This elimination style format qualifying will be taking place in Australia with the original format where they'll be the last driver standing at the end of Q3.

First practice starts tonight. I'm hoping this season Ferrari would put more of a fight to Mercedes and it's not another one team battle for the championship.

I have a feeling it will be closer and Vettel will win 5, maybe 6 races? I also think it'll be closer between the 2 Mercedes drivers and we may actually see Nico beat Lewis in a straight fight. Hope I'm wrong & it's a Hamilton vs. Vettel shootout for the title.
McLaren I expect will be crap yet again... |

New Quali format being ripped apart then, can't say I didn't see that coming!
As I read more into it it did seem a potentially intriguing prospect but it just simply doesn't work in practice with super soft tyres & minimum fuel. The whole idea around mixing up the grids itself is a notion I disagree with as it makes the sport artificial. The fastest cars should always be the fastest cars in Quali on merit alone, that's the way its been ever since the sport began. |

Should just bring single lap quali back. Less tyres and fuel used. Pure skill and if she happens, as it often does, you end up with drivers being punished for mistakes and good card at the back when it rains. The best format

The one downside of one-lap quali is drivers who go out later have a huge advantage as the track is rubbered in by that point so there's really little chance of a surprise pole unless like you say the big dogs make an error.
Also I'll miss cars scrapping for track position like they do at the moment. |

I wasn't against the new format but to be honest it was a disaster. I guess they will try this at 2-3 more races and afterwards go back to the old format. I can't see this working proparly anytime.

Oh it's going to get dropped before even the next race I'm almost certain of. To be honest, I didn't think there was anything inherently weak about the one they've using since 2006 (barring a few little tweaks). All the talk of mixing up the grids has nothing to do with the qualifying structure but of the teams not catching up to Mercedes. I was pretty disappointed with Ferrari based on that display, hopefully they'll be more competitive in long-run race situations.

There were elements I liked about that qualifying, I liked the focus on the smaller teams and it would work better if we got a battle for every elimination like we did when two drivers jumped up (Hulkenberg was one I think) to eliminate Alonso at about 12th place. But so many teams seemed to get their timings completely wrong, and then the ending obviously didn't work either.
I think I read somewhere that one-lap qualifying brought the lowest viewing figures in the recent decade or two so I doubt they'd ever go back to that, but if they did they should draw the order they run randomly rather than in championship order to avoid the rubbering-in advantage for the later cars as Dobbo says. I'd like to see them try this new qualifying once more, but there would need to be a graphic overhaul with an X Factor drama style massive countdown clock and a split screen on the two drivers currently fighting it out for whatever position is being eliminated and/or change the 1 elimination of 1 driver every 90 seconds to 1 elimination of 2 drivers every 180 seconds as this (on most tracks) would mean that when the red countdown clock is on them then they still have the time to do an outlap and a fast lap which they didn't have time to do in 90 seconds. Anyhow, very intrigued with how Force India can take advantage of their free tyre choice starting inside the top 10! |

So happy the race delivered! Like with every time the Mercs get a bad start we get a real spectacle but the Ferrari's really put up a lot closer fight than was looking likely which is a good sign - think they'd have got the win had they switched Vettel onto a set of mediums but hey ho hindsight and all. Terrifying crash for Alonso but glad he simply walked from that. Verstappen the most entertaining driver, picking up from where he left off last season. Hats of to Haas too, great to see a new team not make up the numbers at the back for once

I've seen bits of the race. Alonso's crash was a scary motherf***er. I am so glad that he walked away from that.
Pleased with our performance. Palmer put a good performance in for his first go. Fought well at the first corners and then did well holding off the STRs. Our engine seems to be a good step forwards this year. All looking good for a strong 2017. Shame Kmag picked up a puncture at the start or we may have snuck a point. |
