Today Digital Spy have written an article about Eurovision using some quotes from Scott Mills which you can read below. Despite our bad result this year (yet still better than we deserved) I feel like I've seen less articles moaning about politics and more articles moaning about song choice, and I'm very glad about that!
I do wonder what direction the BBC will go down this year, I think Guy will be very aware of the negative reaction he and the rest of the team got this year and will go for something more safe with his internal selection - something along the lines of Molly. Although if he can't find anyone internally (if Electro Velvet were the best of the 300 submissions then maybe there's no-one good enough putting themselves forward), then maybe he'll revert back to a national final so the public can only blame themselves when it goes wrong. I'd like to stick with an internal selection as our entries since 2009 have on the whole been better than during the mid-2000s, but even still we should be coming up with a Jade, a Blue or a Molly every year. QUOTE UK needs a killer song for Eurovision 2016, says Scott Mills
Yet again, the UK failed miserably at the Eurovision Song Contest earlier this year, finishing 24th overall after Electro Velvet failed to pull in the votes. We haven't won the competition since 1997 when Katrina and the Waves sailed to victory, so what do we need to do next year to turn our fortunes around? "We still see it as a joke, and that's where the problem lies," BBC Three Eurovision commentator Scott Mills told Digital Spy. "They see us seeing it as a joke, and therefore they don't buy into what we do. "The trouble is, it's now a multi-million Euro competition with actually quite good production values, and sometimes not half bad songs. But we still see it as the Eurovision Song Contest from the '80s and '90s, where it's kind of like, 'Let's laugh at some Serbians'. "There is an element of that, which is why we love it, but also, if we're not taking it seriously, they know that now. "We've tried everything; novelty, brand new singer, heritage singers. I think we now just need a killer song by someone that can really perform it. We need to look like we're taking it seriously, and then I think we'll do a lot better." Mills added: "Because we laugh at it and it has this stigma attached to it, probably One Direction, or Olly Murs, or Robbie Williams aren't going to do it. "These other countries will send what they think is one of their best singers. Often it'll be someone who has won The Voice or The X Factor, so they're quite well known. "I think they don't quite get why we're not sending our biggest acts." The Eurovision Song Contest 2016 will be held in Stockholm, Sweden following Måns Zelmerlöw's win earlier this year with 'Heroes'. Meanwhile, Scott Mills will be heading to Virgin Media's Louder Lounge at V Festival this weekend. The two-day music event will be headlined by Calvin Harris and Kasabian, with further sets from Sam Smith, Paloma Faith and Ellie Goulding. Digital Spy |

I think the BBC don't usually care about 'public backlash' but seeing as viewing figures in the UK took a hammering this year that might be the 1 thing to make them take notice and put some effort in.

Yeah true, it does seem that they care about viewing figures rather than public opinion. The last time they dropped significantly (for Josh in 2010) they bounced back with a lot of effort for Blue in 2011, so hopefully they will follow that pattern again!

My toes curled for the entire 3 minutes when I saw the pathetic Electro Velvet in Vienna. They said they were providing the "fun" element.. I never saw so many punters run to the bar! A horrible entry, made all the worse when considering the progress we made in 2014.
Anything will be better than 2015 TBH. |

Eurovision 2016: Public to decide UK entry in X Factor-style search
QUOTE IT'S been so long since the United Kingdom excelled at Eurovision that it'll soon be 20 years since our last win. But BBC bosses are hoping to finally bring the humiliating losing streak to an end with a new X Factor-style talent hunt encouraging the public to have the final say on who will represent the United Kingdom next spring. Between now and November, up and coming acts will be invited to submit an original track for consideration, after which a specially chosen panel will whittle the entrants down to a final shortlist and viewers will make the ultimate decision on who should fly the Union Jack in Sweden. Hugh Goldmsith, a record label exec who helped take Atomic Kitten, Billie Piper and Blue to the top of the charts, is taking the lead for the project; while Graham Norton will return to provide commentary on the actual ceremony next May. "Eurovision is one of the highlights of my year and I love the fact that the BBC is launching its biggest song search ever," the chat show king said in a statement. He continued: "I think it really shows that they take the competition seriously and the fact that the public will get the final say on who is sent to represent the UK in Stockholm next year is the icing on the cake!" The BBC's Guy Freeman added: "This year really will be the biggest song search for Eurovision the BBC has ever undertaken. "With input from key industry figures and fan associations, plus with the public having the final say we are looking forward to seeing a true People's Eurovision entry representing the UK at next year's competition in Sweden." http://www.express.co.uk/showbiz/tv-radio/...or-style-search Would be nice to get to have a say again and hopefully have a bit more publicity surrounding our entry. And I'd hope for no Scooch type in the selection to potentially be chosen (as much as that's my jam), but...they did pick Electro Velvet this year (as much as that's a jam too ). |

I don't get why they won't just have the winner of The Voice go on to do SOMETHING with their career and have them represent us at Eurovision? I'm sure if they asked, will.i.am would be more than happy to help with writing and maybe producing something for us?

I'm sure if they asked, will.i.am would be more than happy to help with writing and maybe producing something for us? because that would put people off entering The Voice?? I'm glad it's not like that anyway, imagine Stevie McCrorie representing us last year :/ at least Electro Velvet were a fun entry, he would've flopped and been boring. |

If the specially chosen panel contains John Barrowman we're still f***ed.
But it's great to see a public vote finally happening for the UK again! |

I can see the good and bad in this, if the BBC don't feel obligated to put the token 'lol eurovision' song in the final mix then there's every chance the song won't be terrible.

I wish this was more like Melodifestivalen though. That system is really good and we're likely to get a nice range of variety as opposed to just having one song written for us and them being boring/uneventful etc..

I think I'm going to have to cringe a bit.
But, let's try it, let's see if the public don't completely f*** it up. I think it's more likely we'll get a boring 'Voice-esque' entry out of this than a silly one, but you never know, there may be a diamond in the rough. |

I still don't trust Britain not to f*** this up, look at the likes of Ben Haenow and Andrea Begley (as lovely as she was, her voice was just "nice") winning popstar/singing competitions over say Fleur or Leah McFall. I'd love something like Melfest, with decent names compeition, it's a shame that Eurovision is just a joke here though because nobody would ever enter it. I feel like if we did do it, it'd be the same sort of washed up singers who go on CBB or I'm A Celeb. In Sweden it's such a huge thing and an honour to represent your country, so there are so many big names who want to battle to compete, but it probably kill a career in the UK so it would only be those who don't have a career left who'd enter...
To be fair though, it's more about the song than anything. I'd rather have an unknown or some boyband reject with a killer song than Ed Sheeran for example with a crap boring song. |
