Chart Analysis

For the first time since June of last year we get three new number ones in as many weeks, and the chart is the most volatile it has been for a long while with 25 entries. The song that manages to kick Above & Beyond off is perhaps not from a song you expected to be a contender, but Rudimental have done it alongside Jess Glynne, Macklemore & Dan Caplan with 'These Days', surging from last week's #10 to #1. Doing the 10-1 is more common than you'd think, but still quite a rarity with it having been done on just five occasions in the chart's 389 week lifespan. Click my statistics page to see the other four times and also all the even larger climbs to the top.

It is another great week for Above & Beyond however, with none of their songs that made the top 40 last week dropping out, and many of them even climbing. Last week's #1 'My Own Hymn' slips down to #3 behind 'Northern Soul' which remains at #2. They score two more top 10 hits this week to bring their total count to seven. 'Alright Now' climbs up to #9 and 'Naked' is up to #10. Both songs feature Justine Suissa, and they become her first two credited top 10 hits (it is worth noting that she also sang on #7 hit 'Another Chance', credited to Above & Beyond presents OceanLab, a project involving her, so these really become her second and third). Their other climbers include 'Happiness Amplified' up to #12, 'Sahara Love' up to #19, 'Is It Love? (1001)' up to #26 and 'Cold Feet' up to #28.

This week's highest new entry comes from the return of Finnish DJ Darude who alongside English DJ Ashley Wallbridge and vocalist Foux enters at #18 with trance hit 'Surrender'. It instantly smashes Darude's previous best peak of #27 which he achieved nearly 3 years ago with 'Beautiful Alien', and becomes his second hit (though his best selling song is, of course, the non-charting 'Sandstorm'). It is the first hit for the other two artists.

After bubbling under for five weeks London DJ Mella Dee enters at #23 with 'Techno Disco Tool'. The song, a nu-disco anthem, becomes Dee's first hit. A place lower we have a new entry from Kiesza who teams up with Chris Malinchak for 'Mother'. Those names are more known in this chart, with it becoming Kiesza's 4th hit and Chris Malinchak's 3rd. The last time Malinchak was in the chart was 4 years ago when 'If U Got It' went to #1. Kiesza was here more recently, last year with #10 hit 'Don't Want You Back'.

The BJSC effect is here for the first time this year and three entries enter straight in the top 40. The highest of these is 'Ghost Voices' by American producer Virtual Self (Porter Robinson) at #36, becoming his 8th top 40 hit, though only his first under the Virtual Self alias. Porter was last seen in the chart in late 2016 with 'Shelter', which also peaked at #36. Egyptian trance act Aly & Fila enter at #37 with 'Quiet Storm', finally giving them a follow-up top 40 single to 'Unbreakable', which was at #1 this time last year, though 'Storm' was actually released prior. The song features English singer Sue McLaren who gets her second hit following her feature on 'Never Ever After' for 4 Strings in 2015, coincidentally also a #37 hit. Rounding out the top 40 are Shanguy with 'La Louze'. They are a group of two French singers (the lyrics are also largely in French) and an Italian DJ and it becomes their first hit here.

Outside the top 40 are new entries from Kojo Funds/RAYE, CANVAS/Andrew Montgomery/Boeoes Kaelstigen, NOT A FLATSCREEN, RAC/Rivers Cuomo/Goldroom, Eats Everything/Dajae, IC3PEAK, Kendrick Lamar/SZA, Ozuna/Cardi B, River, MIST, Tom Budin/Luciana, Dim3nsion, Migos and B Young, as well as re-entries from Steel Banglez et al, Dominica (back in a new remix version from Pearse Dunne & Calvin Buckley - the Dominica 2016 edit charted originally), A$AP Ferg, Dave/MoStack, J Hus and Not3s. Nice to see Rudimental, Jess Glynne, Macklemore & Dan Caplen at #1, "These Days" is almost getting at #1 for me, next week might get it. Awesome song and they all have great chemistry together!
And for your debuts, I really like "Check", "All The Stars" and "Stir Fry"!

Lonely Together almost out of the Top 5 for the first time naturally (not due to xmas)

Nice high debut for Kiesza vs. Chris Malinchak, haven't heard it yet but I really like Kiesza so I will check it out soon! Kojo Fund & Raye's Check is good too

I'm liking the climb for PNAU too!! I hope it can get a bit higher Chameleon was better though tbh, but Go Bang is still a banger

Loving Mother, really different from anything else I've heard recently and really enjoying the world music-esque influences, it will be Top 10 when I publish my chart when I get home on Monday (spoiler alert )

La Louze just scraping the Top 40 as well I had no idea it would do that well when I sent it to BJSC - it was more of a last minute 'what-on-Earth-can-I-send' moment

longer than one week hopefully!! think it will anyway as Calvin's new'n isn't strong enough
might drop out the top five next week for real ;o looks likely to spend the entire year in the chart at this rate though.
it's quite different for Kiesza, but stands out well for me.
can't see Pnau making it much higher if it even continues to climb, Chameleon was a lot stronger.

Ghost Voices is excellent, glad BJSC introduced me to that as I had no idea Porter was back even if under an alias.

Mother is very inspired, not at all what I expected from a Kiesza/Malinchak collab.

I'm always amazed at Lonely Together's run every time I check here I mean, I know you love Avicii and it's certainly worthy of such a run but still!

Shame For You is dropping so fast, although I'm kinda surprised it went as high as the top 10!

It just refuses to get old, still a tune every time. Though it is down to #10 this week so its days are nearly up..
Kinda just went there on Rita hype tbh, shouldn't have made it that high really. Though it is quite a good song and it's still top 50 this week.
