Welcome all to the final of BJSC 85, coming to you live from Castenellia City in the heart of Unovia! Congralutions to our 40 qualifiers from the semi stage, as well as our auto-qualifier FARC, who of course won last month's contest with Salt Ashes' Save It. One of these 41 songs below will become the 85th winner of our grand contest - but who will it be? That's all up to you...

To help decide the winner, simply http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?act=Msg&CODE=4&MID=10139 (Liam) using the usual scoring system for a big final - 18/15/13/12/11/10/9/8/7/6/5/4/3/2/1. Of course, you can vote for any of the 41 below but NOT yourself! You have until 11:59pm Tuesday 28th June, with results to follow the evening of Wednesday 29th June. Any participant who does not vote by the end of the deadline will receive both a 33% deduction from their points total and a ban from the next contest, so don't let that be you!

When you have voted, you will see your country turn RED, or your country will be listed below the entry list if you were a DNQ.

Ahh glad to see I am up a bit earlier in the running order than I was in the semi! Might get a reaction from more than like 3 people in the plug session this time kink.gif

Speaking of which ~ I won't step on any toes if Tim and/or Lotti (or anyone else) were already planning to do a final plug session but if not I think I shall host one on Friday night. (After the EU referendum has settled lol).

Voted! Despite losing my 12 from the semi, I'm quite pleased with my top 15 here, and could have voted for 3 or 4 more besides.

As I said in the semis, it's a much more diverse lineup than last month, which is always enjoyable to listen to.

Lonely Cities melody sounds a lot like the one in Galantis' Louder Harder Better dance.gif

A lot of great songs going through this month, which means unfortunately a lot of commiserations :'( I don't get the hype for $ORO or LSD at all though laugh.gif

I had the same kind of in semi 1 except I did give it points, and it wasn't quite last but I certainly didn't like it, it's weird because I was like "wtf is this it's awful" and now it's really hit me!

I'm still quietly confident I could scrape like 9th/10th with this, despite Plug reaction, because I think those who do like it seem to really like it which is helpful and I wouldn't have thought it's as divisive as songs like FKA Pi's, when it comes to it being completely polarizing, love it or hate it.

Just to clear something up that I told the mods about earlier ~

I'm determined to vote in this but as I've informed the BJSC mods I may be unable to due to real life / family issues. I managed to listen to half earlier in between hospital visits but as I'm not sure what lies around the corner for the next few days I'm not sure if I'll get the time. As I've said I am determined to vote because I need to support my faves (of which there are many - what a strong final!) but thought I'd clear up now before people start panicking or questioning why and Bré starts his manhunt to find the non-voters heehee.gif this is just a precaution that I've given in plenty of time, hopefully I will vote as normal!

One of the worst things about hosting is having to do it all in a rush at the end.

I wonder if the rule that results must be delivered within 20 hours of the deadline could be relaxed a bit, or extended to 48 hours, considering so many people seem to like to vote at the absolute last second. It's not like all hosts can just give up their entire next day to devote to BJSC prep, and that's near enough how long it takes when so many votes come in at the last minute every month!

It's been the case for as long as I remember unfortunately. Some people are happy to have 1 listen and send votes off straight away earlier in the week, some people prefer to listen multiple times over the voting period in case there are growers so therefore leave it until the final day. I don't think it's a matter of not being able to dedicate the time, in fact the late voters arguably dedicate more time that earlier voters in several instances due to repeat listenings so their votes are as representative as possible. It just unfortunately has the follow-on effect of making life harder for the host but it's the way it has always been. It's a lose-lose situation in some ways.

EDIT: That rule is there but I think it has been waived on occasions where the host hasn't been able to manage that, it just encourages next day results as that is what lots of people want - whereas if it was specified 48 hours then 90% of hosts would use that extra day frustrating a lot of members.

I'm voting right now, sorry about leaving it relatively last minute, partly why I left this so late was because my votes were VERY hard to decide this time (like Ryan says, I can't vote on just one half arsed listen unless I'm super busy, I need to make sure I include all the songs I want to) and I have been a bit busy over the last week and today I've had a free day to finalise them.

Anyway, this is surely the strongest final this year, Semi 1 was definitely more my thing and made up for the losses from Semi 2. Wonderful stuff. I'm really into all of the seeming contenders going by the odds threads this time too, which is a bonus.

Multiple benefits to this would be that it would encourage voters to not leave it till the last day as if they did they wouldn't get their moment of fame in the results thread (except for the spreadsheet at the end), there would be less prep work (probably 40 individual votes instead of 60+), a guaranteed exciting ending instead of knowing the winner multiple votes from the end and also a shorter results show that may only go on for 3 hours rather than 5. Sounds perfect! *.* (I know no-one would agree to this but I can dream heehee.gif)

Oh I agree that last minute voting is incredibly frustrating, I have always arranged the results of a contest to be on a day I am not at work or Uni so that I can count laugh.gif

I don't really think late voters put in more effort to listening, I think it is more to do with either working full time and not having a moment to vote, or just being lazy and putting it off and then realising you have to vote an hour before the deadline.

The repeated listens thing might be true but I mean people who vote early in the week run the risk of "oh I should have given that 15 instead of 11", I've had that myself. It hardly matters and it's hardly the end of the world.

I know I might be coming across as throwing my toys out of the pram or being a lazy host but it's just a thing I've noticed, plus I'm a worrier and keep thinking what if there are still like 15 votes missing, what if I do things wrong in the midst of it all (I do like triple check though laugh.gif). I know that people work, have whatever they're doing and that's fine, but equally I think some people just leave it out of laziness or they can't be arsed and don't realise how much work it takes to prep them all. I'm not expecting everyone to explain themselves either it's just me airing my frustration more than anything. This is probably partly me assuming hosting would be easier than it is laugh.gif

I think there's also an element of 'deadline mentality', as the same thing happens in other BJ competitions, not necessarily because everyone is taking a lot of time thinking about their answers, but just because the deadline is there so it might as well be exploited (think how many rates always arrive on the last day...though that's possibly also because people try and create hype for their own).

Also, presumably when it comes to BJSC finals a large proportion of voters do actually hear all the songs for the first time during the semi stage, so don't need the whole 7 days to come up with the most accurate set of votes, and even if they haven't it's only another 20 'new' songs to get through.

As a participant it has no effect on me, or anyone else, of course but for hosts it's a pain, because it would be an awful lot easier to tot them up bit by bit during the week, and gradually prepare the results thread, rather than giving up a day of your time after the deadline has passed.

Also that is definitely a good idea! Maybe if a final still has 15-20 votes or so, lump them all into the same thing like the televoting stats at Eurovision, like "from 18 countries Unovia received _____", I'd definitely discuss that with the mods and see at making that a part of the format.

Yes, that would be great! It does tend to be a lot of the more non-pop voters that leave voting until the last minute too quite often I've noticed, which could mean a big swing upwards for all of the alt entries at the last minute!

Haha it was completely a random thought that I haven't thought about in detail, but I guess say if Hendinia got 80 points from the last day voters there could be a breakdown underneath saying who gave those 80 points on the last day. But all the details would be on the spreadsheet as normal and count just the same.

Hosts have often presented multiple late votes in one post as a smaller version of what Ryan's suggesting, speeding up the results towards the end, one block at the end might work but it could also be quite overwhelming.

(also I am a perfectionist with my votes but I can't ignore hosts pleading for help and that's the main reason why I often vote on the second-last day)

The 20hr thing is in the rules to heavily encourage next day results. If we have to push it out by 24hrs then so be it, that's fine and as long as the mods are informed we're fairly chill.


I like the idea of presenting the last day results in a block, that is certainly something to look into in more depth. In BJSC there is a habit of bandwagoning onto half formed concepts and ideas and ending up with monstrosities like the ban list (which i'm sure very few of you were around for, but trust me it was an unmitigated disaster not unlike brexit) so I'm going to hit the brakes and ask for caution here. It's something that we will have to trial on a smaller scale first, once we have had time to flesh out the concept.

The idea is good and we will trial it in the next spin off, but a main contest is too big a stage for an idea that is still so rough and undefined just 24hrs out from the results.

I respect that the idea has some enthusiasm and that's so wonderful to see and I'd like to harness that, but I think there is too much to discuss to get it done for this contest without it being half arsed or terrible. If we're doing it we're going to do it well.

Yeah I didn't want to do it this contest without prior warning, because some who've voted today have presented "proper" votes, for want of a better word, but also to make sure the mods can discuss for a spin-off trial, or the next contest, as gives plenty of time.

And I'm still fine to do results tomorrow, it may be 9 rather than 8 but no later than that, and I'm not going to linger on it too long, so they won't go on too late, I think last month's results were a perfect pace so I'm gonna try for about that!

The banlist (the nominations process one at least) was my idea, and looking back I can't imagine why I thought it was a good idea for people to nominate songs and artists to be banned.

I think it was two things - firstly it was a reaction to Tirren's idea of a mod-elected banlist (people seemed to dislike the fact that only the mods would have a say on what would be banned - that didn't bother me particularly but I was trying to come up with an alternative suggestion) and IIRC there was another proposal at the same time that songs that were participating could be disqualified halfway through a contest if they suddenly took off on iTunes or appeared on the Radio 1 playlist...! laugh.gif (Which would have meant a swift exit for the likes of Sigala/Roll Deep etc and made a real mess of the results).

Then again, the banlist was quite a popular suggestion at the time, and people mostly seemed happy to trial it. But BJSC was a very different kettle of fish back then. I expect there really would have been riots if the veto process that we have now had been implemented midway through 2009. It's certainly a fairer, more logical and much more scientific system of course, but it would have wiped out about half of all of the songs in the contest in 2009, whereas the banlist only made about about 4 or 5 songs a month ineligible to send, most of which wouldn't have been confirmed by anyone anyway. (Not that I'm sticking up for the banlist, it really was an awful idea but at the time it made a lot more sense than it does now due to different eras and it looked tame compared to some of the alternative rule change proposals around at the time).

I think it would have to be a 'last six hours' final blob of votes rather than a last day thing though, seeing as quite often more than half are still outstanding with 24 hours to go, so you couldn't really present 35 votes in one blob, after taking ages to present the first 25. Or maybe just have a fixed number each time like the last 15 votes go into the final blob, regardless of timing (though there will pretty much always be way more than 15 outstanding on the final day).

The other possible issue of course is that not all hosts choose to present the results in order of receipt, so this would pretty much eradicate the freedom for hosts to present the votes in the order they wish to, in order to maximise tension early on in the reveal or whatever (though I guess they could still order the first lot as they wish to).

The problem, from my pov, was that what we ended up doing after my victory and the contest's break was actually what we wanted to do and tried to do when we ended up with the banlist!! laugh.gif

That's why we're not doing it just yet. All of this is still to be determined.

The mods will have a chat and then I have proposed that after that we come into the main forum and all of us have a look at a more detailed version of a proposal.

Was the one you hosted the Unknown one?

I think I recall that contest you scrapped the banlist (and the artist reservation thread *shudders*) and introduced some measures about blocking the release schedule and obvious BJ-loved artists, like Katy Perry/Gaga etc, with an appeal process in place, which I guess is where the current rules evolve from.

But yes, it worked much better that time because you just implemented it and went with it, rather than canvassing for views first, which is what Tirren initially did and it really didn't work, because nobody could agree on anything laugh.gif

Still, I think we're in a very good place now, and have learnt from past mistakes. I can't believe we ever had a time looking back where everyone could basically hog five artists that they might have sent (and iirc a lot of people started to abuse that system by also reserving artists that they didn't want to send...but didn't want anybody else to send!)

I need someone to compile a big history of BJSC (much like the more general history of BJ threads we had in the lounge last year), as some of this stuff just needs to be relived!

If we do do this combining the last block of votes into a single thing a la Eurovision (which sounds like it could be quite interesting so I'm not against it!) could we still have the actual PMs for those votes posted? (As in just all in a single post after everything is revealed). It'd be a bit difficult to check that there aren't errors in the final spreadsheet if the spreadsheet itself is the only thing to go off (I know this is usually not a big issue as any errors are negligible 99% of the time but it could be significant if there are ever any ties in or around the top 2).

I think that would be doable yes. It wouldn't need to be an immediate thing, but for hosts to post all of the PMs in a single post within the next couple of days with no extra formatting should be easy enough to achieve once the (immense!) pressure of results show day is over.

The most eye-opening thing from doing this so far is that Desbuanda were in the first half of the votes for that contest! ;o

Just going to put this here.

We're working on what this is likely to look like and will get back to you and demo it in due course, after all a demo is pretty pointless and meaningless if you have no idea what the format will look like or how it would be revealed.

Reign in the enthusiasm, I already have Ryan for that, and just chill. We like the idea so it won't be long before we can do something that actually has a grounding in reality.

If it's just an optional method for doing results, then maybe a host could still post every country's votes individually the way it's currently done if they're willing to, basically decide for themselves just like how they can decide what order to reveal the votes. I was interpreting the idea as an option for each host rather than a permanent change, at least I think it's something that could be left to the host's discretion. Either way it sounds great (forgive me Silas, I didn't have a chance to read/post until now happy.gif).
