Top 40 Commentary

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, this week's #1 is a new entry from Calvin Harris, alongside Rag'n'Bone Man. 'Giant' gives Calvin his 8th #1 single in Thermo's hot hits, which officially follows up an unlucky #2 in 'Promises' (being released in the same week as Jess Glynne's 'All I Am') though he also scored a #5 hit in 'I Found You' as the secondary artist to Benny Blanco. This #1 total includes six songs with Calvin as lead artist, as well as his production credits on Cheryl's 'Call My Name' and Florence + The Machine's 'Spectrum'. 'Giant' also is the third song of his to debut at #1 following 'This Is What You Came For' and 'One Kiss'. As for Rag'n'Bone Man, it becomes his first hit here as the rest of his output made absolutely no chart impact.

Last week's #1 'Nothing Breaks Like A Heart' would have remained there if not for Calvin inevitably pushing it off. It drops a place to #2, as does former #1 'Happy Now' down to #3. Gareth Emery's 'Take Everything' climbs to #4 to become his fifth top five hit, and at #5 is... a secret! It would be too obvious what I confirmed to this month's BJSC otherwise, so it has been redacted for this week. Meanwhile there are no more entries in the rest of the top ten, with the only climber being 'Javelin', up three to #7.

Coincidentally in the same week Calvin Harris releases we also got a new release from Sam Smith, who charts in his own right for the first time since 2015 as nothing from his second era charted. 'Dancing With A Stranger' debuts at #22, becoming his ninth top 40 hit. It is also the first top 40 hit for Normani (excluding her hits as part of Fifth Harmony, and despite having had two songs with Calvin Harris, as the songs were disappointing by Calvin's standards) who duets with Sam on the track.

Bali Bandits are a Dutch EDM duo who get their first top 40 hit this week as 'Lucky Chances' is the week's largest gainer in the overall chart. The song features KSHMR who gets his 14th top 40 hit (excluding his hits as part of The Cataracs) and charts at #30.

Also getting his first top 40 hit this week is Norwegian trance DJ Orjan Nilsen, as 'Love Rush In' rises to #31. He previously was unlucky enough to have three top 50 hits with none of them going top 40, but that now changes, in part thanks to its appearance on Armin van Buuren's latest A State of Trance Top 20 compilation (this is also responsible for a few of this week's climbs and entries lower down - including the 10 year old 'The Longest Road' at #44 which is the 'classic bonus track').
