective number at Eurovision, it's a certain Top 10.
I don't believe she'll win though despite being one of the most promising modern Ukranian artists.
p.s.: nuangels can do rot in a cave with that attempt at a song especially after the marvellous 'courageous' a few years ago.
Surely Anastasia Prikhodko has already bought her way into victory?
Luckily they are only accepting one vote per phone number so it makes it more difficult, albeit still not impossible, to rig the vote! I guess this is why Jamala has been happy to return after what happened in the 2011 national final with her, Mika and Zlata.
Ryan informs me that the first semi final for this starts at 5pm UK time so is a nice little warm up before tonight's main event!
There's been 5 songs so far and I've not heard so much UTTER DROSS in all my life.
WHAT HAPPENED TO SVETLANA & ANI & ZLATA
i love how they mix ukranian and russian and it's like a given :') bron/broen teas *.*
Honestly, The Hardkiss' song sounds amazing. I'm going to be so heartbroken if none of these melodic rock anthems makes it to Eurovision, we have to have one and the more the better.
jamala slaying the hell out of everyone
standing ovation from ruslana *.*
Jamala a class above everyone so far with that performance! The Hardkiss are a clear 2nd so far and the rest are all quite average.
the jury are LOVING her completely. she's literally being called the best performance so far and one of the best modern singers right now!
ruslana did just tell the public to vote for her *.* when will your faves
Aida's being TORN TO SHREDS by the judges. she's beautiful but the song is "average".
it's really like x factor with judges giving feedback about how they could improve the performance lmao
2 everyone: f*** this, MF is on
this thing is STILL ON. oh god. they had 3 songs left when MF started and 2 hours later they only announced the jury results.
jamala won the jury vote. BSB in 2nd and Hardkiss are in 3rd. now it's time for the televoting results
Yeah they had a hour and a half break I think, this is a separate results show. I'm surprised Aida was so low, I thought she might qualify but now I imagine it'll be the same top 3 that the jury chose.
From what I saw Jamala was the only decent one.
Ready for NEANGELY to slay next week
yeah the top 3 really is the same.
Victory for Iz' music taste so far then
Aida doing what I expected in the televote, she should've at least beat most of those first five performances in the jury vote - bar The Hardkiss they were so average, at least Aida's song had a little bit of excitement to it.
Looks like this is Jamala's for the taking!
Ruslana did say all the right things. That the public should vote not based on some little things here and there but on the big picture and the potential results at Eurovision. BITCH KNOWS IT
#jamalatowin
I can't stop watching Jamala's performance, I just love it so much. The way the song starts so quietly and eerie, then the way the volume builds in the second verse, then that middle 8 with the massive a capella note culminating in the production crashing back in for the final chorus and then just when you thought you'd reached the peak she pulls out this insane high note effortlessly. Add all that to the message behind the song and it is just wow!
Now I know it is stupid of me to throw around the phrase "Eurovision winner" and before now the closest thing I've heard to a potential Eurovision winner is probably Mikael Saari and was tempted to do so to Justs earlier today as well but I am going to throw that phrase at this song more than any other I've heard so far this Eurovision season, it's a certain top 5 anyway as long as it gets through this national final of course!
Buzzjack peoples love anti-Soviet/Russian song, you are so predictable.
With all blind and stupid russophobia in Europe, Ukrainian participant even don't need to sing for win in Eurovision.
You coming here expressing your anti-Europe racist homophobic c**t views is way more predictable.
f*** off.
Jamala has made The Guardian newspaper! http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/feb/11/crimean-singer-in-line-to-represent-ukraine-at-eurovision
The choreography and STRUTTING by the backup dancer in the last perf was ON POINT.
Shame the song was totally unmemorable.
NuAngels were really really good, I was expecting weak vocals but I was totally proven wrong. The only issue they have is their strong accents but overall I think that would win if Jamala wasn't in the selection!
At least NeAngely made the final so tonight can be somewhat REDEEMED somwhere
Drama in Ukrayina as the two favourites may break Eurovision rules.
SunSay have done an Anja Nissen and performed their song in 2015 a lot except it was actually https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCMKezpd88k a year ago.
And Jamala's lyrics in the chorus have apparently been 'borrowed' from a traditional Crimean Tatar song.
multiple good quality recordings from summer '15 are already breaking the rules.
these people ;_;
Ukraine have been amazingly kind and have provided a stream with live English commentary!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwXBwXR1Jhs
style over substance
the phrase that can describe hardkiss entirely
they are calling themselves musical innovators in ukraine. LOL yeah no one ever did what you did there
Ruslana the only one giving totally positive comments to Jamala with the other two being very mixed, it'll be interesting to see what they say to SunSay...
Ruslana will probably rank her top but the other two are going to put her near the bottom by the sounds of it. So Jamala will have to hope she wins the televote and hope that SunSay aren't more than one place ahead of her in the combined jury vote.
Not Ruslana being the sensible one in the end!
That is ridicuous. Her semifinal critique was SO positive! Hardly anything (but the dress) changed since then. What the f***
NOT this massive discussion between the jury about the eligibility of SunSay.
This is descending into chaos! The jury could sink SunSay as well as Jamala based on that, The Hardkiss could sneak through here
Somehow JAMALA is our winner!
YASSS at Jamala winning. Honestly that national final went on for what it seemed days. GOD.
if we can trust wiki jamala and hardkiss both got 11 (5+6) and since jamala was top of the televote she won. yay
Can Ukraine have an internal selection for 2017 please?
And for it to be NeAngely.
It's really amazing how she's gone from this horrible song:
To this amazing one:
'1944' is oddly captivating, almost hypnotic so I'm glad to see Jamala go to Stockholm!
i was about to have a heart attack seeing you post here again. WAS IT SUDDENLY DISQUALIFIED?! WAS IT CHANGED TO ANOTHER ENTRY?! WHY WOULD RYAN POST HERE AGAIN A FEW MINUTES AFTER SHE WON?!
That mess of a NF aside, I expect this is going to be if not the biggest then at least one of the biggest stories of the year come Stockholm time (indeed some lightning fast journoqueen has already got in there with the Guardian article). Don't rule this out.
everyone else already does after all
woah, I thought many other contestants would take part in this... anyway, Pur:Pur didn't impress me at all, Runnin' (Lose It All) is okay, Hardkiss' song is gorgeous but hard-to-memorize, Brunettes Shoot Blondes are the best for me (cool echo to some kind of British music), SunSay - um, too rubbish, Jamala is good but this balance between being lachrymose and strong as a stone (with this Loic Nottet's minimalism) made me feel kinda uncomfortable.
So my unnecessary thought is BSB to be #1.
'1944' is amazing. Dying to see what this performance looks like in May.
This is so good, really unique and captivating
The EBU https://twitter.com/EBU_HQ/status/707568496079675393 that the reference group have decided that '1944' doesn't contain political speech and does not break Eurovision rules, and rightly so!
Fascinating interview with Jamala in the video below, amazing insights into the meaning of the song beyond what we had already read and we get to meet her adorable dog too!
She's really down to earth and likeable. Can this song win tbh
!
A video of Jamala performing a song then called 'Our Crimea' (according to ESC Kaz) in May 2015 has suddenly been made available online (despite being uploaded a year ago), and it turns out it is a Crimean Tatar-only version of what became '1944'.
(From 4 minutes in)
Potentially adds a new layer of politics, but I don't think the fact it was performing in May 2015 is an issue just like it wasn't for Anja Nissen or Anouk etc.
People are really trying to do anything and everything to try and take Ukraine's win away from them...what with the petitions, cries of suspect/mistaken jury voting and now this. Wish they would just let it rest.
I don't expect Australia would want to win it in this way if the EBU had suddenly decided to void the result due to any of these instances.
God people need to stop being salty about this, she won and that's that. 2nd on both jury and televote is a rightful winner, as much as I love Dami. Dami only came 4th on televote which was her downfall sadly (bloody Poland). I mean I'd have preferred Dami but Jamala gave such an emotionally charged, stunning performance, it was beautiful. Just because a Western focused pop song didn't win for once it's suddenly an outrage and "all political!!!11111!1" rears its ugly head again.
I'm really coming around to 1944, the performance made it click properly although it was growing pre-contest.
Sure it's not my favourite winner but it's a refreshing change to have something different win, and it's actually quite nice to have a completely uncommercial winner. I think people tend to forget (me included sometimes, when I just assumed Frans would win as it was the most contemporary song) that this is a contest to find the best song, not the biggest hit/potential smash.
That said, despite being uncommercial, it's at least contemporary and sounds like it belongs to 2016, unlike Russia. The contest will be all the better next year for Jamala winning as more people will take risks and send more interesting and different sounding tracks. I was fearing a Sergey win as people might have mistakenly thought that dated cliched schlager was suddenly back in vogue. They still might but at least this proves that throwing the iamspamspamamisink into the performance of an average song won't help it to win.
Ooh, caught by the filter for the first time in years *.*
russian news outlets are genuinely reporting that the organisers fixed the results of the voting to make ukraine win. oops. it didn't occur to them that the rules were set in place before jamala was even selected to represent ukraine. poor jealous hoes :')
Music video released next Thursday
Very good video, excellent in fact! Reminds me a little bit of a Sia video which is a very big compliment of course considering the standard of her videos.
Brilliant concept, works really well and it's great to finally have a music video for this.
Probably the best music video a winning Eurovision entry has got in a long time.
Incredible video
During the Germany national selection show.
This is really powerful and I'm touched she gave her best performance of her life!
'1944' has been really emotional to listen to in recent days, she did fantastic here
'1944' was my favourite song that year anyway but it reaches a whole new level now </3 x
