Last year was my 10th annual EOY, which means this year...is the 10th anniversary of my 1st EOY! magic.gif Stay tuned to find out where YOUR favorite artists have landed - that is, if your favorite artists are Luke Combs, Jazzy, and Morgan Wallen. sarah11.png D-Block Europe will also be making their very first appearance! There, that should have scared everyone away x

As always, there will be no timeline on this. It could start in a few days, or in a few weeks. Could be done by the end of the month, or by the end of May. What can I say, I'm full of surprises! I do think I've decided on my #1 at least ohmy.gif

64. Leigh-Anne "Don't Say Love"
I'm not the biggest Little Mix stan but have been patiently waiting for solo music from everyone – any releases have been few and far between which is a shame! That said, Leigh-Anne made it out of the gate with everything I wanted from a solo effort and more. 'Don't Say Love' sounds very inspired by the 2000s pop we grew up with while still feeling fresh and current. I'm disappointed it didn't show any staying power in the charts, but the others will be hard-pressed to record a song I like more than this!

63. Fred Again feat. Jozzy "Ten"
It took until now to find a song I like from Fred Again, and not just like, but love! His previous output was entirely not my thing, so this recent change in musical direction has been very much welcomed by me. I would describe "Ten" as very soothing, something I could easily listen to on repeat, but don't want to get tired of it! Never thought I'd say this but I might be looking forward to more ohmy.gif

62. Chase & Status feat. Hedex & ArrDee "Liquor & Cigarettes"
It goes without saying, but what a year for Chase & Status! Their revival has been great to follow these past few months. ArrDee was a natural fit for 'Liquor & Cigarettes', although I wouldn't be surprised if it was his song originally that he gave to Chase & Status. Either way, I would love for them to do more production for ArrDee! Speaking of their production, while we're here, let's shout out 'Disconnect' as an honorable mention, one I definitely liked but not enough to make this list.

61. The Weeknd & Future "Double Fantasy"
On paper you'd think a collab between these two would be quite big, but you never know with The Weeknd anymore, his chart consistency is no longer a thing. For what it's worth, I enjoyed 'Double Fantasy' a lot, although Future's part wasn't entirely essential. I guess I didn't miss anything by not watching The Idol, but at least a couple good songs came out of it laugh.gif
Previous EOY history for The Weeknd: "I Feel It Coming" (#2, 2017 and #29, 2016), "Pray For Me" (#14, 2018), "Power Is Power" (#40, 2019), "Heartless" (#1, 2020), "Blinding Lights" (#4, 2020), "In Your Eyes" (#50, 2020), "You Right" (#47, 2021), "Take My Breath" (#48, 2021), "Save Your Tears" (#63, 2021), "One Right Now" (#13, 2022)
Previous EOY history for Future: "Cold" (#20, 2017), "Everyday" (#22, 2017), "Wait For U" (#33, 2022)

60. Olivia Rodrigo "Can't Catch Me Now"
Don't ask me about the Hunger Games books or films, but the soundtracks have always delivered, and ten years later this is no exception! Olivia was a great choice, with 'Can't Catch Me Now' having that proper cinematic feel while also sounding like Fleet Foxes or something like that. Not the most obvious fit for her but it worked! Not sure why there weren't more big singles to promote the soundtrack, like they had for the previous films; this song definitely left me wanting more, but in a good way!
Previous EOY history: "Deja Vu" (#1, 2021), "Drivers License" (#27, 2021), "Good 4 U" (#38, 2021)

59. Noah Kahan "Stick Season"
Earlier in the year, it felt like 'Stick Season' was a victim of bad timing, as it bubbled under the chart but not enough to reach its full potential. Its success now reminds me of the re-release days of the sales era, it's great that songs can still have second chances these days. As for the song, it's easily my favorite that I've heard from him so far, fully deserving of its success! Still waiting for US radio to stop avoiding it but hopefully they can't resist much longer. Expect this to be higher in my 2024 EOY!

58. Zach Bryan feat. Kacey Musgraves "I Remember Everything"
Everyone probably expects me to be obsessed with Zach Bryan, like every other country fan in America, but I'm not there yet. That's not to say I don't have mad respect for his artistry and how he's already selling out arenas! That said, I have nothing but love for 'I Remember Everything', not least because of Kacey Musgraves. kink.gif I have to love the song responsible for giving her a Hot 100 #1, and actual chart show plays on Radio 1. Following its international success has been surreal!
Previous EOY history for Kacey: "Space Cowboy" (#55, 2018), "High Horse" (#58, 2018), "Rainbow" (#35, 2019), "Simple Times" (#52, 2021)

57. Morgan Wallen "Thought You Should Know"

Morgan's no stranger to my chart or my EOY. You probably know who he is by now and I'm not expecting to change the mind of anyone who's not a fan. For whatever reason, his thick accent and obnoxiously gravelly voice actually appeals to me. laugh.gif But he does rein it in a bit for this sweet ballad 'Thought You Should Know'. Despite being sandwiched between two much bigger singles in his discography ('You Proof' and 'Last Night'), I strongly prefer this one!
Previous EOY history: "Chasin' You" (#31, 2020), "Wasted On You" (#11, 2022), "Broadway Girls" (#21, 2022)

56. Ice Spice & Nicki Minaj "Princess Diana"
It was only a matter of time before I became an Ice Spice fan. She didn't really get my attention until 'Boy's A Liar Pt. 2', but after that, all it took was one simple, fun earworm of a song, and a little help from Nicki Minaj, who somehow has avoided my EOY for five years. (Aside: I'm even more of an Ice Spice fan after seeing her Dunkin commercials *.*) 'Princess Diana' was an awfully short song, but they made up for it with another collab just a few months later. 'Barbie World' was enjoyable too and falls just short of my EOY!
Previous EOY history for Nicki: "Side To Side" (#18, 2016), "Kissing Strangers" (#33, 2017), "Woman Like Me" (#47, 2018)

55. Miley Cyrus "Flowers"
Wow, I still remember my first listen of 'Flowers' and how utterly impressed I was! The Bruno Mars lyrical reference stood out right away and kind of blew my mind to an extent. It was also a joy to see Miley soar to #1 with ease, after years of seeing her songs not chart as high as they deserve. Unfortunately, the burnout was real on this one. So it ends up near the bottom of my EOY, but Miley does have two more songs to come.
Previous EOY history: "Adore You" (#31, 2014), "Feelin' Myself" (#59, 2014), "Malibu" (#40, 2017), "Mother's Daughter" (#2, 2019), "Don't Call Me Angel" (#21, 2019), "Slide Away" (#28, 2019), "Midnight Sky" (#11, 2020)

54. Billie Eilish "What Was I Made For?"
This commentary is fresh off of me finally watching Barbie last weekend. The inspiration behind 'What Was I Made For?' was already pretty obvious, but my appreciation is even greater now that I have the full context from the film. I also enjoyed hearing it on the radio…a bit jarringly slow, but it did stop me in my tracks every time. Seems like it's going to do well in this awards season, with hopefully some new music to follow!
Previous EOY history: "Bad Guy" (#36, 2019), "Everything I Wanted" (#32, 2020 and #57, 2019), "My Future" (#46, 2020), "Happier Than Ever" (#8, 2021)

53. Issey Cross "Bittersweet Goodbye"
Like probably most of you, I recognized Issey Cross from her vocals on Wilkinson's 'Used To This'. 'Bittersweet Goodbye' definitely relies a bit on the Verve sample, but I think it's a fantastic use of it. It took me waaayyy too long to realize the connection between the two songs, despite them both having “bittersweet” in the title. I'd like to think Issey has even more potential so hopefully Radio 1 and others will continue to support her!

52. Renee Rapp "Bruises"

I have a separate EOY for BJSC entries, so normally they are not included in this one, but 'Bruises' was a unique one because I'd already discovered and heard it before. BJSC did help me fall madly in love with it, and for me it transcended the contest so much that it felt deserving of a spot here too. I don't expect that to make sense to anyone but me, and that's fine. laugh.gif I adore the lyrics, having sadly related to some of them, and the music video is one of my favorites of the year too. Seems like Renee is finally getting her big break and I'm looking forward to her SNL performance!

51. Kane Brown & Katelyn Brown "Thank God"

Another country ballad in this section, 'Thank God' is a duet with Kane Brown and his wife Katelyn. I think that's enough info for you to determine if you'd like it or not. laugh.gif It wasn't instant for me, but was heartwarming enough to grow in my affections as it became a crossover hit from country to pop radio. Too sweet to resist, I guess!
Previous EOY history for Kane: "Like I Love Country Music" (#36, 2022)

'Stick Season' in a very similar position to my EOY (where it's #60) and bookended by similarly wholesome(? - is that the adjective I'm looking for...) productions for Olivia and Zach / Kacey - the former also reminded me of Fleet Foxes!

50. Meghan Trainor "Mother"
Justice for Meghan Trainor, her star faded much more quickly than it ever should have. Perhaps she was written off as a one-trick pony even though she's proven to be capable of more than just 'All About That Bass' soundalikes. Well 'Mother' is plenty of fun, the message behind it is relevant, and in fact I enjoyed it even more than 'Made You Look'.
Previous EOY history: "Lips Are Movin’" (#36, 2014), "Me Too" (#24, 2016), "No" (#45, 2016), "No Excuses" (#15, 2018)

49. Libianca "People"
'People' got my attention being one of the first hits of 2023, and from an artist I'd never heard of before. It stood out from other Afrobeats songs I'd heard as well, being downtempo and with minimal production to distract from Libianca's soothing vocals (this is already the second time I've called a song soothing in this thread). Not the kind of song I'd ever expect to be a top-2 hit, but its slow climb was actually reminiscent of Cat Burns' 'Go' from the year before! Unfortunately it peaked at #80 in the US and I think I only heard it on the radio once here. sad.gif

48. Lizzy McAlpine "Ceilings"
If I didn't know better I'd have thought 'Ceilings' was an Olivia Rodrigo album track, but that's no criticism! It seemed like the song's popularity would be a nice way to fill the void in between Olivia's albums. That's also not to say it wasn't a good song on its own merits, because it is! I would definitely call it one of the most unlikely songs to make the UK top 10 last year, and it stood out every week it was played on the chart show. I wish it would've been played more on US radio, but alas, its success here was pretty much limited to TikTok and Spotify.

47. Sonny Fodera & MK feat. Clementine Douglas "Asking"
I'm happy to have a handful of dance and EDM hits in this year's EOY, even if they're mostly the ones that Buzzjack didn't like. blush.gif I'm wondering if 'Asking' is really that bad or if people are just giving it a hard time. I thought for sure it was sampling a random 90s R&B song, which I'm generally a fan of, and in this sample-heavy era I'm impressed that it was original after all. I kind of get why the vocals are off-putting, but I don't find it any worse than any other songs that chop up vocals. I'll just mention here (instead of in the chart show thread) that it can stay on SCR as long as it wants teresa.gif

46. Kylie Minogue "Padam Padam"
I guess I'm a fair-weather Kylie fan, as I enjoy her hits but have skipped most of her recent singles that missed the top 40 and didn't get a chart show play. It was fun to throw all of that aside as soon as the Padamic hit, it was clear that no one would be able to resist 'Padam Padam' and honestly, why would you want to? In terms of Buzzjack it was really the best shared experience of the year; I loved those first few weeks where we were all in awe of how high it was charting! Naturally the song itself was enjoyable too, incredible to hear Kylie record something so current and absolutely nail it. Fingers crossed for more moments like this in 2024!

45. Miley Cyrus "Used To Be Young"
I'll admit, I was very quick to write off 'Used To Be Young' and didn't really give it a chance at first. With the way Miley's previous singles killed the momentum of 'Flowers', releasing a new song less than six months after the album made me think it couldn't possibly be any good, or it would've been on the album in the first place. After tolerating it for maybe a month on the chart show, suddenly, it clicked. Turns out it's not only meaningful, especially being released 10 years after her VMAs incident, but also is one of her best ballads to date!
Previous EOY history: "Adore You" (#31, 2014), "Feelin' Myself" (#59, 2014), "Malibu" (#40, 2017), "Mother’s Daughter" (#2, 2019), "Don’t Call Me Angel" (#21, 2019), "Slide Away" (#28, 2019), "Midnight Sky" (#11, 2020)

44. Calvin Harris & Sam Smith "Desire"
Spoiler alert, 'Miracle' will not be on this list. It was nice enough, and I was certainly happy for Calvin and Ellie, but for whatever reason I never wanted to listen to it outside of the chart show or First Look. I still prefer 'I Need Your Love' and 'Outside' from them. As for Calvin and Sam, on the other hand, 'Desire' got me back on board and I even liked it more than their long-running #1 'Promises'. Go figure. laugh.gif The drop is my favorite part, more so than the verses or chorus, but Sam sounds good on it too!
Previous EOY history for Calvin: "Thinking About You" (#50, 2014), "Pray To God" (#39, 2015), "My Way" (#41, 2016), "One Kiss", (#45, 2018), Giant", (#47, 2019)
Previous EOY history for Sam: "Latch" (#11, 2014), "Money On My Mind" (#38, 2014), "I'm Not The Only One" (#39, 2014), "Too Good At Goodbyes" (#31, 2017), "How Do You Sleep?" (#1, 2019), "Diamonds" (#10, 2020), "To Die For" (#61, 2020), "Unholy" (#32, 2022)

43. Troye Sivan "Got Me Started"
Honestly, as soon as I heard the 'Shooting Stars' intro I didn't even need to hear the rest of the song…but I did, of course, and loved the rest of it, too! 'Got Me Started' was proof that 'Rush' was no fluke, that Troye had a proper vision for this album and was truly evolving as an artist. I can't help but think it was sandwiched between two bigger singles and didn't get the attention it deserved, especially with how quickly 'One Of Your Girls' took off. Then again, I feel grateful it got any attention at all, and months later I'm nowhere near sick of it.
Previous EOY history: "Youth" (#8, 2016), "My My My!" (#37, 2018), "1999" (#53, 2018), "I’m So Tired…" (#16, 2019), "Take Yourself Home" (#49, 2020)

42. Luke Combs "Going, Going, Gone"

Luke Combs is finally starting to become an artist I consistently like, after years of only liking the occasional song of his. In fact this song is the follow-up to 'The Kind Of Love We Make' which was #2 on my EOY last year! 'Going, Going, Gone' is one of my favorite lyrical efforts of his, a remarkably heartfelt change of attitude from his previous breakup songs, and I love the title too (I know it's used for more than just baseball, but I know it as a baseball phrase). Very interestingly, Luke said the song was inspired by Tracy Chapman's 'Fast Car', and we all know what that led to…stay tuned!
Previous EOY history: "Even Though I'm Leaving" (#8, 2020), "The Kind Of Love We Make" (#2, 2022)

41. Metro Boomin, The Weeknd & 21 Savage "Creepin'"
I did really like 'I Don't Wanna Know' back in middle school, and all in all 'Creepin'' is a solid cover! It did suffer a little bit from being overplayed, except for when 21 Savage says "rinky dink", which will never get old. laugh.gif

40. Tate McRae "Greedy"
It was great to see Tate be pushed to the forefront for this album, with certified pop bangers and promo comparable to the main pop girls. Someone clearly saw the potential with 'Greedy' and it seems to have paid off. Tate continues to show her versatility as an artist, but no longer mirroring the style of Billie Eilish or Olivia Rodrigo – I hope this time she's found a lane that's just for her! Oh and I love that she went full Canadian by filming the video at a hockey rink. Fingers crossed this upward trajectory continues for her!
Previous EOY history: "You Broke Me First" (#42, 2020), "She's All I Wanna Be" (#24, 2022)

39. Switch Disco & Ella Henderson "React"
In my defense of 'React'—not that anyone asked for it—I totally get that 'Children' is sacred to some, and that's why there were negative reactions to it being sampled. I'm only vaguely familiar with the Robert Miles song, so I don't hold the same attachment to it, which probably allowed me to appreciate its sample here. Even if there was no sample, Ella just sounds great on it. I can't believe she's never been in my EOY until now, but it may not be the last time, with the way I'm liking 'Alibi' so far!

38. Ed Sheeran "Eyes Closed"
'Eyes Closed' was one of my favorite lead singles ever from Ed; personally I was looking forward to him going in a slightly less commercial direction on Subtract than he did on Equals. I wish I could say it got me to finally listen to a full album of his, but that wasn't quite the case. kink.gif At any rate, it was a good year for those of us who enjoy listening to Ed Sheeran without him being omnipresent or overplayed…which may or may not be just me!
Previous EOY history: "Don't" (#5, 2014), "Sing" (#30, 2014), "Thinking Out Loud" (#47, 2015), "Shape Of You" (#49, 2017), "Cross Me" (#20, 2019), "I Don't Care" (#37, 2019), "Overpass Graffiti" (#18, 2022 & #32, 2021), "Shivers" (#55, 2021), "Afterglow" (#62, 2021), "Celestial" (#14, 2022), "2step" (#22, 2022), "For My Hand" (#53, 2022)

37. Anotr & Abel Balder "Relax My Eyes"
I guess I would say 'Relax My Eyes' was the 'Afraid To Feel' of 2023, a fast-paced earworm that never lost its awesomeness the entire summer. It climbed at a snail's pace to get to the top 40, but I'm glad it got there, otherwise I may have never listened to it!

36. Gunna "Fukumean"
If you're surprised to see this here, so am I. I knew of Gunna from 'Lemonade' and pretty much nothing else until 'Fukumean'. I'm weirdly in awe of this song because it has such an atypical structure, for it to be this catchy almost seems like a fluke…and don't even ask me what the lyrics are. kink.gif
Previous EOY history: "Lemonade" (#25, 2020)

35. Paul Russell "Lil Boo Thang"
I'm a big fan of 'Lil Boo Thang' for the same reasons I was a fan of 'Fancy Like' two years ago. It's shameless fun (not to be taken seriously hitler.gif ) and I enjoyed getting wrapped up in its virality for a while. I'm glad radio stepped up to support it, especially in the US, since Spotify seemingly did not. I know literally nothing about Paul Russell and expect he'll be a one hit wonder, but it's a darn good hit!

34. Harry Styles "Satellite"
This is the second time in a row where I've had a soft spot for one of the final singles of a Harry Styles era. Last time 'Golden' became his first #1 in my chart and is now firmly my fave of his. I was patiently waiting for one more single after 'Music From A Sushi Restaurant', in case the same magic might happen again, and sure enough, it did! I'll always associate 'Satellite' with a road trip I took at the end of summer, where it was on the radio a lot, I was in the middle of nowhere and certainly felt like Stomper in the music video laugh.gif
Previous EOY history: "Sign Of The Times" (#64, 2017), "Watermelon Sugar" (#45, 2020), "Golden" (#3, 2021 & #39, 2020), "As It Was" (#15, 2022), "Late Night Talking" (#55, 2022)[/size][/b]

33. Raye & 070 Shake "Escapism"
After so many years, and so much record label drama, what a joy to see Raye prove her doubters wrong by scoring her biggest hit to date, and with a song she seems so proud of. While she struggled and suffered to get there, in a way I wouldn't with on any artist, that also makes it even more rewarding as a fan, having known what she's been through. Seeing it stall at #22 on the Hot 100 was frustrating, but that's still higher than I ever expected her to chart here!
Previous EOY history for Raye: "Secrets" (#51, 2010)

32. Latto feat. Lu Kala "Lottery"

It was no surprise that Latto would attempt to recreate the success of 'Big Energy' with another pop hit, even though this isn't really her usual style. I happened to think 'Lottery' was way better! (Perhaps also no surprise, considering Dr. Luke's unfortunate involvement) I'm sure there was a time in the past 5-10 years where it could've been massive. Alas, it limped to an #83 peak on the Hot 100, while reaching a bit higher in Canada thanks to Lu Kala's feature – her chorus really slaps *.*

31. Old Dominion "Memory Lane"

If you're not familiar with Old Dominon, they're a country band that's been around for several years now. I'm normally pretty indifferent to their music, aside from their lyrics which are some of the most clever in the genre these days. I also respect that they've really honed their own style and have never fit into the usual country stereotypes. Anywho, this song 'Memory Lane' was finally their first one to really hold my interest. It was very instant for me, and sonically it just captures the warm nostalgia of the lyrics.

30. Chase & Status feat. Bou, Irah, Flowdan, Trigga & Takura "Baddadan"
With the likes of Kylie, Madonna and Shania Twain having comebacks to varying extents, the revival of Chase & Status is not to be overlooked, and was perhaps the most random and unexpected of all. While 'Blind Faith' was #27 in my end-of-decade, I otherwise wouldn't consider myself a fan, but I did miss drum and bass, and something about 'Baddadan' eventually clicked with me in a big way. A brilliant effort by all!

29. Miley Cyrus "Jaded"
As I mentioned, 'Flowers' burned out quickly for me, so I was ready for more music by the time the album released. On first listen, my reactions to 'River' and 'Jaded' were polar opposites, with the latter being the one I knew I'd come back to. I'm glad it was a single, even if 'Flowers' overshadowed it and hampered its potential (not to sound like Hadji). The song complements Miley's raspy vocals and I just love its retro flavor. Just hearing it on the radio over the summer was enough for me.
Previous EOY history: "Adore You" (#31, 2014), "Feelin' Myself" (#59, 2014), "Malibu" (#40, 2017), "Mother's Daughter" (#2, 2019), "Don't Call Me Angel" (#21, 2019), "Slide Away" (#28, 2019), "Midnight Sky" (#11, 2020)

28. Loreen "Tattoo"
2012 was one of my favorite years of music, with 'Euphoria' being one of its many highlights. I'm still in awe that Loreen managed to win Melodifestivalen AND Eurovision all over again, 11 years later. It definitely felt like déjŕ vu in the best way. While I prefer 'Euphoria', 'Tattoo' is still pretty spectacular, and it was interesting to see how she would chart in the streaming era, compared to the download era. Much better, as it turns out! It more than made up for the 4-week top 40 run of 'Euphoria' and had some proper longevity, so I feel like justice was served.

27. Olivia Rodrigo "Get Him Back!"
'Get Him Back!' is the first of three Guts singles in my top 30! I was going to praise Olivia rapping on the verses, but I'm not sure if it's rapping or just talking. Either way, it builds up to one of her best choruses to date. The lyrics play with the double-meaning of the song title which is clever too. Ultimately, it was a hit, although I think the other two singles overshadowed it a bit, including in my own affections. That said, it matches where 'Drivers License' placed in my EOY two years before, and they also shared a #3 peak in my chart…just a coincidence though!
Previous EOY history: "Deja Vu" (#1, 2021), "Drivers License" (#27, 2021), "Good 4 U" (#38, 2021)

26. Dierks Bentley "Gold"

This is the highest Dierks has been in my EOY for almost a decade! He's become more of a legacy artist for me, where I'll listen to his new songs and appreciate them, but generally stick to the songs I grew up hearing on the radio. 'Gold' managed to grow into a song I like as much as his classics. It helped that I saw him live when the song was near its peak, which was a great moment. And so I declare this to enter the Dierks canon!
Previous EOY history: "I Hold On" (#14, 2014), "Drunk On A Plane" (#35, 2014), "Riser" (#42, 2015), "Somewhere On A Beach" (#55, 2016), "Burning Man" (#56, 2018), "Woman, Amen" (#57, 2018), "Gone" (#61, 2021)

25. Mimi Webb "Red Flags"
I've been a Mimi Webb fan, albeit a very casual one, since 'Before I Go' was sent to BJSC, and I've enjoyed watching her break through over the past few years. 'Red Flags' is the most uptempo song I've heard from her, and also became my favorite! It's honestly tragic that it wasn't Mimi's third top 10, let alone her biggest hit to date, and especially that it has to share a peak with 'Dumb Love,' although at least it wasn't a lower peak. Anyway, we'll see if she continues to show versatility as an artist.

24. Jonas Brothers "Waffle House"
I wasn't too impressed with previous single 'Wings', but 'Waffle House' got me hyped for the Jonas Brothers all over again. They pack a lot of energy into two and a half minutes, and the same can be said about the majority of their album. They've still got it! Unnecessary fact: I think I've been to Waffle House once ever, maybe twice.
Previous EOY history: "Only Human" (#5, 2019), "Sucker" (#55, 2019), "Leave Before You Love Me" (#36, 2021)

23. Casso, Raye & D-Block Europe "Prada"
Raye probably doesn't endorse this song, but I will. sarah11.png While it pains me a bit to give D-Block Europe any sort of praise, 'Ferrari Horses' was the one hit of theirs I enjoyed. I don't know what inspired Casso to turn it into 'Prada', but it was a very unexpected stroke of genius. The tempo change alone was a massive improvement, and the production gives it more energy and elevates it further.
Previous EOY history for Raye: "Secrets" (#51, 2010)

22. Troye Sivan "Rush"
Troye made a triumphant return with 'Rush', making the long wait for new music worthwhile with just this song, let alone the ones that followed! The title speaks for itself really, and the exquisite piano-house production is a perfect fit, as is the music video. It all feels very authentic to Troye and I'm so proud of him having this moment nearly a decade after his debut. Hopefully this is remembered as a career-defining era for him; it sure seems like it deserves to be!
Previous EOY history: "Youth" (#8, 2016), "My My My!" (#37, 2018), "1999" (#53, 2018), "I'm So Tired…" (#16, 2019), "Take Yourself Home" (#49, 2020)

21. Rema & Selena Gomez "Calm Down"
I vaguely recall being impressed when 'Calm Down' first went top 10 and top 3…now it seems like such an obvious hit! I did mostly overlook it until the Selena Gomez version was released, and even then it took two or three months to grow on me. I do need a loooong break from hearing it now, but still had to leave it this high because I loved it for a while!

Many more I like since I last posted, especially with one-word titles - 'People', 'ceilings', 'Desire', 'Escapism.', 'Baddadan', 'Prada' and, most of all, 'Tattoo'. I'd also have 'Calm Down' among my top faves even now, though I can't remember when I last heard the Rema-only version!

20. Charli XCX "Speed Drive"
'Speed Drive' was the highest-charting Barbie soundtrack song in my chart and my EOY. It was so instant for me, but to be fair I like Charli's mainstream pop a lot more than her other output. I didn't mind it being so short but it wouldn't have hurt to go past the second chorus! Naturally it was even better in the context of the film. It was surreal to see Charli with her first top 10 as lead artist in over 8 years, one of many great chart milestones last year!
Previous EOY history: "Boom Clap" (#3, 2014), "Fancy" (#4, 2014), "1999" (#53, 2018), "Good Ones" (#46, 2021), "Beg For You" (#34, 2022)

19. Bugzy Malone & TeeDee "Out Of Nowhere"
'Out Of Nowhere' was already #29 in my 2022 EOY. Since it peaked at #1 on my personal chart in January 2023, I thought it was fair to include it again. I already liked most of what I'd heard from Bugzy Malone, and he's deserved a proper hit song for a while now. It was worth the wait, as "Out Of Nowhere" was the right song for it to happen to, his biggest banger yet!
Previous EOY history: "Out Of Nowhere" (#29, 2022)

18. P!nk "Trustfall"
'Trustfall' was a brilliant album title, and the title track followed suit by being equally brilliant. P!nk's music still sounds as current as it always has, even among a new generation of artists that weren't even born when her career started. At least some credit goes to Fred Again for the production. Also, the acoustic duet version of this with Kelly Clarkson was a dream come true!
Previous EOY history: "What About Us" (#63, 2017), "Beautiful Trauma" (#41, 2018), "Love Me Anyway" (#58, 2020)

17. Taylor Swift "Cruel Summer"
Question: does the belated success of 'Cruel Summer' mean that it should have been a single all along? Or was it better/more rewarding for it to be an accidental hit in 2023? I lean toward the latter! There's no denying that Taylor's star is much bigger now than in 2019, and the Eras Tour was a big factor in the song going stratospheric last year, when it probably wouldn't have done so back then. I appreciated the song at the time, but am a much bigger fan of it now, although I'm certainly ready for a break from it too!
Previous EOY history: "Shake It Off" (#22, 2014), "Wildest Dreams" (#25, 2015), "Delicate" (#1, 2018), "…Ready For It?" (#49, 2018), "You Need To Calm Down" (#32, 2019), "Exile" (#15, 2020), "The Man" (#19, 2020), "Cardigan" (#38, 2020), "All Too Well (Taylor's Version)" (#28, 2021), "Willow" (#43, 2021), "Anti-Hero" (#25, 2022)

16. Mae Stephens "If We Ever Broke Up"
A year ago I couldn't tell you the difference between Mae Stephens, Mae Muller or Maisie Peters. In fact I barely know the difference now kink.gif but 'If We Ever Broke Up' got my attention just from the chart show and First Look, and that was enough to have it stuck in my head the rest of the week. I love the weird chirping sound! It was enough of an earworm to become a surprise #1 in my chart in April. I've only listened to one other song of hers so I'm open to hear recommendations!

15. Morgan Wallen "One Thing At A Time"

Here is Morgan Wallen's only appearance in my EOY this year. That's right, 'Last Night' will not be here! It didn't even make my chart, very odd that his biggest hit to date was a song I didn't like at all. Anyway, enough about that. 'One Thing At A Time' was one of many catchier tracks on the album of the same name, with clever lyrics about quitting either alcohol or his relationship, but not both. It was his third #2 and fourth top-two hit on my chart. I don't expect to change anyone's mind about Morgan, but I feel like his vocals have finally become a little more palatable, and I'm in awe at how massive he has become with this album.
Previous EOY history: "Chasin' You" (#31, 2020), "Wasted On You" (#11, 2022), "Broadway Girls" (#21, 2022)

14. Elley Duhe & Teddy Swims "Face Myself"

Elley and Teddy are two artists I've been excited about for a while, especially Elley and her BJSC entries, and I've wanted them both to hit it big. I never imagined they would be on a song together, but whoever came up with that idea is officially my new favorite person. It was amazing to hear their voices together, and the song itself is beautifully sad. 'Face Myself' was an instant #1 for me and one of the most exciting releases of the year. Now I just want Elley to have a 'Lose Control'-size smash!
Previous EOY history for Teddy: "Love For A Minute" (#31, 2022)

13. P!nk "Never Gonna Not Dance Again"
Despite being a lifelong P!nk fan, 'Never Gonna Not Dance Again' was not instant for me (not helped by the title!) but turned out to be a surprise grower. After watching the video, which took place in a grocery store, coincidentally, what made it click for me was hearing it at the grocery store for the first time. laugh.gif Ever since, I've thought it was one of her most fun songs, and it still hasn't got old. It's even her best appearance to date on my EOY, although that doesn't factor in her pre-2014 output of course!
Previous EOY history: "What About Us" (#63, 2017), "Beautiful Trauma" (#41, 2018), "Love Me Anyway" (#58, 2020)

12. Zara Larsson & David Guetta "On My Love"
'On My Love' was an instant fave because it sounded like it came straight out of that early-2010s era that was David Guetta's prime. It was great to hear that style again on a hit song, and it took me back to a time when music in general had so much energy and tempo and excitement. With that in mind I was glad to see it succeed in the streaming era!

Previous EOY history for David: "Flames" (#20, 2018), "Remember" (#18, 2021), "I'm Good (Blue)" (#35, 2022)

11. Olivia Rodrigo "Vampire"
I can't say 'Vampire' was anything groundbreaking, but it was a perfectly solid song for Olivia to come back with. I love the build-up in the verses, the background “how do you lie, how do you lie, how do you lie”, and of course, the surprisingly heavy guitars! Almost gives 'Happier Than Ever' a run for its money. I do listen to the clean version though, not crazy about the swearing on it. It was my #1 song in July and falls just short of the top 10 here.

10. Lainey Wilson "Watermelon Moonshine"

For those who don't know, Lainey is the biggest female success story in country music this decade. While her Southern drawl may be extra thick, she does have a nice voice and is currently pretty much guaranteed a hit with anything she releases, such is her star power right now. While I wasn't an immediate fan of hers (having back-to-back truck songs as singles certainly didn't help), 'Watermelon Moonshine' was the song that stopped me in my tracks and got me to listen. It's pretty much a modern day 'Strawberry Wine', and that's high praise! The ballad topped my monthly personal chart in October and sneaks into my EOY top 10.

9. Linkin Park "Lost"
Linkin Park's second album Meteora is my favorite album of all time. I'd only bought an anniversary edition of an album once before (although I appreciate the trend), but when the Meteora 20th anniversary edition was announced, I knew I had to have it – not least because my original copy is in terrible shape from how many times I've opened it and played the CD! 'Lost', as you probably know, was an unreleased track from the album, and needless to say, it became an instant fave. I'm so glad this was released, nice to hear Chester again on a "new" track!

8. Ayra Starr "Rush"
Definitely a record year for Afrobeats in my EOY! True to her name, Ayra Starr seems to have some star quality beyond just this song, so I hope we'll keep hearing more from her. I thought 'Rush' was so strong melodically that it could've worked in any genre, and I feel like it could've done well in the held-back era too, even before Afrobeats was as popular as it is now. I've replayed it loads, eventually moved on to remixes and found some great ones of those too!

7. Jazzy "Giving Me"
Believe me, if you knew my opinion of 'Make Me Feel Good', you'd know I wasn't rushing to hear any of Jazzy's solo output. laugh.gif But 'Giving Me' was a pleasant surprise, to say the least, when I first heard it on the chart show, and within a few weeks I was utterly obsessed. Much of Buzzjack dismissed the song by claiming it sounded like AI, which is the new lazy way of criticizing a song you don't like. My much more valid criticism is that the song ends too quickly and should be at least a minute longer. basil.gif Jazzy & Jess Glynne collab WHEN?

6. Lil Durk feat. J. Cole "All My Life"
Hearing either of these artists on a Dr. Luke song was not on my bingo card! Actually, I was already a big fan of 'All My Life' before I knew who produced it, by which time it was too late to change my mind. I like the kid-sung chorus, reminiscent of Jay-Z's 'Hard Knock Life' and Nas' 'I Can', which were both childhood faves. J. Cole's verse is excellent, and it was nice to hear him on a more mainstream song again, as someone who prefers his earlier output over his recent stuff. Deserved a top 10 peak in the UK, but otherwise I'm happy with its chart performance.

5. Dua Lipa "Houdini"
Okay, this feels like a risk, to rank a song that was released in November over songs I enjoyed for the majority of the year or even longer. Is this recency bias, or will 'Houdini' hold up well enough in my affections to justify this? Well, I'm predicting the latter, and here's why: the Kevin Parker production is truly incredible, it's already one of my favorite Dua songs of her career, and I'm confident it will remain as such!
Previous EOY history: "Be The One" (#3, 2017), "New Rules" (#4, 2017), "Electricity" (#30, 2018), "One Kiss" (#45, 2018), "Swan Song" (#23, 2019), "Don't Start Now" (#31, 2019), "Physical" (#7, 2020), "Levitating" (#24, 2020), "Hallucinate" (#33, 2020), "Cold Heart" (#7, 2021), "Love Again" (#10, 2020), "We're Good" (#21, 2021)

4. Chris Stapleton "White Horse"

This one also has a risk of recency bias; although 'White Horse' was released in July, it didn't peak in my chart until December, just like 'Houdini'. Chris is the most respected artist in country music and a song like this proves that he deserves it all. It's all great but the chorus in particular is one of the best I've heard in my life, and his vocals are absolutely insane. It blows my mind that this song is even capable of existing.
Previous EOY history: "Love Me Anyway" (#58, 2020), "Starting Over" (#63, 2020)

3. Zara Larsson "Can't Tame Her"
I couldn't be happier for Zara to have the year she had last year. It always felt like her chart success was cut way too short; she deserved much more than to be a one-album wonder. That said, the music needs to be good too, and 'Can't Tame Her' was the perfect song to prove that she could still deliver. The intro in particular is massive; sometimes the chart show played an extended loop of just that part which made me like it even more. Anyway, I'm thankful for her renaissance, long may it last!

2. Luke Combs "Fast Car"
Unfortunately this is the second year in a row that Luke Combs has been #2 on my EOY! In 2022 he was there with 'The Kind Of Love We Make', which never even topped my personal chart, but was enough of a slow-burner to outrank all my #1s that year. 'Fast Car' finally gave Luke his first #1 on my chart, as it proved to be a perfect summer night song, especially blasting on the radio driving to or from a concert. He absolutely did the song justice and it was amazing to watch it become such a crossover hit, albeit blocked from #1 on the Hot 100 which was frustrating! I'm glad Tracy Chapman (my fellow Ohioan) gave it her seal of approval, and that it drew attention to her original as well, especially after that Grammy performance. Hopefully she's raking in the royalties from all these covers of her song!
Previous EOY history: "Even Though I'm Leaving" (#8, 2020), "The Kind Of Love We Make" (#2, 2022)

1. Olivia Rodrigo "Bad Idea Right?"
While Luke Combs is the first artist to have two #2s, Olivia Rodrigo is the first artist to have two #1s in my EOY. What a way to celebrate my 10th year of compiling these! Her first #1 was the immaculate 'Deja Vu' in 2021, and I hoped there might be an equally captivating song on Olivia's sophomore album. Sure enough, it was the second single once again! 'Bad Idea Right?' has been compared to Wet Leg on here, and I'm just going to say it is a much better version of everything I have heard from Wet Leg. It goes from strength to strength, the talking verses to the pre-chorus ahhhhs and the buildup to the raging, rocking chorus. The video is quite fun too! Chart-wise, it suffered a bit from being in the shadow of 'Vampire', not even making the top 10 on pop radio in the US. But 'Deja Vu' had a similar fate, and as a result was never overplayed, so both of my faves still sound pretty fresh. Either way, Olivia's the second artist to spend three consecutive months at #1 on my chart, with one for 'Vampire' and the other two for this. It was last done in 2016 by Ariana Grande, with two months #1 for 'Into You' followed by one for 'Side To Side'. I'm so proud of Olivia for staying true to 90s-influenced pop-rock, and avoiding the sophomore slump that others have had. It was an easy choice for my #1 this year, and definitely NOT a bad idea. wink.gif

Great to see Olivia at #1! The rockier switch-up worked a treat for her and 'bad idea right?' followed on nicely from 'vampire'. My other favourites from your top 20: 'Out Of Nowhere', 'Trustfall', 'Lost', 'Rush', 'Giving Me' and most of all 'Houdini'. Well done for completing 10 years of EOYs!
