This is probably the best thread ever to appear here, absolutely brilliant. Thank you for your labour of love.

Fun Fact: I know him so well was written with Anni-Frid and Agnetha in mind, It was amongst the songs Rubberball man/Just a notion/Just like that. At the time Benny and Bjorn felt they just couldn't get the songs to sound the way they wanted and General fatigue amongst the 4 members led to the scrapping of the project, which actually had a name. Of course they dusted it off and revamped it for Chess, just as they did with Just a notion for Voyage. They have stated Rubberball man and Just like that will never see the light of day which is rather sad actually, as they were both very interesting songs and very opposite to each other

Obviously I knew as well as anyone who the top 2 were going to be but I was surprised at just how ahead they were of the rest of the competition ohmy.gif

Thanks for running this Gezza, what a great thread. Thoroughly enjoyed following it!

I presume he meant double A-Sides where the second song never actually got any significant attention in its own right.

Thanks again.

As a lifelong Beatles' fan, I remember hearing All My Loving first at school and then buying A Hard Day's Night as my first 45 a year later, I've taken the liberty of adding a bit of research into the Lennon-McCartney UK No 1s composing success by splitting up their 31 totals by actually who wrote the songs as follows:

Lennon wrote 7 of the songs alone.
McCartney wrote 14 of the songs alone.

They acknowledge that they wrote 7 of the songs together, i.e. 50/50

Lennon principally wrote 4 of the songs with some help from McCartney, i.e., say, 75/25
McCartney principally wrote 3 of the songs with some help from Lennon, i.e., say, 75/25

This produces a McCartney lead over Lennon by 20.75 to 14.25. The total of 35 is explained by the 4 No 1s they each wrote after they split up, somewhat acrimoniously at the time.

An obvious but fantastic top two *.* so many Beatles classics in those lists and I like 'Bad To Me' and 'World Without Love' written for others in the same decade too.

Thanks so much for your outstanding effort as always, Gezza. clap.gif

Sorry I am a bit late to this thread but I was looking at Cathy Dennis ahead of tonight's Top of the Pops - Cathy is at number 32 with 8 number 1s however I make it she has 9 number 1s as a writer.

In February 2004 Sam and Mark got to number 1 with the double a side With A Little Help From My Friends and Measure Of A Man - Cathy Dennis wrote Measure Of A Man.

Cathy therefore has 9 number 1s with a total of 21 weeks at number 1 so jumps 3 places on your list.

QUOTE(Dasher @ Dec 23 2022, 12:06 PM) *
No 3- Max Martin (20)- 51 weeks

Chart toppers:

• Baby One More Time (1999)
• I Want It That Way (1999)
• Ooops I Did It Again (2000)
• I Kissed A Girl (2008)
• So What (2008)
• My Life Would Suck Without You (2009)
• California Gurls (2010)
• Dynamite (2010)
• Domino (2012)
• Part Of Me (2012)
• This Is Love (2012)
• Roar (2013)
• Problem (2014)
• Bang Bang (2014)
• Love Me Like You Do (2015)
• Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored (2019)
• I Don’t Care (2019)
• Beautiful People (2019)
• Take Me Back To London (2019)
• Blinding Lights (2020)

A whopping 20 chart toppers evidence what a mark Max Martin has had on the UK charts, Martin started out in a group called It’s Alive which were signed to Cheiron label so it was a natural home when Martin quit the band in 95 to concentrate on writing. He’s since had a period of 21 years of chart toppers with multiple million sellers.

POP GOD!!

He is the soundtrack to my life tbh. The reason why I became a pop music fan. Legendary career. A lot of his non-#1's are even BETTER than a lot of his #1's.

GOD!

No 25- Barry & Robin Gibb (10)- 24 weeks

Chart toppers:

• Massachusetts (1967)
• I’ve Gotta Get A Message To You (1968)
• Night Fever (1978)
• Tragedy (1979)
• Woman In Love (1980)
• Chain Reaction (1986)
• You Win Again (1987)
• How Deep Is Your Love (1996)
• Words (1996)
• Islands In The Stream (2009)

The other Gibb brothers are clubbed together here having written “Woman In Love” together and thereby having an extra chart topper over Maurice. British born, the brothers emigrated to Australia in the late 50s where they became (eventually) stars in the pop charts down under, but the move back to the UK in 1967 saw them top the charts here in under a year. Having written a No 1 in 5 decades could that be beaten?

It reached No1 originally (1979) so it isn't an additional No 1 under the rules of the thread.
