BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ YTD T100 Albums (with estimated sales)

Posted by: vidsanta 29th December 2018, 08:22 AM

V2 :

YTD Sales : Please read these guidelines before you request sales estimates, it makes my task a lot easier.

1. Be specific - please name the artist and title for each entry you'd like an estimate for.
2. I log sales for all albums that have charted this year, but only update those that have sold enough to reach my 200 position tracking range
3. If an album isn't in the current Top 100, I won't be able to update its sales until Tues. Also, please don't ask about ex-T100 albums too often - once a month at most)
4. Remember to check the thread before requesting estimates - they may already have been answered. Also, no more than half-a-dozen requests at a time, thanks.
5. Please note my figures are combined sales & streams, and since I have no way of separating them, I cannot provide a split.
6. While I am no longer estimating singles sales, I can provide YTD singles positions from C+, and I am still maintaining my sales archive based on published figures (PM me if you want to see it)

Thank you.

Is that 2018s sales then or do they count next week?

Quite happy with my November estimate for Staying at Tamaras - it'll be over 700k by Monday and I predicted 750k!!

Since 28-31st Dec is four days, i.e. a majority of a week, then theoretically there should be a 53rd week counting towards 2018 thinking.gif

Posted by: Christmasteve201 29th December 2018, 11:45 AM

I would say the OCC will count Friday 28th - Thursday 2/1/19 as the first week of 2019 or perhaps due to the majority of days being in 2018?

Posted by: milly 29th December 2018, 11:52 AM

Well, Take That are in top 10 - you can't place them outside top 10 just because of the alphabetical order. They are gonna overtake Eminem, anyway, this week.
10th place should contain 2 artists and then put on the 11th place the one with the next sales.

Posted by: pippa 29th December 2018, 12:36 PM

Yes, i would think Take That are ahead of Eminem even if just slightly.

My raw data has TT ahead by ~400, but I normally reckon on a 0.25% error margin in my YTD figures...

I think that this is it for 2018. Looking historically any chart dated 10th January (as this Friday's will be) have been Wk 1 of the new year not Wk 53 of the previous one. See 2004, 2009 and 2015 as evidence dance.gif

IF the OCC is being consistent of course......

Ah, but the chart date switched from Sunday to Friday, so not really comparable...

ASIB comfortably #7, yay! Should be able overtake both B&B and Scorpion early next year.

I'm thinking we won't get the Y/E charts from the OCC until Friday then and that they'll include this week (which means the singles one will be different to the one R1 announced drama.gif)

I’m sure the last few years they’ve posted the End of Year charts on New Years Eve.

It wouldn't matter to most, no - but I'd like to know whether to close out my 2018 spreadsheets this week or next, as it's a fiddly process.

Well I suppose we'll know by Friday but going by history then the chart last Friday was the last of 2018, that's what I meant. dance.gif

Technically this is Week 1, so I don't know where you are getting Week 53 from, this is why I'm thinking that's it for 2018. I'm thinking those last 4 days belong into 2019, I don't know how OCC accommodate for the chart since its sales are from Friday to Thursday.

Anyway we see what OCC come up with when the charts get updated.

MW site has the midweeks database set up as Week 1 for this week, not really that difficult to grasp biggrin.gif

By my reckoning, the next occasion there'll be a "Week 53" situation is 2020 (25th December 2020 to 31st December 2020 being Week 53, with the chart revealed on 1st January 2021).

They really are. Albums just aren’t important to people anymore. They still are to me but I think artists will start marketing themselves with just singles sooner rather than later.

Posted by: Christmasteve201 1st January 2019, 06:09 PM

That's true - I mean we had 5 singles from the 1975 for example and then the album in a busy sales week symbolising the changing record label tactics!

Posted by: Bré 1st January 2019, 06:09 PM

People have been saying that every year since like 2007. It doesn't translate to numbers being as high as in the pure sales era but the advent of streaming has actually made the concept of an album more important again I think, artists want people to put on what's basically just a playlist of songs by that artist since they get paid per song stream. See Drake releasing an album that he literally referred to as a 'playlist' (there's not really much of a distinction any more).

What might become more common I think is the strategy The Chainsmokers have used for their current 'album' era, where they've just basically been drip feeding a series of singles and gradually building up an album/playlist from those. (Not that this has brought them much commercial success but someone will do it more successfully eventually probably)

In case anyone is still unsure of the final UK Charts of 2018.

The OCC tell me that the current UK Charts - W/E 3rd January 2019 - are the last Charts for 2018.
With a Sales 'Cut-Off' Date of Thursday 27th December 2018.

The 1st UK Charts of 2019 are those for W/E 10th January - even though 4 Days of their Sales were in 2018.

Shit, Drake and Post Malone are basically obsolete when it comes to CD/vinyl. Hip hop fans DO NOT CARE about physical albums.

Posted by: Bré 3rd January 2019, 01:54 AM

Hip-hop appeals to a younger audience in general and younger audiences buy less CDs. (See also how Eminem has a higher physical percentage, because he's been around so long so he has an older fanbase than more recent rappers). Also those two albums will have a very high percentage of sales from streaming which I guess is counted in the 'digital' percentage, the difference might be less stark if it was just looking at downloads vs. physical sales for each album.

Don’t know why, her 2009 album outsold their 2009 album.

In fact, generally, she’s always been a more consistent seller, she just hasn’t had their highs.

Posted by: Bré 3rd January 2019, 01:58 PM

Not sure AM were particularly aiming for another gigantic selling album, would have been easy for them to follow the same formula as their last album and probably have one of the biggest albums of the year but they chose to go in a more experimental direction instead.

I know this is only about albums, but I'm amazed how well George Ezra's done on the singles front. I was certain he'd struggle for a hit in the streaming era, particularly after "Don't Matter Now" bombed, but he's proven all doubters wrong with two of the ten biggest songs of the year!
