Son Of Saul is a Hungarian film that won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film this year and has received terrific reviews! It came out this week in the UK and I have managed to find it showing somewhere so I am seeing it tomorrow!
This was so difficult to watch. Excellent film though, great directing and acting. It really showed the horrors of Auschwitz. I happen to have visited Auschwitz past week, and as I saw this film a few months back it really gave me a better idea of the horrors of the Holocaust.
"Son of Saul" is a dramatic film that was released in my country's cinemas last autumn. It made its official debut at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prize (Grand Prix), the International Critics' Prize (FIPRESCI), the François Chalais Prize and the Vulcan Award for Best Sound! The film was applauded by everyone and made a sensation with its content. How dramatic can a story be? The answer is given through out this particular film.
"Son of Saul" takes place in the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp in October 1944. The main character of the story is Saul, a Jewish-Hungarian, who is forced to help the Nazis carry out their unwholesome designs. Saul is a member of the Sonderkommando, composed by Jewish prisoners, which essentially assumed the dirty work of the Nazis. They were those who accompanied the Jews in the concentration camp, undressed them, cared to be there for them and then led them to the gas chambers. Once they die, Sonderkommando had to take the corpses to the furnace, to burn them and cleanse the area of the gas chambers to receive the next Jewish. At one point, Saul, while working in one of the crematory, finds a half dead boy who believes that he is his son. However, the Nazis will kill him and Saul will try to bury it as required by his religion. "Son of Saul" is a movie that will cause very unpleasant feelings to the audience. The Hungarian László Nemes managed to do a great job directing, who turned it into a very realistic way, inevitably creating a heavy and suffocating atmosphere in the movie theater. The camera follows the protagonist in all the scenes and the movie picture is quite limited. It had dark picture and the scenery was very frightening. Frankly, some of these respective images I have only seen in domestic animals slaughterhouses, in general, and dogs slaughterhouses in China through the videos of animal welfare organizations. The human perversity dominates completely in this film, which reminds us how sick and corrupted minds the Nazis had. László Nemes intentionally blurred the image scenes that had to do with naked corpses and the gas chambers but he kept the sound at high volumes, leaving the viewer to imagine by himself what really happened in the extermination camps. The interpretation of Géza Röhrig was great although he is not a professional actor and the exquisite cinematography of Mátyás Erdély played a key role in the film's result.
"Son of Saul" is definitely one of the films that will leave their mark in the seventh art. We may have seen many movies about Nazi concentration camps but this has been filmed in such a way that stands out from all the rest. It was the official submission for Hungary for the "Best Foreign Language Film" and it was one of the five nominated films for a Golden Globe in the same category. It was considered to be the undisputed favorite for the Golden Statuette since it received excellent reviews from critics worldwide. So, it was obvious that it would win the Academy Award. It had a fairly good collections process in my country in the first weeks of release although it was played by a small cinema circuit. It is a film that you do not have to miss!
