Hoping for a top 10 or 20 from a optimistic viewpoint. I think bottom 10 would be a sucky way to end the year and ruin a book ending of what could be fab results.

Hype for Apashe! I’ve already got a few vocal supporters which is exactly what you want from the whole process! I think we’ll be top 20, but would love a top 10 to finish off the year! I just feel it might be getting a bit over predicted as it’s very marmite and I’m sure lots will snub it! I’d just like to finish above Little Jinder (17th) which is my second best performance in 2020 so far!

Okay, I pretty much know everything already but I've kept my mouth about my odds for so long, so here's what I predicted on Day 1:
- Winner contenders: Caerfyrddia, Scherzland, FSR Rontvia, Rolloland, Aeroche (I put Caerfyrddia as my top pick)
- Who will do the best of the K-pop entries?: POPHub
- Will the Xmas entries qualify?: one will, one won't (both ended up qualifying)
- Where will Cor Lupus place?: 14th

(I also said Flynnonda would come top 20 and Hendinia would do well enough to get #1 on the YTD at the last minute so I guess we'll see which manifestations ended up working)

Hello Cody! Firstly thank you for hosting one of the best contests of the year, it's been a very good end to the BJSC year! I've rearranged my votes many times over the course of the week as there were quite a few faves but in the end I settled on giving max points to Tartford with the beautiful track from the Moon Safari album - I usually downgrade things like that but this one is too gorgeous for that. The rest of the medal positions go to Brade this time around with Jade in particular almost snatching the gold with a track that I can see myself returning to many times... whilst Bré sent one of the most ridiculously catchy and camp things I think I've ever heard in this contest

Good evening one and all, thanks to our hosts Cor Lupus for their hosting and rounding out a strong year for Persephonia, here's hoping our final entry of the year will continue our run of good results

It feels like Jadakissnia and Skall end up as our top 2 in BJSC votes on a pretty frequent basis, so why not add another to the pile? Jadakissnia round out a year where they've been in the top 4 in our final votes eight (!) times by notching up their third 18 from us this year with their Belarusian post-punk perfection which takes their total medal position stats from us to 8 18s, 9 15s and 7 13s. This leaves Skall picking up another silver medal with their hundredth entry throwing us back to early 90s shoegaze - they have still only got our top marks in a final twice (the last time being Phoria in BJSC 65) but they have now got our silver medal 5 times since then (6 in total) as well as receiving our bronze medal 4 times, and as ever with Skall there's an asterisk attached as they quite often DNQ with songs we would have given high points in the final, thankfully not the case this month of course. Our top 3 this month is completed by a very welcome comeback nation Cumulonimbia with their witch house flavoured entry marking their first appearance in our medal positions since we gave 15 points to Kevin Abstract in BJSC 98 - this is surprisingly actually the only time they've placed in our top 3 of a final before though they've been not far off several other times. Utopia get our 12 points two months in a row as they end 2020 nearly as strong as they started it with a super addictive electronic earworm, and Fljótavík pick up 11 points to round out our top 5 with an excellent throwback dance entry.

Most of the rest of our votes are more of the same countries we've been giving points to a lot recently but a shoutout to Pagasa who receive their first ever points from us (would have been earlier if their better entries didn't keep DNQing etc.), dancing their way to 5 points from us this month. Hooray!

AGOG that I finished in the top 20 this time never in a million years did I think this would place higher than 'ISAE' last month - I'm even more perplexed about what BJSC wants from me now to make this even better, 19th is a unique position!! I needed 11th, 15th and 19th in the 11-20 zone, yay thanks so much to everyone who pointed this, I will never understand how it not only qualified but placed top 20, but certainly not complaining <3 squeezes in as my 5th best result of the year.

ELATED that my 18 won as well ahhhh congratulations Frank so many gems in that top 10 actually - more in line with my taste than usual! It's a shame that Leww and Bray's entries couldn't be up there too, like a lot of odds suggested, but both will be slaying in the EOY top 5 anyway *.*

A quick scoreboard audit this month as Cody's final scoreboard does actually match mine entirely so no changes to be made! (The other tiebreaks btw are 19 votes to 18 for Holland-Oats/Vülkyria and 16 votes to 15 for Republic of Adonia/Terra Avium).

Congrats Frank on a second win, that Scherzland surge from the DNQ voters was really looking scary for a moment but thrilled at 'Wetlands' still ultimately clutching it out, easily one of the best winners of the year.

Also appears it will have been insanely close between the EOY top 3 (the results of this contest have gone Aeroche > Hendinia > Altyr exactly as I predicted so it just came down to the margins) but Altyr have just about held on so congrats to John!!

Some interesting things to note about the semis and final:
- it was WILD watching both in real time. During the semis we had a few countries in both semis fighting for that qualification and it came down to literally the LAST VOTE.
- idk who Jake should blame for his DNQ: himself for pointing Numayania (possibly shooting himself in the foot) or Math's late votes for pushing Quintessa and Trifoski above him! Why So Sirius pushed Altyr above the line in the other semi!
- the finals were just as wild as I saw Scherzland take the lead a couple times when I was inputting everything and it literally came down to the last vote as well! Jacob was the last voter and pushed Land of DW to the top spot! (he also pushed me out of the top 10, I'll be taking that into account later) I think if Jack had voted Scherzland could have won. That's how intense it was.

YAY, amazing, FINALLY a winner I really love, has to be the best one this year (I've admittedly forgot a lot of them already, but I don't think I've given that high to another winner this year), it wasn't far from my 18 and could've easily been there! A beautiful song and so pleased to see BJSC into this new age kind of thing, congrats Frank!

Would've been nice to be a little higher, but I suppose for what was ultimately something I sent as a 'ooh I wonder what plug will make of this', it could've gone worse. Additional fun Scherzland stat: they got 8 18s in the end which is the most for any song in 2020! (Smith & Thell, St. Lucia and EVERGLOW were previously tied for the most of the year each with 7 - impressive that Claudia Valentina outdid them all considering that unlike all of those she did not have any previous BJSC hits to her name thus not having an inbuilt 'fanbase' to speak of!) Looks to have been a strong month for countries getting new peaks, as well as Scherzland that's also a new high for both Rolloland and POPHub (the latter being in the top 10 for the first time nevermind the top 5), plus Why So Sirius just about beating the finish of their previous qualifier as well, congrats to all of those!

Aside from the great winner the results this month aren't the most aligned to my taste, only voted for four of the top 10 and two of those were in the lower end of my points, fab anyway to see FLJ making the top 10 (I thought for a moment the other week it could be a win contender but I guess it was a little too niche for that in the end) as well as Lookylion getting another great result and Klum Rep not underperforming for once! And although I didn't quite vote for it I am rather pleased that Tartford got a top 10 too, would never have called that doing so well! Capulets being yet another PJSC winner that's ended up in the 2-5 range here (while Indila remains the only song to have won both contests), need to tally up how many times that's happened as I think it's quite a few times now.

A decent enough showing for Utopia though a shame they fell a little short of the top 10 after my ~oh so bold~ prediction that they'd be challenging for it. Happy as well to see Caerfyrddia, Aeroche, Aelandor, Cumulonimbia and especially Jadakissnia in the top 20 (Jade conclusively proven to be the master of Belarusian post-punk, leaving Molchat Doma's result in the dust and that despite it coming so close to DNQing, would have been out if I'd even just given it a 10 instead of a 12! although it was pretty comfortably my 12 in the semi so that was never a possibility x) A nice showing for Wholune too, I was surprised at how negative the response to that on plug.dj was so glad to see I wasn't too crazy for being into it Skall also doing relatively decently to get a top 30 hit with this entry so I guess my only real disappointments this month (other than myself but we just about got the EOY top 5 so I won't complain xx) were Kathaldazia and Pagasa who definitely both deserved much better.

Thanks Cody for the hosting, and that rounds out another year of contests now let's form a prayer circle to 2021 wrapping up a little earlier than a week before Christmas Day

After one of my floppiest year getting a win is insane, thank you All so much!
I had 3 potentials this month - after some hours/days I decided that I need a 'win' for a change (not a win, just a 'win', which is basically a safe Q for me), so I ended up NOT sending a batshit crazy song.
Sorry Dan for snatching (and winning with your) January entry, I did know that you like 'Wetlands' (after deciding on it I saw that you posted the video in the dance forum), but I thought it's still worth being a bit cheaper this month.

Great hosting Cody, just casually passing wins to each other this year after UP, I'm down to repeat the same next year

Not too many in the top 10 I voted for, never thought that 'Find Me' could do so well - I liked it quite a lot (when I was 9), but I didn't appreciate it as much as I do now, but I think that the extended version is superior to the Radio/Video edit.

This was such a tense set of results, to think it came down to ONE POINT in the semi as well and I could have DNQd. It’s a shame for Hallelujah as it’s been on heavy rotation chezkm for weeks now, but I guess the non Christmas version might have gone down a little better.

Anyway well done on hosting Cody, thank you to all our voters in this contest and across the year! I’m so pleased that after 10 years in this there’s still lots of firsts (just a shame no 9th place yet).

Congrats, Frank!! 'Wetlands' was a brilliant entry, very majestic! Are we calling it an instrumental winner then? Nice to see either way! And '4:15' is an outstanding runner up, really impressed with all the 18s!

Overall results were a mixed bag, I'm cheering for Quintessa, Aelandor and Hushkanukia in the top 20 and Wholune just narrowly avoiding the bottom half (echoing all of the love for 'Ghost of Christmas Past', what a song!). Vulkyria, Niceland and Numayania deserved much better

I think it happens periodically to lots of entries and I don't think it's exclusively against pop entries. I can remember when Hypocrite won there was a vocal group who didn't like it or understand why it had won... but it's not personal, it just means that they didn't like the track I entered. And the likes of Rollo could take it to heart whenever there is a lot of vocal disdain for his longer entries.

There's just a wide variety of tastes in BJSC and none are better as such than others - but I don't think that means that people shouldn't comment on what they do and don't like?

I mean I could only really see Klumzee and Chez say anything vaguely negative in the thread about Scherzland's entry - and even then Chez was just saying he couldn't recall it. It's no different at all to Cameron dismissing "~out there~ dreary entries" in the above post!

In fairness to Kye though I think it doesn't help the perception of the comments in this thread that there wasn't really much in the way of people supporting his song, it was pretty much only negative and neutral comments (in stark contrast to the actual votes coming in with near universal love towards the end). I can totally get why that wouldn't be the most fun to read and might take a bit of the moment away.

this is becoming a bigger deal than it should be. i made a comment based on (more than 2) comments during the results that were slightly dampening my experience of the contest - i elaborated more in my response to lewis to reflect my position.

to be clear: i haven't taken it to heart + i certainly didn't say that you shouldn't comment on what you like or don't like. i simply asked for a little bit of kindness when expressing opinions as, if they're negative, they're not always that fun to take x

I can understand it can be a little disheartening seeing people be negative to a song that you really love, I don't go out of my way to do it and I apologise if I gave that impression last night, that said, I don't like how this is always an issue, I've seen equal disdain from both 'pop' and 'inspired' sides and it's just a by-product of discussion and people getting a bit caught up in the competition and is not personal. It's the points you get that speak above plug etc., they are the things that are worth your attention!

Just wanted to say that no offense was meant by my comments! Yes as you can imagine based on what I've said, I'm not particularly a fan of the Scherzland entry and struggled to connect with it like others did, my comments were throwaway and not much thought was put into them so I apologise if they did upset as they were not intended in that way. It was more the fact it was doing so well in comparison to other songs I thought would pick up the points from the pop voters (like Hushkanukia for example). I found it bizarre that a song not on my radar at all managed to get 8 12's in the end which is a fantastic result! It's just surprising that's all!

I also think this imbalance in opinion comes from the fact that the 'plug crowd' who have a more alternative leaning taste, are by far the most active in posting and producing BJSC content. Like every single odds post was made by a regular plug attendee and often the comments in the threads are from the same crowd who are the most active in the forum. It's just tricky as a song that doesn't appeal to that crowd will not get vocal love and often surprises in the actual votes once everyone has had a say. This opinion can come across as much more dominant in that respect.

It's tricky to know where the line gets drawn, cause on one hand we all enter this to get good comments and support for our own entries, but we also should respect the fact that not everyone will agree and some may not like your song, I've had it this contest where people have also reacted negatively to my song also but I've not been upset about it as I knew my song was divisive.

Didn't realise I'd write so much, but then again I have opinions to share on this topic!

Amongst my list of qualifiers is a song that got 8 mehs on plug.dj and one that was described as "air" so I definitely agree with the "importance lies with the actual votes" message. I think we all experience these moments but the opinions on your own songs will always be magnified.

I don't even look at plug stats when they're posted these days as they're always wildly out for my entries, even the DNQs rarely do as badly as plug suggests. It's just not the audience for the type of song I typically send. I do remember CXLOE nabbing a surprise runner-up slot and then being ranked as almost everyone's least-favourite runner-up of 2019 the most hypeless medal position of the year x

no apologies are necessary. i'm not sure how else i can elocute that i'm not worried/upset/offended etc - i'm just interested in the discussion!

my entry from last month literally came last on plug, getting 0 woots + an overall muted response - it really doesn't bother me if people don't like the song, it's not actually my song the throwaway comments or not liking the song is fine, it'd be a boring life if we all liked the same thing. nobody is here to gatekeep which genres or songs that you should/shouldn't like, i was just defending my entry. i'm pretty sure i've called you all tasteless in the past!

that said - this is the first time i've mentioned anything of this nature so if it's "always an issue" perhaps a wider discussion should be had?

Btw I'm 100% against posting plug stats, they mean nothing at all, they just make people feel bad. I can 'woot' an entry and end up giving it 0 points and I can 'meh' an entry and again, end up giving it 0 points.
If someone's interested in the results, then they should go to the plug room and check the history, it takes only a minute.

I don't know that I'd say it's 'always an issue' of this kind of opinion imbalance spilling onto the forum itself (it happened with this and to some extent with CXLOE, that's about the only ones I can think of, at least as far as top 3 hits go). I do think it's a bit of a shame though that the genre bias has become so pronounced on plug.dj (maybe it's always been like that to some extent but I definitely think it's become a lot more noticeable in the last couple of years, which is why I no longer post the stats from plug.dj sessions that I host, because it's essentially garbage data that gives completely misleading impressions a lot of the time). The results have month after month shown that the audience for these 'plug-unfriendly' pop songs clearly still exists and in large enough numbers that it can make winner contenders, it just seems to rarely get captured there. But there isn't really any solution to that (other than I suppose emphasising that people should never take plug.dj results with anything less than a heap of salt) as we can't exactly police what kind of people are attracted to the plug sessions!

tl;dr pop hoes don't be afraid to hop on plug.dj from time to time and help throw some hatred in the opposite direction xx

Also, yes, more pop hoes need to post more so it feels like less of an imbalance. I certainly welcome more people saying what they think of my songs, if not least it'd help me understand why you keep rejecting them especially when I go on a quest to win the pop votes every other month and fail.

countries I used were the ones whose flags I saw on the last few pages of the EOY

other axis could use different words, but is based on my feeling that some countries on both sides of the 'genre divide' often give off the sort of style that is normally "critic's darling"-esque, while others don't really care for that and enter more... shocking entries - as we all know critics aren't the final word in music taste and it's not meant to be a judgement either way.
