BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions

Posted by: SevenSeize 31st October 2020, 05:55 PM

Ariana Grande's positions should remain at #1 on the singles chart, with a few other tracks from her album looking to enter the Top 10. New releases include Dua Lipa & Angèle's Fever and Meduza & Dermot Kennedy's Paradise

Ariana looks to complete the chart double as her sixth album positions lands this week. Sam Smith's third album Love Goes and Cliff Richard's Music...The Air That I Breathe are set for big debuts, while Bring Me The Horizon release their new EP Post Human: Survival Horror (download/streaming only). There's albums from M Huncho/Nafe Smallz, Amy MacDonald, Black Stone Cherry, Eels, Elvis Costello, CamelPhat and Wizkid

Breakdown of the week
- Saturday: Some information may be posted on social media but it is likely to be missing most streaming data and is unrepresentative.
- Sunday: Official First Look Chart on Radio 1 from 6-7pm. Please do not post spoilers on the forum in advance as this ruins the countdown for any listeners.
- Monday: OCC Top 100 from 5:45pm
- Tuesday: Top 40 update as and when we receive them with requests, this is NOT 100% guaranteed however. The OCC may publish sales flashes of their own accord but likewise, this is not guaranteed. Twitter and social media is your friend for today. Please post any information you find with a source. Do not nag for updates, we will post a top 40 update if we receive one.
- Wednesday: Top 40 update from Music Week from 5:45, and potential top 5 sales but this is not guaranteed.
- Thursday: See Tuesday.

Other notes (please read)
- You may make requests Tuesday to Thursday but outside the top 40, specific positions will not be revealed (unless deemed necessary by a mod).
- Please do not demand a midweek update, one will be posted as and when we receive the information. Patience is a virtue.
- Sales information will be given out as deemed necessary by a moderator, please bear this in mind when making requests. Most requests for sales will be ignored. Any chart requests between No. 41 to 100 will not be answered after Monday's update.
- To keep everyone in the loop of all chart action, please refer to the iTunes and Spotify threads.

Was there no First Look today?
EDIT: OOPS it's still Saturday i just realised sorry!

Posted by: Blade 31st October 2020, 08:46 PM

I'm not sure about Ariana's physical situation now as they didn't have any in Tesco earlier (but did have Sam Smith, so releases were updated) and cqmerqn said in the Ari AF that he didn't see any in HMV yesterday sad.gif not sure how orders from her site will work, mine hasn't dispatched yet anyway

Posted by: JosephStyles 1st November 2020, 06:05 PM

Break Up Song was out of the top 20 in the first midweeks of its second week so Sweet Melody's still doing better, and I think it could recover a bit as the week goes on too?

Posted by: chrissmith276 1st November 2020, 06:06 PM

Wasn't expecting such a big drop for LM but guess BUS was the same. Hopefully will stabilise later in week.

Posted by: caseclosed 1st November 2020, 06:06 PM

Pretty sure it’ll climb into the Top 15 as the week goes on.

Highly doubt it since it’s nearly Top 10 on AM, will probably go back into the Top 20 on Spotify soon especially when it’s moved up on HHUK (it’s 27 now) and the album release this Friday will push it.

Not ‘pitting female artists against each other’ at all! We’re comparing Ariana to her peers... there is a nuanced difference.

There music is completely different from each other though so I don’t think the comparison is needed tbh.

Posted by: Jade 1st November 2020, 07:26 PM

It feels like it happens a little too often for my liking on a wider scale (not just Ariana, off the top of my head the Little Mix vs. Kylie thread was exhausting to read, although 'stan war' toxicity definitely comes into play too) - so this just felt like another example of it. Fair enough if you didn't mean it to be that way.

As someone who doesn’t really Stan or follow Ariana or Miley and they aren’t really my kind of thing I just find it hard to understand why Ariana immediately jumps to number one with (nearly) every release whereas Miley makes great songs and has to rise slowly.

I do like some earlier Ariana releases like ‘Break Free’, ‘One Last Time’ and the fantastic ‘No Tears Left To Cry’. All great pop songs. Maybe I don’t like the more urban leaning releases if that makes sense.

I hope 'motive' can stay top 20, the best and (only) good song from Ariana's album.

No Tears Left To Cry was indeed very good. Unfortunately, a lot of her most recent songs have been fairly mediocre. By contrast, I would agree that Miley Cyrus's most recent work (the last two or three years) has been the best of her career. Still, what do we know? laugh.gif

I really liked “Love Me Harder” but of course that struggled to number 48. There really isn't anything wrong with that of course, but I've just accepted that I am old and completely out of touch with what is popular. laugh.gif

I should add that the blatant misogyny that often accompanies the criticisms in here (and elsewhere on the internet) DOES make me feel uncomfortable sometimes.

I'm not coming for anyone's taste btw - I'm about as far from a music snob as you can get tongue.gif there have just been issues with pitting females and casual sexism in here in the past, which really put me off from posting, so I feared it was cropping up again. That's totally fair and many people agree that the 'sweetener' singles are her best. I would agree 'no tears left to cry' is a career highlight wub.gif and 'Love Me Harder' was slept on for sure Doctor B - thankfully top 10 in the U.S.

Love Me Holder is Gold certified, that's more than what a few of her top 10 hits got (Boyfriend, Focus, Imagine, Needy, Stuck With U), more of a sleeper hit really.

Posted by: Sour Candy 2nd November 2020, 07:18 AM

With ease probably, she's adding quite a lot daily as streaming catches up.

Posted by: Jade 2nd November 2020, 04:52 PM

My copy from her store hasn't been dispatched yet and I'm not sure if any of them have

Hopefully it does before the end of the tracking week sad.gif

Posted by: Anth 2nd November 2020, 04:52 PM

I was expecting more.. maybe Sam Smith could potentially overtake

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 2nd November 2020, 04:52 PM

I reckon Bring Me The Horizon would be #1 in today's update if their physicals were out this week

Posted by: LewisGT 2nd November 2020, 04:53 PM

I was expecting Sam to be #1 in the albums so I'm delighted that Ari is already top. The copies from her store still haven't shipped so hopefully there's still plenty of sales to be added.

Posted by: Jade 2nd November 2020, 04:54 PM

My 'positions' single wasn't dispatched until Thursday of last week so hopefully it's just a later in the week situation again

Posted by: Sour Candy 2nd November 2020, 04:55 PM

So Cliff definitely won't be #1. Quite low for all three

Posted by: Jade 2nd November 2020, 04:57 PM

The lack of vinyl format for this is annoying btw - I easily would've snapped one up

Posted by: Maestro 2nd November 2020, 05:03 PM

Has Capaldi broken the consecutive top 10 weeks record yet, if he hasn’t I think he might struggle to get back there this week?

Posted by: SevenSeize 2nd November 2020, 05:03 PM

Ariana must have a ton of sales of missing? obviously she'll be #1 regardless but those numbers seem way too low..

would be good if BMTH can snatch a top 5 place without physical copies!

Posted by: shindymindy 2nd November 2020, 05:03 PM

Those album sales are a lot lower than I thought they would be.

I thought Sam would have more pre-orders

Posted by: Mr. C. Joel 2nd November 2020, 05:05 PM

Wow shocked at the album sales.

Genuinely thought both would have been on around 20k at least.

Posted by: Cognizant 2nd November 2020, 05:05 PM

Jesus Christ I wasn’t expecting such low sales for Ari and Sam. Echoing what others have said and hoping it’s just a ‘things haven’t shipped yet’ and ‘streaming hasn’t been accounted for’ situation.

Posted by: Dan17F1 2nd November 2020, 05:06 PM

Those number for Ariana and Sam are so much lower than i expected, hopefully its just a case of missing sales. I would think U2 will over take Dizzee Rascal and David Bowie, i think dizzee will fall a good bit by the end of the week.

Posted by: Jade 2nd November 2020, 05:15 PM

The UK’s best-seller of the week so far in terms of pure sales, Cliff Richard’s 41st studio album Music… The Air That I Breathe opens at Number 3, and is in line to become Sir Cliff’s 46th Top 10 album.

Cliff needs more fans to stream his music.

Why everyone is so shocked? she's flopping in he US also with this one and her streaming numbers are going really down (especially on today, the 3rd day WW) so... yes it's her not-so-successful-era and everyone has that, hopefully she'll make better music next.

Number 1 only cuz the numbers are so low those weeks she releasing, you can't really denied that to cut in 50% or more likely from your last album is not a flop... also in the US, and the numbers today are nasty WW but hey, I won't think you'll be honest with all those photos in your profile... so enjoy, what do I care, you have your opinion and I have facts smile.gif

It's just such an extreme take. There's such an underwhelming sense of bitterness and anger in your messages as if Ariana has hurt you personally and you're taking overwhelming joy in the MISERY of her chart topping single and album? Poor thing. I think it's fair to say the album isn't selling as well as expected (if these figures are accurate), but to call an era that's going to spawn a #1 single and a #1 album a FLOP is such a reach of a choice of wording.

A flop would be missing top 5, or a single that left no impact on the charts, not an album where every single song went top 30 on streaming on day one. It's an underperformance at absolute worst.

That's a little rude, Jade was being perfectly fair. In what world is a multi week #1 single and a #1 album as well as a potential further top 10 single a flop?! laugh.gif Sales aren't going to be great no matter what, especially with the impending lockdown. Yes it's a fall from Thank U Next but no one continues to just go up and up, every star has an end point.

In regards to the "you have your opinions, I have facts" - just because you dislike the music yourself doesn't mean it's terrible. I think it's a great cohesive album and better than the likes of Sweetener at the very least.

There's no need to be rude, please consider your tone when replying in here.

Ariana will be laughing come the end of the week if she ends on the 30k currently projected. A total that would give her #1 on all but 8 weeks of 2020 so far. Not bad for an album announced less than 2 weeks before it came out, with physicals still not widely available. Ariana's doing well, and to me it sounds like you're trying to justify your own opinion of the album by looking at the sales negatively.

Posted by: Bjork 2nd November 2020, 05:45 PM

but actually if you think about it, Ariana is mostly selling cos of streams, and there's only 2 days of streams on today's mids,
so she'd be able to add at least another 25K from streams

Sam Smith is much more of an under-performance but was sadly expected
don't think Sam has the fanbase anymore, especially the crazy fanbase that buys 5 cassettes and 7 vinyls
even if their label has spent lots of cash on promo and spotify payola, it's not paying off

Btw I’m not the ‘crazy stan’ archetype at all - I’m perfectly capable of thinking rationally. I’m obviously a fan of Ariana and felt an urge to add more of a positive balance on this part of the forum, as there was this slightly uncomfortable aura of wanting her to fail that was being parroted over and over again. I’d maybe understand such a rampant attitude if she was a terrible person (as y’know, actual nonces still get hits), but instead all she’s done is release an album that’s not as in line with the forum’s taste as usual.

Can I just say, except for Wales there is no lockdown on record stores in UK this week so that cannot be used as a excuse for what seem subdued sales from Ariana and Sam.

Shops close the 5th Nov so will hit Kylie and Little Mix the most on their release weeks.

Ariana physicals hurting her and streaming albums would need huge streams and also she has done no promo in UK, so that's likely her downfall so far. It will probably do fine

As for Sam Smith. Well they have surely lost a lot of fans as lots of their promo is about their personal life etc and less about their music as in the past. People can get fed up of all that and turn off. They have had big promo slots of G Norton and Strictly and it doesn't look like it has helped them much

Posted by: Brightest Blue 2nd November 2020, 06:29 PM

How do you know that it hasn’t helped them much? They could’ve been on like 6k for all we know.

I think Positions (in terms of sales /chart run) might be similar to ANTI by Rihanna. That had rather similar opening sales at this point on its chart debut (although it did enter at #7 here!).

The reaction to that album at first by a lot of fans including me was that it wasn’t that great then slowly but surely it begun to click. It stuck around on the charts and ended up getting a cult following. I think Positions the album could be similar. It is an album what gets better once you listen more. Arianas longevity will be the most important thing and I think she’ll definitely manage decent longevity with this. I’m sure Ariana and her team are happy with how well she’s doing though.

Posted by: Mack. 2nd November 2020, 06:48 PM

Y’all have to remember Sam has had multiple delays to their not mention Sam did not have much time for preorders for “Love Goes” barely an month

This entire era was starting very well with DWAS & HDYS being massive hits, then I’m ready and delay utterly destroyed the era’s momentum in the US and their home country, I don’t think Sam is over at the slightest just an massive misstep, Diamonds is literally blowing on ITunes & Apple Music and gaining on Spotify

So clearly UK still see’s Sam appealing, just this pandemic was good for their career, I’m sure they’ll bounce back for SS4

Also Dizzee Rascal making midweek top 10 is a surprise to me. I thought his relevancy in 2020 is non-existent and album will be a massive flop.

Again. Barely one months time while bringing forth another different album after an lengthy delay, if released the original SS3, the sales would’ve been ten times more but whatever.. Sam can easily bounce back after this

I stan Ari, but taking my loon glasses off (is that the correct terminology x) those sales are disappointing. I was expecting her to be much closer to Sweetener’s sales, she might get there in the end. The problem is probs pure sales which must be pretty low, but hopefully when website sales come in they’ll be much healthier! Stick with it pure pop gays, it’s an album wub.gif

Yeah, I think it's actually good that they released an album now as they had to somehow close this era, even if the sales might not be too impressive. Now Sam can move on to the next one and have a success with it. They're definitely not over. I just thought Sam might have a little bit higher pre-orders now, even despite the messy campaign for the last few months.

I don’t think anyone is suggesting Ariana is flopping, more so that the album is, so far, underperforming in comparison to the juggernaut that is Thank U, Next.

I personally think she should have taken a longer break from music to recharge her batteries and come up with a better album. She already had two hits this year and I think looking in retrospect, Ariana will realise that releasing her sixth studio album now wasn’t strategically sound.

Strange the way their album wasn’t up for preorder earlier in the year as it would have racked up quite the preorders with each single release and the delay. Mustn’t have been able to though!

what artist is also on Capitol? Katy Perry
and the album campaigns have been almost a carbon-copy for both Katy Perry and Sam Smith
instead of releasing the album after their big hit, they waited and waited and released bad choices of singles one after the other
dragging the campaign for ages looking for an elusive 2nd hit that never came
and they end with a huge underperformance of an album

Going back to Ariana: I don't think there's much sense comparing 'Positions' to 'Thank U, Next'. Personally, I felt a long time ago that TUN era is her peak era because of how massive it was. Most artists, even the biggest stars with decades-long careers tend to have this one era that is so successfull that it's simply impossible to beat it or replicate. And that doesn't mean they flop after that. They still have number one singles, platinum albums and so on. Just that one extremely massive era is bigger than anything else and happens once in a lifetime. And that's natural. So I knew that next Ariana album won't be as big as TUN before it was even announced that 'Positions' exist. Simply beacause I couldn't imagine a bigger era than 'Thank U, Next'. Maybe there were people who thought that 'Positions' will outsell 'Thank U, Next' but tbh I don't think there were many of them! So I don't think that comparing 'Positions' to TUN is a way to prove that it flopped. Because going with the same logic I can tell you all a fascinating story about Adele career-ending flop in 2015 when her album sold only 23 million copies which was less than what '21' did. Is your 12 times platinum album a flop beacause the previous one is 17 times platinum? And no, I'm not really Ariana fan or something.

Thanks, and again for everyone else... we'll speak in a few weeks time, It's number 1 cuz of luck of competition in general, here and in the US (300 points is enough there while Drake did 670 few months back and was blocked from number 1) but fine... whatever. what a turnaround from "you have your opinion and I have facts". I would suggest that the delivery and attitude are the things that irk most people who replied to you, not the fact you dislike (or how you put it - "hate") the album. You trying to discredit this album by branding it a flop based on incomplete Monday midweeks won't change the fans' opinion. People like what they like and there's no point in arguing about semantics. Maybe you'll have more of a case on Friday evening after full sales are available and you'll get that validation you so desperately seem to seek here but I doubt it.

What I wanted to say is the fact that 'Positions' is not as big as 'Thank U, Next' is not really an argument to prove that it flopped/underperformed because it was never going to be as big.

Will be interesting to see if it has leapt up from its #71 Monday position today. The iTunes #2 is probably only doing about 3k per week and around 10k is needed for the 40, so it will need to beat everything manyes over and stay at that level for several days. It looks to be doing very well at the moment though.

'Thank U, Next' opened with 65k in February 2019. The album era started 3 months earlier and before the album dropped there were already 2 massive number one singles from it. While lead single from 'Positions' was released only a week before the album. So the album came out of nowhere and there wasn't really that much hype and anticipation for it.

With the lack of proper album campaign were we really expecting it to do 65k as 'Thank U, Next' or even 50k? I definitely wasn't. But still its lead will probably spend two weeks at number one plus all 14 songs from the album are currently top 60 on Spotify UK. So if we put it into context I think it's not that bad.

Ari's sales are definitely lower than I was expecting ngl (maybe not helped if website sales haven't been shipped yet?) but there was really no chance it was ever going to do as well as 'thank u, next' - at the end of the day it's still a #1 album with a multi-week #1 single from it, she's doing just fine.

Sam's sales are really a big oof though. If you'd told me the other day Ari would be on 13.5k in the first mids I'd have taken that as a guaranteed #1 for Sam. I really didn't think they had lost this much album sales clout. A shame when this has been easily their best singles run to date.

Posted by: Dircadirca 3rd November 2020, 03:59 PM

I could see Sam doing decently in the long run if only because the album is loaded with 2 years of hits on it that'll retain streams akin to Dua Lipa's first album.

It's interesting how much energy people go into wanting artists to flop just because they don't like the material. A #1 single and album is nowhere near a flop but some of you are unwilling to listen and seem to take pleasure in it "flopping" for some reason. Boredom maybe?

Exactly, it's fine if you don't like the album, it's not her most commercial and I get it. I personally love it but I'm not going to force anyone to feel that way.

I wouldn't even call Justin's recent era a flop and I hated that, and that iirc did worse than what Ariana is doing now. The only real flop from this year is something like Katy Perry (unfortunately).

of course i have heard a Janet B-side, i’m a massive fan of hers and her 1993 Janet album is one of my top 10 albums of all time...
what i meant is that the new Ariana album is trying to sound like the early 90s pop/R&B female singers such as Janet & Mariah while the outcome is nowhere near as good...

Posted by: Tafty 3rd November 2020, 07:22 PM

I think people are ultimately mistaking an under performance for a flop. I'd have definitely said Ari would be closer to about 40k-50k than she's currently projected to do, but I actually think releasing 'positons' a week before kinda sucked hype away a little bit. Casual interest isn't as strong with that as it would be if she came back with another song (something like ntltc or 7 rings etc..) this is a lot more subdued and had she just released the album instead of going with a single a week before, I could definitely have seen a stronger opening week sales for her.

I do think this is going to hold up quite decently in all honesty. So the Madame X comparison is completely and utterly absurd. It's not going to do 'thank u, next' numbers, but it's going to be the usual kind of decline in sales that every major artist has at some point in their career. Some of you are acting like it's over for her, with added bitterness just coz of your personal feelings about the album. It's doing fine, under performing slightly - sure, but it's not a flop.

EDIT: Weren't some of you also claiming tu,n to be a flop, despite it being one of the biggest albums on streaming? laugh.gif

And btw, the Madame X comparisons were in response to people claiming a #1 peak automatically makes something not a flop. For Madonna’s standards in 2019 Madame X did pretty well but is still considered a flop, whereas y’all take offence to us branding Ariana at her peak opening with similar numbers as also a flop... make it make sense

of course i have heard a Janet B-side, i’m a massive fan of hers and her 1993 Janet album is one of my top 10 albums of all time...
what i meant is that the new Ariana album is trying to sound like the early 90s pop/R&B female singers such as Janet & Mariah while the outcome is nowhere near as good...

I don’t think it sounds anything like them, and I’m the biggest Janet and Mariah fan on this site tongue.gif it sounds more like the pretentious PBR&B you’d expect Tinashe and Jhené Aiko to make

Posted by: Tafty 3rd November 2020, 07:32 PM

I don't think this sounds anything like Tinashe at all? Like, nothing at all? The closest to Tinashe for me is 'west side' and even that's just flourishes.

This definitely reminds me of early to mid 90's Mariah (not sure about Janet as I haven't heard any of her albums laugh.gif) and I'm making my way through Mariah's discography now (I'm struggling with this period as they're all blending a bit to me but, we'll see)

Lol, I love R&B and it makes me mad to see this album being branded R&B. It’s just not. And the Ariana stans that have overnight became experts and the authority on what qualifies as R&B upsets me. I don’t even like her pop albums either. Just because something is slow and monotonous does not make it R&B. Vocally yes it’s Mariah inspired but production wise, lyrically, musically there are no other similarities. Certainly not to Janet either.

positions is the Frank Ocean and Jhené Aiko ~vibey~ “R&B”, not real R&B

Thus automatically making it bad and a flop. Great logic. Put down all artists who do anything slightly out of the box and experiment with genres. Stifle creativity.

The toxicity of pop stans. I just can't.

Erm okay... unsure.gif I'm not sure why this is even a discussion, I'm not claiming this is R&B and it wasn't even my point, it's you who want to put this album into a box that you're comfortable with ( "Flop", "not real R&B") and discredit it altogether.

There's a difference between criticism and going out of your way to express dislike and disdain time after time when it's not necessary or appropriate all while dragging other completely irrelevant to the discussion black artists through mud.

I see what you’re trying to do with that edit. Ariana is not black. I mentioned two artists who make a specific modern subgenre of R&B that I’m not a fan that Ariana is clearly trying to replicate, but I love R&B overall... we’re talking about R&B, a black genre, so no surprise those two artists are black. I don’t like that subgenre overall but they do it better than Ariana and receive 1/100th of the recognition

Mariah Carey & Janet r worlds apart musically??? thats weird even though they’re both classified as pop-r&b and they have shared the same songwriters , collaborators throughout their careers ... u have probably to dig in through Janet’s early 90s discography and Mariah’s more upbeat songs from the same period and u’ll get my point...

Eels did despatch yesterday, but it doesn't seem to have helped his chart position. After 2 top 10 albums it's a shame it looks like this one will end up outside the top 20.

Missing streaming will absolutely help her! And if there's missing official store data too, I think Ari should easily manage it unless Sam's team pull out the stops in a huge way.

Posted by: Bjork 3rd November 2020, 08:58 PM

also too bad Sam's vinyls were not synchronised and are out in a couple weeks, if out this week, could have made a difference

That answers the question about the Paul Harvey track then - 50 place jump since yesterday! And has had another strong day on iTunes today (about 8x the number two song)

Surprised Ari didn’t extend her lead. She better get that #1. 😭

Posted by: 365 3rd November 2020, 09:17 PM

I really think despite the low sales, Sam's album will be consistently in the top 10 for the rest of Q4. It will be their lowest seller by quite some way but respectable enough considering the drop in market since their last release.

The surprisingly low figures for Sam's vinyl and cassette might suggest that their official store hasn't submitted all of the data yet?

That's also evidence that Ariana's official store sales haven't been counted yet, because there's still 0 cassette sales (and she has three cassette variants).

Feels like Q4 has well and truly started now. Quite glad for this surprise from Ariana making the week interesting.

I think she will get there with how strong streaming is but we will see if Sam’s team can get enough physicals out to make a difference.

Shocked Diamonds has gone that high! Seems like it's been a gradual increase on album week so perhaps it could hold up well next week? Would be nice for it to sneak a week top 10. Still a successful era for Sam in the end!

Also Levitating needs to get a move on into the top ten! One of the best tracks in the chart atm and the release strategy is going perfectly so far!

Miley probably pushed out of Top 5 by Pop Smoke again by Friday sad.gif

Posted by: Steve201 4th November 2020, 05:56 PM

Great to see the top 4 sales being so strong, top 2 easily over 20-25k and Cliff and Bruce looking at 15-20k.

Monster Mash likely to drop out by Friday now

Posted by: Cognizant 4th November 2020, 05:57 PM

If Positions clears 30k by the end of the week, I’m sure her camp would take that as a disappointing result... a near enough 50% drop from Thank U, Next, released just 20 months ago.

I’m an Ariana fan by the way, and have mellowed to the album after some initial resistance. I’m just analysing the stats and 30k in quarter four is for sure disappointing for an artist of her calibre.

All of the above also applies to Sam Smith as well considering The Thrill Of It All opened with close to 100k three years ago, with just one big hit preceding it.

Also, any idea where King Harry is with Golden?

Posted by: JosephStyles 4th November 2020, 05:59 PM

#44 for Harry with 3 Halloween songs above it, hoping it makes it in!

Posted by: Steve201 4th November 2020, 06:00 PM

I think any artist this year will find it hard breaking 50k that Lady Gaga got so you have to place it in context.

I mean Bruce did it last week? I would have thought Ariana would have been the artist to knock it out of the park tbh.

Posted by: Steve201 4th November 2020, 06:04 PM

But I guess there was a lot less preorders with the quick release campaign compared to the others. Of the singles are popular maybe it’ll sell well over a few weeks/months.

Posted by: JosephStyles 4th November 2020, 06:05 PM

We can't forget that this Ariana album has had a 1 week build-up. thank u, next had a 3 month build-up, it's really quite different when there's been less time to grab attention. The fact Ariana's on track for ~30k with only one week of hype is impressive, it's only a fraction of the time TUN had!

30k is a great amount for what is almost entirely name power! 30k exactly would be enough for #1 on all bar 9 weeks of the year so far, so it's actually a really strong total in its own right. TUN had two #1 hits out pre-album (both bigger than positions the song, which has still been big of course), and the sales of TUN are pretty much unmatchable. There's nothing to be disappointed about!

I mean is 30k THAT bad for Ariana? Sweetener manager 44k with a lot more promotion and a hit song (I know positions has gone to number 1 but NTLTC was around longer is what I’m saying). I’m also aware thank u, next had 65k (and 3 numbers 1 helped!) but this album was released without hype, it’s a different sound to her more pop albums and is doing just fine. She’s hardly a big album seller anyway and it’s doing better than my everything which also had a number one single to boast.

Disclaimer: I’m a fan and have heard the album

Posted by: Hadji 4th November 2020, 06:27 PM

Hope Meduza can remain top 40

Posted by: Jade 4th November 2020, 06:31 PM

I feel like it’s hard to comment on the success yet without the full picture - there are 0 physical sales from her official store verified at the moment which could be costing thousands of sales sad.gif usually acts with large fanbases attract significant buys this way - I think Selena Gomez for example only clinched #1 because of them being added at the last minute. Little Mix and Kylie are already looking at strong sales next week because both have gone to town with formats to pre-order on their stores during the past couple of months (good on them!) Two of my sales for Ari are currently in the abyss laugh.gif

Posted by: Lomadz 4th November 2020, 06:45 PM

Ari is doing incredible! Some clueless comments on here. If she wants to release a more pop sounds, she can...that will sell more but this is great. Stop bloody knocking artists when an album isn't to your taste.

I don’t think it has to be black or white whether Ari’s doing well or underperforming. I’d say the album’s performance chart wise, by her standards is...ok. Not good given it’s Q4 and she’s following on from TU,N but not bad at ALL. Obviously!

Oh my god are people STILL arguing over a number 1 album being a flop?! I thought it was Wednesday, not still Monday. I dread to think what next week's thread will be like if Kylie or little mix "only" sell 50,000 each by this time next week...during an English lockdown, when most supermarkets aren't bothering to sell new records anymore.

Posted by: Mart123 4th November 2020, 07:26 PM

I agree this thread has been taken over about if it’s a flop or not . When the best selling first week sales of the year have been 50k plus then anything close is not a flop . Don’t know if anyone noticed but there’s a pandemic on 🤣🤣🤣

He is right. And to be quite frank Joseph, we are allowed to call an album an underperformance if we wish. This is a forum where we are allowed to scrutinise everything.

Sorry but 30k is absolutely disappointing. Ariana Grande had a huge hit this year with Lady Gaga, and a minor one with Justin Bieber. She should be doing 40k minimum, even more in quarter four.

It’s also disappointing to see positive opinions about female artists voiced without any resistance on this forum when if we were talking about a hypothetical underperformance from Lewis Capaldi’s second album, everyone would be more likely to brand it an underperformance off the bat.

FYI Ariana is also underperforming in the States too; Positions is currently projected to do 260k, a drop of 100k from Thank U, Next.

Also we are not branding the album a flop, merely an underperformance, please understand the nuance!

You're allowed to call it an underperformance and I'm allowed to debate otherwise (with facts and context that are seemingly being ignored for the sake of like-for-like comparisons). I don't appreciate being told what can and can't happen - I'm well aware, I've been on this site a long time.

Neither Stuck With U nor Rain On Me are on this album. They were huge hits but the positions era began a week before release. Most artists have months-long build-ups for albums. Ariana had one week, and she's still selling 30k. Is it the biggest success ever? No, but it doesn't need to be. It's still a success. Anyone expecting sales similar to TUN were overestimating from the start, hence why, in my eyes, it's not an underperformance. It's sold less than her previous album but that alone does not make it an underperformance, in my eyes at least. Disagree if you wish.

Good to see Ariana extending her lead at #1 once more in singles and albums - looks like the remaining physicals from her store (as I noticed the cassettes jumped from 0 to +1000 yesterday, so some already must have been counted) dispatched today thanks to anecdotal evidence on here, so that should top up her tally nicely for the final numbers. Hope '34+35' can stay at 9 as that would be a unique peak in the top 10 - she's had a lot of #8s laugh.gif and a #10 already with 'Focus'.

Looks like Meduza could be going top 40 tomorrow cheer.gif

Wow at the BBC song being that high. Is Perfect finally gonna drop out this week, or is it gonna sneak back in the top 100?

Is Golden at #41?

Poor sales for Ariana.. might not even clear 30k. Without wanting to get attacked, this is a huge disappointment. The same goes for Samuel.

I never expected Cliff Richard to be as near as he is to Ariana and Sams sales.

Firstly, I just have to say, thanks to all the chart mods and Joseph Styles for their hard work in the chart forum, in the preparation of sales (myself), chart information and all behind the scenes work towards the Friday Chart Show thread every week, a lot of preparation goes into that every week.

If any of your requests don’t get answered its because they are hardly moving in the chart or lingering in the top 75 which sometimes feels its not really necessary, especially requests on a Thursday, when the chart is revealed the following day in full, it doesn’t hurt to wait a day to find that final position. Also bear in mind we are not obligated to give out additional info on Tuesdays and Thursdays as its not available in public view.

Secondly, it is difficult in our current situation, members use Buzzjack as a means of escape and communicate with our existing community it’s about having fun. After reading this week’s latest FCP thread, think of what some members are going through (they could be going through anxiety issues, depression etc etc), you do not need to troll, throw flying insults or have personal attacks at each other it doesn’t make good reading or inviting guests to register with us, and any actions by chart mods or Admins should be observed. Just take a step back and log off for 30 minutes or so.

And finally, next week it’s another chart battle in the albums with Kylie and Little Mix, so try and be patient when asking for requests, they will be given out when available. Any trolling, flying insults, personal attacks will be removed without hesitation at chart moderator’s indiscretion.

Camelphat deserved better.

Very disappointing sales for both Ariana and Sam tbh

Just going to say it....

Cliff Richard deserves the number 1 spot in the album chart
Fans have bought his album to listen to him and enjoy him .
Ariana passive Spotify playlist fans make up a lot of her sales let's be honest....

Just my view.

To think some thought Ariana might stop Kylie and Little Mix in her second week!

Sales in general are beyond awful though.

Posted by: krissykins 5th November 2020, 10:06 PM

Little Mix being 13 is fab. Hopefully it increases soon.

Arrggh I was being so careful when writing it trying to use Sam rather than he/she/they as I always stumble on it! Thanks for pointing it out have edited it.
