19th January 2020

It's Avicii on top for a second week as the charts start to wake up and get moving, with The Weeknd getting his 4th number 2 and highest new entry is a former 1978 chart-topper from Plastic Bertrand, the Belgian New Wave act who hit across Europe with his deliciously fab and fun Ca Plane Pour Moi while I was a student at Uni. For some reason it's in the itunes charts and seeling again (Number 100 on sales last week) so that's good enough reason for me to re-chart it, in at 4! Ca plane pour moi, as it were!

Seeb get a second top 10 inside 6 months, after getting the top track during 2019 for me on chart "sales", this time assisting Julie Bergan who gets a first. Highest contemporary track is Muse's The Void, the 4th track to chart off their last album to go top 20, shooting in at 13 by virtue of me watching Dr Brian Cox's brilliant The Planets series again and loving the theme snippet from the song they use. Evocative! That's 13 top 20's in 20 years. Meanwhile The Fizz recycle an old SAW hook to great effect and leap into the 20 as they keep the new material clicking at a good pace 39 years on.

Green Day enter at 18, shockingly their first new entry for 11 years, and some 22 years since Time Of Your Life hit 4 on their chart debut (and a future chart-topper for Glen Campbell). What got them back on chart-course? Err sampling a hook from an old Joan Jett track, that was a cover of a huge UK Glamrock hit from 1973. Oh Yeah! is the bracketed bit in the title Do You Wanna Touch Me, which would be uncoverable these days given who wrote the words, but at least the lads have donated proceeds to charity having realised who Mr Paul Gadd is on the songwriting credits. I'm happy to give main credit to Mike Leander who most likely wrote the tune, produced the song, worked with The Beatles, and Executive-produced Jesus Christ Superstar, the album.

Harry Styles makes it 4 tracks in the top 30, SO greedy, Billy Ocean shoots into the top 40 with his first new top 40 track since errr the 80's, I think! Noah Cyrus returns with at least her 4th chart entry in 3 years, including 2 top 10's, and July. Ozzy Osbourne hasn't troubled my rundown since 2003's Changes with daughter Kelly, but now extends his chart career to 37 years as solo act, and 50 years as lead-singer of Black Sabbath, aided by Elton John making it 49 years of hits, and Slash getting a credit from me for the fab guitar solo 33 years since Guns 'n' Roses debuted.

Chart returns from Selena Gomez, Jonas Brothers, Tame Impala, Eminem (now on 21 years of chart success), Ed Sheeran, and a former chart-topper from Gorillaz popping back in, round off the busy week.

Hi John!

Nice big climb for Kiss Somebody there! I've been loving that one this week, SeeB have really returned to form now!

Heard Lost in Yesterday the other week, quite different from what else I've heard from them but if it gets them a hit then good on them.

Giving Oh Yeah a listen now, it's sounding quite nice, better than their last stuff anyway!

Great chart biggrin.gif
