Why this chart, I don't here you ask? Simple - it was the last Christmas No1 that wasn't a charity song (2004) or from a talent show (2005 onwards).

1: Mad World - Michael Andrews fetauring Gary Jules

2: Christmas Time (Don't Let The Bells End) - The Darkness

3: Changes - Ozzy and Kelly Osbourne

4: Proper Chrimbo! - Bo Selecta!

5: Happy Xmas (War Is Over) - The Idols

Just think: this was meant to be 2003's Christmas No1.

6: Leave Right Now - Will Young

7: Shut Up - Black Eyed Peas

8: Ladies Night - Atomic Kitten

It's hard to tell which cover was more ill-advised: this or No11.

9: I'm Your Man - Shane Richie

10: Too Lost In You - Sugababes

11: Signed Sealed Delievered (I'm Yours) - Blue featuring Stevie Wonder and Angie Stone

12: Feelin' Fine - Ultrabeat

13: Santa's List - Cliff Richard

14: Mandy - Westlife

15: Have A Cheeky Christmas - Cheeky Girls

16: Hey Ya! - Outkast

17: The Closest Thing To Crazy - Katie Melua

18: My Immortal - Evanescence

19: Swing Low - UB40

20: Jump - Girls Aloud

sales information from Music Week...

(-) 1 227,500 Gary Jules - Mad World
(-) 2 222,500 The Darkness - Christmas Time
(1) 3 144,800 Kelly & Ozzy Osbourne - Changes
(-) 4 97,000 Bo Selecta - Proper Crimbo
(-) 5 73,000 The Idols - Happy Xmas (War Is Over)

(-) 8 28,000 Atomic Kitten - Ladies Night
(-) 10 27,000 Sugababes - Too Lost In You
(-) 12 20,300 Ultrabeat - Feelin' Fine
(-) 25 10,000 Fast Food Rockers - I Love Christmas
(-) 26 9,600 Billy Mack - Christmas Is All Around

The Darkness were at #1 all week and lost out on Saturday sales - one of the closest battles for Christmas #1 in recent times (the other being in 1998 when the Spice Girls beat Chef by 7,000 copies, 380,000 to 373,000 copies sold).

Oh man, I truly hated that song so much. So awful.

I was very thankful The Darkness didn't get #1 this week.

Same here, the way Justin Hawkins was showing off on the ITV news on release week, when their in store was shown has me really in a really angry state, and wanted them not to get #1.

The things he said and got away with it:- "Gary 'Wiener' Jules" and something about covering a Tears for Fears song being wrong, but said it in a really inappropriate way.

I so would have loved that to have been Christmas No1 in 1998.

Chef: "Suck on my chocolate salty balls. Stick 'em in your mouth and suck 'em."
BBC Announcer: "And now, the Queen's speech."

That Chef is a legend!!!, I couldn't believe Richard and Judy Madley on This Morning at the time compared it to George Michael's "Outside" and slagged it off!! mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif .

It should have been xmas #1 like you say biggrin.gif.

"They're high in fibre and good for you, so suck on my balls!!!".

Ozzy/Kelly, Jules/Michaels and Darkness sold enough in those few weeks to be in that year's top 20.

And how on earth "Ladies night" was placed higher than "Too lost in you" it's beyond human understanding.

I remember Simon Cowell saying that not only would it be Christmas #1, it would be the biggest selling single of the year laugh.gif

Not a very good top 10 really. I only like the Will Young and Sugababes songs.

Massive sales (at least by today's standards)! Top 2 both over 200k - the only instance of this in recent years. 73k for #5 - would've been enough for #1 most weeks that year. 27k for #10 - enough for #1 some weeks this year. 10k for #25 - just 5 weeks later this would be enough for top 10! Bear in mind that these were purely physical sales as well.

I really liked Mad World at the time because of Donnie Darko- but, in retrorespect, the Gary Jules version of Mad World wasn't very good really. But it did stop the Darkness getting to number one, which is very good indeed. dance.gif

I think the best track on that chart by far is Too Lost In You by Sugababes.
