Slow Down the Flow slips down 5 this week, acceding the crown back to Dua Lipa, this time alongside Martin Garrix, after just one week. Scared To Be Lonely marks Lipa’s second #1 in the space of four weeks, and adds her to an exclusive club of acts to’ve topped the chart more than once – although, given that I only started charts in this format last summer, that’s not quite as impressive as it could be. It was close at the top throughout the week between Dua Garrix and Nelly Furtado’s Cold Hard Truth, which takes this week’s silver, and gains a new peak. Altogether, seven of this week’s top ten re-peak this week, and the presence of Nelly, Missy Elliott, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Goldfrapp all up there gives it something of a throwback feel.

New entries this week come in near the back end of the top 40. Surprisingly, the highest goes to UK alt rock outfit Deaf Havana, at #19; Cold War Kids, in a similar genre, also see a big surge this week, both outwith my usual remit of softer indie and electronica acts. Other new entries this week come from Kehlani, Bear’s Den, Evanescence frontwoman Amy Lee, Banks, Texas, ex-Saturday Una Healy, and Tinie Tempah. As AK + Veela’s Parallel Worlds finally drops out this week, longest-runner status goes to Fergie’s Life Goes On, which has proved to have much more longevity than its initial 31-27-28-out run suggested when it debuted back in November.

Look out for more on this week’s new entries in the next post which will have video links and mini reviews. Before that, here’s the whole list: the top 40 up to the third week of Feb. 2017:

Another week of change, with the most notable result being a 180 in how I feel about Dua Lipa. I found her 2016 output in general incredibly overrated and not really up my street at all. In 2017 she’s completely won me over, even if half of it is with a track from 2015. What further wonders will the year bring? – I might even become a Louisa Johnson fan!

This week sees some significant surges. On-the-rise track Ocean Hill by Trinix and Hannah Young pushes all the way up to #11 from a low 30s debut last week. Cold War Kids’ Love is Mystical is a surprise push all the way up to #12, but it’s racked up the plays this week just by virtue of me not listening to rock for a while, I’ve been on a bit of an explore/binge. Chained To the Rhythm, of course, by Katy Perry zooms straight into the top 10 to #8 this week; placing the same on my charts as on the official top 40. Sophie Ellis-Bextor scores her first top 10 since Not Giving Up On Love with Armin Van Buuren; last year’s Come With Us made it into the top 30.

On to this week’s new entries!

Highest pick of the bunch this week is a completely random one. Deaf Havana are a British alt-rock outfit on album #4, having seen greater and greater success with each release so far, building a slow burning success and fanbase. I suspect I might have lifted this originally from a new music friday playlist. It's a nice change to the kind of music that makes up most of what I listen to, and the different genre suits how I do my playlists, to mimic a radio A-List or B-List. I get a bit of Fightstar, even a bit of Blink from this.

This is Lee’s first foray back into mainstream commercial music for a while after working on film soundtracks, quite bizarrely from the Goth founder or a metal band a children's music album, and taking time out to care for her family; this having a lyric video suggests it might be pushed as a single or promo for upcoming work. The Evanescence frontwoman's been teasing new material from the band for a while now alongside working on her solo projects, so who knows what she'll focus on in 2017. This is an English language cover of a track originally in Italian, and it's really something. Lee's a great singer, underrated due to prejudice against the genre she works within.

As a Glasgow adoptee, I’d feel almost guilty if I wasn’t a fan of Texas, although I’ve liked them since before I moved. Active off and on since and between several late career re-peaks in the 90s and 00s, Texas have charted a few tracks on my weeklies and hold some space on my all-time as well with Dream Hotel. 30 years in, and the band are still releasing, and generally manage to chart a track or so for me every time they do. This is the most recent of those, following in order, Are You Ready, Start A Family, Talk About Love, and Detroit City, all released since 2014.

Banks' second album caught me a little late, after I didn't like the lead singles. I revisited her work after enjoying Gryffin's remix of Beggin for Thread through last year, and wow, her second album is much better than her first effort that wasn't up my street at all. There seems to be a trend of indie girls doing slow or dark melodic first efforts, only to go full bad girl for round 2, and it's a trend I like.

The indie band chart a third track from album Red Earth and Pouring Rain, following the title track and Emeralds last year. They're somewhere between The National, Alt-J, and Mumford and Sons without the offputting born again Christianity. This is slow indie doing slow indie, what's more to say? I love it.

Second charter for Tinashe in two weeks, with another poised for next week. Text From Your Ex is...alright. It doesn't scream 'hit', which Tinie's (calculated) output usually does, and for that reason, it strikes me as a bit strange. Maybe this sound was meant to be 'big' now, and just hasn't caught on yet? It's not bad though. Tinashe really carries the track.

Finally releasing her album SweetSexySavage after several years of it being promised, Kehlani scores her second hit on for me. Her prior, Alive featuring Coucheron, was back in 2015. Kehlani's not bad, but I'm not quite a big fan of hers yet. Right now she's just Jhene Aiko-lite.

Already more successful on my personals than (ex-?) bandmate Mollie King, Una Healy has, in keeping with Irish ex-pop band members, gone down the slightly folky pop rock route, following Niall Horan of One Direction, and others from the past. It’s very Corrs, in a good way, and Una's voice sounds really strong here. What can I say, I am Irish, this appeals. Una's #29 entry this week outpeaks Mollie's #36 peak after a three-week run last year.

And that’s the week! Please comment if you have thoughts! Comments make me smile! biggrin.gif
