The Official Top 10 biggest songs Ed Sheeran wrote for other artists on the Official UK Chart
08 July 2021 | By Jack White

With 10 UK Number 1 singles and 45 Top 40 hits on the Official Chart, Ed Sheeran sure knows how to make a hit record, and he's not opposed to giving some away either.

As songs written by Ed with BTS (Permission To Dance) and Maisie Peters (Psycho) are released, we delve into his writing discography to unearth the Official Top 10 biggest songs he has penned for other artists. You can find the full Top 10 table at the bottom of the article, but first, a look at some highlights.

Jessie Ware - Say You Love Me
Released: 2014
Chart sales: 507,000
While 2020 saw Jessie Ware claim her best albums chart position so far, Ed Sheeran helped her earn her biggest singles chart hit six years prior, and even helped out on backing vocals. Jessie teamed up with Ed and Benny Blanco (more on him later) for Say You Love Me, which after some heavy rotation on radio resulted in Jessie's second Top 40 and highest-peaking single to date on the Official Chart. Say You Love Me is certified Gold and the most popular song of Jessie's career, racking up 41.4 million streams.

One Direction - Little Things
Released: 2012
Chart sales: 1.05 million
Ed Sheeran's first Top 10 single writing for another act was a biggie - Little Things was only the second Ed-penned track not recorded by him, and was taken all the way to the Official Chart top spot by One Direction. The much-publicised penning did a lot for Ed's career (and 1D's) and resulted in 542,000 downloads and 59.3 million streams to date.

Bonus fact: The trailblazer of Ed Sheeran co-writes was in fact Olly Murs with his 2010 album track Love Shine Down ft. Jessie J.

Benny Blanco ft. Halsey & Khalid - Eastside
Released: 2018
Chart sales: 1.85 million
Producer for the likes of Katy Perry, Maroon 5 and Rihanna, Benny Blanco launched his artist career in 2018 and he couldn't have gotten off to a better start. Reuniting with Ed on writing duties while drafting in Halsey & Khalid on vocals, Benny's debut single Eastside went to Number 1 on the UK's Official Singles Chart and boasts the most streams for an Ed Sheeran co-write that Ed himself didn't sing. In total the British public have streamed Eastside a gargantuan 247.2 million times.

Justin Bieber - Love Yourself
Released: 2015
Chart sales: 2.77 million
Far and away the most downloaded song that Ed Sheeran gave away to another artist, Justin Bieber's Love Yourself is the Number 1 ranked song on our rundown with 2.77 million combined chart sales split between 217.4 million streams and 735,000 downloads.

Ed helped Justin make history with Love Yourself in January 2016, which when it topped the charts led an all Justin Top 3, the first time an artist had held Numbers 1, 2 and 3 simultaneously. Inspired by his own handy work for someone else, Ed would go onto break that record in March 2017, claiming every spot in the Top 6!

10 songs that are all solid 0/10 biggrin.gif

I can definitely see why he gave away most of those songs whistle.gif

(although I still unapologetically love 'Little Things' despite its objective naffness)

I wouldn't have publicised my hand in writing Little Things so much if I were Ed but hey I guess it worked for him.
That's a nice confirmation of Thursday passing 1m units too *.*

Rita Ora's song is terrific but the rest... not so much.

What a terrible list of songs sick2.gif

Posted by: Mangø Jul 8 2021, 04:28 PM

Well this is Buzzjack so of course everyone's going to slate these songs laugh.gif for what it's worth 'Little Things' is my least favourite out of those, I just never got the love for that song. I'd happily listen to any of the others though and 'Your Song' is probably my highlight wub.gif

I quite like a lot of Ed Sheeran songs that he sings himself but my God these are all atrocious (*)ohmy.gif Its like a list of worst hits of the decade

* Eastside is ok. Good vocalists. And dont know the Jessie Ware one

Posted by: JackTheeStallion Jul 8 2021, 05:31 PM

I really like Eastside oops, I forgot it's hated so much.

Posted by: T Boy Jul 8 2021, 05:58 PM

I’ve never rated Ed Sheeran as a songwriter and looking at this list couple with his actual discography, it’s clear why.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Jul 8 2021, 06:02 PM

I suppose it comes to something when I consider 'Your Song' the best of the bunch!

I really didn't need to be reminded 'Eastside' exists either.

Posted by: chartjack2 Jul 8 2021, 06:09 PM

Well I love Love Yourself - don’t hate me haha

Posted by: Dot Branning Jul 8 2021, 06:17 PM

Lurking Sheeran, I despair at you for inflicting some of these on us.

Eastside is decent though, a million miles from the best thing its vocalists have appeared on but I did like it at the time.

I'd say most of them are just mediocre and overplayed rather than outright bad (with the exception of '2002' which is really a war crime) but yeah, even as someone who usually likes Ed's own music this is not a good bunch of songs.

'Say You Love Me' is... possibly my least favourite Jessie Ware song? laugh.gif

'Your Song' is actually fairly good too (one of Rita's better songs) but that and 'Little Things' are really the only songs on here that I wouldn't groan a little at hearing come on the radio.

Woman like me is Little Mix best song.

Possibly I exaggerated, although would definitely add 'Strip that Down' (shudder!) to the crimes against humanities as well as '2002'. Plus the lyrics of 'Thursday' mixed with Jess Glynne (knowing what we do about her personality) is a toxic combination!

Posted by: Dot Branning Jul 8 2021, 09:23 PM

Thursday is unbearable.

Careful, you'll get thrown off the site for admitting to liking those songs!

Their worst single by a mile sick2.gif

Eastside, Cold Water and Your Song are all better than most of Ed's own stuff. Say You Love Me is great but not a personal fave of mine for Jessie. The rest are somehow worse than most of Ed's stuff lmao.

Didn't Jess Glynne write Woman Like Me for herself until Syco practically wrestled it out of her hands?

I swear she was in various interviews talking about how much she loved it and wanted it for herself and her demo was circulating the net at the time too?
