Devil May Cry wasn't really my spotlight of Apashe's latest album, but it sounds great nevertheless.
I Wish nearly entered my chart oop, but Rayel might appear on my Top 200 with another song.
Water is pretty decent hit too.

Their first mainstream hit in a short while, 'Voodoo' manages to break the Hottest 200 mostly on the strength of gym plays as it had the shortest personal chart run of anything here. Whilst not near their strongest effort it clearly held up reasonably well with repeat listens anyhow.

The first of two hits for Dutch producer Eelke Kleijn this year, although this did a lot better on Spotify it's the lower of the two here. Assisted by another Dutch producer giving it a bit of an uplift 'Transmission' is a great melodic progressive house effort which deserved a higher personal chart peak really.

It comes from multi instrumentalist Andromida and it is a metal instrumental I thought would stand out a lot although ultimately it ended up being a DNQ. Hints of orchestration and piano throughout keep it interesting but ultimately it just goes hard.

It was a great year for MK getting two tracks in the UK chart and my Hottest 200 - the other one to follow a lot later on but until then 'Rhyme Dust' which also became huge for Dom Dolla (his 2nd biggest Spotify hit yet) and is more of what you'd expect from him than MK. Cleverly built around a Q-Tip sample and a strong bass heavy groove.

A chance find through YouTube recommendations now, although they'd seemingly been big in electronica for a while this was the first I'd heard of them, also being their first release in a few years. It's a very fresh take on the genre with its orchestration and live instruments included. Hopefully not just a one-off but we'll see what 2024 brings.

2022: After over a decade of being a big name in trance it was finally time for Gareth Emery to team up with Armin van Buuren. Having been teased weeks in advance I was expecting this to be the most obvious #1 of the year, but it ultimately had to settle for 2nd as Worakls unexpectedly released in the same week. I also would've loved a proper trance anthem from these two but it otherwise lived up to the hype for being a high energy fist-pumping clubland anthem. And there was also the small matter of Owl City finally making another appearance in the chart for the first time in over a half-decade, he does prove to be a great fit for the song. The song was expectedly Armin's biggest of the year, whereas Gareth has one more appearance to make.
That's it for Armin again this year oops. We'll hear a bit more from Garerth though.

Bringing Kylie back to the chart this year was Oliver Heldens, although she'd end up outdoing this soon afterwards, it was great to hear her on a straight-up dance track. It's not quite the most exciting production Oli's ever done though so it did underperform a little following up two top five hits that'll be appearing later on. Fun song though but won't be going down a classic for either performer.

2022: Haliene has one of the loveliest voices in dance music, which I'm sure helped 'Saving Light' become my biggest BJSC winner back in 2017. Five years later she released her debut album, from which this was taken... kind-of. This is actually a mash-up of her two album tracks 'Butterfly' and 'Metamorphosis', the former a ballad and the latter an instrumental trance piece assisted by Markus Schulz. The track for me works a lot better with the trance backing throughout and the song leading into the two euphoric trance drops.
We will hear from Haliene again later on..

In another great year for Gareth Emery amongst his new material he put out a surprise release in 'Mistral', a re-mastered version of a 20 year old instrumental track originally released under an alias. I'd never heard it before so it was great to see anyhow, a brilliant proper trance track that fits right in with his modern recordings.

2022: A mash-up using 'Luminous Spaces' (here retitled 'To Feel Again') and 'Trois' from the performers either side of the vs. separator. The original songs were lovely but bringing them together clearly made it even better making for a brilliant melodic house effort. The main sellers here for me are Sultan + Shepard, who put out an album last year and are expected to bring another next year.

A lucky find through Spotify suggestions, the song is a 1994 recording from Sub Sub, an electronica group who would later rebrand to indie band Doves. A more downtempo effort than their one UK hit single under this name, though a lot better really. With an interpolation of 'Strange Fruit' and a very spacious production I'd thought this would've been a big stand out for BJSC however it ended up being one of the year's flop entries for me.

2022: Worakls managed three #1s in as many months this year, with '54' being the second and longest-running of these, although not the highest in this rundown. It is a beauty of an orchestral house composition, what more can I say? It is a bit more subtle than 'Storm', his big hit of last year, but the way it plays around with the short riff throughout is very well done. The song is named after his daughter Liv (when capitalised, it can be read as the number 54 in Roman numerals) and the cover art is an artist's rendition of the song's structure.

2022: The first of two entries for tech house DJ Chapter & Verse - this was one of the *four* re-workings of 'The Beat Goes On' that came out in the same week, as producers were rushing to capitalise off The All Seeing I's 90s version going viral on TikTok. Being the most housey version I naturally preferred it, it's just what was needed for a modern version of the song.

An older song now that I had been saving as a song contest potential for a while before the right moment came for it. It is a classic trance shake up of a contemporary classical piece as covered by 'The Planets' though more famously performed by violinist Vanessa Mae. It's a brilliant instrumental piece and you can't go wrong with a classical influence in a dance track.

Taking off just as last year was about to come to a close saw Romy of The xx work with Fred Again to unexpectedly make a... trance song! Despite Fred's star power it sadly couldn't be a UK hit single but it was at least highly rated on the internet and nominated for a Grammy. We love an emotional banger anyhow which this is.
