Sunday Chart Predictions
Predicting the 22/03 to 28/03 chart

Sam Smith to hold on to the double so frootin' tight?
With a quiet release schedule, Sam Smith should remain at #1 for a second week - the first time he'll have stayed on top for more than one week - with the Comic Relief, John Legend-featuring 'Lay Me Down'. The Top 10 should remain similar whilst hoping for a Top 20 debut is Tough Love's 'So Freakin' Tight'. Elsewhere, there should be entries for Pitbull and Ne-Yo's 'Time of Our Lives', MNEK's 'The Rhythm' and possibly Iggy Azalea's 'Trouble' and Kygo's 'Firestone'.

After climbing to #1 last minute last week, Sam Smith should do the double yet again. New entries to the Top 10 should include Van Morrison's Duets: Re-working the Catalogue, Mark Knopfler's Tracker, Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly and Marina and the Diamonds' FROOT. Elsewhere, entries should come from Bananarama, Modest Mouse, Tobias Jesso Jr, AWOLNATION, Sleeping With Sirens and The Veronicas. Furthermore, the physical release of Bjork's Vulnicura is sure to see it return to the Top 40.

Kendrick has released his album on all platforms now. It's now 'released' on Amazon. You just don't receive it for a week tongue.gif he doesn't have any CDs in the shops but that's it. I think he's looking for a #1 in the albums this week.

Albums
Kendrick - #1
Mark Knopfler #2
Marina #4

Great to see Kendrick at #1! Very deserved. Not surprised at Marina's position, and I think she'll be frontloaded too. I'm hoping the physical release of Vulnicura can push Bjork into the top ten after it originally peaked at #11 but I'm not sure if she will be.

*prays there's sales missing from Marina's total*

I knew she'd be front-loaded and fall to 6/7 during the week but I thought she'd manage 2 or 3 in today's midweeks so it's a bit disappointing.

This will not happen. Why would they have a small lead?? They are WAY ahead on iTunes.

Posted by: Joe. 17th March 2015, 12:35 PM

I've noticed that female solo artists that still get decent to very good support from Radio 1 haven't been debuting brilliantly over the past few months. Kelly Clarkson - 6, Charli Xcx - 15, Cheryl - 7, Jessie Ware - 9, Jessie J - 6, Rae Morris - 9 etc. The only ones who have gotten albums in the top 3 are huge international stars like Taylor Swift, Meghan Trainor and Madonna. (Ella Henderson being the only I can think of from the UK).

So I guess Marina is performing similarly to the way female acts often do, just without any support.

Well done to Kendrick! For a second I didn't even think he dropped his new album unexpectedly on iTunes. I thought it was GKMC making a belated rise to #1. laugh.gif In a way I wish that was the case and his second album could début at #1 shortly after. laugh.gif

Posted by: GTH 17th March 2015, 01:19 PM

Was hoping Marina would be top 3 in this update but top 5 is a good start considering she has had no radio support or actually pushed one proper single for this album with a full promo campaign. I will be happy if she can hold onto top 10 by Sunday as I know she will be very front loaded.

Seriously need to just focus on one track, do a radio tour and get them playing it. Electra Heart got to number 1 off the back of Primadonna. This album has plenty of tracks stronger than that IMO. Savages or Blue as the next/first proper single! cheer.gif

6k for Marina is so depressingly low. So sick of my faves flopping!

Posted by: JosephStyles 17th March 2015, 03:11 PM

Were people really expecting more from Marina? Electra Heart may have gone to #1 but it only did so on sales of about 21k. And that was with a hit single. This has no support and no hit single, so 6k is actually about what I was expecting for this stage.

Hozier still very strong! Looking like it could have been #1 for a couple of weeks, a bit like my chart laugh.gif
Hope Tough Love makes the top 15, I doubt it's going to have streaming assistance but as long as it's top 10 sales and top 15 combined I'm happy smile.gif
Style still struggling to reach the top 20 sad.gif
Also really happy that MNEK managed to get so high at this stage. It's going to be top 40 most likely biggrin.gif

Posted by: Joe. 17th March 2015, 03:19 PM

Electra Heart managed to pull sales of around 70k - 80k last I heard like 18 months ago, so it wasn't THAT bad.

If Radio 1 don't support this at all it will be a gigantic flop though.

Froot is about where Kelly was at this point. (about 200 sales more), and that was with a massive airplay hit. I wouldn't call 6.1k in one day a flop. It will be rather front-loaded of course.

Because usually, people cherry-pick the songs from NOW albums when they're first released, which is why those versions climb as high as top 30 on iTunes, sometimes top 20. After it's been out for quite a while, the cherry-picking of the songs start to die down

Kendrick at #1 is the most pleasantly shocking surprise I've seen in chart terms for a long time. I had no idea the UK would take so well to a new era from him, especially so instantly with a release strategy like this.

First week sales in the US should be huge too biggrin.gif

Can I get some light on why is Hozier at #3?

He is behind Rihanna in BOTH iTunes and Spotify with a decent margin... And has never been ahead of her at any point this week or the previous....

But e. g. he is No. 5 + 36 + 107 + 113 on amzon, where Rihanna is only No 10.

Might be the same on other dowlnload sites and streaming services and that clearly would be enough to be in front overall.

Posted by: AntoineTTe 17th March 2015, 05:05 PM

Is it other single sales collapsing or has Hozier had some high profile exposure somewhere?

Posted by: sammy01 17th March 2015, 05:17 PM

Four Five Seconds has done amazingly well. I feel like Rihanna probably has the smallest fanbase of all the big artist but she somehow gets the GP on side time and again.

Posted by: Brett-Butler 17th March 2015, 05:19 PM

Nearly 12,000 sales is extremely good going so far for Mark Knopfler. How many copies did his last few albums sell in the whole week? It can't have been any more than that.

Astonished at Kendrick being #1 in the mids, I thought he'd still not be near popular enough here to pull that off even with the hype around this album ohmy.gif He obviously won't hold on as he's only a few thousand ahead of Sam but it looks like he has a decent shot at being top 3 if not top 2.

I wouldn't write Kendrick off as his CD hit stores today. Just bought mine. cheer.gif

He's also doing amazing on streaming virtually the whole album is in the top 100 on Spotify already.

A contestant on "The Voice" sang Take Me To Church at the weekend. I'm guessing that's the biggest factor for Hozier being no.3 in the Tuesday update.

Re the EP that would be odd, the track list is totally different.

Though as it is just a digital release maybe it is outside the midweek chart at the moment.

Kendrick performing better than i anticipated but i feel it wont stay number 1. I can see Sam Smith back at number 1 by the end of the week. I am happy with Hozier climbing, the song is adorable, that said, i would like to see his album achieve a new peak.

Posted by: AntoineTTe 18th March 2015, 11:17 AM

I think Take Me to Church has had ample time in the Top 10. Time to make way for new music.

Posted by: pippa 18th March 2015, 12:07 PM

Take Me To The Church was a slow grower and took a while to reach the top 10, the longer it stays top 10 and helps it on the road to becoming a million seller the happier i will be as it is so different to everything else in the top 10.

endrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly breaks Spotify streaming records
Tracks from the much-anticipated follow up to Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City, notched up 9.6m streams on the album’s first full day of release

Kendrick Lamar’s new album, To Pimp a Butterfly, has broken streaming records on Spotify. Tracks from the follow up to Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City notched up 9.6m streams on the album’s first full day of release, more than any other LP has recorded in the streaming service’s seven-year existence. This beats the previous record holder, Michael Bublé’s Christmas, which garnered 9.5m streams on Christmas Eve in 2014.

The news comes after a surprise release for the album, which was expected to arrive a week later and may have been launched by Interscope without Lamar’s full knowledge. Anthony Tiffith, CEO of Top Dawg Entertainment, which represents Lamar, tweeted: “I WOULD LIKE 2 PERSONALLY THANK @Interscope FOR f***ING UP OUR RELEASE … SOMEBODY GOTS 2 PAY 4 THIS MISTAKE !!!!”

The record has received rave early reviews. The Guardian said: “The full 80-minute epic itself is an ambitious and at times overwhelming reflection of its multifaceted complexity.”

On 17 March, Kanye West Tweeted to say: “KENDRICK IS AN INSPIRATION. THANK YOU FOR THE VIBRATIONS AND THE SPIRIT. YOUR MEANING, MESSAGE AND EXECUTION ARE GIFTS TO THE WORLD.”

Posted by: steve201 18th March 2015, 07:55 PM

One - when "You Got It All" by (recently dropped) Union J charted at #2 but would have been #1 on sales. They fell to #34 the following week, and would have fallen 1-22 if the chart had no streaming incorporated.

Posted by: gooddelta 19th March 2015, 03:10 PM

It's not streaming that dramatically reduced the No.1 turnover recently, it's a combination of a couple of massive songs coming out when literally nothing else is around.

If they'd had their single up for streaming Union J arguably might have held on to their career for a little longer, as if they'd made the #1 it would have dropped from the chart nowhere near as fast due to the 'Number 1 effect'.

Marina at #7 isn't too bad, I'm thinking #9 on Sunday, but as long as it holds onto the top 10 I'll be happy. Hopefully some sales appear later!

We have top 5 sales, James Bay is just 88 copies away from the top 5

Kendrick still going strong, ever so slightly increasing his lead on Sam. Could be a close one this weekend.

Do you have no sales outside the top 5?

Pitbull & Ne-Yo should climb a bit higher with the streaming effect. Glad Kygo is in the top 40. Hope he stays in there on Sunday. Where abouts has Iggy Azalea climbed to?

Sam sold more than Kendrick yesterday but only by a few hundred. There's still a 3.6k gap so it might be close but I'm expecting Sam will still win as his sales shoot up at the weekend.

Mark Knopfler's album seems to have registered negative sales for yesterday for some reason? Must have been a problem with the Thursday update (which we never got anyway).

On the first page you've got the singles Top 5 listed instead of the albums for today's update.

Sam Smith is hardly selling as much as last week, the #1 single is going to struggle, only sold 7.3k yesterday, my guess 70k for the week or just under. Years & Years could have had 3 weeks at #1. Jess Glynne should have no trouble bagging herself a #1 next week.

I assume Madonna has overtaken Marina now? It will take forever for Madonna to even hit 100k at this rate sad.gif

Yes.

For Marina fans (Joe), based on how much she sold between today's update and what would have been yesterday's, Marina is on course for 10.3k. Noel is sure to overtake and George Ezra may do too, but that would still put her on track for #9.

Go on James, get that top 5!

Thanks. I'm pretty gutted it's almost all over for this song (unless it gets a random WIDFL style boost). I hope Calvin can recover from this with the next single from 'Motion' (if there's one).

Oh Marina :'(
I really thought this album would debut much higher and That it would sell more than 'Electra Heart's first week.. #deluded

Ooh nice to see Marlon climbing biggrin.gif It would be nice if it can keep the longevity up. Still confused as to why R1 snubbed it though unsure.gif

Hope Kendrick can save us from another depressing chart double

Oops looks like we're heading for the lowest weekly sales for a No1 this year then. sad.gif

Fantastic to see Kygo in the top forty! heart.gif yahoo.gif

I must be one of few people who really doesn't like Sam Smith at the moment lol.... I completely agree that he is very talented but I just find I can't turn on the radio or tv music channels without him being on!! I find him far too overplayed....... (Plus he stopped Madonna getting another number 1 album sad.gif )

Hoping Hold Back The River can get to #3 this week!
