BuzzJack Music Forum _ Ariana Grande _ positions • 6th Album

Posted by: Jade Jun 16 2020, 06:04 PM

Thought it's finally time for an AG6 speculation thread as rumour mill is going wild today!

Especially this:

'Love Boy' is rumoured as a Doja Cat collaboration and apparently 'Skip' has The Weeknd listed as a writer ;o here for 'Love Me Harder' part 2.

There is definitely some solid truth to 'Nasty' existing as that's a song that Ariana posted a random snippet of months ago on instagram.

How do we feel and what do we want from AG6?

Posted by: Klumzee Jun 16 2020, 06:07 PM

The song title 'Skip' seems open to abuse if it's disappointing laugh.gif Either it will be skipped or go in a skip! I'm glad she's had a little bit of a break to let us breathe but she's not exactly ever disappeared, I'm hoping this is a 2021 release so that we can anticipate a release more.

Posted by: Jordan Lee Jun 16 2020, 06:09 PM

I’m hoping this is a 2021 release too.

She needs to disappear after ROMs success wears off so that we can fully get a chance to miss her.

I wonder what sound she’s gonna go down. I’m thinking it’ll likely sound more along the lines of thank u, next than Dangerous Woman though.

Posted by: Jade Jun 16 2020, 06:16 PM

Yeah I'm hoping for a 2021 release too! She's notched up a #1 (or two in the U.S.) for 2020 now so it seems like a good time to slowly fade away with releases so we really get that hunger back towards the end of the year. Judging by the 'Nasty' snippet a while ago, I would think it'll be most like 'thank u, next' sonically, but who knows!

Oh completely! If 'Nasty' makes it, then it's very 'thank u, next' esque and then I suppose we'll get a couple of pop bops (Ala 'bad idea'/'bloodline') due to Max and Ilya's involvement. Saying that 'buwyg,ib' is also a Max and Ilya track.

If it is anywhere near the standard of 'thank u, next' then I'll be happy.

Posted by: Slick Jun 18 2020, 04:37 PM

I hope she waits until 2021 for this. I LOVE Ariana, and I love that she's been bringing smash after smash, but she's in danger of being overexposed. Another 6 months before anything new would do nicely.

Posted by: Jade Jun 28 2020, 08:23 PM

Apparently a song produced by Pharrell called 'The Art Of Sex' has been registered ohmy.gif that title argh, BuzzJack rejoices at Pharrell x

(some people speculating that it might be a scrapped 'Sweetener' song but who knows)

Posted by: Cameron Jun 28 2020, 08:28 PM

Ew. She can keep this album if it is not Dangerous Woman part 2. I just pray she doesn't release another boring copycat formula like she did with 'boyfriend'

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Jun 28 2020, 08:38 PM

I find it really hard to be excited about her music these days, but I know she has it in her to bring the goods.. so fingers crossed!

She definitely needs to leave it another year or so though.

Posted by: Andrew. Jun 28 2020, 08:39 PM

I'm reminded of Mariah's 'The Art Of Letting Go'. I'm in a minority who loved Pharrell's work on Sweetener so hype if this is on the album ph34r.gif

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 Jun 28 2020, 08:57 PM

If it’s anything like sweetener era Ariana then I think I’ll be a fan wub.gif

I’m hoping she leaves this until 2021 though it would be a bad move for her to release again this year. We really need some Ariana free time so we can miss her and also so she can enjoy some well deserved non promo time and have some time to herself. I guess in a way lockdown could’ve also done that but yeah hopefully Ariana herself is wanting to have a bit of a break before releasing new music.

It’s kinda odd saying you don’t want new music from someone you’re a fan of but it’s purely because I know it’ll have maximum impact if I have the opportunity to miss her laugh.gif

Posted by: kye Jun 28 2020, 09:35 PM

anything with pharrell she can keep x

Posted by: Jonjo Jun 28 2020, 10:00 PM

Work with Max, Savan and Ilya again please cry.gif

Posted by: Jade Jun 29 2020, 09:26 PM

The BLACKPINK rumours are back again laugh.gif because Jennie had an instagram caption saying "no tears to cry" and there's a title called 'Clash' floating round, listed as an unreleased song on Genius or something. Take with a pinch of salt as ever, but it would be a logical next step after both appeared on Chromatica *.*

Posted by: JulianNial Jun 30 2020, 05:26 PM

I mean... I wouldn't be mad at all. happy.gif

Posted by: *Callum Jul 2 2020, 05:18 PM

The BLACKPINK/Ari collab rumours have been floating about for almost a year now. BP’s second single from this new era is supposed to be released at the end of July/start of August and is allegedly featuring a Western artist (presumably Ariana).

Posted by: JulianNial Jul 12 2020, 01:07 PM

Okay I LOVE that she's working with some different producers, especially if they're responsible for THOSE songs. dance.gif

Getting hyped!

Posted by: Jade Jul 23 2020, 05:20 PM

Not specifically AG6 but as we've already been discussing BLACKPINK in here...

Lots of people speculating that this featured artist is Ariana! Would make sense with all the rumours. Fingers crossed cheeseblock.png

I mean, they are serial collaborators along with Ari and Nicki, so I wouldn't even be surprised laugh.gif

Posted by: Jade Jul 30 2020, 12:07 PM

The BLACKPINK feature rumours had changed to Selena Gomez yesterday, but now back to Ariana today because Scooter Braun has been followed on Twitter by YG Entertainment laugh.gif bring on an official confirmation drama.gif

Posted by: Jade Aug 6 2020, 07:57 PM

Rap ballad sounds kinda intriguing ;o I really like Travis too so I'd be here for them working together

Posted by: LJ JORD 7 Aug 6 2020, 08:21 PM

Rap Ballad. Is that sort of along the lines of Eminem and Rihanna’s Love The Way You Lie?

Yeah that was the first male/female rap ballad to come into my head too! I'm here for something as dramatic as that tbh

Posted by: Bjork Sep 15 2020, 10:33 AM

new single this Friday against Bieber?

Posted by: Jade Sep 15 2020, 11:12 AM

She removed ‘Rain On Me’ from her bio minutes after posting this stuff ohmy.gif

Posted by: jlj Sep 15 2020, 12:07 PM

I’m worried tbh. I think if she waited (around) another 6 or so month before releasing a solo single it would potentially be more of an event.

She was so everywhere last year and then this year she’s had two US #1s with her collaborations, I still think that a little breather would be good for the time being not a huge gap but give us a chance to miss her before her next era starts.

Posted by: JulianNial Sep 15 2020, 03:19 PM

Odd that she removed the 'Rain On Me' promo, I was feeling like we won't get anything super soon. I was hoping she would wait a little longer, but it still gets me hyped.

If anything I'll be happy with a single, but an album can wait until Q1 next year.

Posted by: LewisGT Sep 15 2020, 08:33 PM

The clip sounds beautiful heart.gif

I'm always down for new music from Ari so I'm obviously very excited. I hope it hasn't come too soon to avoid it from seeming like overkill for the general public because it really doesn't feel like she's had much of a break yet. I thought she probably should have waited until early next year.

Posted by: Brightest Blue Sep 15 2020, 09:01 PM

If she can wait until like, March 2021, then she could smash just as hard again. I feel like 2020 is a bit too soon, considering Rain On Me and Suck With You are still doing decently on Spotify!

Posted by: Jade Sep 23 2020, 10:20 PM

Interesting! I look forward to hearing this evolution.

Still hoping for a 2021 release as that would be a 2 year gap since the 'thank u, next' album - feels like a good amount of time.

Posted by: JulianNial Sep 24 2020, 08:10 AM

Oh yes we like a Tayla Parx track, I'll be curious to hear the Little Mix tracks to see what vibe we might expect. Seriously hoping we are not going down the 'thank u, next 2.0' root.

Posted by: John-James Sep 24 2020, 10:23 AM

Excited to hear she’s evolving the sound. That thank u next sound was starting to get rather dull and predictable

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Sep 24 2020, 11:00 AM

I think waiting until at least mid-2021 to launch this would probably be the best.

I hope she switches it up a little and moves away from this minimalist 'vibey' thing, I am really bored of her at this point to be honest.

Posted by: LewisGT Oct 7 2020, 07:19 PM

Exciting! dance.gif

Posted by: Jade Oct 7 2020, 10:22 PM

Both Ari and Lorde hinting today?! Suddenly the future looks less bleak

Posted by: jlj Oct 8 2020, 12:27 AM

Ariana pls!!

I keep saying this about a few females but I wonder how Ariana will approach her next era.

If we’ll get a lead single, video, promo and a follow up then the album or will she surprise us like Taylor did and just drop the album.

I mean Ariana was the biggest female in pop for a time, she’s huge on social media and a huge streamer too. I’m still low key hoping that Ariana waits until 2021 to drop the album but I’m very interested at what direction she’s gonna go in. I mean I’d love a real vocal album like a modernised 80’s Whitney 90’s Celine type vibe but modernised. I’d love a new solo ballad from her too!

I’m expecting a more R&B sound like a more grown up Yours Truly if to compare to her previous albums.

If we want a #1 I’m thinking she could possibly get it if she releases the following week when her competition is Sam Smith.

With Sam I can see them selling around the 30-40k region which Ariana should be able to manage to beat if we go by thank u, nexts opening! But yeah Bruce will likely sell a lot in week one. Arianas streams will be big id imagine it’s just guessing what her physicals will be like without a pre order being available at present.

Well I suppose with the release not being far away, there may not be any physicals straight away?

Posted by: jlj Oct 14 2020, 05:51 PM

Possibly!

She may sell more downloads however in week one than what her previous albums have because of this.

Posted by: Blade Oct 14 2020, 06:11 PM

I know Ari hasn't really been out of the public eye (two Billboard #1s during her year off, lol) but I do feel like it's been a good amount of time since we had a proper studio album campaign from her now, over a year and a half. So excited for every little detail to come out like the title, album cover, possible features etc wub.gif

Posted by: jlj Oct 14 2020, 06:48 PM

I mean this is no different really to how Rihanna used to drop albums really and she had some well known collaborations in between those too the way Ariana has this year happy.gif.

In a way I’m hoping for another no features album from Ari again! I’m excited for the name. I wonder if this artwork will follow the upside down theme or if this’ll be right side up?

Posted by: Gerald Oct 14 2020, 06:56 PM

OMG I am so excited that AG6 is coming THIS MONTH!!! cheeseblock.png Rih, take notes please!!! Can't believe Ari would have released 4 ALBUMS since ANTI.

Posted by: GhoulOdyssey Oct 17 2020, 05:07 PM

Hopefully out this Friday!

Posted by: Blade Oct 17 2020, 05:20 PM

So is 'Positions' the name of the single, album or both? thinking.gif so excited anyway!

Posted by: jlj Oct 17 2020, 05:59 PM

Of her past eras, twice the lead single has been the album title! So it could be likely that Positions may actually be the name of both.

Posted by: Blade Oct 17 2020, 06:04 PM

I think I'll rename this thread 'Positions' and change it if the album title does turn out to be different!

Her website is blacked out ohmy.gif

Apparently an insider has said that Doja Cat, The Weeknd and Ty Dolla $ign are features.

Finally, Ariana liked a tweet that said "like if there's more than 12 tracks"

Posted by: Juan Carlos Oct 17 2020, 07:37 PM

Confirmed by an insider that the lead single will be out next week (October 23) and the album a week after that (October 30).

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Oct 17 2020, 08:57 PM

What a kinky title! kink.gif

I hope she delivers something good, I know she's more than capable.

Posted by: LewisGT Oct 17 2020, 09:00 PM

I'm so excited to hear this. Positions is a really intriguing name.

A Doja feature would be great, meh @ Ty though.

Posted by: Blade Oct 17 2020, 09:10 PM

Yeah I'm fascinated by the name too!

I guess 'Dangerous Woman' was quite promiscuous with a lot of its themes and that is by far my favourite of hers so colour me intrigued x

Btw The Weeknd shared Ari's post on his instagram so that collab seems very real cheeseblock.png can't wait, they've both had such a career journey since 'Love Me Harder'!

Posted by: jlj Oct 23 2020, 12:10 PM

Now we’ve heard the lead I wonder how representative that is of the whole albums sound.

Ariana is such an albums track queen for me that sweetener aside my faves usually never become singles.

I really like the album cover kink.gif

Posted by: jlj Oct 23 2020, 10:24 PM

I like the album cover but it’s the filter I’m not sold on. It looks like a low quality image at the minute I’ll need to get a high quality one for my devices. I do quite like it though. I wasn’t keen on the artwork for thank u, next so it’s a step up from that at least. I like that her eyes are open too. It’s so different for her actually. She’s facing the camera, eyes open and non upside down. We’re winning!

Posted by: Liam.k. Oct 24 2020, 06:32 AM

I saw that image earlier but not for a second did I think it was the album cover. Just awful.

As much as Ariana can be one of the most exciting popstars, she's can also be one of the most frustrating.

Posted by: kye Oct 24 2020, 07:24 AM

if the physical cover was iridescent i could go along with the cover she chose

Posted by: Cremey Oct 24 2020, 08:37 AM

Disappointing album cover when the single cover is so strong.
A shame they didn’t even use the distorted Positions typography, love that.

Soooooo excited for The Weeknd collab!! wub.gif

Posted by: jlj Oct 24 2020, 09:25 PM

it’s likely to early to tell yet but off song titles / the tracklist I feel like 34 + 35 and off the table with The Weeknd could be her two other tracks that chart here in the UK on release week under the three track rule.

Posted by: Blade Oct 24 2020, 09:58 PM

Some words from Ariana about the album:

Posted by: jlj Oct 26 2020, 05:31 PM

Intrigued at the negative reception.

I loved Sweetener so I might be a fan if it’s like that era! I’m guessing the negative reception is from people who were fans of My Everything / Dangerous Woman era Ari.

No interest in the leaks at all. Just going to avoid them like the plague. Not too worried about any negative reactions yet.

I wish it was Friday already

Seeing 'nasty', 'pov', 'my hair' and the collabs picked out as highlights a lot

Posted by: Hallo'Riheen Oct 26 2020, 07:40 PM

Okay first listen RATE

Shut Up - pleasant, but doesn't really go anywhere until the very end of the song. I like her vocal runs. It reminds me of 'Successful' a lil bit. Some songs are...made to be intros/50 seconds x (5/10)

34+35 - sis really came to serve these pumpkin spice latte sweetener-esque vibes didn't she. I also had a pumpkin latte on my way home from school which was nice, factz. f*** me till the daylight Mary.png I like the light trap instrumental, but again I'm near the end of my second play of the song and I'm not feeling much. Okay I'm lightly bopping now but I wish it would hit harder. (7/10)

Motive - Finally a great track, the airy house is very Ariana but genuinely something different. I only wish she we got some Ari ad-libs in the pre-chorus. The instrumental blends with Doja's part well. I love this, bring ittt (9/10)

Just like magic - 17 seconds in and oooooo00oh the production has hiT me wub.gif I haven't seen much love for this though, feel like it's gonna be the 'borderline' or 'in my head' of the album, the track that the fanbase isn't fussed about but I love laugh.gif The production is slightly like In My Head as well (8/10)

These songs are all so short, they feel over before they've got going sad.gif

Off The Table - the production sounds fancy if that makes sense :') song not doing much ngl. Kind of boring, but I can see it growing cos that production is well done for sure (5.5/10)

Six Thirty - Sounds like one of the dreamy middle 8s from Sweetener but a whole song of it oop. Again it's very pleasant but nothing really hooking, it's a song I've heard before from her. (5/10)

Safety Net - It fits in with the general vibe of the album but the production is more compelling, it gets GOOD when Ty comes in and progresses from there. Great track, it has so much more to it than Six Thirty/Shut Up even though it fits on a cohesive record with them. (8.5/10)

My Hair - the classic Mariah vibe is real! cheeseblock.png Omg there's a saxophone. This is Yours Truly 2020 version and I'm liking it! I'm so glad people are loving this one, vocally it's more dynamic and exciting than anything she's released in a long time. WHISTLE NOTE ALERT. It really is a 2020 upgrade of Yours Truly, it's so slinky & joyful I can't wub.gif (10/10)

Nasty - A song by Ari with the title 'Nasty' has to be a pure pop bop sorry, ik she should release what makes her happy but give us something pop, the basic white gays are greedy. (7.5/10)

West Side - This isn't gonna be a popular track lol but I'm enjoying it, the moodiness in the production is great. It does pass me by a bit though (6.5/10)

Love Language - I can hear being in a musical. It's a nice change of tone, the production is bright and breezy af. It would've worked better after Six Thirty rather than West Side though. Tbh, as nice as this is it does fly past without much impact, like West Side. (7/10)

Positions - Not my fave by any means but it still sounds so fresh and catchy, and listening to the album I can see why it was the lead single. (9/10)

Ranking
1. My Hair
2. Motive (feat. Doja Cat)
3. Positions
4. Safety Net (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)
5. Just Like Me
6. Nasty
7. 34+35
8. Love Language
9. West Side
10. Off The Table
11. Six Thirty
12. Shut Up

The top 5 are my highlights, but being blunt on any of her other post Yours-Truly albums they'd be in the middle-low rank bar the top 3. Absolutely everything could grow though. I can really see myself having this on repeat on winter. It has a similar vibe to Sweetener, just without your No Tears or Gods to break things up a bit. On one hand I appreciate that as she's given us a consistent album but would I have loved some pop? Absolutely, said Gia Gunn. Ariana has always had pure pop tracks that still fit in with the R&B vibe of her albums (Into You, Greedy, No Tears, Breathin', Bloodline, Bad Idea never felt out of place imo) but this doesn't so it's a little samey.

My biggest problem with the album is the amount of songs that passed by and I was like 'is that it?' I know it's the in-thing to have short songs, to get that streaming coin but the majority of the album being under 3 minutes gives the tracks no time to breathe, and the likes of 'Six Thirty' and 'Shut Up' arrive at one place and stay there for the (short) duration of the track. Like...the project feels rushed. All her other albums had a point to them if that makes sense, I'm not sure what that is here. And that's fair enough I guess, there doesn't NEED to be a big message but it adds to the feeling this is lil rushed.

When it comes to the singing, I have no real complaints. My Hair has to go down as one of the vocals of her career wub.gif I love Ari's voice so much that she has no songs that are outright unpleasant, I do think her diction..isn't her best on this album though at times.

I must sound like such a hater lol but I do like the album, and the top 8 tracks I'd say are good. The pumpkin-spice latte feel is real and I'm gonna have this on repeat in the winter. It was November/December 2018 and a time where I kind of isolated myself and become very lonely for a short time (that's passed now thankfully) and Sweetener and all its dreaminess helped me, it's so winter. This will grow for absolute sure.

Posted by: JulianNial Oct 26 2020, 07:44 PM

Oh dear the proper Pop crazy cravers are going to hate this album, it's her most R&B so far.

'positions' was the correct choice for first single, for me it's still the best song but others could grow.

I think I'd like for 'nasty' to be next single, another one that's very to my taste.

'motive' is the my 2nd choice for next single.

'34+35' is probably the catchiest song, so I could see it taking off, but radios won't love it for reasons that will be obvious. laugh.gif

Wow at POV ending the album. Vocals!

Posted by: *Calluminati Oct 26 2020, 07:58 PM

I couldn’t resist listening to this and all I can say is that it is extremely cohesive and is perhaps her most authentic album yet. But there aren’t many peaks and valleys, it’s very much music that you could have on in the background and enjoy lightly.

In summation: a well-produced, chilled and smooth latte of an R&B record. Pop who?

Posted by: HeadlessJockey Oct 26 2020, 08:30 PM

3 in the UK Top 10 next week??

Posted by: Hallo'Riheen Oct 26 2020, 08:48 PM

Oops my leak must not have Obvious or POV on it :’)

Posted by: Jαsє Oct 26 2020, 09:11 PM

I'm listening to the album and the majority of the songs I don't feel go anywhere sad.gif

Posted by: Hallo'Riheen Oct 26 2020, 09:55 PM

Revised ranking after hearing the last two tracks:
1. My Hair (10/10)
2. Motive (feat. Doja Cat) (9/10)
3. Positions (9/10)
4. Safety Net (feat. Ty Dolla $ign) (8.5/10)
5. POV (8/10)
6. Obvious (8/10)
7. Just Like Me (8/10)
8. Nasty (7.5/10)
9. 34+35 (7/10)
10. Love Language (7/10)
11. West Side (6.5/10)
12. Off The Table (5.5/10)
13. Six Thirty (5/10)
14. Shut Up (5/10)

POV is the 'Pete Davidson' follow up I've been needing wub.gif And it's a full song! Obvious is fab as well. Really boosts the overall quality of the album. Yeah, it's her weakest based on my two listens but it's not bad at all.

Posted by: ɥɔʇᴉʍ Oct 26 2020, 10:21 PM

i usually don't care about leaks but i am listening now because i was bored. i will definitely be playing it a lot on Spotify when it comes out.

N A S T Y ! ! ! that production. this is what i imagine a contemporary Mariah song to sound like! it would suit her SO well.

'pov' is really the MVP here. the strings, the vocals. incredible closer and I have GOOSEBUMPS.

This whole thing will sound SO much better in good quality and not crappy mp3 rips so one half-arsed listen is more than enough.

funny to see negativity. I think it's her most cohesive and interesting album to-date!

Posted by: jlj Oct 26 2020, 10:36 PM

I really want to hear this!!!!

I’ll definitely buy it regardless because I am such an Ariana stan but the reviews for this are really sending me back to sweetener time and that ended up being my fave by her.

Posted by: kye Oct 26 2020, 11:37 PM

i genuinely thought there'd been a problem with my download when i saw these track lengths but nope - they're actually this short.

Posted by: Liаm Oct 27 2020, 12:40 AM

This album just... Is not really it sad.gif

I wouldn't say it's bad by any means, but I find it really a lot of it very samey. It's not even that it's not what I want from her, I like R&B Ari but a lot of the tracks don't go anywhere, aren't memorable and I'm not really pushed to want to hear them again.

Motive, POV, Nasty and My Hair are my faves but I can't see anything becoming an Ari fave of mine at all.

Posted by: Juan Carlos Oct 27 2020, 04:09 AM

Three (slightly) different versions of the physical albums are available to pre-order on her website.

Posted by: Liam.k. Oct 27 2020, 06:51 AM

Could we not just have... one great cover?

Posted by: Blade Oct 27 2020, 08:40 AM

tearsmile.gif I do prefer the shots in the new versions but yeah it's all very samey laugh.gif Payday today so I think I'll get one of the alternative covers later and maybe a glitter cassette as well. No sign of a vinyl yet but hearing whispers about an Urban Outfitters one coming soon. I still haven't even received my 'Stuck With U' vinyl so probably for the best for those to be handled elsewhere tongue.gif (I know it's a wider issue but her merch team don't have the best track record anyway)

Posted by: jlj Oct 27 2020, 11:10 AM

I’m really tempted to get the 3 of them but it’s a bad week for ££ money wise!

I might just end up buying the physical from HMV next week when I’ll more than likely get Little Mix as well.

I don’t so much mind the actual cover tbh I think it’s a really nice photo and she’s definitely had worse artwork!

Good tactic having cassettes alongside the CD though as that’ll mean two sales won’t it and then four sales if you get everything like all the covers and a cassette? I’m glad she’s put one up she should get some pre order sales now what will count to release week.

Posted by: jlj Oct 27 2020, 03:14 PM

Just seen you can get the album off HMV so I’ve pre ordered it from there rather than from her store wub.gif

Posted by: Hallo'Riheen Oct 27 2020, 03:56 PM

Pre-ordered the glitter cassette!

Posted by: Blade Oct 27 2020, 05:27 PM

I ended up getting positions 'exclusive cd two' and the glitter cassette! Also treated myself to the 'heaven sent you to me' t-shirt as I really like the picture on the back of it. So that takes the merch up to four items with the 'positions' CD single too! It's so great to be able to get all of this on the U.K. store rather than having extortionate shipping costs *.*

Posted by: Jay* Oct 27 2020, 06:36 PM

I bought "Exclusive cd cover one" (the one without her hands showing) and the white cassette (I already have silver glitter cassettes by Kylie and Louise, so I wanted something different on this occasion heehee.gif )

Hi everyone, new here smile.gif Was looking for a place to talk about the album that wasn’t scary because, you know what twitters like!

I’ve listened to the album and am a bit disappointed. I didn’t think it would be like TUN, but I thought it would have a catchy rnb 90ss vibe from the lead single (which I love).

I won’t do a track by track mainly because I can’t remember what some of them sound like.

But I agree with the poster who said my hair is a vocal career highlight, the lyrics aren’t great but wow she suits that croony style so much and you can understand exactly what she’s saying - yey!

There are other songs I like the sound of a lot like 34 35, obvious, love language. But my main issue is the lyrics don’t elevate the music at all. Eg “are you down what’s up” x100. I don’t expect every pop star to be able to write like a poet but Ariana has the best voice in the game IMO and it’s used with basic and sometimes cringey lyrics.

Overall the album sounds like she was vibing in the studio through quarantine and scooter told her it was good enough to release as a whole album.

Hope this doesn’t come across as hate btw. I just think she needs new collaborators.

'34+35' has been added to the Capital playlist alongside 'positions' btw ohmy.gif

Just two more days of waiting to hear this now *.*

Posted by: jlj Oct 28 2020, 12:07 AM

Interesting! I did think off titles alone that 34 + 35 would be a big streamer on release week. But If it’s on a capital playlist we could see it on streaming ones too. There was a rumour she’d filmed two music videos too maybe the other one was for that.

I’m dying to hear this! I have a link for it but I’ve not yet brought myself to hear it so I think I’ll actually wait until Friday now. Is it another 5am release?

Posted by: JulianNial Oct 28 2020, 08:33 AM

Im imagining 34 + 35 will be a natural hit, I can imagine it being quite big on Tik tok.

Posted by: dannjohn Oct 28 2020, 10:32 AM

I think the Doja Cat track will be quite popular... I mean as theres no touring allowed and we saw that Ariana gives up her albums on release week... I can't imagine much going forward for this one.

Posted by: jlj Oct 28 2020, 10:50 AM

Interestingly, I was actually potentially thinking the opposite for this album and that the campaign would last longer post album release because of how quick the time span was from the album announcement, lead single drop and then the album itself.

Posted by: jlj Oct 28 2020, 12:27 PM

The Sun have given the album 4 stars (out of 5) quite a positive review from them.

She’s on the cover today with a two page spread talking about the album and her journey over the last few years.

One day to go cheeseblock.png

Posted by: LewisGT Oct 29 2020, 05:48 PM

I ordered all the versions yesterday.

I can't believe this time tomorrow I would have already listened to this multiple times. Seriously considering staying up to 4am like I did for Sweetener seeming that I'm off tomorrow but I'm not sure I'd actually be able to stay awake for that long anymore.

Posted by: jlj Oct 29 2020, 07:34 PM

My physical album copy from HMV has been dispatched! So happy it’s gonna arrive as soon as that. I was thinking the physicals would arrive later than release week.

I’ve managed to avoid the album despite having a link to the leak! My first listen of this will feel so special heart.gif

My 'positions' single has dispatched from her store but not the album yet laugh.gif hopefully soon!

Have also completely avoided the leak! So glad I'm still working from home so I can listen to it in the background all day tomorrow heart.gif

That’ll make your working day go by that bit faster then wub.gif

I’m so excited now! I just don’t know how I’ll sleep tonight. I wish it was a midnight release but I’ll just wake up earlier than usual to have a full listen to it.

Posted by: Hallo'Riheen Oct 29 2020, 10:03 PM

So I'm listening again and everything is making much more of an impression second time round. Don't think it'll ever get in the holy trinity of DW>Sweetener>TU,N but I'm loving the vibe of the album.

Y'know Motive sounds so good in HQ!

Posted by: Fallin' Folklore Oct 30 2020, 04:43 AM

08 shut up - I really like the production
08.5 34+35 - this BOPS
08 motive - this also bops
06 just like magic - this felt a bit filler-y, would probs be bottom 3 on TUN for me
07 off the table - their voices work really well together but it's a bit dull. the bridge is cute
06 six thirty - exact same as my JLM comment
06.5 safety net - yh it's fine
08 my hair - I really like the vibe of this one
07.5 nasty - it's good, idk if I'll go back to it much tho
04 west side - filler, dull, the production is really irritating as well, skip
08.5 love language - this bops, it's clicking with me, it standouts a bit as well. omg the last 15 seconds, that switchup came out of nowhere I thought it was a new song
08.5 positions - not her strongest lead single but it bops
07 obvious - it's fine, don't think I'll return to it much
08 pov - nice closer & cute track

tbh I went in with low expectations, especially considering the reactions from most people ik with similar taste to me that listened to the leak, so I'm pleasantly surprised & glad there's a few tracks I'll at least be returning too. In terms of Ari albums, DW remains a very strong #1, followed by TUN & ME. I'd say I'd place this 4th, I'm glad the lowlights on this track are just dull rather than outright bad like a certain one of her other albums.

Posted by: Blade Oct 30 2020, 08:02 AM

Just quickly paused my first listen of the album to say that ‘safety net’ is GORGEOUS! Swoon wub.gif

Posted by: GhoulOdyssey Oct 30 2020, 08:30 AM

Actually looking forward to listening sometime this week! On paper this doesn't sound like my thing at all laugh.gif but I've really liked the lead single (though probably isn't a top Ariana fave of mine just yet), and I had a flick through this morning to catch the vibe and it's sounding really good!

Posted by: MrAndrewMan Oct 30 2020, 09:04 AM

Just finished my first listen and overall it's a pretty good album! Exceeded my expectations after seeing a lot of mixed/negative reception.

Not going to lie when I was listening to the first half I was beginning to get worried as most of the tracks weren't really grabbing me, but for me the quality definitely got a lot better from Safety Net onwards.

My favourites are 34+35, love language, safety net and pov. I think others will definitely grow with more listens though. wub.gif

Posted by: ɥɔʇᴉʍ Oct 30 2020, 09:05 AM

I never got 34+35 until I heard her explain it at the end lmao how embarrassing is it I have a degree in MATHS ;_;

Posted by: Blade Oct 30 2020, 09:43 AM

Based on names alone I was expecting my preference of the collaborations to be 01. The Weeknd 02. Doja Cat 03. Ty Dolla $ign but turns out it's the exact opposite of that laugh.gif I like all of them but feel totally enamoured by 'safety net' right now - perhaps a career highlight for me already drama.gif I'm going to listen to the album a few more times before doing a full ranking but so far I'm pleased with it. My main issues with 'My Everything' and 'Sweetener' is that, highs aside, they felt like musical whiplash - but this record is so cohesive and smooth. I think 'positions' could end up being my 3rd favourite Ariana album behind 'Dangerous Woman' and 'thank u, next'. Too early to properly determine that but signs are pointing that way.

The Spotify support for this is looking incredible btw! Hopefully another #1 album for her.

Posted by: LewisGT Oct 30 2020, 10:08 AM

I really liked it. I don't feel the absolute need to put it straight back on repeat like I have done with the rest of her albums but it still sounded so lush and she killed the vocals as ever. I don't think this is ever going to be one of my favourite albums but I'm sure it's going to grow on me loads.

Here is my rankings after my first listen

1. positions
2. 34+35
3. nasty
4. love language
5. safety net
6. west side
7. off the table
8. obvious
9. motivate
10. pov
11. my hair
12. just like magic
13. six thirty
14. shut up

Posted by: ɥɔʇᴉʍ Oct 30 2020, 10:09 AM

safety net is definitely the highlight of the record for me as well. Ty is sounding amazing and the production is spot on.

I am enjoying this album SO much, it's properly to my taste!

Currently streaming 'My Hair' and... WOW.

Posted by: Blade Oct 30 2020, 10:49 AM

okay full ranking right now looks a little something like this:

01. safety net (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)
02. love language
03. positions
04. pov
05. motive (with Doja Cat)

06. nasty
07. my hair
08. just like magic
09. west side
10. off the table (feat. The Weeknd)

11. shut up
12. 34+35
13. obvious
14. six thirty

This record is gorgeous and feels like it's only going to grow more and more. I'm so relieved after the mixed reception to the leaks.

Ok I’m going in now on my first full listen!

Posted by: MrAndrewMan Oct 30 2020, 11:05 AM

After two listens this is my current ranking!

1. pov
2. safety net (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)
These two are pretty much equal I love them both so much! wub.gif

3. 34+35
4. positions
5. love language
6. my hair
7. just like magic (think this is the biggest grower so far for me!)

8. obvious
9. off the table feat. The Weeknd (another grower)
10. west side
11. shut up
12. nasty

13. six thirty
14. motive feat. Doja Cat (don’t know why but this one just isn’t clicking with me at the moment)

Overall I'd probably say this is 4th in terms of Ariana's albums for me after Dangerous Woman, thank u next and Sweetener.

Posted by: Blade Oct 30 2020, 11:38 AM

Her vocals are on fire. The whistle notes extending to entire sentences during 'my hair' cheeseblock.png

I wish I'd booked the day off work as I'm really struggling to concentrate laugh.gif

Posted by: JulianNial Oct 30 2020, 11:51 AM

I think I put this as my 3rd favourite album of hers behind Dangerous Woman and thank u, next.

It's very consistent.
1. positions
2. nasty
3. my hair
4. 34+35
5. safety net (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)
6. love language
7. pov
8. motive (with Doja Cat)
9. just like magic
10. west side
11. obvious
12. six thirty
13. off the table (feat. The Weeknd)
14. shut up

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Oct 30 2020, 11:57 AM

I actually think as an album this is better than the last two! I enjoyed the first 4 tracks, then found 'Off The Table' and 'Six Thirty' tedious listens (although I liked the way The Weeknd referenced 'Love Me Harder' in the former)

'My Hair' is the absolute highlight! It has flourishes of what I loved about the Dangerous Woman album so much, and those whistle notes. wub.gif 'Love Language' is a brilliant instrumental which I feel has kinda gone to waste a bit here.

Posted by: RobBot Oct 30 2020, 12:01 PM

6/10 Shut Up
6.5/10 34+35
7.5/10 Motive
6.5/10 Just Like Magic
5.5/10 Off The Table
5/10 Six Thirty
7.5/10 Safety Net
7.5/10 My Hair
6.5/10 Nasty
4/10 West Side
7/10 Love Language
8.5/10 Positions
7/10 Obvious
8.5/10 POV
= 6.7/10

01 POV
02 Positions
03 My Hair
04 Motive
05 Safety Net
06 Love Language
07 Obvious
08 Just Like Magic
09 34+35
10 Nasty
11 Shut Up
12 Off The Table
13 Six Thirty
14 West Side

I will not dull this thread with negativity for much longer than this quick post but I really will only be taking away the top 6 with any interest. So much of it just seemed to roll into one without much hook, but POV was a superb ending to actually let her vocals shine (My Hair also, those whistle LINES, get it girl). It's not a total pass but I am disappointed.

Posted by: jlj Oct 30 2020, 12:02 PM

This is her most cohesive album to date! Like every track flows so well from the next one so well. I don’t at all get the Bieber comparisons this really is like a full body of work it’s possibly her least pop album to date but I’m not too bothered by that. I was nervous at the reviews but it’s a really strong album now I’ve heard it wub.gif

My first listen highlights were safety net, my hair and pov but overall the theme / vibe of this is strong.

Posted by: Wall Oct 30 2020, 12:12 PM

As expected what a huge disappointment

Posted by: Blade Oct 30 2020, 12:29 PM

Does anyone know if she worked with Tinashe on 'west side'? It's reminding me so much of her music in places!

Just Like Magic is so lush wub.gif Mess at me (+ others) thinking it was 'middle finger to my bum' and not 'thumb' Selena.png I think I'm gonna love this album oop, as mentioned not as much as her last three but that is a BAR.

Posted by: Blade Oct 30 2020, 12:37 PM

‘just like magic’ is so pretty lyrically <3 that manifestation anthem!

Posted by: Slick Oct 30 2020, 12:51 PM

This is underwhelming on first listen, which is a shame but what I expected after 'positions' was the lead single. I am sure that it will grow on me and I'll be loving it in a few weeks but so far I agree with the comments that there aren't many peaks and valleys. It's just "nice" with no outstanding moments.

Posted by: troylovesmusic Oct 30 2020, 12:55 PM

To me this her most cohesive album everything just flows and fits together nicely . I’m tempted to say it’s one of my favourite albums by her but I’m going to give more listens before I say that . It’s a really strong album though for me !

Posted by: LewisGT Oct 30 2020, 12:59 PM

This has already grew on my loads on second listen. The tracks I originally ranked neat the bottom already sounded so much smoother. wub.gif I have no idea how I’d rank them now laugh.gif

Does anyone know if she worked with Tinashe on 'west side'? It's reminding me so much of her music in places!
She's not listed on the credits on Spotify. So I imagine it was just inspiration at most!

Listening through now for the first time and 'positions' really set me up for exactly what I expected (first listen rate incoming)

Posted by: jlj Oct 30 2020, 01:18 PM

I really don’t know id rate this yet! But it’s really strong as a whole album. It’s cohesive and there’s nothing on here what I’d say I disliked.

I thought my first listen of this might’ve been like when I first heard ANTI by Rihanna and I wasn’t keen but over time it all fell into place and grew after repeated listens. This was pretty instant for me all the way through. I read to much into the reviews which tbh I shouldn’t have took notice of as the Ariana this site stans isn’t necessarily what I like the most from her laugh.gif you can tell that this was recorded with the intention of making an album than just putting out singles as well.

I’m impressed. I’d say the second half of the album (like from safety net onwards) is where it really excels though it kinda gets better as it goes on. pov is gorgeous wub.gif wub.gif the songs being short is my only nag like a few songs on here would’ve sounded even better with like an extra chorus or verse or so but and if you want them to be longer then it must mean that the songs themselves are strong it’s better than having an album full of 5/6 minute long songs where they all drag.

Yeah I’m happy! I can kinda see why pop Ariana lovers might not be as sold on this but i’m liking this natural like sound it has to it. I’ll do a ranking at some point on Sunday / Monday when the tracks become more familiar. On a final note I think positions the song sounds way better in context of the album. I can definitely now see why it as chosen as the lead single.

First listen through:

06.5 shut up
06.5 34+35
07.5 Motive
06.0 Just Like Magic
07.0 Off The Table
06.5 Six Thirty
07.5 Safety Net
07.0 My Hair
06.0 Nasty
06.0 West Side
07.5 Love Language
07.0 Positions
06.0 Obvious
08.5 POV

It's a nice album, but that's it for me, too. sad.gif I will definitely listen to it all again a few times to get an overall opinion on it, but for me, it's like she's said "imma take 'sweetener', remove all the highlights/fan favourites from that album, and make a load more 'Pete Davison' type full length tracks instead". I have to try and find motivation to actually want to bother listening to it again, though. </3

POV is gorgeous! A beautiful closer. Hopefully some growers (I feel the same about 'positions' now as I did when I first heard it - after expecting it to grow a little) so we shall see!

I can't decide whether it's "cohesive" or just "samey". I was thinking the songs seemed short when looking at the track lengths, but thankfully if they were any longer, this album would have dragged a lot more.

Posted by: Hallo'Riheen Oct 30 2020, 01:45 PM

The only one I'm not feeling at all is "Off The Table", which just goes nowhere and doesn't hold a candle to their last collab sad.gif Otherwise I'm a fan.

I am officially OBSESSED with safety net! What kinda 11/10 SONG heart.gif

Posted by: Neil Oct 30 2020, 02:33 PM

It's certainly a very cohesive album, which normally is a big plus for me, but in this instance it all pretty much sounds like one long song. And that song, isn't very good.

Only the title track really stands out to me after first listen. A lot of people were saying that song sounds like "Ariana Grande on autopilot" which I really disagreed with, but funnily enough that's exactly how I would describe the rest of the album lol.

Posted by: Dexter Oct 30 2020, 03:22 PM

Kinda echoing a lot of what others have said..

Nothing is bad by any means but I've just listened through the album and I could honestly not tell you which song was which if you asked (aside the title track obviously)

Posted by: Liam.k. Oct 30 2020, 03:41 PM

It's going to take a few more listens to be able to properly distinguish the tracks from one another, but I think the album is lot better than I was expecting it to be. You can see why 'positions' was chosen as the lead single, but it did give the impression that it would be very Ariana-on-autopilot, yet the album is very classic, Mariah-esque R&B, as if this was the album Ariana always wanted to make.

Posted by: Blond 2.0 Oct 30 2020, 04:15 PM

The album is amazing her most R&B album

Posted by: No Sleeep Oct 30 2020, 04:15 PM

This isn’t the kinda R&B I like, this is 2010s hipster alternative R&B. I’d be hoping for an album more like Chloe x Halle’s Ungodly Hour if I had to choose a recent R&B album. Mariah’s albums were much more diverse. Ariana is basically the female Drake lol

There are very few positives about this album... west side is good for the Aaliyah sample and the vocals are very Brandy-inspired, positions is better now I know it’s the only moderately uptempo song on the album, pov is alright but the ventilator noises are a turn-off and lyrically it could be better

I wouldn’t say this was alternative Rnb tbh . Alternative Rnb is people like Solange , FKA Twigs SZA etc.

Yeah this felt quite classic R&B to me, obviously with Ariana’s own stamp on it.

I'm slowly becoming a 'my hair' stan - can't believe that was only 7th in my rank earlier! It's at least 4th now <3

Posted by: LMLou Oct 30 2020, 09:50 PM

Went into my first listen with prettylow expectations because of the description of the album and it certain exceeded them. Overall the album is very nice and cohesive and in some parts pretty great. I think she succeed in what she set out to do - it just isn't exactly my cup of tea in style. I'm sure in 2 or 3 albums time she'll loop back around to some pop bops even if she seems quite far from it just now. The only song that felt like a complete flop for me was west side, its just such a non event of anything. The more sultry R&B ones tended to be my fave (with the exception of off the table, its not Love Me Harder :/) Overall, definitely a pleasant surprise for me

1) my hair
2) 34+35

4) motive
5) pov
6) nasty

It’s really not an alternative Rnb Album lol . This is pretty much a standard commercial Rnb album with an Ariana twist and flavour to it and also Rnb classic influences . Summer Walker and Tinashe both fall under classic Rnb with Tinashe sometimes doing alternative Rnb and also commercial Rnb as well while Summer does Soul Rnb also . If you listen to Solange/FKA Twigs/SZA there perfect examples of alternative Rnb .

Classic R&B to me is Brandy, Mary J Blige, Beyoncé, Mariah... VOCALS. Tinashe, Kehlani, Jhené Aiko and Summer Walker do not bring vocals. Ariana’s vocals are great obviously but they’re not the focal point of the album... she sounds so disinterested and talk sings most of the album. Modern “R&B” is basically indistinguishable from hip hop. R&B doesn’t even really exist anymore. Well there’s Toni and Tamar... Ariana didn’t release anything like their material. R&B doesn’t just mean slow and talk-singing about pussy lol.

safety net, pov, nasty and 34+35 are where it’s at heart.gif

Completely agree with the Tinashe comparisons – west side especially but I could see her doing quite a few of these which is probably why I’m liking it so much

I get those sort of vibes from it too, a really lovely warming track! heart.gif

I've had to listen to the album a few times now because the first couple of listens everything just kind of blended into one and it lost my attention, but I've given it a couple more listens and am starting to establish which songs are which and what ones I'll go back to etc. It's far from my favourite album by Ariana, but it's alright. If we were to do a listening party for this album when would everyone be free?

Posted by: Blade Oct 31 2020, 08:16 PM

Maybe Thursday or something as an event to look forward to during the impending lockdown?

Btw does anyone know if they're selling this in HMV? My mum went to Tesco earlier and said they were stocking new Sam Smith but she couldn't see this!

I pre ordered a copy from HMV and it’s been dispatched but it hasn’t arrived yet.

For what it’s worth she is #1 on iTunes albums so maybe she may sell quite a few digital copies this week the way Taylor would’ve done with folklore.

I guess my 'positions' CD single wasn't dispatched until Thursday so fingers crossed for it to still happen before the tracking week is over!

Posted by: jlj Oct 31 2020, 09:12 PM

We should have a iTunes Store buying party! I’m tempted at getting one I think i will on Monday once I’ve seen how close the midweeks are.

Sams main strength is that the fanbase they have are physical buyers but that’s pretty much a downside at this current time because HMV likely is closing isn’t it so it’s how much online copies they can sell and digital copies.

Arianas a huge streaming figure which basically is like the charts right now but she does also do well on physical sales on albums but not as big as Sam I’d imagine. I’m optimistic that she’s got it though! She’ll be getting some strong streams this week.

A winter 'pov' release with an awards show performance for Ariana's vocals to shine is a huge fantasy for me with this era 😍

Posted by: gooddelta Nov 2 2020, 11:20 AM

I'm quite happy with the album, it reminds me of mid/late-90s Mariah in places and I've always had a soft spot for classic laidback R&B. I bought it in Asda on Friday, so it is stocked there at least!

My initial top five is:

1. pov
2. my hair
3. love language
4. safety net
5. positions

But I also like 34+35, shut up, six thirty and motive. A couple of the others have washed over me on the first couple of listens, but on the whole I'm much more pleased with it than I expected!

Posted by: jlj Nov 2 2020, 11:23 AM

My CD of the album arrived today wub.gif

She’s now at #2 on iTunes albums with Sam overtaking her after last nights Strictly results show performance.

Wonder what the midweeks are like today for the albums chart.

From the chart eligible songs - 'positions' remains at #1 on Spotify, '34+35' climbs to #6, 'motive' remains at #13.

'pov' overtakes 'off the table' as the 4th most popular song wub.gif

Any updates on sales in the UK so far?

Posted by: Brightest Blue Nov 2 2020, 03:52 PM

This album is such a grower. I liked it from first listen, but I now think that it’s a really strong album. The tracks are now all starting to stand out, which helps.

Motive and Safety Net HAVE to be singles at some point! I really like Nasty too, that could work with an added feature perhaps?

Posted by: Jade Nov 2 2020, 04:55 PM

#1 in the mids - a closer gap between her and Sam than I was expecting, but streaming should be in her favour as the week progresses and copies from her store still need to be added, think she will definitely achieve it. Looks like Cliff wasn't too much of a threat either laugh.gif

'positions' single #1, 34+35 #8, motive #13

Posted by: jlj Nov 2 2020, 04:58 PM

I thought she’d have been on 20k or so at this point in the week.

Hopefully there’s a large amount of sales to be added what have come from her store and she will add a lot off streams too. But yeah I was expecting more hopefully the gap between her and Sam gets bigger with her out in front. Actually quite nervous now!

Posted by: LewisGT Nov 2 2020, 05:16 PM

I was expecting Sam to be ahead in this update so I think the gap will get bigger as the week goes on now. Especially if the store sales get added soon.

It’s been discussed in the Friday predictions thread that Ariana outsold Sam yesterday so that’s good news!

Sam overtook her on iTunes yesterday though but that was after a Strictly performance so to be expected I guess.

I wonder how much will get added from her store! What a relief she chose this week though she’d have been #2 last week and if she chose next week she’d have ended up at #3 so this was the best week for her in terms of a UK #1 album.

Posted by: Jay* Nov 2 2020, 07:24 PM

Ariana is likely to have a significant lead over Sam by Friday! Ariana’s streaming sales are 4x the amount of Sam’s, that massively goes in her favour. As mentioned, her Official Store physicals aren’t included in the mids yet either. She’s got this!

So I just gave this another full listen. I’d say this is my first ranking of the tracks.

I think across her discography this will likely rank as her 4th best overall for me. It’s definitely stronger than her first two albums.

Sweetener, thank u, next and Dangerous Woman (in that order) I’d say are likely to remain ahead of it though. But this is a strong album and it’s the most cohesive album she’s done. It’s got a real chill vibe to it though and she sounds so good on it. It’s definitely a grower I wasn’t underwhelmed by any means but it’s clicking further with repeated listens.

I’ve said this before but in general the second half of the album is a lot stronger than the first half.

Not commented fully on this yet but I am slowly but surely getting more and more into it. Being a big fan of 'Sweetener', I can see comparisons to that and it's welcomed, although the difference is the hooks on this aren't as grabbing as that album's for me.

Overall, I like the album and it is growing with each listen.

'pov' is my favourite I think, what an absolute beauty. Also really liking '34+35', 'off the table', and the title track - the others will take time but will likely get me eventually.

It's a nice listen, though it does feel like it's over before it's fully got started as an album, but a piece it's cohesive and solid and i'm liking it.

positions, 34+35 and motive are all stable on Spotify at #1, #6 and #13 again!

Still no email from her store yet about the CD and cassette dispatching. Intrigued to see the next mids figure.

5 Bring Me the Horizon - POST HUMAN: SURVIVAL HORROR (6.2k) *

I wish her lead in the album chart was stronger but still feeling cautiously optimistic about her doing the chart double, with her streaming strength and lack of Spotify data. Her store seriously needs to get a move on with the physicals - it's so frustrating having no idea how many copies are actually missing from the total laugh.gif

We'll try and help her out a little bit with a streaming party, so watch out for more info soon happy.gif

So Sam added slightly more yesterday to their total but Ariana has a days worth of streams missing (where apparently she’s doing 4x what Sam is doing) and her own stores sales still to come.

Hopefully she’ll do it. I wonder if Thursday will be her biggest day!

I was under the impression that nothing was being reported from her store yet but Jay posted a break-down of today's figure and that included over 1000 cassettes? Surely they must be from her store? thinking.gif could it be that some people are receiving theirs but not others? definitely no word at all on my cassette or CD yet!

I got an email 10 mins ago telling me my order had been dispatched cheer.gif

Posted by: Jade Nov 5 2020, 12:17 AM

Yay! cheer.gif

I've just realised that the t-shirt I ordered along with the CD and cassette doesn't ship until December so I might have accidentally chosen the option that ships them all together at that later time drama.gif so I've decided to order the other two CDs so I can collect all three and actually contribute something much sooner than that laugh.gif

Posted by: Andrew. Nov 5 2020, 12:34 AM

My cassette's just been dispatched as well!

'West Side' is incredible...what the f***? The feels. Only 'Off The Table' I'm not liking.

Posted by: LewisGT Nov 5 2020, 10:57 AM

And my order has just arrived.

Hopefully with the orders now being shipped it’s fine enough to clinch the #1.

Posted by: jlj Nov 5 2020, 11:02 AM

Today could be her biggest sales day (or maybes second biggest after the release day) I can definitely see her adding around 10k worth of sales now from her store and yesterday and today’s streams and downloads.

Posted by: Jade Nov 5 2020, 03:14 PM

That would be great! Can't wait to see the final tally.

'positions' (song) is holding on so well at #1 on Spotify - intrigued to see if it could actually stretch its #1 reign to 3+ weeks.

'34+35' now down to #11 (please still scrape top 10 officially!), motive #18 and pov #40

ALBUMS

2 Sam Smith - Love Goes (20.0k) *
3 Cliff Richard - Music... The Air That I Breathe (16.4k) *

She's extended her lead at #1 in both singles and albums again so looks like that chart double could very much be hers heart.gif

'34+35' has dropped a place - fingers crossed that it stays at #9 as she's already had 3 #8 peaks, plus #10, but never #9 here!

I am enjoying this album a lot more than I did on first listen. It is definitely a sound that I don't enjoy as much but there are some good songs on it and it's quite easy to listen to.

Posted by: Jade Nov 6 2020, 01:39 PM

I agree that it's an easy listen. I think the short durations for most of the tracks make me want to hit replay after it's done.

I did expect more but happy to see she’s #1 across both charts!

Her second chart double here too wub.gif

Posted by: Jade Nov 6 2020, 06:26 PM

Disappointed that she didn't break 30k but oh well - she beat off the competition and got that chart double, yay!

All her first weeks:

Yours Truly: 7,164
My Everything: 23,766
Dangerous Woman: 19,582
Sweetener: 44,755
thank u, next: 65,214
positions: 27,472

So lands in at third.

Intrigued to see what the second week drop and general longevity will be like. The lead single is holding up well and hopefully '34+35' will take off in a big way too.

2nd week drops for her #1 albums:

Dangerous Woman: 1-8 (omg her best album done so dirty)
Sweetener: 1-3
thank u, next: 1-1

That's what I'm doing too - it's so easy to listen to all of the tracks instead of cherry-picking.

I am so pleased that she's gone another Top 10 single under her belt and another #1 album this week. A true superstar!

Posted by: jlj Nov 6 2020, 06:30 PM

I think she’ll stay top 5 this week!

Possibly #5. Realistically the absolute highest she’ll be is #3 because Kylie and LM have probably both outsold her first week just today but Giggs and Dutchavelli do well on streams so they may have a good week.

I don’t think she’ll drop any lower than #6 but her strong streams and the fact some physicals are counting for week two could mean she stays at number 3.

Posted by: Andrew. Nov 6 2020, 06:47 PM

What's disappointing is the pure sales, only 9k sad.gif But I guess it's hardly a shock. Hopefully it can serve longevity.

Posted by: Jade Nov 6 2020, 07:05 PM

Yeah I wish those had been stronger. She was at a disadvantage with no pre-orders, vinyl formats or signed items but I was hoping for more of an impact from the late dispatches than that. My last minute extra CD purchases weren't shipped in time so at least I'm contributing to week #2 now laugh.gif

The constant 'Ariana is flopping' energy has been exhausting this week so I'm looking forward to the forum moving on to the next battle and just enjoying the music

Posted by: HausofHitchcock Nov 6 2020, 07:15 PM

So happy it stayed at #1 (I knew it was going to but that first set of midweeks did shock me).

I am not going to lie, those sales are very underwhelming considering what I thought she'd do, but it matters how it holds up now before we make any grand claims of flopping etc. If she can keep her singles out there and keep the album sales afloat this can still turn into a very decent era for her.

I think Jordan compared it to ANTI, and I can see that happening for it sales wise! (hopefully anyway)

That could be a good comparison! I think the album is a mood that the GP will enjoy over winter (resists urge to write an essay on ANTI’s mishandling in the UK kink.gif)

Posted by: jlj Nov 6 2020, 07:26 PM

I did compare it to ANTI! I think its a sort of similar type of situation. They both had lower week one sales than what you’d have expected but ANTis chart run was pretty strong (it had more weeks on the chart than two of Rihanna’s #1 albums too that ended up a peaking at #7 so Ari at least got her #1 here and with slightly more sales too) wub.gif

However they both were announced shortly before the drop (I mean ANTis was a day or so before but still no pre order and lack of physicals in week one) they also both had their fair share of bad reviews at first because of them being both artists least pop sounding albums.

All in all though I think the long run is more important for Ariana this time. This could end up being a real era in terms of post album tracks / singles etc. I definitely think that pov is the album seller though. If she pushes that as a single throughout winter (like early 2021 after 34+35 slows down) I think that could be a real hit for her.

With ANTI too (this may also happen with positions too) the stans ended up beginning to love that album and overtime it gained a cult following. Positions the album is already growing on people the more they hear it so I do think it’ll end up still being a success for her in the long run.

Late/new to the discussion but I honestly don't see her pushing more singles from this... that being said while at first I was underwhelmed by the album I listened to it fully through with my headphones last night and it hit me! It definitely has amazing production and think it's meant to be a cohesive project more than singles as she did in the past. 'POV' as a winter single would be perfection with 'Motive' as the Spring single maybe?

Posted by: Gerald Nov 8 2020, 05:32 PM

A bit late but I have to say that Positions is such a great album. I am glad she finally put a full R&B album. My favourites from the album are; Positions wub.gif wub.gif, Nasty, POV and Motive.

Posted by: Jade Nov 8 2020, 11:07 PM

#1 album in the U.S. too! 'Dangerous Woman' is her only album that has missed #1 there.

Posted by: jlj Nov 8 2020, 11:31 PM

Poor Dangerous Woman!

I remember it being her first #1 here but Drake blocked her over there didn’t he.

Well done to her for getting another #1 album though. That’s 5 of each now isn’t it 5 singles and 5 albums hitting #1 in the US.

Posted by: Jade Nov 8 2020, 11:51 PM

You're right about 'Views' blocking 'Dangerous Woman' sleep.gif at least it got to #1 here! Also, yep an equal 5 #1s on both charts for her in the U.S.! Crazy that 3 of those were achieved just this year. It's way more imbalanced here of course with 7 UK #1 singles and 4 #1 albums. Although I guess she matches albums with totally solo number 1s tongue.gif

"Ariana Grande earns the fastest accumulation of three #1 studio albums on the Billboard 200 for a female artist this century" - bravo to her work ethic and success clap.gif

Not too bad a drop tbh she’s not that far from #3 as well.

Posted by: Jade Nov 9 2020, 04:42 PM

Posted by: Jade Nov 9 2020, 06:42 PM

wub.gif so excited for it to get a play on the chart show - I can actually listen live this week!

'positions' has fallen to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, behind that new remix of 'Mood'. 'Rain On Me' dropped to #5 and 'Stuck With U' #13, so yay for improved stability. '34+35' has debuted at #8 - becoming Ari's 18th U.S. top 10 hit! Not sure what the positions are for the rest of the album tracks yet.

tonight I have, it’s not as bad I thought it was going to be : 34+35, motive & positions are all great tracks.
However, POV really is the star of the show! Hopefully it’ll be a big hit, it’s fantastic. Understated and one of her better songs (although she has many best songs ;-) )

3 Shirley Bassey - I Owe It All to You (6.2k) *

I can't explain how glad I am that it's POV that's organically taking off. It was my IMMEDIATE highlight, such a gorgeous song but it definitely didn't strike me as sounding like a hit so I'm thrilled to be wrong. It's unlike any Ariana song I've ever loved before aswell so if it does become a big hit, it'd be a great way to show a different side of her as an artist to those who only know her singles and have never delved into an album.

'pov' fell a place on Spotify today so a top 25 debut seems like the most realistic outcome! Amazing start, especially for a song that's not even being pushed in the near future, as Ariana seemingly teased a '34+35' video shoot yesterday on social media.

Thursday mids:

Brilliant! Fingers crossed that they have it planned for single #3.

Today it's back up to #18 on Spotify - matching its peak position from when the album first dropped! #21 on Apple Music also.

INCREDIBLE start for 'pov' - just 4 places behind the actual 2nd single! Sounded so gorgeous on the radio too wub.gif

The album indeed fell to #3 this week so the same trajectory as 'sweetener' - definitely respectable clap.gif

Didn't it just!! heart.gif

34+35 held up alright and positions held VERY well, only big new releases ahead. I was worried they would drop more.

11,576 sales this week at #3! Glad to see her clearing 5 figure numbers again - only the top 3 did.

Posted by: jlj Nov 14 2020, 12:06 PM

On the UK sales chart so far she’s went 4-16

She's a real streaming queen. It'll be interesting to see how she does in December for Christmas sales if everything opens back up.

On repeated listens of this I must say “shut up” is the biggest grower.

Initially it was my least favourite but now i rather like it. The wintery / Christmas like vibe it has to it has drawn me in and I like the production to it as well.

Spends a second week at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart cheer.gif

As for rankings, I can't remember when I last posted one but 'just like magic' definitely continues to blossom the most - can't believe it was only 8th for me first time!

'pov' up to #15 on Spotify, bounds ahead of '34+35'. ohmy.gif

Oh wow, its highest position to date ohmy.gif I was expecting it to run out of steam by now with no proper push, but it continues to impress wub.gif

Posted by: JulianNial Nov 16 2020, 10:11 AM

Me too! Watch 'positions', 'pov' and 'Santa Tell Me' knock '34+35' out of the UK chart. At least the latter already got a top 10 peak and it will get certified well in the long run. laugh.gif

Posted by: Jade Nov 16 2020, 06:05 PM

This album is #10 in the mids behind 7 new entries! So another week top 10 looks achievable already as Ari will surely climb with streaming (see: her #5 to #3 rise last week)

Singles mids:

02. positions
21. 34+35
22. pov

'pov' coming to usurp '34+35' any day now!

Posted by: Jade Nov 17 2020, 05:51 PM

'pov' has once again reached a new peak on Spotify at #13 wub.gif '34+35' climbs to #16 and 'positions' is down to #2 behind Billie.

Presuming the album is still at #10 in the mids from the info we have - hopefully it starts climbing soon.

Songs:

1 BBC Radio 2 Allstars - Stop Crying Your Heart Out (22.3k) *
2 Ariana Grande - positions (21.7k)
3 Billie Eilish - Therefore I Am (21.1k) *

21 Ariana Grande - pov

G'won 'pov', climb into the top 20 *.* shall see if '34+35' has any video effect as that has just dropped.

Posted by: Brightest Blue Nov 17 2020, 09:29 PM

pov hasn’t got Hot Hits either!

Posted by: jlj Nov 18 2020, 12:01 PM

#10 for the albums is quite good considering this weeks really competitive.

Could see it maybe climbing a few places as well (well maybe to around ~8).

Posted by: Bré Nov 19 2020, 03:01 PM

My very belated 2 cents on the album which I never posted xx

The title track is by far the best song on here but the album overall is definitely better than I was expecting it to be, 'just like magic' and 'nasty' stuck out as other immediate faves and other songs from it have already been growing on me (especially 'pov'). Still only heard most of the album tracks the once but I do plan to revisit them soon to see if any other songs do click more with another listen (I think there are quite a few that have the potential to do so).

Rough ranking (with the caveat that the only songs I've heard more than once are the top 6 and '34+35'):

1 positions
2 just like magic
3 nasty
4 pov
5 motive
6 my hair
7 west side (this has one of the best instrumentals on the album, I think it's just too underdeveloped and short, if it was fleshed out a bit more it could very easily be up there with the top 3 as my big takeaways from the album. Let us manifest a remix featuring Tinashe into reality pls)
8 34+35
9 off the table
10 safety net
11 love language
12 shut up
13 obvious
14 six thirty

I am really wanting 'safety net' to be one that grows on me as I don't like being so at odds with Jade's opinions kink.gif I do think all of the top 10 are at least solid, the last 4 are more forgettable than anything else (apart from 'shut up' which also has a great instrumental but the lyrics are a little on the 'a choice' side).

I think I'd rank it either 3rd or 4th among her discog, a bit behind 'thank u, next'/'Dangerous Woman' and a bit ahead of 'Yours Truly'/'My Everything', and about level with 'sweetener'. Three pretty clear tiers of Ariana albums there for me.

Posted by: Jade Nov 20 2020, 05:48 PM

Yessss 'pov' climbed to #19 today, brilliant!

More good news - the album has indeed spent another week in the UK top 10 - #9 this week! biggrin.gif Was lowkey worried Lewis Capaldi and his new signed copies would keep her out or something, but nope, she actually climbed since the mids as hoped. 6 new entries above her so great stuff.

Edit - with 9,714 sales, less than 100 copies behind Sophie Ellis-Bextor in 8th. Hopefully certified silver in a couple of weeks.

Posted by: jlj Nov 20 2020, 06:02 PM

Good sales this week that’s not too much of a drop from last week in terms of its actual sales at the end of the week.

I was thinking she’d stay top 10 as well that’s good going too! With both 34+35 and pov rising I think next weeks sales for the album will be similar too. Hoping she stays top ten again but we shall see!

Posted by: Jade Nov 20 2020, 06:47 PM

Both 'My Everything' and 'Dangerous Woman' had dropped out of the top 10 by week three so this has already beaten both for that longevity! Fingers crossed for next week too. Her drop-off from last week was less than 2k sales so it's swiftly stabilising. As you say, the hits from the album will help that stability too. 'positions' still at #1 and both 'pov' and '34+35' climbing in the chart. I'm sure most of the new releases from this week will fade away - what are the big new releases for the next album chart?

Posted by: jlj Nov 20 2020, 07:02 PM

BTS and Michael Ball and Alfie Boe are the biggest two I’d say.

Neil Diamond, Josh Groban and Iron Maiden too!

Posted by: Jade Nov 20 2020, 07:04 PM

Ooh okay! Those 5, Kylie, Little Mix and AC/DC placing in the top 10 would free up 2 spaces so fingers crossed. AC/DC were quite front-loaded too.

Ready for this, 'Christmas & Chill', 'Christmas Kisses' and the Mariah collab to dominate the next couple of months of my life laugh.gif

Posted by: jlj Nov 21 2020, 02:19 AM

I can’t remember much of Christmas & Chill bad stan alert! I did buy it but I can never listen to Xmas music until December but I will blast it. I actually seen a tweet from her the other day where she said it was her favourite body of work she’s ever done. Although I think at some point she’s tweeted every album / EP she’s ever done is her favourite she’s ever done. An enthusiastic queen when she’s hyping the current cycle laugh.gif

I think AC/DC could fall big this week well bigger than what Kylie did. I don’t think there’s as much scope for their album in week two and the fans they have and aren’t as obsessive either I don’t think there’s been additional formats. I think we may end up top ten again for sure after Christmas though if she does drop out this week. I imagine sales wise the drop won’t be too much even if it falls in “position” laugh.gif

I was gonna say I hope the album goes gold by year end but I didn’t realise how close that is!

Posted by: Jade Nov 21 2020, 04:56 PM

We're hoping to do some kind of Christmas forum party and relevant survivor next month, especially now the Mariah collab is coming out - watch this space!

Back to this album - it's just been pointed out in the chart forum that 'positions' is now the longest running album in the top 10 with its 3 weeks laugh.gif cheeseblock.png

Posted by: Jade Nov 23 2020, 04:47 PM

#19 in the mids today which is a little lower than I would've hoped, although same with Kylie at #14, here's to climbing throughout the week again!

34+35 #16
pov #23

I wouldn't worry to much, I feel like it's going to come back in a big way post-Christmas! If Ari's team works to get a video done and start promo for it in January, it would be a very smart move.

Posted by: Jade Nov 25 2020, 06:29 PM

The album has risen to #14 today in the mids, great to see it 5 places higher than in the Monday ones already! Snatch that projected 4th top 10 week Ari biggrin.gif

Hope there'll be news of a vinyl release in the not too distant future.

Posted by: LewisGT Nov 25 2020, 08:20 PM

The longest-running album in the top 10 to just about climb back in by Friday, set to be the new Lewis Capaldi laugh.gif

I hope there's a vinyl release soon too. I have the rest of her albums on the format so I need to complete the collection!

Posted by: Jade Nov 26 2020, 01:16 PM

Yep Ariana is now up to #11 in the album mids today so top 10 tomorrow is looking good - fantastic! She's in a great position where her album can sell off the back of multiple hits already, as much as I'd love to see some promo for this era too.

My collection is suffering also laugh.gif and a shame they abandoned vinyl singles this era! Although not complaining about how cheap the CD single was.

Posted by: Liam.k. Nov 26 2020, 04:13 PM

I don't think I've commented on the album itself in here since my first listen (where it already exceeded my low expectations); I'm pleased to say that it's continuing grow strength to strength! I'm not sure where I'd place it in my Ariana album rank yet, but it's definitely coming across as her most consistent and authentic album to date - I mentioned before that it seems to be the album she always wanted to make. I might be alone on this one but I've picked up on some slightly Madonna-'Erotica' vibes across the album. There's the obvious comparison regarding themes but the casual vibe, the jazzy instrumentation and the humour felt very reminiscent.

My rank:

1. my hair
2. safety net
3. positions
4. pov
5. motive
6. love language
7. six thirty
8. just like magic
9. 34+35
10. west side
11. off the table
12. obvious
13. nasty
14. shut up

The album definitely feels like it's designed to be best enjoyed as a complete listen, but there's a handful of songs here that I'd return to individually!

Posted by: Alohomara Nov 26 2020, 04:52 PM

While positions didn't make it to my top 3 Ariana projects, there are several songs like pov and safety net that are contenders to be top 15 of her discography. Pov in particular which I want to call her best song but am waiting for enough time to pass before making hasty judgements.

Posted by: Jade Nov 27 2020, 05:48 PM

That ranking Liam *.* great taste. 'my hair' and 'positions' are still getting better and better for me right now <3

Welcome to the Ariana AF btw, Alohomara, great to see some new posters here! So much 'pov' love on the forum *.*

Btw Ariana actually ended up at #11! sad.gif Kylie overtook. Aw, that's a shame, but it is still only a 2 place drop from last week so holding up well.

Posted by: Liam.k. Nov 27 2020, 05:51 PM

I was shocked to see Kylie at #10! ohmy.gif Thought Ariana had that in the bag.

Posted by: Alohomara Nov 28 2020, 10:30 AM

Also yes it was surprising that the album didn't make it to the top 10. The UK album rules for counting streams really hurts an album like positions that has only two singles.

Posted by: jlj Nov 28 2020, 12:21 PM

On sales only she was #45 on the albums though.

I hope pov helps to push the albums physical sales (tbh I think it’s more the closure of non essential shops too I hope and think that when HMV stores open again her sales will boost as I don’t think she’s the type of artist who’d sell a lot in supermarkets laugh.gif ).

All of her album runs up to the 5th week:

Yours Truly: 07-45-82-113-155 DeadBanana.gif

01-03-09-11-18 official
04-16-29-45-50 sales
01-02-01-01-04 streaming

Week-by-week sales:

12/11/2020 01 27,472 (+ 3 copies pre-release)
19/11/2020 03 11,576
26/11/2020 09 9,714
03/12/2020 11 8,376
10/12/2020 18 7,400 (estimate)

The album will probably keep slipping away as it's doing poorly on pure sales at a time when the sales market is increasing, but it's holding up rather well in term of chart units. It should easily bounce back into the Top 10 in January. It would be the perfect time to push another single as it could put the album back in the Top 3.

Posted by: Slade Dec 10 2020, 10:04 AM

Posted by: Jade Jan 15 2021, 05:56 PM

Top 10 re-entry still not happening as this is down to #15 this week!

01-03-09-11-18-26-27-29-11-11-15

8 (non-consecutive) weeks top 20 still not bad at all though!

Posted by: Jade Jan 22 2021, 05:50 PM

Down to #24 this week.

Eminem's album rose from 20-3 just because of a CD release this week - she could really use a similar boost but with vinyl. There's so much they could do - that, price reduction, 'pov' as a more album-seller friendly single, any promo whatsoever lol etc. Well, 12 weeks top 30 is fine so far but hopefully something can be done at some point.

Posted by: Jade Jan 24 2021, 10:54 PM

Meanwhile, her stability continues to be really good in the U.S.

The album was actually up two places there to #5 this week!

YES YES YESSSSSS!!!! w00t.gif w00t.gif w00t.gif

This album was actually #23 in the mids today so looking at a climb from last week anyway if it keeps it up.

They dropped 5k copies at 5am U.K. time, on the U.S. store and all sold out fast sad.gif so yeah, didn't get one </3 hopefully more soon and on the U.K. store!

Non-mover in the end this week. 01-03-09-11-18-26-27-29-11-11-15-24-24

I wonder how close this is to gold now?

Posted by: Jade Jan 30 2021, 06:37 PM

There are more vinyl copies available on her U.S. store now - but if you live in the U.K. then it redirects you to our store where the vinyl disappears sad.gif I'm going to hold on and wait for it to come out in the U.K. as I'd rather not pay the shipping prices anyway.

Also a glow in the dark option as a Target exclusive:

Ari revealed the deluxe track names on the ‘34+35 Remix’ video stream:

No features other than the ‘34+35’ remix of course.

It was also mentioned that ‘34+35’ was originally supposed to be the lead and ‘love language’ nearly didn’t make the cut drama.gif

I'm so hyped! I am seriously hoping for an up tempo.

Posted by: Envoirment Feb 15 2021, 11:05 PM

Really liking this album still and excited for the deluxe! Still mad "pov" wasn't made a single sad.gif Although it could always be made one after the deluxe release/a song from that is pushed? I was hoping "Motive" would get the single treatment as well.

Posted by: JulianNial Feb 16 2021, 07:57 PM

I think there's still hope, I'm sure even with the deluxe if she sent 'pov' to radio and made a video everyone would swallow it up.

Posted by: Liam.k. Feb 17 2021, 01:08 AM

Nothing would surprise me with Ariana anymore, I bet she doesn’t release another single from the main tracking list.

I was so happy that a vinyl had materialised at all that I snapped it up straight away when available in the U.K. laugh.gif especially with the nice colour.

I think I'd only buy a deluxe vinyl as well if the artwork was different.

I might just get the standard version too tbh - not sure how essential the deluxe would be and I only really want one copy of each in my collection. As you say the colour is a big selling point for the standard wub.gif

'test drive' sounds GREAT, a 'motive' part II, probably the one I'm most excited about, however very intrigued by where 'main thing' is going when the snippet cuts out.

Exciting news about 'motive' too, a chart presence would be most welcomed! cool.gif

omg the songs are SO short, not the longest one of the 4 being 2:09 eek

none of these are doing much on first listen for me, they all just feel like interludes sad.gif

Posted by: Jade Feb 19 2021, 10:21 AM

On first listen I’m not sure if any of these will be challenging my ultimate standouts on the album (safety net, love language, my hair etc.) but I think they’re better than the more filler moments on the main track list and should be quite a fun, upbeat extension for the whole experience. I am also disappointed about the lengths though - not the full songs barely being double the duration of the interlude laugh.gif they could’ve done with being fleshed out a bit more. Also no new cover aww.

Posted by: Cameron Feb 19 2021, 11:00 AM

Meh. I listened to them this morning and I can’t remember how any of them go. I’m so disappointed with this era.

Posted by: Jade Feb 19 2021, 11:14 AM

The songs are quickly flying up iTunes:

7. Ariana Grande - worst behavior
8. Ariana Grande - test drive
9. Ariana Grande - main thing
12. Ariana Grande - someone like u (interlude)

Posted by: Lee_J11 Feb 19 2021, 12:48 PM

Not all 4 “new” songs being barely over 7 and a half minutes in total. Literally what is the point

Posted by: JulianNial Feb 19 2021, 01:10 PM

2 minutes?! That's a joke, they couldn't have found a way to stretch the tracks to over 2.5 minutes? I'm also annoyed that there's no deluxe cover. This all feels a little lazy. 'Test Drive' is still a bop though and I do like the other tracks despite the length. 'pov', 'motive', 'just like magic', 'nasty', 'my hair', 'love language' and 'safety net' all remain supreme.

Posted by: Adam Ora Feb 19 2021, 03:02 PM

What a colossal disappointment sad.gif

Posted by: Jade Feb 19 2021, 03:10 PM

Now I've had a bit more time to spam the new songs I think I'd go...

worst behavior > test drive > main thing

Not too much separating 'worst behavior' and 'test drive' for me really but the switch up of the talk-singing style on the former just about clinched it, loved that. I'm glad the driving metaphors are back too in the latter after her verse in the '34+35' remix containing those was cut kink.gif 'test drive' reminds me a little of 'motive' with the repetitive chorus and snappy beat, if a little more soft. Thematically the bonus tracks are mellow in general actually - the main contains songs like 'off the table' and 'safety net' where she felt afraid to love again - but in all these extra songs she seems quite positive and settled in her relationship, which is great to hear. 'main thing' strikes me as the least memorable and essential right now and probably the one that could've done with being fleshed out the most. The lyrics are particularly lovely and even this song is more of an upbeat contribution compared to moments on the standard, with the fairly chirpy beat, but it's not really hitting in the same way as the other two for me.

The interlude gives me serious 00s R&B vibes with the twinkly production and brass instruments. A slow intro to follow on nicely from 'pov' on the standard but morphs into more of a trappy song to prepare us for the more upbeat 'test drive' just around the corner.

I think as a release day this has been disappointing with just 7 minutes of new content - the one additional song that is the longest is the remix aka the one we already knew :') and there's always going to be a niggle of wanting an extra minute of all these songs. But as a whole package of 'positions' add-ons I think the album now being bumped up to 51 minutes will be a good whole experience for me going forward. I'm far from blown away today and wanted more but some more upbeat additions are still welcome.

Posted by: LewisGT Feb 19 2021, 03:20 PM

I listened on dinner break and thought ‘worst behavior’ sounded the best on first listen.

Excited to listen to them more over the weekend.

Posted by: MrAndrewMan Feb 19 2021, 04:09 PM

Definitely echo the fact that these tracks are wayyyy too short - when I loaded up the album on Spotify and saw the track lengths I was pretty disappointed.

Aside from that, I think they're all solid additions. For me they definitely increase the quality of the overall album, and are really cohesive with the standard tracks too.

The interlude is a nice way to bridge the gap between 'pov' and the new songs. As for the other 3, I think ‘test drive’ is my favourite but I’m finding it difficult to pick a favourite out of ‘worst behaviour’ and ‘main thing’.

Posted by: Jade Feb 19 2021, 04:47 PM

'motive' continuing to climb on Spotify: newup.png 122 142 Ariana Grande – Motive (feat. Doja Cat)

Interested to see what kind of effect the new deluxe tracks will have tomorrow. Everything is top 10 on iTunes now - even the interlude laugh.gif

Edit: the album climbed in the chart today so keeps up the top 40 run! 01-03-09-11-18-26-27-29-11-11-15-24-24-29-39-33 ~ here's to the deluxe boost now happy.gif

Posted by: Among Haus Feb 19 2021, 06:58 PM

The bonus tracks are cute enough but not too essential and I agree about being annoyed at how short they are sob.gif

I think I'd have appreciated them more if they just came with the original album as a deluxe then instead of the build of hype we got leading up to this release. I get why she did it though, to drum up more hype and interest/streaming etc but yeah~

Overall, not bad - I will keep them!

Posted by: ElevenSnake Feb 19 2021, 08:05 PM

I kind of thought Test Drive would be similar in style to Olivia Rodrigo's Drivers licence but it isn't. Quite a good song and I like the orchestral influenced production.

Main Thing I find rather boring.

Worst behaviour is good though, like Jade I liked the talk-singing.

Posted by: Envoirment Feb 20 2021, 01:18 AM

These are way too short and the deluxe feels so... lazy? laugh.gif Maybe they just did it to tack on the 34+35 remix for extra album sales/streams?

On the plus side, it looks likely they will push singles from the original track listing. Given the current surge for "Motive" I hope they go with that follow by "pov".

Posted by: gooddelta Feb 21 2021, 02:56 PM

Does the intro of Test Drive sample Sure by Take That, or is it just a coincidence? Crazily similar.

Posted by: Alberto! Feb 21 2021, 03:55 PM

Definitely non-essential additions for me, low both in duration and originality for me.
