Tones and I looks for a fifth week at #1, the newest challenger coming from Selena Gomez with her comeback single Lose You To Love Me. We should see a boost for Lizzo’s Good As Hell following a remix from Ariana Grande, a few entries from Kanye West’s album, plus new releases from Coldplay with Orphans/Arabesque, The 1975, Kesha and Westlife

Stereophonics could score a seventh #1 album with Kind, contending with Kanye West’s new album Jesus Is King and James Blunt’s Once Upon A Mind. Other new releases include Rick Astley, Van Morrison, Rex Orange County, Neil Young + Crazy Horse, Bruce Springsteen and Cigarettes After Sex

Breakdown of the week
- Saturday: Some information may be posted on social media but it is likely to be missing most streaming data and is unrepresentative.
- Sunday: Official First Look Chart on Radio 1 from 6-7pm
- Monday: OCC Top 100 from 5:45pm
- Tuesday: Top 40 update as and when we receive them with requests, this is NOT 100% guaranteed however. The OCC may publish sales flashes of their own accord but likewise, this is not guaranteed. Twitter and social media is your friend for today. Please post any information you find with a source. Do not nag for updates, we will post a top 40 update if we receive one.
- Wednesday: Top 40 update from Music Week from 5:45, and potential top 5 sales but this is not guaranteed.
- Thursday: See Tuesday.

Other notes (please read)
- You may make requests Tuesday to Thursday but outside the top 40, specific positions will not be revealed (unless deemed necessary by a mod).
- Please do not demand a midweek update, one will be posted as and when we receive the information. Patience is a virtue.
- Sales information will be given out as deemed necessary by a moderator, please bear this in mind when making requests. Most requests for sales will be ignored.

the new AJ Tracey at #20 was pretty decent

Yes

Very odd to skip Selena.

This is a very 2000-style chart run for Harry Styles...

Very odd to skip Selena.

I assume it's because they'll be playing Lose You to Love Me later and don't want Selena overkill when it's only a 1 hour show!

Posted by: dobbo 27th October 2019, 06:12 PM

Oh I had no idea she had 2 songs set to enter! Fair enough then.

No it's okay! It's my own fault for being unprepared for a change but as a heads up, all first look chat will now take place in the Friday Chart Predictions thread! I should be around to update post 2 as we go along every week.

Remember Adventure of a Lifetime "only" debuted at #14 too! There's still a chance.

Orphans hasn't left much of an impression on me but then Adventure never did either and that was huge, so that's definitely no indicator of potential kink.gif Lose Control on the other hand is growing with each play! Much better than Piece of Your Heart even though it's not that far removed.

Posted by: Djcheekymagpie 27th October 2019, 06:19 PM

Wounded class other Selena Gomez climb kanye west must be in top 10

This Coldplay song sounds so generically Coldplay...

Orphans is very disappointing, much of the same but slightly worst than before...

This is really growing on me now! Love Becky's vocal trills.

Posted by: Bjork 27th October 2019, 06:22 PM

I still think anyday now HH is gonna put Tiesto/Mabel into their top #3 and then the song will finally explode
it's still surprisingly low in there, considering it's Mabel

Posted by: mic1812 27th October 2019, 06:23 PM

Why is Riton not top 10 with this yet. Such a travesty. Probably never going to now this week what with the oncoming kanye west 3 songs allowed in

Posted by: danG 27th October 2019, 06:25 PM

oh pleased to see Coldplay top 20, didn’t expect that given its Spotify position.

Posted by: dobbo 27th October 2019, 06:26 PM

Meh, would rather this was behind all of Lose Control, God Is A Dancer & This Is Real in the pecking order from the rare 'Dance Songs allowed to reach the top 10' jukebox.

could do with a brand new Lewis Capaldi single, bit tired of Bruises and the album, hope the re-release has a new single

The ending is pretty cool and standout but yeah this doesn't lay a glove anywhere near Sicko Mode.

Bruises I would have to say is my least fave of Capaldi's top 40s :/

Posted by: JosephStyles 27th October 2019, 06:36 PM

I like HIGHEST IN THE ROOM too! First thing of Travis Scott's that I've found noteworthy really.

Bear in mind he likely only has 1 day of streaming included in this update, and the album didn't come out until Friday afternoon!

Posted by: danG 27th October 2019, 06:38 PM

I'm guessing the lack of Kanye West is due to the fact his album got released late in the day on Friday and there'll be missing Saturday streams. He should easily fill his quota of top 20 singles by tomorrow's update.

Posted by: Bjork 27th October 2019, 06:41 PM

so Lizzo/Ari is top 5 I imagine

I strongly disagree with this, I found her album disappointing and really quite shouty overall sad.gif but her top 40 hits have been great!

Posted by: Bjork 27th October 2019, 06:51 PM

I wouldn't mind Ride It going to ACR

Posted by: Bjork 27th October 2019, 06:54 PM

crazy how well Selena is doing, hope she keeps the #2

excellent song, her best yet, you can see the Julia Michaels hand in the writing and at some points I feel like she's gonna start singing Issues
but it's a gorgeous song with a killer melody and great lyrics

Posted by: JosephStyles 27th October 2019, 06:56 PM

Love new Selena, so pleased she's as high as #2!! Crazy to think of how high she's looking to debut after never getting higher than #7 before ohmy.gif

Posted by: Bjork 27th October 2019, 06:58 PM

I didn't mind Dance Monkey but now I'm really Team Selena and hope somehow Dance Monkey gets dethroned soon

Posted by: lewistgreen 27th October 2019, 07:05 PM

Definitely here for Selena to get #1 soon. Dance Monkey is awful

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 27th October 2019, 07:27 PM

OMG, so Lizzo's looking like a definite top 10. dance.gif It'd be a dream if she could hold her current position.

It feels like it's been such a long hard slog for her to achieve this, I'm so happy for her.

Posted by: SKOB 27th October 2019, 08:17 PM

Is Kanye not being in top 20 a mistake? Surely 2 days at #7 and #2 on Spotify should be enough.

Is Kanye not being in top 20 a mistake? Surely 2 days at #7 and #2 on Spotify should be enough.

Remember the midweeks are always a day behind on streaming data, so Kanye's only really had a matter of hours on Friday afternoon/evening. I expect he's not far off though.

Posted by: Botchia 27th October 2019, 09:04 PM

Yes Selena *.* Really hope she can hold onto at least top 3 by the end of the week!

Posted by: dandy* 27th October 2019, 09:06 PM

Wow I wasn't expecting to see Lizzo anywhere near that high ohmy.gif

Posted by: Bréxit 27th October 2019, 09:26 PM

I am surprised that Kanye has nothing in the top 20 already, obviously he had less time than others but even so he was higher up on Spotify with a handful of songs from just 7 hours than AJ Tracey was from a full 24 hours. Am sure he'll show up decently high in tomorrow's update anyway. Wow at how high Lizzo is (from such a pointless remix that adds basically nothing to the song lol but it's done its job x), also nice to see Coldplay top 20 at the moment, should be comfortably guaranteed a top 40 debut.

Posted by: Glenn 69 27th October 2019, 10:49 PM

Take it Lizzo being this high is down to the X Factor boost so she will probably drop as the week goes on?

Posted by: Bréxit 27th October 2019, 10:51 PM

It's because of the Ariana Grande remix (XF won't have hurt it ofc but it'd be a fairly minimal impact)

From OCC:

Stereophonics are leading the race for this week’s UK Number 1 album.

The Welsh group’s eleventh studio album Kind tops the Official Chart Update and leads the nearest competition by 14,000 chart sales. Kind has scored the most physical sales and digital downloads across the weekend and is on course to become the band’s seventh UK Number 1 album.

Rick Astley sits at Number 2 with his new greatest hits collection The Best of Me, ahead of James Blunt with Once Upon A Mind at Number 3, on track to be his highest charting album in six years. Kanye West’s eighth LP Jesus Is King is at Number 4 currently, ahead of Pony, the major label debut from Hampshire indie pop singer Rex Orange County at Number 5.

Posted by: SKOB 28th October 2019, 06:06 PM

Surprised that Kanye isn't #2 tbh, sales must be pretty good!

Posted by: Bréxit 28th October 2019, 06:09 PM

Depending on how close it is I presume Kanye could catch up to #2/3 over the week as he obviously has far more reliance on streams than Rick and James. Stereophonics definitely coming for #1 as expected though.

Posted by: pippa 28th October 2019, 06:19 PM

Stereophonics leading the pack is no surprise.
I would greatly welcome Rick Astley and James Blunt holding their current positions at number 2 and 3.
Selena Gomez, must stay top 5 to secure a first for her.

Until a chart mod is available, MW report is in

QUOTE
The Official Charts Company Midweek Sales Flash is in, and Kanye West is making an impact with new record Jesus Is King.

With 7,663 sales – missing Sunday’s streaming data – the rapper’s ninth album is currently at No.4. In the singles chart, West has three tracks in the Top 20, the highest of which is Follow God (9,900 sales). A further eight tracks from Jesus Is King are ‘starred out’ of the list.

Ahead of West in the albums chart, The Stereophonics begin the week in top spot with Kind (22,037 sales), while Rick Astley’s The Best Of Me (7,945 sales) is in second place. James Blunt’s Once Upon A Mind (7,945 sales) is at No.3 and Rex Orange County’s debut set Pony (7,480 sales) completes the Top 5.

Tones And I is off to a flyer in the singles chart, as Dance Monkey (26,546 sales) begins the week in top spot. Regard’s Ride It (13,700 sales), Selena Gomez’s Lose You To Love Me (13,252 sales) and Lizzo’s Good As Hell (10,614 sales) complete the Top 5.

yay great sales for Stereophonics, but disappointing for Rick Astley and James Blunt... I knew Rick Astley was not gonna do the big figures some predicted... looks like Kanye will be #2 come Friday

even more disappointing for Cigarettes after Sex, they've played non-stop live in all festivals in the world for the last couple years,
though they were more popular by now :/

looks like Selena is gonna be #3, which is a great start in the top 40, hopefully she can make #1 in the coming weeks

Posted by: Bréxit 28th October 2019, 06:52 PM

A typo or are Rick and James really on exactly the same sales? thinking.gif either way it is very close so #2 should definitely be achievable for Kanye, Rex OC might have some chance of overtaking one or both of them as well maybe although he'll probably be more frontloaded than Kanye.

Yay for Niall being top 40 today, hope he will hang on there all week.

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 28th October 2019, 06:52 PM

That's about what I expected for Cigarettes After Sex, I think they're bigger internationally.

Posted by: pippa 28th October 2019, 07:10 PM

Dermot Kennedy
Elbow
Foals
James Arthur

All falling at a very fast rate.

A (very) hypothetical question, but a) if we consider Kanye West's album to be a Christian/gospel album, and b) that it rises to #1 in the album chart, when was the last time (if ever) that an explicitly Christian album reached the #1 in the album chart? I'm not sure if Stormzy's last album qualifies, although it did have a few tracks with the general "Jesus is Groovy" theme.

Posted by: Bjork 28th October 2019, 07:35 PM

sure Stormzy doesn't count, just having a choir in a song doesn't make it christian music
no clue if it's ever happened in the UK
but of course it depends on your definition of christian music... cos I remember reading some lists in the past and they included U2 for instance, which imho is zero christian music...

Posted by: The Hit Parade 28th October 2019, 09:13 PM

I wouldn't count all the U2 albums as Christian music but I think The Joshua Tree qualifies.
Obviously October is their most Christian album but not a UK chart-topper.

Have to say I’m shocked at Dermot’s continued descent down the charts, I thought it would stabilize after its 1-14 drop but it’s showing no signs of doing so. Considering how big ‘Outnumbered’ has been and the fact it’s such a radio friendly track I thought it would have helped the album a lot more.

Not at all surprised to see Rick Astley so high up. I heard his new single on Radio 2 today actually, it's a good 'un. I loved his '50' album he bought out a couple of years ago too.

Hopefully Niall and The Script can retain top 40 berths by week's end.

They shouldn't do - last time I checked the rules it specifically said that a live version of an album couldn't be combined with the original version.

The entry at 93 is a double CD with both the studio and live albums, which can't be combined with either of the separate items.

Posted by: Bréxit 29th October 2019, 09:28 PM

Yeah, live albums don't ever get combined with the original versions.

I wonder how many live versions of studio album have ever charted? I remember Van Morrison's live version of Astral Weeks charted before the original.

Posted by: Sleepy Rollo 30th October 2019, 12:00 AM

Live album are generally fanbase only purchases and dont appeal outside of that market.
Robbie Williams did have a double platinum seller with his Live album when he was at the peak of his career which is a one off.

Unless of course Dua Lipa manages a #1 debut next week.

Kanye West may take the Number 2 position with his increase.
Niall Horan, has improved by 2 places, Top 40 is looking very possible on Friday.

A 75k+ opening for Dua would be pretty amazing. I don't really see it, but could see her maybe landing in the No.3-6 region with around 30-40k?

Hard to predict as Swan Song underperformed, but then that was a different beast being a standalone from a film soundtrack (and not that amazing).

Posted by: danG 30th October 2019, 05:16 PM

Posted by: Jordan Lee 30th October 2019, 05:26 PM

I can see Dua at least debuting top 10. Likely within the top 5.

Looking at how well Selenas doing this week I think Dua should do better than that as UK wise (and UK wise alone!) she’s a bigger name here. Aside from Adele she’s our biggest female and she does well on streaming too.

She could have another huge smash on her hands but athe least she’ll do a Taylor Swift ME! (But that’s only if it’s poorly received).

Posted by: Bréxit 30th October 2019, 05:28 PM

I'd be extremely surprised if Dua managed to debut at #1 even if there wasn't such a strong incumbent tbh.

Kanye closing most of the gap in the albums chart now, should definitely be on course for #2 (although likely on lower sales than 'ye'). 'Follow God' looking like it'll be the highest charting song from a Kanye album since 'Stronger' getting to #1 in 2007 though which seems pretty crazy considering the very muted reception this album is getting! (Wording that carefully because of course 'I Love It' got to #3 but ended up only being for Lil Pump's album, as did the non-album single 'FourFiveSeconds', but still 'Follow God' will likely only be one place below those two).

Glad that 'Orphans' hasn't been collapsing too hard over the week, hope it'll hang onto a debut in the mid 20s.

Posted by: Darren1905 30th October 2019, 06:35 PM

Dua Lipa at highest will be debut low Top 5.

Posted by: Bjork 30th October 2019, 06:46 PM

did a quick search at the BPI for live albums that are at least multi-platinum and found these.

Phil Collins - Serious Hits Live = Platinum x 4
U2 - Live under a red blood sky = Platinum x 3
Simple Minds - Live in the city of Light = Platinum x 2
Robbie William - Live at Knewborth = Platinum x 2
Beatles - Live at the BBC = Platinum x 2

just shows how popular was Phil Collins in the late 90s, he really was the male-Adele ohmy.gif

Unplugged by The Corrs must be up there too, it had a great chart run for a live album. Such a good record too, I still regularly listen to songs like No Frontiers and Radio, which was way better than the studio version on In Blue.

I wasn't counting unplugged albums as live, thought mostly they're like in a studio and acoustic versions but it's not live in concert in a proper venue
but if you count them, checking BPI, these are the multiplatinum unplugged albums
Eric Clapton - Unplugged = 4 x platinum
Nirvana - Unplugged in new York = 3 x platinum
The Corrs - Unplugged = 2 x platinum

Posted by: The Hit Parade 30th October 2019, 08:57 PM

If you don't count Unplugged albums (Which I would) then you can't really count The Beatles Live At The BBC either (especially as most of it isn't in front of an audience).

The popularity of the Phil Collins album may have been enhanced by the fact that he hadn't released a Hits compilation at that point.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever 30th October 2019, 11:27 PM

The corrs unplugged was/is a brilliant album, they are so much better live than studio.

Posted by: JCR 31st October 2019, 02:49 AM

The Motörhead live record ‘No Sleep ‘Til Hammersmith’ also went to number one in the UK album chart in June 1981, and is one of the better live records.

In addition, Judas Priest’s live record ‘Unleashed in the East’ went platinum in America.

Posted by: Bjork 31st October 2019, 06:53 AM

there are many live albums that have charted and many that have gone platinum, just posted the multi-platinum to see the biggest sellers
but many artists have had platinum (300,000 copies) albums, Take That, Dire Straits, Busted, Biffy Clyro etc etc

for me, depends on the unplugged, but many are just albums made in the studio without anybody present and basically with electric guitars replaced by acoustic guitars... that doesn't make it a live album, like performing in a stadium in front of thousands...

These ‘Best of/Gold’ releases are proving to be really popular - have to hand it to the record company behind them, comprehensive mid priced triple disc releases - they could be trickle sellers for years. The Bay City Rollers one has been progressing in every update.

A bit late replying, but Liverpool band The Christians had a number one album tongue.gif

On the subject of live albums, Depeche Mode released a live version of their number one album Songs Of Faith And Devotion but it didn't chart. The Who Live At Leeds did pretty well.

The weirdest example is perhaps that of Peter Frampton. He released four studio albums that didn't reach the chart at all. He then released a live album which did very well in the UK and was huge in the US where it remains one of the best-selling live albums of all time. He also got his first UK hit singles with tracks from that album. His next studio album just about made the chart but all subsequent releases (including another live album) have failed to trouble the charts.

I don't fancy them because they have too much filler, songs which weren't hits and album tracks. Prefer a one disc concise hits collection.
