The first thing I have to note is that this is a very difficult to predict list, as unlike the OCC, ARIA are not prone to publish anywhere near enough data to parse this out in advance, and of course who knows how much data they actually get. I am pleased to say that they are certainly using data beyond the top 100 chart, although I can't say for certain if it goes beyond top 500, or for that matter, if all songs/albums genuinely have all their sales counted, given that once a song leaves the top 500 for long enough, ARIA take it off their chart until it's re-submitted (for instance, Tame Impala's "The Less I Know The Better" was missing from the chart for most of 2019, despite already being a charting hit in 2015/2016). It's possible that several songs here are being underweighted if they've had 0 sales attributed to them since leaving the chart. I also think that it's possible Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" could have cracked this list, but famously, it never charted here because record companies be wilin'.

As for the list itself, it reflects a very shifted music market. The height of digital sales in Australia were around 2012-2014, where it became regular for the #1 single to sell in the range of about 35-45,000, whereas in 2010, you could expect a #1 single to move maybe 15,000-20,000 copies, and in 2019 with streaming, it's also only around 20,000. Of course, the latter is supplemented with longevity, but on the other hand, there's also not enough time to make those margins. So while I think 2019 may prove itself to be a year of monster hit singles, there are actually only 2 2019 tracks in the top 100, "Old Town Road" and "Dance Monkey" (though if you want to be technical, the former was released in late 2018). In stark contrast, with digital sales rising at the end of last year, there were about 20 2009 hits in the 2000s End Of Decade list, including "I Gotta Feeling" ranking all the way up at #3 with just 6 months on sale. Obviously this can be attributed to catalogue selling/streaming being more prevalent this decade (you can't keep buying deleted physical singles after all), but I suspect even if you cut off these songs when they left the top 100, 2019 wouldn't fair a whole lot better. Also if we want to look at serious escalation, the #100 single "Cosby Sweater" has sold more than the #1 single of the 2000s, "Angels Brought Me Here" by Guy Sebastian, while Guy figures at #19 with "Battle Scars" which has sold twice as much as his Australian Idol coronation hit. Furthermore, Eminem had the longest running #1 hit of the 2000s with "Lose Yourself", which wound up at #7 for the 2000s, but has sold even more in the 2010s and lands at #88, despite never having re-entered the top 50 weekly chart this decade. I've been following the iTunes chart closely, especially in the last 4 years and I'm fairly sure it's been the biggest catalogue selling single on iTunes this decade (I scarcely ever see it lower than #300), though its streams are not too shabby either. Another noteworthy catalogue seller has been Christina Perri's "A Thousand Years". Initially just a moderate follow up success to the much bigger "Jar Of Hearts", it has well and truly eclipsed its predecessor and ranks at #46 here, which is a big jump up for a song that only ever made the End Of Year top 100 once, where it ranked #67 for 2012.

I will admit that I have probably relied too much on trusting certifications when tracking the progress of some of these songs. As you can plainly tell through looking at this list, they don't really match up to the order, but it's not clear if that's because of some songs not being updated, some songs having sales not correctly attributed to their rankings here, or also possibly the certifications are just flat out incorrect. So I was expecting "Uptown Funk" to be #1 here, even though its 17xPlatinum certification has always looked a little sketchy, I've just accepted it has to be right, but maybe it isn't. Nonetheless, I would say it was not at all a sure bet that Ed Sheeran's "Shape Of You" would take the top spot, it's impressive that it's managed to catch up to all the big digital hits in just under 3 years. I wouldn't be surprised if it only recently took the podium. Gotye at #2 is actually rather surprising too. Maybe contextually you'd think he's a no brainer, but back in 2011, he was the Tones And I to LMFAO's Lil Nas X, where we had a local hit absolutely demolish the chart in the latter half of the year, but it was destined to always end up as the year's 2nd biggest seller because another hit did the same thing but with a few more months advantage to rack up sales. History is yet to be written for Lil Nas X and Tones And I, it's possible the latter could stall out and never actually catch up to the former, but it felt like watching the chart, Gotye never came close to overtaking LMFAO when they were charting, leaving them an asymptote that could never be caught even if Gotye outsold them every single week for the rest of the decade (which from 2013 onward, he probably was), or so I thought. But LMFAO only figuring in at #4 & #24 shows just how important those catalogue sales really are. Another example of this is Flo Rida, who for all his dominance at the start of the decade, only figures in twice with "Wild Ones" and "Whistle" at #78 & #80. To give some context to this, a few months into 2013, radio station Nova counted down the top selling singles on iTunes of all time, and those two singles finished at #17 and #11, ranks that I wouldn't be surprised if they still closely retain given that the ceiling for how much a song can sell on iTunes has only gotten lower and lower since. Matt Corby's hit "Brother" which peaked while "Wild Ones" was sitting at #1 was only #47 on that countdown, but has also since overtaken the two Flo Rida songs to finish at #68. Also to put in perspective how potentially lucky Ed Sheeran was here, we need only look at 2018, which only figures 7 songs in this list. The #1 seller then, "Youngblood" retains its title, but only lands at #37. The two notoriously never leaving hits in "Eastside" and "Sunflower" also only make it to #58 & #61, despite the former being the #10 best seller for 2018 & #12 best seller for 2019 (Las Ketchup managed #5 & #8 in back to back year end lists and finished at #11 on the 2000s decade list), while "Sunflower" is the longest running top 10 hit of all time, with 7 more weeks in that echelon than "Shape Of You". With these songs thus having their success split across two decades, it is a tragedy that most of us will not live to see an end of century list in 2101 to weigh them up more evenly.

Other assorted curiosities I've noticed:

-"Someone Like You" ranks ahead of "Rolling In The Deep", despite the latter being a bigger iTunes seller both circa 2013 and also in the years since it usually ranks higher, but of course, the former is Adele's 2nd most streamed song on Spotify behind "Hello".
-The lowest peaking singles in the list are "Riptide" (#6), "Diamonds" (#6), "Cheap Thrills" (#6), "What Makes You Beautiful" (#7), "Photograph" (#9), "A Thousand Years" (#13), and I suspect Of Monsters and Men's #7 peaking "Little Talks" was also close, while Angus & Julia Stone's listed also ran "Big Jet Plane" actually peaked at #21
-I have often speculated the close race for what is the highest selling Australian rap single is, which seems to go to "Cosby Sweater", but "1955" is probably close to catching it given how strong its streaming numbers are. Surprisingly, 360's "Boys Like You" and Iggy Azalea's "Fancy" don't figure, both of which could have been the front runner 5 years ago
-Prior to "Dance Monkey", the longest running Australian #1 single in the ARIA era was "Que Sera" by Justice Crew which debuted at #1 and spent 9 consecutive weeks there (blocking "Problem", "Stolen Dance", "Am I Wrong", "A Sky Full Of Stars" and "Chandelier" from all being #1 hits), yet it ranks behind the group's first #1 hit "Boom Boom", which lasted only 2 weeks at the top.
-With 1 week for "Get Lucky" in the middle, "Blurred Lines" just about replaced "Let Her Go" at the top of the charts in 2013, and Thicke would finish ahead of Passenger at #2 & #3 respectively on the 2013 End Of Year chart. Passenger is now 27 places ahead on this list

Now the albums list is a totally different story. You will not be surprised to know that sales have effectively been drifting down gradually every year, a huge advantage to 2010 releases who have higher opening prospects and longer to accumulate sales. It is possible that stream equivalent album sales may eventually provide longevity to allow impressive sales, but there's not been nearly enough time to find this out. As such, no 2019 release, including last year's best seller from Billie Eilish makes this list, with only 3 2018 releases also (Post Malone, "Bohemian Rhapsody" & "A Star Is Born", though to its credit, "The Greatest Showman"'s soundtrack was released just at the end of 2017 and lands quite high at #21). To make another comparison to the 2000s Decade chart, Susan Boyle landed at #18 then with her debut album which was released just 5 weeks before the end of the decade. The #1 position was always going to a 2011 release though, and though I've feared Michael Buble's annual jolt might be enough to catch up to Adele, it would seem that its sales slowed down too much in the past few years and so Adele triumphs. The rest of the top 10 is a fairly obvious affair. It wouldn't be Australia without two P!nk albums in the top 10, while Ed Sheeran's first 3 albums all figure, impressively bucking the trend as they land in reverse chronological order. The two best selling Australian albums are both Greatest Hits sets. First from INXS which initially floundered on the chart (innocuously entering lowly in the top 50 the same week as Ed Sheeran's also innocuous debut for "+"), but went gangbusters in 2014 following an INXS biopic/TV series, and next for Cold Chisel which was released at the start of the decade and has been a strong persistent seller. Gotye figures with the highest Australian studio album, perhaps demonstrating just how much more Australia cares about his music than the rest of the world (I also recently learned that it's not just me who will dispute him being called a one hit wonder, as there was a lot of clapback late last year when a local music site included him in an article about 2010s one hit wonders). Although unlike on the singles chart, he hasn't managed to overtake the hilariously high ranked 2nd LMFAO album. Overall though it's a weird list and I'm spent on words xx
