Magical Mystery Tour EP chart run: 20-3-{2}-2-2-4-5-12-18-25-34-39->12 Voters: popchartfreak 40 WhoOdyssey 35 Notorious D.O.T. 32 steve201 24 Roba. 24 dandy* 17 gooddelta 12 …ready for it 8 King Rollo 7 Chez Wombat 5 Brer 5 ben08 3 Jade 2 This was released in 1967 as the lead on a 6 track EP in the UK, and an LP in the US. 2 of the other 5 tracks from the EP were included on the blue album. It’s primarily Paul written and includes ringmaster calls, a trumpet fanfare and traffic noises. For me this isn’t a track that particularly stands up on its own, though it works brilliantly as an album introduction. Some clearly love it though, and the same can be said of another track still to come. |

Nowhere Man Voters: popchartfreak 32 King Rollo 31 ben08 30 Bjork 28 Severin 25 jimwatts 25 JulianT 24 …ready for it 11 dandy* 8 Chez Wombat 3 steve201 3 Notorious D.O.T. 3 A 1965 track included on “Rubber Soul”, which was a #3 hit single in the US. It’s one of the earliest Beatles songs to be entirely not about love, and is an early example of John’s philosophical writing. The song is also featured to describe a character in the “Yellow Submarine” film. I loved this as a child and as a daydreamer I felt like I had a real connection with it. I still absolutely love it lyrically, though musically there’s nothing very out of the box about it. |

The less said about the Magical Mystery Tour movie the better but I love the collection of songs that accompanies it - agreed the titular track works best in a full EP/album listen

Magical Mystery Tour is my favourite of their more ‘novelty’ songs, I’ve always found it to be really fun and uplifting, plus it’s got a real sense of propulsion to it that I agree works really well as an album opener.

'Magical Mystery Tour' is great. Good to see that made the top 50!

Please Please Me Chart run: 45-33-16-3-3-{2}-2-3-2-5-7-11-17-22-30-31-41-42->18 Voters: …ready for it 40 Ben08 37 WhoOdyssey 36 Severin 30 steve201 25 Roba. 16 danG 14 jimwatts 12 Bjork 6 gooddelta 5 King Rollo 3 Their second hit in early 1963 after “Love Me Do” peaked at #17 first time round. At the time there was no “official chart”, and most of the charts at the time showed “Please Please Me” as a #1. However on the Record Retailer chart eventually chosen as the official chart it was a multi week #2 blocked by Frank Ifield and then Cliff Richard. It was a US #3 on re-release. The track started out as a Roy Orbison style slower ballad, but evolved into an upbeat, straightforward pop song with an endearing harmonica introduction. |

Love Me Do Original chart run: 49-46-41-32-37-29-23-21-26-19-22-{17}-24-17-28-37-36-44->18 1982 re-release chart run: 14-5-{4}-7-15-29-64->7 Voters: WhoOdyssey 48 gooddelta 33 …ready for it 30 Bjork 22 Ben08 22 Severin 21 Roba. 21 steve201 14 danG 9 Brer 7 Jade 6 Their debut single in October 1962 which only reached #17 but had a very long chart run. It later reached #4 as a 20th anniversary re-release. In the US it was only released as a single in 1964 once Beatlemania had well and truly taken hold, and became their 4th #1. And so by the first 2 hits neatly land back to back. Like “Please Please Me” this features harmonica, unusual in a pop song at the time, and was a joint composition by John and Paul. |

I've never really liked either of those early hits, glad to see they're not too high but I'd have definitely rather seen other songs make the top 50 in their place.

I think that's one of my favourites from the very early hits, the harmonica intro is timeless.

oops 2 big losses for me in MMT and Nowhere Man, Taxman not so fussed about - but George was moaning about too much tax (95% of income of the rich at the time was tax, so the fabs weren't anywhere near as rich as people imagined they were - partly why they opted to start Apple as a record company/label, I suspect). That backfired on them badly....!
Magical Mystery Tour was blocked from the top spot by....Hello Goodbye! I still say the top-selling actual track for a couple of weeks is therefore I Am The Walrus - as it was simultaneously at 1 and 2 as B side and EP track. Had it been "streaming" era rules, it would have been a Beatles top 3 |

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band Voters: WhoOdyssey 38 gooddelta 32 Bjork 31 ben08 31 Jade 23 Severin 20 Notorious D.O.T. 15 steve201 12 jimwatts 11 Brer 11 Roba. 8 Chez Wombat 4 dandy* 1 This is the title track on what remains their biggest selling album. It appears twice on the album, as the opening track segueing into “With A Little Help From My Friends”, and as the penultimate track segueing into “A Day In The Life”. Paul conceived the idea of the album being a role play in which they each assume an alter ego in the lonely hearts club band. The orchestra used on the track is the same as that used for “A Day In The Life”. Again I didn’t vote for this myself as I don’t really see it a track that works independently. That said it’s a fun and unique piece of escapism, and a track that has been covered by Jimi Hendrix and Robbie Williams among others. |

Sgt Pepper isnt a proper song to me, it's a snippet. In the same way that the Abbey Road medley is a trio of snippets. Would have preferred a proper 3 minute song to start off the album, with a minor repeat fade at the end to bookend, if they had to do it....(and they didn't)

Real Love Chart run: {4}-9-22-44-53-73-67->7 Voters: gooddelta 47 WhoOdyssey 40 steve201 32 danG 23 Roba. 20 Brer 20 King Rollo 18 popchartfreak 13 Notorious D.O.T. 9 jimwatts 6 Bjork 5 ben08 5 JulianT 2 This was their last hit until a few months ago, and it’s the last non red and blue album track to appear. John recorded demos of this in 1979 and 1980. In 1994 Yoko gave Paul demos of 4 tracks: “Grow Old With Me”, “Free As A Bird”, “Real Love” and “Now And Then”. This and “Free As A Bird” were completed in 1995 and “Now And Then” in 2023: nothing seems to have come of the first track on that list. A Tom Odell cover of this was featured in the 2014 John Lewis Christmas advert. It’s a sweet wrap yourself in a warm blanket kind of song so I can see why it was chosen for that. |

'Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band' is a commanding album opener. It's randomly a staple of my local pub's playlist so I'm pretty used to it in isolation

I agree. Sgt Pepper's the track features an intro two verses a bridge and a refrain. And at 2 minutes long, it outlasts From Me to You and it's similar length to many of their early songs.

I prefer Tom Odell's cover of 'Real Love' I think but both are good versions!

Agreed both versions are good in their own way.
