Beyoncé has started recording for her fifth album, a list of confirmed people she's worked with so far are:

I am surprised she has started working on the album already, I thought she would be focusing on the DC reunion?

I thought the DC reunion was nothing but albums of previously unreleased material / their old albums re-issued or sth like that.

Posted by: Acoustic 10th August 2012, 02:20 PM

I read somewhere that Kelly didn't want to get back together.

Posted by: Lovett™ 10th August 2012, 03:16 PM

It was Mathew trying to force them back together because he's poor now that he's stopped stealing from Beyoncé. I doubt there was any possibility of a reunion. They're all focusing on their solo work.

Beyoncé will be working with the Cataracs as well.

Oh I'm not looking forward to songs with the Cataracs sad.gif I know Diplo and Switch managed to work on 4, but I'm not sure they will - have they even ever produced one good song?

Posted by: Lovett™ 12th August 2012, 11:53 AM

Kanye has also been tweeting that he's in the Hampton's with Bey and Jay.

Posted by: Liаm 12th August 2012, 11:56 AM

Yeah I'm bit apprehensive about The Cataracts as well... I did like Run The World and hope for one or two more tracks in that vein but the Cataracts are nothing but generic really, and the one thing I love about Beyonce is she never follows trends and hasn't gone electronic like everyone else seems to (except for RTW of course).

Like A G6 was a brilliant song and they are good with Dev admittedly, but Beyonce is a totally different artist... Ryan Tedder should be amazing with her again though, and Diane Warren and Sia always deliver a great track!

Oliver Sim has written a song for Beyoncé

The xx's Jamie Smith has revealed that he is working on building a brand new instrument based on both an MPC sequencer and an iPad.

The producer and DJ told the Observer that he is planning on making a see-through device which will make music via "colourful graphics" and finger taps.

The band's vocalist Oliver Sim also explained that he has written a song for Beyoncé. He said that he has written a track which isn't right for The xx, but which he hopes Beyoncé would like to record "if he can work up the courage to ask".

Earlier this week, Sim told Q that he went for dinner with the pop legend around the time of BBC Radio 1's Hackney Weekend in June. He said: "We all went for dinner. There may have been a husband of hers there. I always had a lot of things I wanted to say to her and I completely choked. Beyoncé is very special. I think the super-pop thing that supposedly died with Michael Jackson is still there, with her. I saw her at Glastonbury and I may have shed a tear."

The xx will release their second album, Coexist, on September 10. To launch the LP, the band play a trio of intimate UK shows. They will take to the stage at the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire on September 10, followed by gigs at The Coal Exchange in Cardiff on September 11 and Edinburgh's Usher Hall on September 12. They will also play Bestival on the Isle of Wight next weekend.

Beyoncé
"Bow Down / I Been On"

The artwork features a tiara-wearing Beyoncé Knowles, age 10 or so, in a room crammed with trophies. The lyrics make the message clear: "I'm the number-one chick, I don't need no hype." Musically, this Hit Boy-produced diptych is a homage to B's hometown, Houston, with a woozy "Bow Down" beat that segues into a chopped-and-screwed rap. In "I Been On," her voice is pitch-shifted to make her sound like a 400-pound thug as she gets in touch with her inner Pimp C ("Gold everything/Gold-ass chain/Gold-ass rings/Gold-ass fangs"). All in all, it's her most aggressive song ever: a shot at the diva competition and a warning to anyone who'd take the wrong message from the title of her forthcoming LP, Mrs. Carter: "I took some time to live my life/But don't think I'm just his little wife." When she sings, she growls; when she raps, she sneers. Bow down – or at least take cover.

According to Rolling Stone, the new album is called Mrs. Carter. Not 100% though.

Want a new Beyoncé album? Sorry, suckers! King Bey is done with the album game. It’s all about sixty-second snippets, random commercials and guest features on other artists’ songs. Beyoncé's not playing by your rules. What, you want to buy something on iTunes? Lend commercial support to your favourite diva? Not gonna happen. Beyoncé doesn't care about what you want. She’s Beyoncé. She doesn't have to.

So! What happens when an overzealous fan actually manages to pin down the “Grown Woman” chanteuse and ask her the question on everyone’s mind? As Digital Spy reports, a Norwegian fan wrote in her blog that she went backstage for a special meet-and-greet after her Oslo show, where she had the audacity to ask that all-important question: ”Everything went so fast that I could only say that I love [new song] ‘Grown Woman’ and ask her when her album is coming,” she wrote.

The fan continued: “‘In November’ was her answer before her gaze drifted to the next fan. Got a faint feeling that she disliked the question.”

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha.

So, first of all, this has been translated from Norwegian (and it’s all just hearsay, not confirmed), so take the very specific syntax and word choice used here with a grain of salt, but seriously, has there ever been a more Beyoncé description of Beyoncé than this quote? The hilarious visual of Beyoncé, radiating apathy, her gaze drifting to the next fan. All those fans, lined up just for a glimpse of her, as she eyes each one of them with a wary contempt. Plebeians, she thinks to herself, stifling a gust of haughty laughter.

And then: “Got a faint feeling that she disliked the question.” Well, of course she did, Norwegian fan! You actually had the balls to ask Beyoncé this totally reasonable thing, which is when she is finally going to stop torturing her loyal fans and actually give them new music! Surely that’s not something she’s going to like. She’s not going to be excited about being implicitly called out for this wheezing lurch of a comeback, all these false starts and disappointments. She’s not going to spit on you or punch you in the neck (even though she probably wants to), but she’ll absolutely communicate — faintly and politely — that she dislikes the question. And you, Norwegian fan. She dislikes you, too.

In short: Beyoncé's new album is coming in November; also, she hates you.

A representative for Beyoncé categorically denied a new report in The Hollywood Reporter about supposed delays to the singer's fifth studio album on Wednesday, telling The Huffington Post that an official release date had never been set.

Beyoncé is recording music in the studio while completing her Mrs. Carter World Tour, the representative said in a phone call to HuffPost. A press rollout will accompany any official release date (and, if need be, any official delays).

Quite probably. She did have a writing camp set up in the Hamptons, with Sia and The-Dream etc. all there writing songs. I just hope that this album is more commercially successful than 4 but still retains the quality.

QUOTE
NEW YORK, Dec. 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Parkwood Entertainment/Columbia Records -- The fifth solo studio album from Beyoncé is now available worldwide, exclusively on the iTunes Store (www.iTunes.com/beyonce). The self-titled set is the artist's first visual album. BEYONCÉ is infused with 14 new songs and 17 visually stunning, provocative videos shot around the world from Houston to New York City to Paris, and Sydney to Rio de Janeiro, all before the album's release.

"I see music," says Beyoncé about her decision to create a visual album. "It's more than just what I hear. When I'm connected to something, I immediately see a visual or a series of images that are tied to a feeling or an emotion, a memory from my childhood, thoughts about life, my dreams or my fantasies. And they're all connected to the music."

That the album is available on the day the world is learning about its release is an unprecedented strategic move by the artist to deliver music and visual content directly to her fans when she wants to and how she wants to, with no filter. This unique approach allows music fans to be the first to listen, view, engage and form their own opinions void of any middleman. In the age of social media and an insatiable appetite for direct communication, this is the answer to the question asked over and over again, when is Beyoncé's next album coming?

"I didn't want to release my music the way I've done it," she states. "I am bored with that. I feel like I am able to speak directly to my fans. There's so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans. I felt like I didn't want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it's ready and from me to my fans."

Stripped of gimmicks, teasers and marketing campaigns, this project is truly about art before hype.

Starting now, BEYONCÉ is available globally and exclusively on the iTunes Store (www.itunes.com/beyonce).

For an artist who has been the target of leaks, this is a fully designed preventative plan. The album will be offered as a cohesive body of work with every song and every video available all at once for one single purchase.

While not a concept album, the record is designed to be consumed as a comprehensive audio/visual piece from top to bottom. The antithesis of making singles, the visual album is a non-linear journey through the thoughts and visions of Beyoncé.

Manufacturing of physical albums begins today and the double disc CD/DVD will be available at retail in time for the holidays.

Facebook exclusively premieres Part One of "Self-Titled," a mini doc feature that gives a glimpse into the entire project. It details her mind-set and artistic vision throughout the making of BEYONCÉ. By embracing an ever-evolving digital landscape, she creates an innovative, fully immersive, multiplatform experience for the first visual album of her career, completely changing the way her fans will consume music.

Not one to stand on past achievements, this is an artist who thrives on evolving, challenging herself and raising the bar. This creative process gave Beyoncé power over her music and provided an opportunity to control how the music is heard. She is not playing by the rules and breaking what is expected, preferring to put music out as an entire body of work.

Beyoncé, wearing multiple hats as writer, producer and director, put together a genius team of artists, songwriters, producers and video directors for her visual album that include JAY Z, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Pharrell Williams, Drake, The Dream, Sia, Ryan Tedder, Miguel, Frank Ocean, Hit Boy, Ammo, Boots, Detail, Jake Nava, Hype Williams, Terry Richardson, Melina Matsoukas, Jonas Akerlund, Ricky Saiz, Pierre Debusschere, @lilinternet, Noah "40" Shebib, Francesco Carrozzini, Caroline Polachek, Ed Burke, Bill Kirstein and Todd Tourso.

She recorded all over the world for a year and a half but the initial recording started after the writers and producers gathered under one roof in The Hamptons, New York's beach enclave, in the summer of 2012 to live together, work together and to immerse themselves into her world and into her head. The fans that have grown up with the performer, mature and seasoned enough to relate to the content and the shared experiences, inspire the music, with themes that explore love, loss, fear, anger, honesty, happiness, sexuality and confidence.

For the videos, some of which she co-directed, she preferred to work with a more care-free formula. Shot primarily during her successful "Mrs. Carter Show World Tour," the videos were veiled in secrecy, even though they were filmed in open places, including a beach in Brazil, the streets of NYC, on the famed Cyclone Rollercoaster in Coney Island, New York, downtown Los Angeles, a chateau in Paris, a roller skating rink in Houston, Texas where she skated as a child, and a beautiful church in South America. She mixed up the creative, going for big and small and set out on shoots eager to capture the spontaneity and honesty in every moment. The videos are visually stimulating, charged with visionary cinematography and clever storytelling. They capture every side of who she is, complete with vulnerability and imperfections.

BEYONCÉ is an explosive sonic and visual communiqué to music fans from an artist who has earned the right to do things on her terms. "I just want to give my album to the people I love and respect and hope that they feel the same thing I felt when I made the music," said Beyoncé.

Well, by snippets, I mean the 1-and-a-half minute clips on iTunes; I think you can usually get a pretty good idea from listening to nearly half the song. But anyway, obviously it's possible I might change my mind when I hear it in full, although I doubt it.

I've not listened to the snippets, but from what people said, they weren't great representations of the songs. I was recommend listening to the songs in full. At least try and watch the music videos when they go online. They're all visually spectacular and make most of her other music videos look like high school IT projects.

What about the album makes it self-indulgent and pretentious?

If it's because they doesn't seem to be any obvious hits from the album, Beyonce doesn't need to do that. She's clever and knows that an artist of her status doesn't need hits to survive in the music industry. That's why she focuses so much on touring.

Except she's the Queen of hit singes? The woman had an era where she released music to her two main radio audiences just for hits... If that doesn't scream as wanting hit singles, I don't know what is.

This album release strategy is interesting, I wonder how it'll benefit her long term? She's obviously been taking release tips from Kanye.

What isn't self-indulgent and pretentious?

The Kanye "let's have a half-arsed album cover" trick to try and make it look simple like we don't care blah blah blah. Or maybe featuring her daughter on a song? Incredibly self-indulgent! Trying to be innovative by releasing music videos for every song.

I loved "I Am...", "B'Day", "4" and "Dangerously In Love", but this is just awful!

Posted by: ★ G R I F F ★ 13th December 2013, 06:03 PM

I'm sure she's just trying to be different by giving her fans a visual experience of the music from the album. Nothing wrong with that.

And she learns from the best *.*

So shocked by this ohmy.gif very innovative to do it like this. Going to listen later, can't wait!

Posted by: Jark 13th December 2013, 08:13 PM

90 second snippets rarely if ever do songs justice. What a ridiculous comment.

Anyway after one play I think it's a very solid album, much improved on the bland 4. I'm not really a fan of this "sound" usually (minimalist production, low key melodies etc) but most of it works here. Absolutely loving Pretty Hurts, Jealous, Rocket and XO. Presumably the latter will be announced as the pop single soon. Good work, Bey.

XO is beautiful.

Posted by: Davidson 13th December 2013, 09:32 PM

I just watched the entire album of music videos. It really is visually stunning and made me love the album so much more. I would urge anyone to watch it rather than just purely listening to it. Song breakdown:

Pretty Hurts - 8.0 (Great message, a strong melody on this as well, think it is one of the only single options)
Ghost - 8.0 (I love the production on this. Would have loved a whole song with singing on it too with this beat)
Haunted - 8.0 (Very good mood setter. The music video for this is brilliant too)
Drunk In Love - 7.0 (I can see this maybe getting released due to Jay and its urban edge, but I don't think it's the best)
Blow - 8.0 (Love the funk vibe)
No Angel - 5.0 (Can't really get into this, the production is actually quite, dare I say it, Solange-esque, but disappointing)
Yoncé - 8.0 (I can't help but love this, great fun)
Partition - 9.0 (One of my initial stand outs. Love the chorus)
Jealous - 8.0 (Possibly one of the album's catchiest offerings, another strong one)
Rocket - 8.0 (Love a Beyoncé slow jam anyway. Cousin of 'Dance For You')
Mine - 8.5 (The change-over in this works so well, the first part is nice but when the song picks, it is wonderful)
XO - 9.0 (Just has such a happy vibe. The obvious single choice I would think)
***Flawless - 6.5 (Was never that big on 'Bow Down', the 'Flawless' part brings it up a little but nothing too special)
Superpower - 8.5 (Grown on me so much already, just like I expected from a Frank Ocean offering)
Heaven - 8.0 (Video made me appreciate this so much more. Been better Beyoncé ballads, but I still love it)
Blue - 7.0 (Disappointing closer, I must admit. I like the verses a lot, but find the chorus melody a little bland)

I love this. I can't say I prefer it to '4' just yet, but I really think she has pulled this off so well. This album shows great restraint on her part, not only vocally but also melodically. Sure, the melodies maybe aren't as instant as her previous efforts, meaning single choices are slightly more difficult, but they kind of slowly creep up on you throughout the song and when they hit, they are really great.

'XO' is fabulous, if not a bit overrated in terms of how much people love it. And the Jay-Z duet is doing absolutely NOTHING for me. Other than that, pretty solid album!

Blow will be the International single then and for US Pop Radio where as I can only see Drunk In Love being for US urban radio. I love Blow but I would have thought XO would have been the obvious choice to lead the single campaign with. At least it is third I suppose. I also think after Blow and XO that Partition and Pretty Hurts should be the next two singles.

Completely agree (although I'm currently on 'Blow' of my first listen through, it's ok atm. Not amazing, but it's ok.) particularly with the latter part. 'Blow' would flop if it was by anyone else over here (very Timberlake though, so maybe not as much as I think it would? - that'd be down to Timbaland I guess), so I hope she skips straight to 'XO' for the UK, which I heard yday and LOVED. I'm liking the album though. But I loved 'The 20/20 Experience' and liked 'channel ORANGE', which is what this reminds me of so far (like a strange mix of the two - also, throw in a TINY bit of Keri Hilson (NO LIE - 'Slow Dance' in particular!)).

Her fans definitely put me off more though, but I think I'm used to it now and apart from the rare few gems per album, I've kind of got used to it and am happy to settle with "her albums are never going to be as good as the hype/her fans suggest for me". The only album of hers I've liked (well, loved) was 'I Am...'. This is my second favourite though.

Posted by: 152chris 15th December 2013, 05:28 PM

My only criticism is that it should have been released in the summer where quite a lot of the songs remind me of that particular season.

Posted by: Jark 16th December 2013, 09:53 AM

In places this album gives me Erotica/Janet. teas. Which is quite clearly a very good thing. "Jealous" is everything.

I'm just jealous. I'm just human. Don't judge me.

EVERYTHING.

Also 550-600k sold from Friday to Sunday in the US.

the album is kinda one big ode to herself which is sad, but at least now she's not overhyped anymore.

I so agree with this!

I barely like any of the singles she's released (I dislike almost all of them) but this album is something else!!. 'Pretty Hurts' is awful but I'm glad it's the opener so I can skip it right away.

i think those thinking that the hype is off-putting is being a bit contrary considering most of the year we have to sit through the same attitude thrown at every other album going. the fact that this has attracted people from all sorts of demographics shows that surely it will be a good listen???? you don't get rave reviews for nothing!

and tbh asking for a full good (nay, GREAT) album of cohesive work from one of the big pop divas these days is a VERY big ask, so when it comes along we're gonna grab it with our hands and place it firmly on the pedestal. it is what it is.

10 Pretty Hurts

08 No Angel
10 Partition
09 Jealous
07 Rocket
08 Mine
10 XO
08 Flawless

Now I love most of her past singles like everyone else (Halo, Irreplaceable, Crazy In Love etc) but this really is her best album as a whole for me. So pleased that is seems as though XO is going to be the lead single for this era. Smash waiting to happen!

OK XO hit me earlier, so that's two songs I'll happily revisit from the album now. Not bad to be fair and I will give the album another listen soon. Can see XO being a decent sized hit for her but not a massive one, nothing on this album sounds like a massive hit IMO.

Guinness World Record

The surprise release of Beyoncé's fifth solo album has earned the R&B star a new Guinness World Records title for fastest-selling album on iTunes.

The former Destiny's Child singer took the music industry and her own fans by surprise when she released her new, eponymously titled album exclusively on iTunes on Friday without any prior announcement.

The unconventional move has paid off in spectacular style: in its first three days of availability as a digital download, the "visual" album featuring 14 new tracks and 17 videos shifted 828,773 copies worldwide to shatter the iTunes record established by Justin Timberlake's 20/20 Experience (580,000) in March 2013.

"I didn't want to release my music the way I've done it (before). I'm bored with that," Beyoncé said after the release. "I feel like I'm able to speak directly to my fans. There's so much that gets between the music, the artist and the fans. I felt like I didn't want anybody to give the message when my record is coming out. I just want this to come out when it's ready and (for it to be) from me to my fans."

While the majority of those sales came in the US, where it has racked up 617,213 sales since its release, the album has also already debuted at No.1 in 104 different countries.

Beyoncé also currently holds the record for highest annual earnings for a female singer, having racked up an estimated $80 million (£40 million) according to the 2008 Forbes celebrity list.

This album is surprisingly excellent for me. I've never been a MAJOR fan of hers before although she has her moments (Irreplaceable, Beautiful Liar, Best You Never Had) but this is such a cohesive and forward thinking album, yet the melodies/potential hits are there and the production is flawless throughout. The videos are largely brilliant too, Yoncé is TOO amazing.

Posted by: Queenderella 23rd December 2013, 11:26 AM

I'm still not bored of this album in the slightest having been listening to it for 11 days in a row now. XO is still anthemic but my focus has moved to Partition and Jealous for now. Still am not on a Rocket ship everyone else seems to have hopped on but I'm sure it will click at some point.

I am so obsessed with this album, it's probably a little unhealthy. I was travelling on the MegaBus today and purposely played all the videos on my laptop (with my headphones in) so that the woman next to me would see them. She tapped me on the shoulder, asked me if it was her new album and I said that it was and that I really recommend it. She then thanked me and said she was going to go and buy the album now.

Beyoncé, you're welcome.

P.S. "Partition" is my current jam. "Driver roll up the partition please, I don't need you seeing Yoncé on her knees". wub.gif

Posted by: THEO. 26th December 2013, 11:51 AM

Err... So I've finally watched (the majority of) the videos for the album and I'm just very confused as to why she's decided to portray herself in this way in some of the videos - she's not Rihanna, so she doesn't need to have her bum on show in every single video. As much as I'm enjoying the songs, the video release tactic definitely could have been more well-thought out. It's obvious that she's even used body doubles in a few of them as she didn't have time to film them all!

Posted by: Jark 26th December 2013, 12:07 PM

The videos were filmed over the course of months. She had time. If body doubles were used she must have had other reasons. It's not that uncommon.

Anyway the video anthology aspect of the album is the weak link in my opinion. Quite a few of them are just beauty montage sequence-style videos with nothing memorable to recommend them. It's always going to be the way when you shoot 17 videos, but songs like XO deserve big videos to match.

Still, it's the album of the year and that's what counts.

Posted by: Pavel 26th December 2013, 12:13 PM

The XO video is amazing! It's so feelgood and matches the song COMPLETELY.

Posted by: THEO. 26th December 2013, 12:29 PM

She's always released video anthologies though, just usually once all the tracks have been hits! "XO" is probably my highlight song and video of the album (although "Grown Woman" is up there, such a shame that's not on the audio album sad.gif).

Chart Watch: Beyoncé Takes Female Record

Beyoncé's Beyoncé sold 991K copies in its first 10 days of release. In so doing, it has become the best-selling album by a female artist in 2013. The old record was held by P!nk's The Truth About Love, which has sold 920K copies in 2013 (on top of 945K copies it sold in 2012). Beyoncé sold 374K copies in its second week, which was its first full week of release. It sold 617K copies last week, even though it was available for only three days in that tracking week.

Beyoncé's album ranks #1 on The Billboard 200 for the second week. Beyoncé's previous album, 4, also spent its first two weeks at #1, but its sales tally after two weeks was a much more modest 426K.

Beyoncé sold 235K digital copies this week, which puts it at #1 on the Top Digital Albums chart for the second week.

Beyoncé is a cinch to top the 1 million mark in U.S. sales next week. It will become Beyoncé's first album to sell 1 million copies in just three weeks. Her previous fastest album to reach 1M was I Am... Sasha Fierce, which took four weeks. Here's the number of weeks her other previous solo albums took to reach the 1 million mark: Dangerously in Love (seven), B'Day (eight) and 4 (an uncharacteristically slow 26).

If Beyoncé sells about 100K copies in the coming week, it will wind up as one of the top 10 albums of 2013. (Next week's chart, for the tracking week ending Sunday Dec. 29, will be the final one of the year. FYI, the album that is currently #10 for the year-to-date, Mumford & Sons' Babel, has sold 1,083,000 copies in 2013.)

Beyoncé is vying to become the first album to wind up in the year-end top 10 based on just three weeks of sales availability since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking music sales in 1991. The current record-holder as the album that wound up in the year-end top 10 based on the fewest number of weeks in the marketplace is Garth Brooks' Sevens, which ranked among the top 10 albums of 1997 even though it was available for just the last five weeks of that year.

Moreover, if Beyoncé winds up in the year-end top 10, this will be the sixth year that Beyoncé has achieved that feat (counting her work with Destiny's Child). This would put her in a tie with Garth Brooks, Mariah Carey and Eminem as the only artists to have made the year-end top 10 in six different years since 1991, when Nielsen SoundScan began tracking music sales.

Beyoncé is the singer's fifth studio album. It's rather unusual for an artist to release an eponymous album this deep into a career. There are only five other cases where an artist has reached #1 with an eponymous album this far along. Fleetwood Mac's Fleetwood Mac (1976) was that band's 10th studio album (but its first with the line-up that brought it to superstardom). The Beatles' The Beatles (1968, often called The White Album) was the Fab Four's ninth studio album in the U.S. (excluding soundtracks and compilations). Heart's hit-studded Heart (1985) was that group's eighth studio album. Metallica's Metallica (1991) was that band's fifth studio album. Janet Jackson's janet. (1993) was her fifth studio album.

QUOTE
Should Beyoncé choose to settle in the world of Adult Contemporary one day, she'll have most of the legwork already done. She's spent the time since 4, an album that playfully extolled the virtues of marriage, crafting a role for herself in that sphere with the ambitious grace of a good politician. Imagine the fun she had requesting the big hair and bigger fur to help President Obama ring in his second term, or in gussying herself up like Marie Antoinette to promote an international arena tour called The Mrs. Carter Show. The hedge-betting deals with Pepsi and H&M, the (now-defunct) lifestyle blog/newsletter à la Gwyneth Paltrow's goop, the reunion with Destiny's Child, the exquisitely dull autobiographical documentary—she's seemed entirely poised to join Jay Z on his cloud of moneyed middle-age.
In retrospect, the adult gloss feels like an elaborate foil to the trouble she’d been cooking up in private all along. Beyoncé, her fifth solo album, repositions the singer as the Houston-bred Yoncé, a woman lustier and surlier than B, more playful than Bey, fiercer than Sasha but softer and more natural than the lot. The album is brassy but elegant, its post-coital breath smelling faintly of cheap liquor sipped from a crystal flute. It finds Beyoncé shifting gears to pull off her most explicit and sonically experimental music to date, exploring sounds and ideas at the grittier margins of popular music.
It’s tempting to read Beyoncé’s hard edges as an attempt to ride the success of Rihanna or Miley Cyrus’ risqué agendas—but to do so would be to look past the album’s true provocations. Beyoncé pushes boundaries not because it sells sex at every turn, but because it treats a power-balanced marriage as a place where sexuality thrives. At a time when when young people are gripped by an ideological fear of monogamy’s advertised doldrums, Beyoncé boldly proposes the idea that a woman’s prime—personal, professional, and especially sexual—can occur within a stable romantic partnership. Monogamy has never sounded more seductive or less retrograde as when dictated on Beyoncé's terms. The innuendo can be bawdy and overblown—"Can you lick my Skittles/ That's the sweetest in the middle" on "Blow"—but sincerely so. And who would allow Jay Z’s instantly infamous breasts/breakfast line anywhere near the stargazing boom of “Drunk in Love” but someone truly infatuated with him? What’s more is that the erotic themes don’t feel out-of-step with the album’s more decorous moments, like the stadium-filling “XO” or “Blue”, its requisite treatise on motherhood. In Beyoncé’s world, there are illicit doors to be unlocked in the halls of tradition and vice versa.
The record reverberates with the energy of a conservative pop star navigating trends without grasping for them. Its crew of 44 writers, producers, and directors skews heavily toward the hip-hop realm and incorporates niche talents, something Beyoncé tried on 4 when she teamed with artists like Switch and pulled visual ideas from little-known European choreographers discovered via YouTube. It's the collective effort of an all-star team with a deep bench, with contributions from mainstays like Pharrell and The-Dream, to fresh faces like Chairlift's Caroline Polachek, a creative director from streetwear brand Supreme, and a practically-unknown producer named Boots.
Beyoncé’s best songs often reject traditional pop structures in favor of atmosphere—she may have taken some cues from her sister Solange, who now leads a particular wave of collaborative, left-field R&B. The record, her darkest and lushest yet, has a tendency to echo, stop abruptly, or place two separate songs in the space of one. Its most bracing moments are also its toughest and weirdest, like "***Flawless", a two-part growler that makes feminist TED Talk fodder sound legitimately menacing. Timbaland and Justin Timberlake join The-Dream on "Partition" in service of the mean-mugging Yoncé, who snarls and bares her teeth as though the most revered rapper of all time is nobody but her little husband. At the center lies Beyoncé’s practically unfair abilities as a performer—you get the sense that Lady Gaga or Ciara could no sooner pull off the scale or quality of Beyoncé than you or I could pull off a suitable rendition of any of its songs in a karaoke bar.
Beyoncé has loosened up her delivery, too, in a way that highlights her elasticity and shows her pop-cultural antennae tuned to the right channels. Who could’ve predicted that some of the most infectious snippets of pop music in 2013 would not arrive by way of anthemic chorus or assembly-line arrangement, but in Beyoncé’s ad-libbing? You already know the ones: Surfbort, she grunts on “Drunk in Love”, slinging a hashtag like it’s the name of a line of Ikea chairs, the single word serving as both shorthand for woman-on-top and a neat summation of an entire era of trends in rap cadence. You’d also be hard-pressed to find an internet-savvy person in America who hasn’t been possessed by the idea that he or she woke up like this, brain emblazoned with Beyoncé’s half-second I’m so flawless I gave myself a seizure dance. She's achieved the rare feat of validating meme culture by capturing its sneaky potency and delight rather than falling into its cheap, dehumanizing traps. This is a “visual album,” sure, but it’s also a package of modern codes and discreet campaigns, a field of meaningful virtual dioramas. In this sense Beyoncé has a newfound spiritual ally in Drake (Worst! YOLO!),—he shows up on Beyoncé on the bruised "Mine"— her only peer to successfully streamline an internet-rooted mindset into a large-scale pop arena and seek profundity in the process.
Which is all to say that Beyoncé has delivered on the promise she inadvertently made by dropping an album and and its expansive visual counterpart late on a Thursday night in December on iTunes, free of traditional fanfare. Call it a coup or just another victory for her mammoth PR apparatus, but consider the alternatives: The strategy probably would have failed if the quality wasn't there, and the album could not have achieved such an impact without its rogue—in spirit, at least—method of distribution. Beyoncé was unleashed upon the world in a way that could only succeed right now, with an aim to make the audience consume it the way it would have long ago. It’s a line that could be ripped straight from the mouth of an investment-drunk tech startup founder, but it’s true: Beyoncé seized the powers of a medium characterized by its short attention span to force the world to pay attention. Leave it to the posterchild of convention to brush convention aside and leave both sides feeling victorious.

So there was a part truth in the situation then!

Posted by: THEO. 4th November 2014, 05:11 PM

Interesting! A much better idea than a brand new album in my opinion. I'm glad we're finally getting the "Flawless" remix and I'm looking forward to hearing the three new songs. A shame the audio of "Grown Woman" isn't included also but there is a lot of material on the four discs already anyway so I'll let her off tongue.gif

Posted by: HausofJSG'sDog 4th November 2014, 05:17 PM

Yeah the album did not need a sequel or anything to continue from it, so a deluxe (or "platinum") edition is good. Might have to get hold of this too as it's the definitive collection for the era.

Ugh can she just release 'Mine' though before she rounds it all off? sad.gif

Posted by: AdamAloud 4th November 2014, 05:26 PM

I was hoping 'Blow' would be a single at some point but not if the remix features Pharrell!

Posted by: April 4th November 2014, 07:44 PM

I can't wait to own the Flawless Remix and Drunk In Love Remix! cheer.gif They've been needing proper iTunes releases for ages!

Posted by: April 19th November 2014, 05:31 PM

They're really milking it on iTunes. I wish just looking and they now have...

BEYONCE (Original album)
BEYONCE (audio only album) - PREORDER
BEYONCE: Platinum Edition - PREORDER
BEYONCE: Platinum Edition (More) EP - PREORDER

The last one is basically just the Platinum edition without the 2CD original album.

The Platinum Edition has leaked, although y'all should really wait two days and buy it.

04 | 7/11 - Complete WTF moment
11 | Flawless (Remix)
10 | Drunk In Love (Remix)
10 | Ring Off - LOVE IT!
08 | Blow (Remix) - very similar to the original version
08 | Standing on the Sun - love this remix and glad the song made the album in some form

I hope you love 7/11 soon, April. Embrace that ratchet mess for the fun moment it is! wub.gif

I doubt I'll be buying the Platinum Edition, way too expensive for what it is really.

Loving 7/11 music.gif Shame it hasn't hit that many people sad.gif

Posted by: barbaric_dan 22nd November 2014, 11:01 PM

7/11 is incredible.

Posted by: Joe. 24th November 2014, 10:54 AM

7/11 is SO good. Second to Drunk in Love on the whole album/era.

Ring Off is boring.

How come you can't buy platinum edition in full on iTunes?

EMERGENCY EDIT: I now love Ring Off, too.

Beyonce’s surprise album 1 year on: 10 amazing #ChartFacts
24/11/2014
By Rob Copsey

We look back on the success of Beyonce's surprise album a year after its release.

Almost a year ago (11 months and 12 days ago to be precise), Beyonce caught the music world unawares with the surprise release of her fifth studio album Beyonce.

And the release - which came after months of rumours, touring, Pepsi commercials and a show-stopping Super Bowl performance – did not disappoint. Not only did the record receive rave reviews (it made several influential end-of-year album lists), each track was accompanied by its own music video, giving you plenty of Beyonce for your buck.

With a special Platinum Edition of the collection including new tracks and remixes featuring Pharrell Williams and Nicki Minaj out this this week, Official Charts look back at the the incredible success of Beyonce one year on.

Despite being released on a Friday, Beyonce debuted at Number 5 on the Official Albums Chart that Sunday.

In just 48 hours, it sold 68,000 copies in the UK.

On December 16 2013, Apple announced that Beyoncé was the fastest selling album in the history of the iTunes Store, selling almost 830,000 digital copies in its first three days of availability.

Five weeks after its release, the album peaked on the chart at Number 2. The record has so far spent 13 weeks in the Top 10 and 21 weeks in the Top 40.

To date, the record has sold 418,000 copies in the UK, making it the 14th best-selling album of 2014 so far.

Beyonce was certified Platinum by the British Phonographic Industry on February 7th, denoting UK shipments of 300,000 copies.

As of November 2014, Beyonce has sold 5 million copies worldwide.

Drunk In Love is the biggest UK single from the LP. It peaked at Number 9 on the Official Singles Chart in January and to date has sold 458,000 copies in the UK.

The Top 5 best-selling songs from the album are:

1 DRUNK IN LOVE BEYONCE FT JAY Z
2 XO BEYONCE
3 PARTITION BEYONCE
4 PRETTY HURTS BEYONCE
5 MINE BEYONCE FT DRAKE

This year, Beyonce has played 46 concerts - including her On The Run tour with Jay Z - and has performed to over 1.2 million people.

I honestly want Standing On The Sun to get a release, it's probably the second best song on the whole thing behind Flawless sad.gif

Posted by: Euphorique 24th November 2014, 07:36 PM

SOTS is great. I want Jealous released, and Mine. Gosh there are just too many great songs on the album

Posted by: liamk97 24th November 2014, 11:19 PM

The album is on Spotify, so for the first time you can hear the original non-single tracks on there.

Posted by: April 25th November 2014, 12:33 PM

I did suspect they might add the album onto Spotify / VEVO with the release of Platinum Edition. So I'm glad they did so!

Posted by: Euphorique 25th November 2014, 01:00 PM

Ive been playing the Jealous video non stop on VEVO <3

Posted by: NellyXmas. S 25th November 2014, 04:49 PM

So I'm guessing the Platinum EP is ineligible to chart?

Posted by: -Jay- 25th November 2014, 08:06 PM

Seems like it can chart, 'BEYONCÉ' is #48 in the mids.

Posted by: Euphorique 25th November 2014, 10:32 PM

The "More" EP wont count towards Beyonce, only the platinum edition.

Posted by: JosephStyles 25th November 2014, 11:35 PM

Standing on the Sun and Ring Off are pretty decent. The less said about the rest of the EP, the better.

Posted by: Apricot 24th March 2015, 09:49 PM

YASSSSS

I really like this Chris sounds really good on it I wish it was a bit more polished though. I think it would make a good single Jealous is one of my favourite's from the album so underrated !

Posted by: Davidson 3rd April 2015, 11:56 AM

I don't like Chris at all but have to say I think he did well on his version.

Apparently was meant for the re-release but Beyoncé decided to scrap it at the last minute.

Posted by: ♡ Heezus Froot ♡ 3rd April 2015, 12:12 PM

I agree, I don't normally like Chris Brown, but he sounds great on this. It is already too polished, though.

Jealous is a clear highlight on Beyonce, I hope they consider one final single and put this out!

Posted by: Apricot 3rd April 2015, 12:21 PM

I think that's all for the current era, I can't seem them pushing another single at this point.

Posted by: Nelly. S 3rd April 2015, 12:27 PM

I agree, I think a new album in 2016/ early 2017 is more probable which is a shame really as Mine and Jealous were screaming for single release sad.gif

Posted by: Umi 3rd April 2015, 09:43 PM

'Jealous' a single? I couldn't have imagined that.

Posted by: Andrew. 8th March 2017, 11:55 PM

I've fallen in love with this all over again in the past few days. wub.gif It really makes 'Lemonade' look weak in comparison, even though that's a great album in itself. Upon listening all this time later Blue and XO stuck out as the two best ones, which is strange as I've never really liked either that much in the past laugh.gif

EDIT: And listening to ***Flawless has got me yelling BOW DOWN BITCHES randomly during the day

Posted by: SeanmanjiGrey 26th October 2017, 08:34 AM

Confession: I've not really taken much notice of this album other than the singles but Blow is fabulously camp and a total jam!

Posted by: blacksquare 13th December 2018, 01:34 PM

Happy fifth birthday to the album that changed the industry.

Whew

Can someone arrange a rate for it?

Posted by: SGrey 13th December 2018, 06:13 PM

Good thinking! I’ll post one up later (only on the condition Pretty Hurts comes top x)

life changing

One of the biggest moments in pop ever *.*

This album was amazeballs

I feel like this album was the very start of her living up to being the artist she was trying to be. It's a great album.

Posted by: DexTheHalls 15th December 2018, 04:09 PM

5 years! *.* Amazing how time flies, still not sure if I'd rate it above Lemonade tho

I think both are probably on par.
