Steve, are you always way behind BBC4 or is it just me? Not picking on your great posts, just wondered.

Just checking,I see that the original version of Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You was by George Benson in 1985.

As a chart afficianado I never knew that.

I am lol, only ever get to watch it at the weekends as I've so much on my planner. I'll try to get another one done tomorrow if possible!

Really liking 1988 in general some fantastic indie-pop tracks from Fairground/Everything But The Girl/Aztec Camera and House finally has become pop!!

Top of the Pops 21/7/1988 Presented by Andy Crane & Peter Powell

S-Express SuperFly Guy No20 NE
Def Leppard Love Bites (Video) No12
Everything But The Girl I Don't Wanna Talk About It No3
The Mac Band Roses Are Red No8
Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers Tomorrow People No22
Michael Jackson Dirty Diana (Video) No4
Kim Wilde You Came No16
***No1 Glenn Medeiros Nothings Gonna Change My Love For You (Video) No1*** (3 weeks)
George Michael Monkey (Video) No13

We miss out on the 14/7/1988 due to the poor quality of the archive footage unfort. There's always something which stops us seeing every episode!! Welcome to Andy Crane who was let out of the Broom Cupboard on CBBC. I remember him on it when I was younger. Peter Powell looks very formal in his suit too. The studios really bright with all the lights now on the stages!!

S-Express with a lesser known second hit to start.

Fantastic to see another studio performance of the stunning I Don't Wanna Talk About It. I see the BBC Orcastra returned for the performance as well 😀. Deserved a no1 spot!!

The Mac Band are back again with fairly typical late 80s rnb funk. Ziggy Marley follows with a bit of reggae and Tomorrow People, is that Bobs son? Anyway, there's a lot of studio performances tonight which I won't complain about.

We do get another video though, this time from Michael Jackson with Dirty Diana, the latest hit from the huge Bad album. Actually surprised they didn't cut this. We get another studio performance from the lovely Kim Wilde, can't be many left by 1988 and the video of Glenn Medeiros as he stays at no1 for a third week!

We finish up with the video for George Michaels new single Monkey. Can't say I've heard it before!

Yes Ziggy is Bob's son, Kim had 90's hits with If I Can't Have You and Love Is Holy and a follow-up to Four Letter Word, so I'd guess at least 3 more appearances to go?

Monkey was a late Faith single, remixed by Jam & Lewis and a 4th US chart-topper from Faith, I loved it more than most of the other tracks on the album smile.gif

Top of the Pops 28/7/1988 Presented by Nicky Campbell & Gary Davies

Shakin Stevens Feel The Need In Me No26
B.V.S.M.P I Need You (Video) No22
Siouxsie & The Banshees Peek-a-Boo No30 NE

** Breakers Voice Of The Beehive I Say Nothing (Video) No37
** Breakers All About Eve Marthas Harbour (Video) No36
** Breakers Steven Dante I'm Too Scared (Video) No34
** Breakers Julia Fordham Happy Ever After (Video) No39 NE

Pat Benatar All Fired Up (Video) No23
Yazz and the Plastic Population The Only Way Is Up No10
***No1 Glenn Medeiros Nothings Gonna Change My Love For You No1***
Fairground Attraction Find My Love (Video) No32

We have an 80s legend starting us off with another totp performance long after I thought he was past his peak. I guess he was easy to get on live. Then a video from a boy band I've never heard ofBVSMP - I Need You sounds very like Return of the Mack a bit!!

Next we have the wonderful Siouxie & the Banshees live in the studio with Peek-a-Boo love that band.

We have the return of the top 40 breakers which is a bad thing for me, the last edition didn't have them and it had loads of live performances which is what I want. We then get a video of the new Pat Benatar single All Fired Up from the album Wide Awake In Dreamland Pat is known to me because she still gets playlisted still on radio 2 but I haven't heard much I know from her, anyone else have a view?

Next we have a Yazz and the Plastic Population in the studio with the fantastic The Only Way is Up and one of the biggest pop hits of 1988 with house at its peak in terms of pop. I love this track and the lead singer looks amazing but it sounds similar to a lot of other house tracks at the time, looking forward to that sound becoming bigger in terms of beats. I've a feeling this will be performed a lot more in the next few weeks.

Next it's no1 for a fourth week Glenn Medeiros Nothings Gonna Change My Love For You in a non moving top 5. And the video for the new Fairground Attraction single Find My Love, a let down after the wonderful Perfect.

I like that Siouxsie song. It has an unusual arrangement to it.

As for Pat Benatar,I don't remember 'All Fired Up' much. Her two highlights for me are 'Love Is A Battlefield' and 'We Belong' from a few years earlier.

Yes I checked her chart history out on polyhex and it said Love is a battlefield was a no17 re release hit in 1985. Was that the same song as an American idol winner released a few years back?

'Big Fun' by Inner City to close the show - great tune - you can tell the 90s definitely are on their way now. The Proclaimers also showing how upbeat guitar based indie was already on its rise now ahead of the 90s with the classic tune '1000 Miles'.

No laugh.gif

Love Is A Battlefield is like what you were saying with Temptation - Heaven 17, a little bit of a 90s dance sound there ahead of time, especially with the backing vocals.

I love the random 'AIN'T THIS THE MOTHER' sample in Superfly Guy. laugh.gif

It really has a hybrid sound I think, Communards style Hi-NRG influences mixed with house influences for that bassline.

Top of the Pops 4/8/19 Presented by Janice Long & Mark Goodier

Kylie Minogue The Locomotion No2 NE
Fairground Attraction Find My Love No14
Voice Of The Beehive I Say Nothing No25
Kim Wilde You Came No4
Funky Worm Hustle! (To The Music) No17
All About Eve Marthas Harbour No22
***No1 Yazz and The Plastic Population The Only Way Is Up No1***
S-Express Supa Fly Guy (Video) No6

We start off with a Kylie classic with 'The Locomotion' a big NE for 1988 in at No2. Fairground Attraction are next with their 2nd and sadly final top 40 hit 'Find My Love'. Not a patch on 'Perfect' but lovely all the same. Voice Of The Beehive give us our third studio performance in a row which is pleasing although maybe not so much if we knew what was to come. I Say Nothing is quite nice though a bit like Haim in 2019.

A fourth studio performance in a row by Kim Wilde and pleasingly this is no4. Although it's a performance from a few weeks back. She's looking as stunning as ever although her musical output got very SAW sounding like a lot of other artists by this stage. Suppose they all did it to keep the hits coming in this new era.

A fifth studio performance and we get a bit of House with Funky Worm, think I've actually heard this before and hadn't realised who it was. Sounds alright now slightly different to the usual stuff in 1988, more of a drop to it.

We musnt be having videos in this episode - I'm happy if that's the case. Anyway next it's a bit of pop TV history with the infamous performance of Marthas Harbour by All About Eve. It's just so cringeworthy even today, I found myself shouting at the TV to bloody sing woman. It's takes away from the fact the song is stunning!!! The look on Janice's face was hilarious after.

We have a new no1 with the fantastic The Only Way Is Up by Yazz - still played on a Friday night to this very day.

Super Fly Guy by S-Express finishes the show and finally it's a song in video format.

Anyone know if that's Janice's last show?

Not a fan of 'You Came' for that reason. 'Never Trust A Stranger' is better though from her imo.
