Some pretty random stuff on here! Great to see ( ), Puzzle, Immersion and Last Night On Earth having their certifications improved recently (and also + and Mylo Xyloto) and 'Skying' getting certified.

I don't see why the BPI wait for their sales numbers from the record companies rather than getting them from the OCC. They are always so behind.

Moves like Jagger is a million seller, the site shows no certification eligibility. Nothing for We Found Love even though its well past Platinum.

The label has to pay to get them certified so it only happens when the label asks for it.

And that is fine but they should list the award anyway and let them pay for the damn fancy disks themselves. Its just annoying. In the end, what is the point of an award that can be bought? By all means buy the trophy.

"We Found Love" is currently certified as Gold, The BPI database has one flaw in that you have to enter the artist credit exactly as it is held in the database, in this case it is Rihanna Ft Calvin Harris. You can search under the title of the track though.

Rihanna's label have been slow to apply for an update to the Gold certification (which was awarded on November 11, 2011), they usually apply for a certification soon after she passes the required sales threshold.

Just to clarify. The record companies do not pay the BPI to have their records certified. The right to apply for official certifications is part of the membership package (which they have already paid for).

But they are expected to pay a private company (there at least 2 providing this service) for official presentation discs to be given to the artist, the artist's manager, the producer (these days there may be many of these while one or two used to suffice), the record company itself and, for the last 10 years or so, anyone else who the record company feels deserves one for the contribution they have made to the record's success. And this is where the real cost of the awards lies.

Nice to see so many updates happening in the space of a month. I emailed them a few months back to ask why Eminem and Rihanna's 'Love the Way You Lie' still remain uncertified, but they didn't even have the decency to reply. It's just irritating that so many big sellers, and artists who have some certified, some not certified singles are not given the certification. Wish they'd be a bit quicker with it all, after all certifications are part of the job at BPI.

It's up to the record companies to request the certification. The job of the BPI is to keep track of them by updating their website and informing Music Week.

Im not really bothered about the BPI certs cos as mentioned the artist/management have to pay for and request them to be released rather than them getting them as a reward. There are so many songs that have sold 200k/400k etc for definate but have not been verified by BPI so until BPI sort out their procedures and stances of releasing certificates/sales i have no interest as they are very misleading.

It's actually quite handy for some older stuff that's hard to track and its nice to see a few old albums above pick up discs but thanks to our amazing YTD threads were all somewhat better informed mostly these days (I pray VCs computer never crashes).

Good thread though if you could keep it up certainly easier to access it on here with all the other stuff, cheers ;-)

It's such a shame the certificates (singles, in particular) have gone to the dogs over the past 7 or 8 years. I have the Virgin book of British hit singles from a couple of years ago and it's great to flick through and get a rough idea of what an artist's individual tracks have sold as the BPI awards are now listed. But as so few have been granted in the past while, they're not going to show up in upcoming editions of the book - such a shame :-(

It's up to the record companies to certify that THEY have sold at least the minimum number of copies to qualify for the award, not for the BPI to assume that they might have sold enough.
