01 – Kasabian – Club Foot (2004)

UK Chart Peak: 19
Entered at Peak: Yes - 1/1

First up is Kasabian with their debut single Club Foot, one of the most recognisable riffs of the time and a song which has gone on to be one of their most loved, only Fire has more Spotify plays in the streaming era. A solid start with 23 people recognising it.

Correct Answers [23/28] – AaronTM, Ansel, Awardinary, BillyH, Bjork, Bre, Chrissmith276, CianS, Cremey, DalekTurret32, Dandy*, Danvember, Dobbo, Jade, Jimwatts, jlj, Mack, M4NGO, Paulgilb, PeteFromLeeds, SevenSeize, StoneDragon, TS0301

Blank [4] – King Rollo, N4yr, Rush, Vibe
Incorrect [1] – Riser (Hard-Fi)

Incorrect ‘Odd One Out’ guesses: Dobbo, Paulgilb
Incorrect ‘Most Correct Answers’ guess: Mack

Posted by: King Rollo 30th November 2020, 07:46 PM

I certainly recognised the riff but didn't know who it was by.

02 – Sub Focus – Tidal Wave (feat. Alpines) (2012)

UK Chart Peak: 12
Entered at Peak: Yes - 2/2

Next is Sub Focus with what was their biggest hit at the time Tidal Wave, with the help of Alpines, a band who I loved at the time but unfortunately were never able to capitalise on a bit of mainstream success. Again, I think a solid score for a song considering its chart success and age.

Correct Answers [16/28] – Awardinary, Chrissmith276, DalekTurret32, Dandy*, Danvember, Dobbo, Jade, Jimwatts, jlj, M4NGO, N4yr, Paulgilb, Rush, SevenSeize, StoneDragon, TS0301

Incorrect ‘Fewest Correct Answers’ guess: Ansel

I had to look up what Kasabian song it was but knew it was them, thanks to my parents for insisting on having Radio X on.

03 – The 1975 – Give Yourself a Try (2018)

UK Chart Peak: 22
Entered at Peak: Yes - 3/3

Song #3 is a recent one from The 1975 with Give Yourself a Try, the lead single from their 3rd album. They’re a band who’ve had far more chart hits than I imagined they would’ve done, both when they first appeared and now looking back. It gets an impressive score with 75% identifying it and one more getting the band right. The first of only three songs not to receive any answers to the bonus question.

Correct Answers [21/28] – AaronTM, Ansel, Awardinary, BillyH, Bjork, Bre, Chrissmith276, CianS, Cremey, DalekTurret32, Dandy*, Danvember, Dobbo, Jade, Jimwatts, jlj, KingRollo, Mack, M4NGO, N4yr, Paulgilb, PeteFromLeeds, Riser, Rush, SevenSeize, StoneDragon, TS0301, Vibe

1/2 points [1] N4yr (The 1975)
Blank [4] – Bre, King Rollo, Mack, Vibe
Incorrect [2] – BillyH (Foxes), Dobbo (Klaxons)

Yay, good start so far! I wrongly put 'Underdog' as the Kasabian song at first but thankfully realised my mistake when checking over them!

Posted by: jimwatts 30th November 2020, 07:54 PM

One of their better songs for me, although the riff is a bit too similar to Joy Division's 'Disorder'.

Good going so far smile.gif

Posted by: Riser 30th November 2020, 07:55 PM

Ah, I recognized the first two and couldn't place them no matter how many times I listened to the clips. I did consider Kasabian for #1 and not sure why I went for Hard-Fi instead, ah well.

04 – London Grammar – Baby It’s You (2020)

UK Chart Peak: 80
Entered at Peak: Yes - 4/4
Next is the most recent song included, chosen as it’s my favourite song to trouble the UK top 100 this year, the fantastic London Grammar with Baby It’s You. Despite not really troubling the charts it’s recognised by a lot with some incorrect answers varying in their likelihood. It’s also the first correct answer to one of the bonus questions, with 10 people identifying it as one of the two ‘odd ones out’! ohmy.gif

Correct Answers [18/28] – AaronTM, Ansel, Awardinary, Bjork, Bre, Chrissmith276, CianS, Cremey, DalekTurret32, Dandy*, Danvember, Jimwatts, jlj, M4NGO, N4yr, PeteFromLeeds, StoneDragon, TS0301

Blank [6] – King Rollo, Mack, Paulgilb, Rush, SevenSeize, Vibe
Incorrect [4] – BillyH (Johnny La and the Laas), Dobbo (The xx), Jade (Florence + The Machine), Riser (Doves)

Baby It’s You has been one of my surprise loves of the year, just don’t admit to lewistgreen! (He won’t think to check here) tongue.gif

Posted by: Jade 30th November 2020, 08:00 PM

That one bugged me so badly!! 'Baby It's You' was in my chart and everything laugh.gif but didn't think it was something recent at all oops.

Posted by: Bré 30th November 2020, 08:00 PM

Took me a while to figure out which Kasabian song #1 was, their entire discography before 'Fire' kind of blurs into one in my memory but I was certain it was them so I listened through the intros of a bunch of their singles to figure out which one it was laugh.gif

#3 is the first of the three that I knew I recognised but couldn't put my finger on, I actually had a feeling it was something by The 1975 so I don't know why I didn't just guess that or look up any of their songs to find it but ah well ~ Probably should have got 'Tidal Wave' too but that one wasn't quite as close to the tip of my tongue.

London Grammar being one of the odd ones out in the theme is making me feel like my guess at the theme may have been almost right but not quite... that was one of the quickest ones for me to recognise, one of my favourite songs of the year <3

05 – Girls Aloud - Untouchable (2009)

UK Chart Peak: 11
Entered at Peak: No – 4/5

Song 5 is Untouchable from Girls Aloud, their penultimate charting single in 2009 and for me, has always been one of their best. Maybe a sign of how BuzzJack has moved on over the years that this only gets 18/28 correct answers, and one incorrect guess at the most correct answers bonus, not quite the worst answer to that question kink.gif

Correct Answers [18/28] – AaronTM, Awardinary, Chrissmith276, CianS, Cremey, Dandy*, Danvember, Dobbo, Jade, Jimwatts, jlj, Mack, M4NGO, N4yr, Rush, SevenSeize, StoneDragon, TS0301

Blank [6] – Ansel, Bjork, Bre, King Rollo, Paulgilb, Vibe

Today marks 18 years since Girls Aloud formed! Fitting that they appear here - with a fantastic song too wub.gif I was so peeved that it missed the top 10 sob.gif

I don't think I've ever heard that Girls Aloud song, shows how little I cared about pop music pre-2014 wink.gif

06 – Bruce Springsteen – Dancing in the Dark (1984)

UK Chart Peak: 04
Entered at Peak: No – 4/6

A short but instantly recognisable clip of a classic from Bruce Springsteen next, the second oldest song included, despite its age most getting it correct again with a couple of incorrect guesses of the same song.

Correct Answers [23/28] – Ansel, Awardinary, BillyH, Bjork, Bre, Chrissmith276, CianS, Cremey, DalekTurret32, Dandy*, Danvember, Dobbo, Jimwatts, jlj, KingRollo, Mack, M4NGO, Paulgilb, Riser, Rush, SevenSeize, StoneDragon, TS0301

I knew it wasn't 'We Didn’t Start The Fire' but I couldn't shake that off melodically so I thought it was better than nothing laugh.gif

I think that Bruce Springsteen song has entirely passed me by oops ph34r.gif let me finally give it a first listen!

Posted by: jimwatts 30th November 2020, 08:10 PM

Such a classic, as is that whole album

Posted by: Bré 30th November 2020, 08:12 PM

I very briefly thought of Gorillaz' 'Aries' before getting 'Dancing In The Dark' (the riff has a pretty similar melody) which kind of shows how recently biased my mind is laugh.gif classic song though heart.gif

'Untouchable' is a great song as well, one of GA's best, but pretty sure that's a clip I didn't recognise at all. I am bad at this.

07 – The Magician – Sunlight (feat. Years & Years) (2014)

UK Chart Peak: 07
Entered at Peak: Yes – 5/7

This next is one of my favourite songs from the last period that I really kept up to date with the charts and the music that was in them, The Magician and Years & Years with Sunlight, a fairly chilled out dance song that I still think sounds great today. Recognised by a good amount of people too with 20 correct answers.

Correct Answers [20/28] – AaronTM, Ansel, Awardinary, Bre, Chrissmith276, DalekTurret32, Danvember, Dobbo, Jade, Jimwatts, jlj, M4NGO, N4yr, Paulgilb, PeteFromLeeds, Riser, Rush, SevenSeize, StoneDragon, TS0301

Blank [6] – Bjork, CianS, Cremey, Dandy*, King Rollo, Vibe

Incorrect ‘Odd One Out’ guesses: AaronTM, Chrissmith276

Posted by: Jade 30th November 2020, 08:17 PM

TUNE wub.gif That song made me question if the theme was "songs sent to BJSC" but it soon became obvious that it wasn't the case laugh.gif

08 – Christine & The Queens – Tilted (2016)

UK Chart Peak: 20
Entered at Peak: No – 5/8

Next is the second most correctly guessed song Tilted by Christine & The Queens. I had no idea it had been anything like this big a hit and despite its relatively low peak clearly made its way into everyone’s conscience with 26 of 28 correctly guessing, King Rollo highly unlucky with the bonus Q.

Correct Answers [26/28] – AaronTM, Ansel, Awardinary, Bjork, Bre, Chrissmith276, CianS, Cremey, DalekTurret32, Dandy*, Danvember, Dobbo, Jade, Jimwatts, jlj, KingRollo, Mack, M4NGO, N4yr, Paulgilb, PeteFromLeeds, Riser, Rush, SevenSeize, StoneDragon, TS0301

Incorrect ‘Most Correct Answers’ guesses: King Rollo

Damn - Got the answer right on #7 but couldn't see that it had charted for some reason. That now confirms that I knew what the theme was but was thrown off by not finding the chart position for it so I put another theme!

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 30th November 2020, 08:23 PM

09 – Martin Garrix & Dua Lipa – Scared To Be Lonely (2017)

UK Chart Peak: 14
Entered at Peak: No – 5/9

Next up was the first song where the clip I included was not its intro, part of Martin Garrix and BuzzJack favourite Dua Lipa’s Scared To Be Lonely, it didn’t put people off though as again a lot of correct answers.

Correct Answers [20/28] – AaronTM, Awardinary, Bjork, Chrissmith276, CianS, Cremey, DalekTurret32, Dandy*, Danvember, Dobbo, Jimwatts, jlj, M4NGO, N4yr, PeteFromLeeds, Riser, Rush, SevenSeize, StoneDragon, TS0301

Blank [6] – Ansel, Bre, King Rollo, Mack, Paulgilb, Vibe
Incorrect [2] – BillyH (The Chainsmokers), Jade (Marshmello - Silence (feat. Khalid))

Posted by: Jade 30th November 2020, 08:23 PM

Oh yeah it was the back-to-back of both 'Sunlight' and 'Tilted' that made me think of BJSC as this was sent in its original form to the contest ('Christine'!) - one of the most unexpected top 40 hits of the past 5 years, the accompanying album was my favourite of that year too <3

Edit: ARGH no way was that something other than 'Silence'!! Oops blush.gif

I was wondering where you'd managed to go wrong with it!

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds 30th November 2020, 08:23 PM

'Tilted' was such a standout song in the chart of its day, feels like one of the few songs that Buzzjack almost unanimously supported. I also remember the week it got its sole chart play (thanks to the summer dance playlist they only played the Top 20 for a few weeks), a real moment.

Posted by: Bré 30th November 2020, 08:24 PM

The English language version of 'Christine' (aka 'Tilted') has always occupied a weird space in my affections. If it had been my introduction to the song I'm sure I'd adore it but I can't get over how awkward and clunky some of the English lyrics sound compared to the original (which is still the version that I remember and get stuck in my head whenever I think about the song). 'Temper la poo' >>> 'actually good' any way of the week x

'Scared To Be Lonely' is a bit crap so I don't mind missing that one. The next one is the one I am most dreading seeing the results from because I feel like it's one of the most obvious ones but I just couldn't quite get it. Cue me being the only person who missed it.

Posted by: SevenSeize 30th November 2020, 08:24 PM

Sunlight *.* what a moment

I definitely recognised that instrumental from #4 but couldn't figure it out for the life of me laugh.gif

10 – Deep Dish – Flashdance (2004)

UK Chart Peak: 03
Entered at Peak: Yes - 6/10

Song 10 is a song which got two sets of multiple incorrect answers, and listening back can see where they come from, but it is not Bodyrockers or Paul Oakenfold with similar songs from around the same time, it is in fact Deep Dish with their 2004 #3 hit Flashdance.

Correct Answers [18/28] – Ansel, Awardinary, BillyH, Bjork, Bre, Chrissmith276, CianS, Cremey, DalekTurret32, Dandy*, Danvember, Dobbo, Jade, Jimwatts, jlj, KingRollo, Mack, M4NGO, N4yr, Paulgilb, PeteFromLeeds, Riser, Rush, SevenSeize, StoneDragon, TS0301, Vibe

Incorrect [8] – CianS, Mack (Paul Oakenfold – Faster Kill Pussycat (feat. Brittany Murphy)), AaronTM, M4NGO, PeteFromLeeds, Riser, Vibe (Bodyrockers – I Like The Way), N4yr (Rogue Traders – Voodoo Child)

Posted by: chrissmith276 30th November 2020, 08:31 PM

Flashdance was such a tune!! I can definitely see why some people thought Bodyrockers though.

Posted by: Jade 30th November 2020, 08:31 PM

Posted by: PeteFromLeeds 30th November 2020, 08:32 PM

I KNEW I knew that one! I didn't think it sounded right enough to be Bodyrockers but don't think I'd have been able to pull that out of my head.

Posted by: Bré 30th November 2020, 08:33 PM

Ah, that's not as annoying as I thought it was going to be. I do know that song obviously but it's not exactly an all time favourite or a huge unmistakeable classic or anything. I was this close to thinking I was going to be the only person to not get it and was almost tempted to guess it as being the most guessed answer... laugh.gif

I did briefly think it might have been BodyRockers as well but quickly figured out it wasn't that when the vocals that came to my mind weren't those of a predator x

I have been erroneously included in the list of correct answers btw.

11 – Redlight – Get Out of My Head (2012)

UK Chart Peak: 18
Entered at Peak: Yes - 7/11

Up next was a clip which I’d guess to be the BBCs cricket theme, one of a few I used that I personally wouldn’t get. It the first of two 2012 hits for Redlight, Get Out My Head. The lowest score yet, but not quite the lowest with three lower to come. I did enjoy BillyH’s wrong answer, quite plausible! It was the third most popular choice for ‘Fewest Correct Answers’ bonus, one of which I’m not sure whether Cremey meant as he put a #11 between Deep Dish and Redlight which messed up the co-ordination of most answers.

Correct Answers [16/28] –Awardinary, Bre, Chrissmith276, CianS, Cremey, DalekTurret32, Dandy*, Danvember, Dobbo, Jade, Jimwatts, M4NGO, Riser, SevenSeize, StoneDragon, TS0301

12 – José González – Heartbeats (2006)

UK Chart Peak: 09
Entered at Peak: Yes - 8/12

One of a few songs where there are two versions which I find incredible, Jose Gonzalez’ take on The Knife’s Heartbeats, made famous and popular by its inclusion in the Sony TV advert with the bouncy balls. Another song that’s well remembered with a great score (much to AaronTM’s surprise), but as if I’d include James Blunt!

Correct Answers [24/28] – AaronTM, Ansel, Awardinary, BillyH, Bjork, Bre, Chrissmith276, CianS, Cremey, DalekTurret32, Dandy*, Danvember, Dobbo, Jade, Jimwatts, jlj, Mack, M4NGO, Paulgilb, Riser, Rush, SevenSeize, StoneDragon, TS0301

13 – Echosmith – Cool Kids (2015)

UK Chart Peak: 17
Entered at Peak: No - 8/13

A fairly recent one hit wonder now, Echosmith with Cool Kids, a song which hung around the lower reaches of the chart for a while, 21/28 seems a good score for a hit of its size.

Correct Answers [21/28] – AaronTM, Ansel, Awardinary, BillyH, Bjork, Bre, Chrissmith276, CianS, Cremey, DalekTurret32, Dandy*, Danvember, Dobbo, Jade, Jimwatts, jlj, KingRollo, Mack, M4NGO, N4yr, Paulgilb, PeteFromLeeds, Riser, Rush, SevenSeize, StoneDragon, TS0301, Vibe

#13 was a riff I knew I'd heard somwhere before but I'd never have associated it with Cool Kids (even though I remember that quite well as well), I was thinking maybe an XFM/Radio X-friendly indie band.

Posted by: Jade 30th November 2020, 08:44 PM

Echosmith was my pick for least guessed so I was way off then rotf.gif

Posted by: Bré 30th November 2020, 08:46 PM

I knew the José González version of 'Heartbeats' long before the original (didn't even know it was a cover for some time), I do like the original too but definitely prefer José's take on it, such a calming and wonderful track heart.gif

'Cool Kids' on the opposite end of the spectrum is a song that I've always found pretty morally objectionable and just doesn't sit right with me at all. So again, not particularly displeased to have not recognised it.

15 – The Pretenders – 2000 Miles (1983)

UK Chart Peak: 15
Entered at Peak: No - 8/15

As we were nearing Christmas I thought it best to include a festive song, and went with one of my favourites, 2000 Miles by The Pretenders, a song which unfortunately doesn’t get close to reaching its 1983 peak in the streaming era. Still a great score though, with 25 recognising it. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the three that didn’t all have profile flags putting them outside of the UK where I don’t think it’s as well known, so unlucky wrong answers for Jimwatts and M4ngo.

16 – Glasvegas – Geraldine (2008)

UK Chart Peak: 16
Entered at Peak: Yes – 9/16

Now for the song which is comfortably the least identified, the first of two hit singles Glasvegas had in 2008, Geraldine, their tale of a Scottish social worker. It was the most predicted song to be the least identified, with equal amounts of correct answers to that as the song. It was an easy 'win' for it with all other songs getting at least 50%. Poor M4NGO confusing Glasvegas songs went with a later non-charting single. A section of similar-ish bands that were around at the same time also guessed.

17 – DJ Snake & Lil Jon – Turn Down For What (2014)

UK Chart Peak: 23
Entered at Peak: No - 9/17

Song 17 is Turn Down For What from DJ Snake and Lil Jon, a song which was a long running minor hit from a few years ago which spent almost half a year inside the top 75, DJ Snake went on to have three much bigger hits over the next few years. It’s clearly incredibly recognisable still as the majority correctly identify it again.

I love all of the singles off their debut album, stunningly beautiful songs.

'Turn Down For What' is another one I considered for the most guessed answer, surprised as many as 6 people missed it!

Don't think I have ever heard that Glasvegas song.

18 – K-Ci & Jojo – All My Life (1998)

UK Chart Peak: 08
Entered at Peak: Yes - 10/18

Up next is All My Life by K-Ci & JoJo, a song I remember loving when I was a kid discovering on a Now! album along with the likes of The Tamperer and Eagle Eyed Cherry. It’s unsurprisingly one of the lowest correctly guessed but still an impressive 50%. Some worthy incorrect guesses from other R&B acts.

19 – Taylor Swift – Style (2015)

UK Chart Peak: 21

#19 is a song that was understandably predicted to be the most guessed by three, but fell somewhat short with it annoying some people who failed to recognise it was Style by Taylor Swift, a sizeable hit but far from her biggest. PeteFromLeeds pretty much correct in saying ‘I want to say it’s a pop song from the last 5 years that did relatively well’

UK Chart Peak: 13

Next up is the massive number one hit included, that was easily the most predicted song to get the most correct guesses, Mirrors by Justin Timberlake, a song I think is suburb from one of my all time favourite pop albums. Another song which was one of the smaller hits for a BuzzJack favourite, Rihanna with Talk That Talk, one of a few where she’s had a helping hand from Jay-Z. Chris Malinchak is still making great music to this day (really like both 'The Letter' and 'Ain't Gonna Hurt Me' from a new EP he put out a couple of weeks ago), it's a shame he didn't have a longer chart career but the 2 songs of his that did make the top 40 are both fantastic (I actually liked 'If U Got It' even more than 'So Good To Me' though I'm not sure how many people would remember that one these days).

'So Good To Me' is also one of a handful of songs that I nearly sent to BJSC at one point before becoming a hit.

Next we have another oldie that was only correctly identified by 50%, Lullaby by The Cure, their only song to reach the UK top 5. It has an incredibly rememberable intro, but you have to know it in the first place and despite its success they have a few that are probably better remembered, but definitely up there with their best for me. Incorrectly predicted by a few to be the least correctly guessed which was close, and one for the opposite from Bjork.

Another smaller hit but one which is incredibly recognisable, Sigur Rós with what was already their first top 40 song Hoppípolla, before it was used to promote the BBC’s nature series Planet Earth causing it to reach a host of new fans as it began a slow climb back up the chart to reach the top 40 for three more weeks and a new peak. 27 – Arcade Fire – Everything Now (2017)

UK Chart Peak: 50
Entered at Peak: No - 13/27

Arcade Fire are one of my favourite bands of all time, and it’s great to see them being so popular on BuzzJack these days, with this song ‘Everything Now’ recently voted as one of the sites top 40 of the last decade and the band still to come in Gezza’s latest countdown. Quite remarkable for a band such as them to have 4 weeks in the top 75 in 2017. Well recognised with an unsurprising reference to Abba as a wrong guess as it was well likened to them. Like with London Grammar, plenty correctly identifying it as an odd one out.

And that was the last one that I definitely knew but couldn't quite get, dammit. I was thinking it was a much older song, but I still don't really have a good excuse for not getting that. (In fact I feel like it might have even been previously included in another NMTBJ where I did get it? although maybe I'm imagining that)

Will I get half marks for thinking along the right lines for the theme? kink.gif

Bonus Questions
1) 25 of the 27 songs are linked/connected in some way - what is that connection? (3 pts)
2) Which are the two songs that are not part of that connection? (2)

1 2013 Justin Timberlake - Mirrors
2 2013 Chris Malinchak - So Good To Me
3 2004 Deep Dish - Flashdance
4 1984 Bruce Springsteen - Dancing In The Dark
5 1989 The Cure - Lullaby
6 2014 Little Mix - Salute
7 2014 The Magician - Sunlight (feat. Years & Years)
8 1998 K-Ci and Jojo - All My Life
9 2006 Jose Gonzalez - Heartbeats
10 2007 Calvin Harris - Acceptable In The 80s
11 2009 Girls Aloud - Untouchable
12 2012 Sub Focus - Tidal Wave (feat. Alpines)
13 1994 The Prodigy - Voodoo People
14 2017 Martin Garrix & Dua Lipa - Scared To Be Lonely
15 1983 The Pretenders - 2000 Miles
16 2008 Glasvegas - Geraldine
17 2015 Echosmith - Cool Kids
18 2012 Redlight - Get Out of My Head
19 2004 Kasabian - Club Foot
20 2016 Christine & The Queens - Tilted
21 2015 Taylor Swift - Style
22 2018 The 1975 - Give Yourself a Try
23 2014 Dj Snake & Lil Jon - Turn Down For What
24 2006 Sigur Ros - Hoppipolla
25 2011 Rihanna - Talk That Talk (feat. Jay-Z)
50 2017 Arcade Fire - Everything Now
80 2020 London Grammar - Baby It's You

Organising the 27 songs by their chart peak, the link becomes apparent, a song that peaked in each in the UK in each of the positions 1-25, with Arcade Fire and London Grammar being the odd ones out. As this was being held in the Chart Forum rather than the Lounge, I wanted there to be some form of connection to the charts, went through the 40 or so songs I’d come up with as potentials to use and figured I could probably use a song that peaked in each position. 4 people correctly identified this, well done to jimwatts, jlj, Rush and StoneDragon!

What I hadn’t considered is that there could be answers which were less specific but also correct, it would seem incredibly harsh to not give points to anyone who gives a genuine connection with the correct two songs missing from it. Ansel, Awardinary, Bjork, DalekTurret32, SevenSeize and TS0301 are all correct in saying all songs reached the top 40 apart from Everything Now and Baby It’s You.

Chrissmith276 managed to identify a perfect 27 songs and had realised there may be a 1-25 link but couldn’t identify a number 7. This made me panic but both Polyhex and the BuzzJack http://Chart Thread at the time confirmed that ‘Sunlight’ was indeed a number 7 hit!

There were some good and interesting efforts amongst the wrong answers:
Aaron TM - The song titles link to the body, its parts of its actions – can make this for a lot tbf
BillyH - they all have at least two of the same letters or numbers next to each other somewhere in the artist/song name – this worked with what he had
Bre – all charted in the top 100
Chrissmith276 – all charted in the top 50
Cremey - Something to do with them sampling//interpolating songs or being covers
Jade – Released in the 21st Century
King Rollo - Don't have a song number in the title – this is technically correct but I think far too tenuous to give points to! laugh.gif
Mack – all entered the UK top 40 – unfortunately didn’t identify the two correct ones which didn’t so doesn't get this
M4NGO – all released after 1990 – the 1.5 points that M4NGO didn’t get (thinking it was the wrong non-charting Glasvegas song and not knowing Lullaby) really scuppered this bonus! drama.gif
Paulgilb - Names of Newspapers/Magazines
PeteFromLeeds - All lead singles from albums
Riser - Snubbed from a Now CD Tracklists
Vibe – 3rd Singles

N/A – CianS, Dandy*, Danvember, Dobbo, N4yr

Glad I wasn't the only one to put Erasure laugh.gif oops!

'Salute' is definitely one of Little Mix's greatest singles heart.gif I'm glad it breathed some life back into that era.

Posted by: RabbitFurCoat 30th November 2020, 09:43 PM

I also have to give a special thanks to Danvember for producing the top 2010 songs of the 2010s thread – it helped make up for gaps in my recent music knowledge (I can safely say I’ve never heard 2 of these songs) and enable a bit more modern selection, and without an easy substantial list of tracks which peaked at 12, 14, 17, 18 & 23 would have taken a frustratingly long time to have fulfilled the idea and I’d happily give a bonus point on account of making my life easier! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Jade 30th November 2020, 09:43 PM

Both '3rd singles' (Style, Salute etc.) and 'Now! That's What I Call Music' related guesses came into my head as well but too many of them didn't fit!

Delighted with joint 2nd! There was a similar theme in the singles cover quiz in the last series, but even so I didn't twig it might be that until I'd got about 24 of the answers. Then I managed to work out the #7 and #18 peaking hits after a quick check of lists on Buzzjack for songs from the mid-2010s, unforunately without such a list for #25s I was stumped on that one!

Thanks for hosting.

Disappointed with 7th having got all the songs and one minor slip up pushing me from what would have been Joint 1st!

I'm pleased not to finish bottom.

Thanks for the quiz, RFC, and well done StoneDragon for winning.

Damn I'm so annoyed I only dropped 1.5 points in the main part of the quiz but finished 13th! The bonus questions really let me down cry.gif

Really enjoyed taking part though, thanks for hosting and congrats to StoneDragon!

Congrats StoneDragon on your near-perfect score!

Disappointed in finishing 20th if I'm honest! I'm kicking myself for missing the theme, it didn't even occur to me that there was only one #1 on the list, which could've been enough to work it out. It was a good round, I just drew blanks more often than I should have. Thanks RFC for hosting!

Ohhhh I knew I knew 'Baby It's You' but couldn't remember it even though it's only a few months old :') Glad I correctly guessed it as an odd one out though!

Ah interesting at Redlight, I thought it was probably a '90s house song but had no clue on the first part of the sample before the piano (it kind of sounded like 'Warp 1.9' but not that). I've heard those 2 Redlight songs a couple times but never committed them to memory (whereas I love their much less relevant 2014 'hit').

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the three that didn’t all have profile flags putting them outside of the UK where I don’t think ['2000 Miles'] is as well known
I like when this happens laugh.gif indeed I've never heard it.

I thought all the songs I got seemed too well-known to be the least guessed so I picked song 24 from the ones I didn't have as the sample sounded pretty indistinct - wish I'd gone for song 16 instead laugh.gif

I think I'd have gotten most Prodigy hits but I barely know 'Voodoo People'. Oddly I thought it could be The Chemical Brothers and had a quick look through their singles, but didn't try The Prodigy.

I picked 'Mirrors' for the most guessed because of the sample being right at the start of the song, which seemed like a super recognisable section. I'd actually forgotten about the album version intro of 'Salute', but luckily the beat came in within the sample.

I had no idea on the theme at first and almost didn't bother, but I looked them all up on Polyhex (a) in case I found a pattern and (b) to count the number of first-week peakers, and once I had the 20 songs I recognised put together I could see they were all in the top 25 (except Arcade Fire) and with no double-ups biggrin.gif Based on the number 27 I had wondered if it could be something to do with the alphabet (A-Z + numbers) but couldn't spot anything. Once I got the theme I thought of looking up the 'number 5 singles' and such threads but without the songs being in order, figured it would take way too long to bother laugh.gif

Fun quiz, thanks happy.gif (and love the 1975 song choice + 'Tidal Wave' and 'Flashdance')
