Albums first!

30

But how can an album with two of the years best singles be at the bottom?! you might ask. Well, the simple reason is that it is easily the worst album I've bought all year. Barring 'Kids' and 'Time To Pretend' there's really not much there at all. The other single 'Electric Feel' is alright, but much better in remix form of which none are on the album. 'Weekend Wars' is tolerable too. When recently listening to each album to decide the ordering this was the only album I stopped listening to before the end. Therefore it has to be at the bottom. The biggest disappointment of the year by far. Dreadful.

This is far from being a poor album. However it is a bit....dull. I quite liked the two singles I'd heard and it was cheap on iTunes so used the Complete My Album function. It's decent enough and certainly pleasant. It's just not an album that's ever going to inspire me to listen to it very often. I do love the full 10 minute version of 'Midnight Surprise' though, certainly the albums highlight.

2005's 'Tower of Love' album promised much, with songs such as 'My Patch' and 'Key of C' I thought Jim Noir had a great future ahead of him. Move forwards three years and he's failed to deliver with his second, self-titled, album. It's a decent enough album but there's not really any progression from his debut, which is hugely disappointing. When it's good it's very good, 'Look Around You' and 'Ships & Clouds' are as good as anything from the debut, but the album too often wanders into filler. And some of the lyrics are quite awful really. Sometimes the delivery and instrumentation save them and make them quite good ('Happy Day Today') but not always, 'Day By Day By Day' and 'Good Old Vinyl' are beyond embarassing.

Anything involving Damon Albarn is always going to spark my interest, even Monkey, a soundtrack to a Chinese Opera stage show. I think I should possibly have placed the album higher as it is clearly very good but there's just too much that's not for me and goes straight over my head. The uses of so many instruments is always interesting and never tires and the vocals can be something of interest as well. It's all sung in some form of Chinese and can sometimes get a bit irritating, not because it's in a language I have zero understanding of, purely because of the way it's delivered, often being rather screechy and high pitched. It's certainly not for everyone and I don't expect many to like it, though I think everyone should open their minds to it. 'Monkey Bee' is the track most likely to appeal, and probably the best, though I rather like 'Heavenly Peach Banquet' too.

sad.gif How I wanted to love this album after 'A&E'! I think the main problem with this album is that it doesn't flow well enough and there doesn't seem to be the focus there should be, it tries to be too many things and is too much like all three of their previous albums. And apart from 'A&E' there's nothing on here which isn't completely trounced by stuff on previous efforts. Oh, and the two further singles, especially 'Caravan Girl', are vile. The only two I ever skip. On the whole, the album is a decent album, it's just neither as good as I wanted it to be or as good as I expected it to be!

If you get past the awful name of this band and the even worse album cover this is actually a rather good album. They remind me a lot of CSS, only they're fronted by a male and better. The album does drag a bit in the middle but starts well (especially the opener 'Me & Your Daughter') and finishes even stronger with 'Confections' and 'Sophisticated Side Ponytail'.

The Fratellis were about the only mainstream indie band to break through in the '04-'07 period who I really had much time for. I thought their debut was generally strong if slightly patchy in places. This album is pretty much more of the same. It's decent enough and there are some really good songs on here, but there are two or three weak ones too. I can understand why it's been pretty much a complete flop though in terms of commercial success. 'Mistress Mabel' and moreso 'Look Out Sunshine' aren't really going to inspire that many people. 'A Heady Tale', 'Shameless' or 'Straggler's Moon' might have done.

I thought when I bought Laura Marling's album that it'd end up being high in my End of Year chart judging from what I'd read and heard about me. And whilst yes, you would never think it's a 17 year old and there are lyrics that go way beyond her years it does get a bit samey in places and I was expecting much better. There are still four or five excellent songs on here though, it is a good album. Would've been higher had she included 'New Romantic', probably her best song!

I first heard of Rubies when randomly coming across single 'I Feel Electric' at the beginning of the year. I thought it was really promising and when I saw 'Explode From The Center' on iTunes cheap as part of a promotion campaign of new acts buying it was a no brainer. It certainly took quite a few listens to really appreciate but it's certainly a good album and coupled with 'Dreamhunt' (a track off Shinichi Osawa's 'The One', and one of the best things I've heard all year) I shall certainly be looking out for these two Swedish ladies in the future. This being in the bottom third of this countdown really does underline the strength of albums this year!

This album was bought completely on a whim and I'm really glad I did buy it as it's pretty good. I can't really remember the stuff from previous album(s) but I remember I was never really impressed. The two singles off this this year though were something different, much more mellow and poppy. The album isn't quite in the same vein though it is very good, it's far less shouty and much more enjoyable then I ever remember them previously being!

I adore Seventh Tree, and I think it does flow well (in so much that all the songs are in the same vibe). Each to their own I guess> I agree about Monkey too - I like it as Albarn is invloved but not sure I entirely get it!

MGMT album is a bit meh. I agree with your commentary. I liked it the first few times I played it but now it's just dull.

Goldfrapp album was the same really. A bit boring after a while but 'A+E' is x10 wub.gif obviously.

Don't have NPSH's album ohmy.gif Need that asap.

I haven't given Laura Marling a good enough chance really but I quite liked it when I first listened need to go back to it.

V.good Mark so far happy.gif One looks forward to the rest.

Last year the Klaxons album was my least favourite album of the Year & it subsequently won the accolade of NME Album of The Year....

It looks like it is your turn to disagree with the NME Journos...

I've got 4 of your albums from 21-30. I will enjoy this countdown of yours as I always have done as you always seems to be one of the few posters who is completely unafraid to say if an act you love has released a record that sucks badly.

My Album of The Year countdown will probably be delivered in the first week of January (after my Singles/Records of The Year countdown) as I expect to receive a handful of late albums as Xmas presents and I want to have the time to place them into my countdown....

Thankyou! I would probably have put Klaxons right near the bottom last year, but I never bought it!

I would've done mine at the end of the year too but I'll have much less time in the new year and probably won't have listened enough to form a solid enough opinion of them!

This is the album I've had the least amount of time, having only downloaded it from Amazon for £3 a week ago. I've listened to it five times now and have decided it belongs here though in time I could well feel it's in the wrong position, there's potential for me to love it far more than this but at the same time it's Girls Aloud, so it could well end up in Jim Noir teritory... Although I do like this album I do think it could do with being a bit shorter, which is a shame as the songs at the end are amongst the best yet I'm usually a bit bored by that time, however it's the middle which is where that album is poor, getting rid of 'Fix Me Up' and 'Revolution In The Head' (average-ness galore) would drastically improve the quality. Those two aside, the album is very good (although I've still not clicked with 'The Promise' - it's so far from their best!) and 'The Loving Kind', 'Turn To Stone' and 'Live In The Country' are certainly three of my favorutie pop songs of the year!

After 'Boys & Girls In America' was my #4 of 2007 (yeah I know it was originally out in '06 but PAH!) the news that The Hold Steady were making a new album made it my second most anticipated album this year (my most will be revealed in a short while :|) however, it didn't live up to my expectations at all. It starts off really well with 'Constructive Summer' being the type of thing which showed they've progressed. First single 'Sequestered In Memphis' was excellent too, stick-in-your-head catchy without being at all annoying. It continues to go well until about half way through where as good as the songs are, we've heard it all before. I would put it lower, but to be fair it is a good album, just not as good as I'd hoped or expected.

There was so much hype about 'Hitten' but I couldn't see the fuss at all, no matter how much I listened to it. Things I heard after that though were better and I thought they did show promise and bought this album on a bit of a whim. It's certainly very good and has helped me appreciate 'Hitten' a lot more than I did, I still don't think it's quite as good as people say though. The album is slightly patchy in places but on the whole is a throughly enjoyable listen!
