I do agree that the relationship being shoved down people's throats probably isn't helping matters either.
The frustrating thing about it all though is that both Shawn and Camila tried to keep it all relatively low-key to begin with (he's always been a very private person, and we didn't exactly hear much about Camila's past relationships?), but as soon as Señorita became the monster hit that it was, it's like his team thought that any possible opportunity to get some PR stunts in, ham it up as much as possible, etc would work wonders for both of them - but instead it's had the complete opposite effect and has been a massive detriment to the era, and a deterrent for what seems like a lot of people from investing in Shawn / Camila / the music. |

Whichever PR employee convinced them to do that god awful Instagram kiss video should have been fired on the spot. I think that alone put off a hell of a lot of people, not just from the relationship but from Shawn and Camila as individuals. Especially for Shawn, after years of being very private and talking extensively about his struggles with anxiety brought on by so much attention, a sudden display of over the top PDA likely alienated a lot of fans.
That video will haunt them both for a very long time, I feel. And it doesn't help that even though there's no song with Camila on the album, she's still been overly present in the whole promotional process than Shawn was for Romance. I respect that they're in love and want to share that, but they could have done it in a way that wasn't so clumsy and forced. Where they both go from here is anyone's guess. The perception of the relationship is clearly affecting their reputations in the public arena, and they should probably work on scaling it back. If they're both as genuine as they say about privacy, they should be able to do that. Shawn was probably never going to have a massive Thank U Next/Purpose style era; I always imagined him having the longevity of someone like Pink who never really reached the superstar status of Britney or Xtina, but stayed true to herself and her music and ended up being a lasting hit maker. I think Shawn could still be like that, but I can't help but think he maybe needs to take a year or two properly away to sort himself out and really perfect his craft and work on his public image. Not too long obviously - 2022/2023 at the latest. He has the potential but his team have seriously fumbled his image in the last 18 months. |

Ouch. There's really nothing else to say at this point, it's a flop. At least in the UK.

I mean it's not like they're even doing anything to try and get sales, so I'm not surprised at the free-falling. It's like they're determined to prove just how little they care about success by... doing as little as possible.
With minimal effort, the least they could do is release Teach Me How to Love / Higher as single(s) (accompanied by music videos)? |

It's kinda of like they decided to take everything that made the 'Shawn Mendes' era a little wonky and magnify it by ten. It's nice to see Monster coming back to the Top 40 but that only has another 3 weeks before it hits ACR and then it'll be gone.....so, with touring unlikely in the near future is the era just done? They need a third single!

I feel like if we don't get another single by the end of this month / some time in February there's no way the era can recover really? (not that it's gonna suddenly bounce back and be a smash, but it'd at least shift some copies!)
I'd hope that if touring still isn't an option they'd consider doing a virtual event again like Kylie's done with Infinite Disco, Dua with Studio 54, etc - albeit with more songs from the album performed than on 'Wonder: The Experience' because that was very short. |

One thing I would bet money on: Shawn's next lead single will be about the most pop radio friendly song you can imagine.

I hope the next single is "Higher". Best song on the album and such a tune. I think it could turn things aorund.

Random ik, but I've just relistened to 'Teach Me How To Love', 'Higher', 'Call My Friends' & '305' for the first time in a while and every single one of them are just as incredible as the first time I heard them.
4 bangers. None of which were officially pushed as singles. HUGE CRIME! |

Randomly re-listening to this album... it's SO good. Deserved far better than it got. But hey, every artist has their 'My December'/'Blackout' moment x

I agree! This is such a strong album and it’s such a shame it didn’t do particularly well. “Teach Me How To Love” should have been a single.
I don’t really understand why “Wonder” the song underperformed - it sounds huge and the video looked good, people just didn’t warm to it. “Monster” was a bit of an error and one of the weakest on the album, though I can definitely see why they thought a song with Justin Bieber would give legs to the campaign. |
