Think back to 1997/first half of 1998. What were your expectations of each of the girls' solo careers? Were your expectations anywhere close to what they ended up doing?

Geri/Victoria - Honestly, I never expected solo albums out of them. It's not that I didn't like their voices. In fact, both of them often have my favorite parts of Spice songs. But with the way they were used in the group...I just didn't see either of them carrying an entire album. So. Both their solo ventures exceeded my expectations by miles. Out of Your Mind was probably the biggest surprise for me as I didn't expect Victoria to do anything that bold. As for Geri...I do have a bizarre memory. As a kid, the only song I pictured her singing was Fame (the one from the film/TV series of the same name). That was a truly odd thought as...the song is wrong for Geri, actually...and as it turned out, Geri would use the Fame film as a basis for the It's Raining Men video. Also. The first line of that song is "baby, *Look At Me*". Anyway. Hardly a premonition. But still weird.

Mel C - In the early days, the uniqueness of Mel's voice kinda reminded me of Alanis Morissette...so I guessed Mel's solo output could be a little similar to Alanis' Jagged Little Pill album. So, when we first heard Gaga from Mel...I kinda figured that was, indeed, what we were getting. Now, I couldn't have guessed just how varied Mel's debut album (and career in general) would turn out to be. I do think moments of Mel's career have a slight kinship to Alanis. Goin Down doesn't sound like You Outta Know...but both are revenge songs that shed a previously more pop-y image. I'd also say Mel's Why has a similar vibe to Alanis' Uninvited.

Mel B - I was kinda expecting something close to the lighter/most commercial songs by TLC. Mel could sing low and raspy like T Boz...and Mel could also rap and sing ballads. She just seemed like...one woman TLC to me? She carried some traits of all that group's members. I wasn't completely off. Hot has some of the same collaborators TLC used. I Want You Back sounds edgier than what I was expecting...but I'd also say that I loved Mel's first four singles, and they all surpassed my expectations (even if the album itself didn't)

Emma - I was expecting very young sounding pop. A World Without You and the A Girl Like Me album track are very in line with what I was expecting. I figured her stuff would be good, but there's a maturity to the best of her work that I didn't expect. I didn't predict the more adult contemporary stuff like What Took You So Long...or that she'd create something as artful as the Free Me album.

I think I would’ve always expected Geri to go full force into a solo career. She was so driven and creative. But the level of success surpassed my wildest expectations.

I never expected Victoria to attempt to be urban. That blind-sided me. But I did like Out of Your Mind at the time.

I thought Emma would’ve been the most successful soloist, given her versatile voice and mass appeal. But they took her down the mum-pop route. I’d have expected S Club 7 style material from her, keeping it light and youthful.

I’d say the two Melanies delivered somewhere near to my expectations, musically-speaking.

I dont think them going solo even crossed my mind at that time.

Even when Geri left I didnt automatically expect her to go solo in music.

Yeah I had no expectations for their solo work, as I was only ever interested in them as part of a group. Eventually, Emma did win me over when she released Free Me, but apart from that... meh...

No expectations, only dissapointments lol

Mel B could've really forged out a solo career completely different the group. I wish she had stuck with Missy & Timbaland - I would've love to hear the direction they would've taken her.

I agree with this. Of them all she was the biggest let down for me, she had so much potential and Hot was not what she should have done. Don't get me wrong it has a handful of good songs but really thought she could have done something very experimental and different.

To answer the question, I have to admit solo careers never crossed my mind that early on! I was only 9/10 at the time, I had only taken interest in pop music for a couple of years, so I was very "here and now" in my approach to music - not anticipating what could be. It wasn't really until 1999 that I thought about their possible solo directions, and only because Geri's solo career opened me up to the concept of it.

I think at the time I would have anticipated Mel B's solo career to be more "British" in its music direction. I think she could have been more suited to that than having such an Americanised album. Maybe something with the vibe of Craig David, Mis-Teeq and So Solid Crew could have been an interesting direction for her to take - although that's more of a 2000/2001 perspective. I do agree that further work with Timbaland and Missy Elliott would have been a great fit - their music was often offkilter, I think that would have suited her down to the ground. Jam & Lewis/Darkchild/Teddy Riley... for the most part it was too straight forward, too bland, scrubbed away her identity.

I also agree that Emma's first album as a whole was a bit surprising for being so Adult Contemporary leaning. There are cheekier moments on there such as A Girl Like Me and Spell It O.U.T. I suppose, but I would have thought more bubblegum pop would have been the more obvious direction. At 25, she presented more mature than her age, I think. I think she got the balance right with the Free Me era - which was still mature, but overall there was a more youthful vibe than the A Girl Like Me era.

I think Victoria's music direction in 2001 made sense for her, for the trends at the time, it's in line with what I expected from her. But sometimes I wonder how things would have gone if she'd gone in a fully pop direction.

I would say Melanie C's album having such a variety of genres on it was a bit of a surprise at the time, when perhaps a full on rockier album would have been more expected (which is where she eventually went with her third album).

In hindsight I think a Rachel Stevens direction would have suited Victoria a lot more than the attempted RnB pop, which never suited her at all. I could see her really pulling off Sweet dreams and So good, they both have similar sounding voices too.

I did not want them to go solo, and to this day think their solo stuff is terrible (but some good singles here and there). They are better and stronger as a group.

Mel C Norther Star was such a complete surprise of direction initially as i think it was so unexpected but it did what it needed to do to make stand out and also be very different to sporty spice. Mel B definitely had far more potential, she was always someone that could grab headlines which helps promote but she just went in the wrong direction musically, looking back it looks like she never really had a long term plan with her style of solo music. Emma, Mel C and Geri were fairly consistent with their direction or they evolved but mostly kept to what they started out with solo wise.

I totally agree with this. Sweet Dreams my LA Ex would have been a great fit for Victoria and she kind of made moves towards the dance-pop market which made total sense.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE some of her album, specially tracks like Like That, Not That Kind of Girl and I Wish (hell, I even came to appreciate Not Such an Innocent Girl eventually). But I never quite understood as to why she would go in an R&B direction when that didn't really suit her or her style AT ALL...
