'Secret (Take You Home)' became one of the most talked about tracks from Body Language, receiving a lot of attention from critics and fans, specifically for its two rap verses. It split opinions at the time but the love seems to have overpowered the hate nowadays, with many believing it was a missed single opportunity. Where do you stand on the track? Should it have been a single? Does Kylie trump Debbie Harry and Madonna for the most ICONIC rap in pop?! |

I reckon if the album had been better received, they may have felt more confident with going with this. I know it's liked by fans but I think they'd have been worried it wouldn't have been accepted by the public, not when Madonna's American Life rap went down so badly not that long before. Red Blooded Woman, which was tipped to do big things, couldn't resurrect the album outside of returning it to the Top 40 for one week, so I think they wanted to play it safe by releasing a more radio-friendlier Chocolate (even though this one seems to split opinion so much more nowadays).
I think 'Secret' definitely sounds like a single so it would have been nice if the record company just went with it, given 'Chocolate' didn't actually help the album out anyway. I do really like 'Chocolate' as well though, so I couldn't really say I'd want one or the other and there's not really enough room to have had them both released - I can see why Ultimate Kylie was released when it was so couldn't push that back either. |

I feel a fourth single its something they should have proceeded with as it would have gave the album a sales lift.

I like the song but for me it’s definately in the category of album filler rather than hit single.

I think this could have definitely worked as a single, remember at the time wanting it to follow 'Slow', and was even convinced it would, but didn't happen and instead we got 'Red Blooded Woman', (wasn't keen on it at first, but totally grew on me over time), even 'Chocolate' is ok (still not one of my faves). Getting off track here 'Secret' could have definitely worked and maybe should have been given a chance in the America, where 'RBW' did nothing, this could have had a killer video like all the others from this era and made the era more complete, instead of the abrupt ending it had.
Kylie's rap is awesome on this, much better than Madonna did on that awful 'AL' single, its cute when Kylie does it and doubt that she would have received even half the flack Madonna did. The song is a brilliant standout moment, the sample of 'I Wonder If I Take You Home' by Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam works really well and keeps up the sophisticated beat with the rest of the album, and plus its probably one of the most memorable tracks on the album. I've recently just added this back to my Kylie playlist, and I'll say it again this SHOULD have been a single, as to me it sounds like one. Definite lost opportunity. |

Would it have done equally as well, better or derailed the campaign? |

No and I would be no for any of the songs as I'd say a 4th single prob would have been lucky to make top 20 which back then was bad.

Given the "fierce competition" amongst Britney Spears, Kylie and Beyonce, Secret is the only song that is comparable with Toxic (but still no match against Crazy in love).

It may have connected better than chocolate, I prefer chocolate myself but in general it may have been the better choice.

I can't see this doing that well as a single to be honest. Its a good track but the urban sound might alienate wider interest.

The Urban vibe i also feel would have put people off and Chocolate was still the right choice for the third single.

I am not a big fan of Red Blooded Woman but it was the correct choice for 2nd single.
It performed reasonably well and helped people respond to the album. |

'Red Blooded Woman' was a great choice as the follow up to 'Slow', and think 'Secret' should have followed in the summer time and could have easily been another potential hit, or at least been chosen as the follow up for the American market as 'RBW' did next to nothing over there apart from a mere #24 peak on the Dance chart.
'Secret' had more potential for that market, it could have definitely done more (maybe make a dent on the Top 100, or even the bubbling under chart). Then would have had 'Chocolate' as the 4th and final single and in around September time, then still have 'I Believe In You' for X-Mas 2004. So if the era went like this = 'SLOW' - Nov '03 *ALBUM RELEASE 'Red Blooded Woman' - March '04 'Secret (Take You Home)' - June '04 [Feb for US Market] 'Chocolate' - Sept '04 This would have felt more complete in my opinion. |
