This year we celebrate the 15th anniversary of Beyoncé's smash, Grammy award winning hit with Jay Z. A #1 hit in the UK and US amongst many other countries, and Top 10 basically everywhere else!
It doesn't feel like it's been 15 years tbh |

This song made me gay.
Seriously though, seeing the music video on an almost daily basis back when it was released (we had just got cable TV in 2002/3), I was mesmerized by her. She serves so many fierce looks and it's not hard to see why she went on to have the biggest career post-Destiny's Child. The only other music videos from this era that I remember having the same impact on me are "Whenever, Wherever", "Everytime", "No Good Advice" and "Beautiful". I know every single word (including most of Jay-Z's rap) and it feels so weird that it is 15 years old! Despite that, it's a timeless song that I'm sure I will continue to love for the next 15 years and then some. I can't wait to see them sing this together for the first time in June! |

She'd already long-outgrown the group by this point, but it was this, combined with the "Uh-oh, uh-oh, you know's" and a super slick verse from her future husband Jay-Z that acted as quick-dry cement to her superstar status. Its hit credentials may seem obvious now, but in the beginning, Beyonce wasn't so sure. Helmed by R&B/hip-hop producer Rich Harrison (Amerie, Jennifer Lopez, Usher), Bey deemed the song's sample too retro sounding and "full of blaring fanfare", which wasn't a popular sound on radio at the time. Once fully recorded, it was the obvious choice of lead single for her debut solo album Dangerously In Love. Crazy In Love debuted at Number 1 with sales of 72,201 and spent three weeks at the top, eventually dethroned by the slightly less memorable Never Gonna Leave Your Side by Daniel Bedingfield. To date it's sold just over 1.1 million across all formats, split between 267,000 CD singles, 342,000 downloads and 50.2 million streams. It was to be the first of five chart-topping singles for Beyonce - she'd have to wait three years to pick up another with Deja Vu, another Jay-Z collaboration in 2006. Wow at it now having sold over half a million via streaming!
 It won't be too much longer until streaming contributes over 50% of its total.Crazy in Love was also released on DVD single & 12" vinyl in the UK, I wonder if that's included within the 267,000 "CD singles"? I think there was an "only 3 formats can count" rule back then, so perhaps the 12" sales weren't included (and I assume not many would have been pressed / sold). |
