December 29th marked 30 years since the release of Kylie's worldwide breakthrough hit 'I Should Be So Lucky'. The story of the Stock Aitken Waterman team forgetting about Kylie travelling to meet them and having to write up a song in 40 minutes is well documented, but that didn't stop them creating one of their biggest successes. 'I Should Be So Lucky' went to #1 in Australia and the UK, finishing in the Top 5 best selling singles of 1988 in both countries. The song has been subject to strong criticism, but it's hard to deny that most fans have very fond memories of its release and its video, complete with a curly-haired Kylie giggling away in a bubble bath, and the song remains a constant presence on Kylie's tour setlists. What's everyone's thoughts on the song? Any memories? Favourite performances? |

I’m not really a fan of the song and think it is actually one of her weakest, however the video is cute and I appreciate what it did for her career. Another I’m not keen on is especially for you which is basically her two biggest hits of the eighties lol

I am also not keen on the single, but the Showgirl and Kiss Me Once live versions are brilliant !

I enjoy it when I listen to it, but I never really go back to it or even think about it really.
It was number one on my first birthday! |

Not great. Stock Aitken and Waterman's production got too poppy and less dancey by that stage. Their best production imo was their first one for Dead Or Alive, You Spin Me Round (Like A Record).
Kylie's vocal and the song are OK though. |

I Should Be So Lucky, its very special, it is what gave us the musical Kylie. While the loco motion was the start of it all for Australia, it was this that launched her music career in style for the UK.
I for many reasons put I Should Be So Lucky and Spinning Around in the same category in that they were hugely important releases that had they not been the hits they were Kylie's career would have been so different. I Should Be So Lucky had it flopped would most likely have ended her music career and Spinning Around had it flopped we have never had the huge era that started and followed from there. |

Thinking about it, it's quite interesting how her huge "second wave" lasted exactly 10 years (beginning at 'Spinning Around' and ending at 'All The Lovers'). That's not a bad run!

Tour Performances
Disco in Dream/The Hitman Roadshow Enjoy Yourself Tour Let's Get To It Tour Intimate & Live Tour KylieFever2002 Showgirl Tour Showgirl Homecoming Tour KylieX2008 (one-off encore) Aphrodite: Les Folies Tour (Japan only) Kiss Me Once Tour A few performances missing but you can still clearly see this is a tour favourite. I like that you use this song to document how she's grown over the course of her career, becoming more self-assured and more at ease with the audience, knowing what they want. Intimate & Live seems to be a particular turning point. |

I still love this song, and everything she would do with SAW.
I bought the 7'' back then, and it was the first 12'' single I ever bought (along with Tiffany - I Think We're Alone Now). I waited for the 12'' single(s) to leave the chart, so I could get them cheaper from the bargain bin, as I didn't really know what a 12'' single was, or if my record player could play one ! |

It's clearly very of its time and Kylie's grown as an artist and had so many more 'technically' good songs, but I do really love 'I Should Be So Lucky'. It's a great slice of 80s bubblegum pop, really feel-good and great to sing along to. I have strong memories of the video when watching the music channels as a kid in the early 00s with that bubble bath scene and the innocent giggle particularly sticking in mind.
