Would it be fair to say overall, taking everything into account that Joanne was a more successful era than ARTPOP?
Its had better longevity on the charts than what ARTPOP did
Yea it's hard to compare... ARTPOP's shelf life was so short though.. People are still buzzing about Joanne a year later so it's different.
The whole ARTPOP era was so messy and I even feel sad about it now outside the great album it spawned.
Separated into a new thread because I think it'll be interesting to discuss and compare properly!
I think ARTPOP was bigger if I'm honest but I think that might just be because of the singles. Despite only being moderate hits, I heard Applause and DWUW a lot on the radio (especially the latter). Theres not much in it though when you consider the Superbowl and the documentary (although can you really count the SB as part of the Joanne era? She only performed one song from it anyway)
Absolute flop, just like Artpop.
She is over as a huge star.
For the album as a whole, it definitely has surpassed ARTPOP, not from the high-coverage promo (SuperBowl LI), but more from the cathartic essence of the album as a whole. It was Gaga returning to her roots, and people found a sense of genuity from it, which allowed them to connect with her more, something ARTPOP couldn't do. This led to greater longevity in the long run.
I could probably say the same thing about "The Cure" as well, despite it not performing as well as previous singles.
As an overall era, I would consider it a greater success than ARTPOP. I mean taking every aspect of it into account and not just the album sales (even though they're not that much lower than ARTPOP's anyway, right?). I think it underwent an impressive recovery after it started off so disastrously with 'Perfect Illusion', her profile and goodwill seemed to be restored a bit by the end.
*edit - I'm in agreement with what Cody said.
Definitely agree with Cody. Particularly with Million Reasons, it has reached out to many non-fans and got them enjoying Gaga again. The Cure again did a fabulous job of that.
ARTPOP was very fan based and against the public grain. Applause and DWUW were big radio smashes but that's probably mainly because of the massive BTW era that came before it.
Also without a doubt, I'd say this era has been a lot more organic and exciting to follow.
I think this era has kind of changed opinion of Gaga and has shown her for who she really is what she is and has shown non fans / monsters how passionate she is and that she’s a real talent. The documentary has been well received and she’s getting positive praise from media, celebrities and people who weren’t really Big fans before hand.
I think she’s in a position now where with A star is born coming earlier this new found praise will hopefully continue. I feel like she still has it in her to really slay and smash it with new material. The only thing that both ARTPOP and Joanne lacked were a huge single and both albuns (in my opinion) had these but they weren’t pushed as singles. Million Reasons performed very well not necessarily peak wise but sales wise it did great but Dancin In Circles would’ve slayed as a single!
All in All though I do think Joanne will be seen as being more successful and has been more popular among the General public than what ARTPOP was.
Local pop station played Million Reasons couple of days ago after praising the film and and raving that everyone must watch it.. Nothing on ARTPOP could match that impact in 2014 any more so that era sort of came and went. Also The Cure was very well received although it's probably one of her weakest singles in my books.
Now to think of it, Perfect Illusion was definitely *wrong* choice for first single commercially. However it is an exciting song and thus was great way to launch the new Gaga era which ended up being a total departure from the flamboyant over-the-top Gaga.
Wish they would push Joanne (the song) for AC radio now.
I think Joanne would be a mediocre sized hit if they pushed it in the US and Radio 2 would probably support it here. It's the sort of song that would shift albums too but I don't really mind if the era ends with no more singles as long as the tour concludes positively!
Joanne would FLOP
Sorry but these songs are not good.
I am in the process of updating chart runs and sales info in the main (pinned) threads, but until then let's compare:
UK
Chart runs
ARTPOP: 1-9-24-32-29-35-26-24-31-37-44-60-62-64-68-98
Joanne: 3-14-22-41-58-71-43-43-46-33-38-41-51-57-88-11-27-40-72-87-x-73
Weeks on chart
ARTPOP: 16
Joanne: 21
ARTPOP has obviously sold more but I think in the UK Joanne has done better (and it's top 100 as we speak so should continue)
Need to locate US chart runs but no idea where they are lmao ~
