BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Buzzjack's favourite non-top 10 hit (2018)

Posted by: danuary 13th January 2019, 10:44 AM

Voting has now closed so let's get on with the results. What has been crowned the best single to miss the top 10 this year? Well it certainly isn't one of these.

#57. 6ix9ine (feat. Nicki Minaj & Murda Beatz) - FEFE

UK chart run: 35-17-21-21-21-23-26-28-28-34-x [10 weeks]
Points: -01 | Positive votes: 02 | Negative votes: 10
Top points from: Rush [18 points]
Negative votes from: WhoOdyssey, Cody SlayKali, N-S, JosephAvery, coi, ...ready for it, sergejdordij98, PeteFromLeeds, MrAndrewMan, alby [-2 points each]

Unsurprisingly it is 6ix9ine who finishes the absolute lowest here, with a total of -1 points, combining 19 positive points and 20 negative points. He also finished the highest in the yearly Hatechart with this song, his sole entry eligible for this (as his other top 20 hit peaked at #9).

#54. XXXTENTACION & Lil Pump (feat. Maluma & Swae Lee) - Arms Around You

UK chart run: 14-19-20-20-23-40-47-49-x [8 weeks]
Points: ±00 | Positive votes: 00 | Negative votes: 00

We have a three-way tie for second-last as the next three all received absolutely no votes. XXXTENTACION had two songs eligible this year, though despite his lack of popularity on Buzzjack his other entry has racked up enough points to miss the bottom ten. This one however, as his first posthumous release which ended up not even going on the album (and is apparently for Lil Pump's next project as he is the co-lead), basically no-one liked.

#54. Machine Gun Kelly - Rap Devil

UK chart run: 31-15-30-52-x [4 weeks]
Points: ±00 | Positive votes: 00 | Negative votes: 00

In the battle between MGK and Eminem it is Em who wins infinitely, as 'Rap Devil' also racked up no points here. It was released as a response to Eminem's not so subtle diss in album track 'Not Alike', and quickly gained in popularity though just as quickly dived back down the chart, where he may never enter again seeing as the track has pretty much killed his career.

#54. Kanye West - All Mine

UK chart run: 11-28-48-67-x [4 weeks]
Points: ±00 | Positive votes: 00 | Negative votes: 00

Kanye West released the EP album 'ye' which instantly got him 3 more top 20 hits. Though this one ended up having the best chart run it was held out of the top 10 by his own 'Yikes', and despite such iconic lyrics as 'I love your titties 'cause they prove I can focus on two things at once' and 'Ay, none of us would be here without cum' it also received no votes. Kanye does however have another track higher up.

#52. EO - German

UK chart run: 55-30-24-18-18-15-13-13-14-15-15-15-23-27-28-57-69-74-x [18 weeks]
Points: +01 | Positive votes: 01 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: coi [1 point]

Then-16 year old rapper EO quickly got his breakthrough hit with 'German', in which he sings the word 'German' 62 times. Only one person here was mildly impressed by his 'I have a BMW!1' brag rap anyhow and it finishes on 1 point.

#52. B Young - Jumanji

UK chart run: 64-64-51-43-27-25-25-19-15-14-15-14-14-13-14-14-41-37-47-53-61-x [21 weeks]
Points: +01 | Positive votes: 01 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: alby [1 point]

Likewise another breakthrough UK rap hit, B Young managed to get one of the biggest hits of the year and also gave it a successful re-release a few months later under the name '079ME'. It finishes equal to 'German' with a sole point.

Posted by: danuary 13th January 2019, 11:02 AM

#51. DigDaT (feat. Krept & Konan & K-Trap) - AirForce

UK chart run: 20-47-55-70-x [4 weeks]
Points: +04 | Positive votes: 01 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: Dircadirca [4 points]

Another UK rap hit here, though this only managed one week in the top 40 entirely fuelled by its Krept & Konan & K-Trap remix (it could only reach the bottom quarter of the top 100 beforehand). Again, only one person gave it any points.

#50. Eminem - Venom

UK chart run: 16-23-28-38-55-71-x [6 weeks]
Points: +08 | Positive votes: 02 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: DalekTurret32, ...ready for it [4 points each]

Eminem's MGK diss is yet to come but for now he drops out with 'Venom' which is taken from the film of the same name, and got a big boost into the top 20 when its music video arrived.

#49. Post Malone - Paranoid

UK chart run: 11-22-27-37-49-58-x [6 weeks]
Points: +13 | Positive votes: 02 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: coi [9 points]

Post Malone's album got a ton of streams as you would expect, and this being track one on the album alongside Spotify playlists helped this become his 3rd chart eligible track until 'Ball For Me' eventually took over to chart at #70.

#48. Ruti - Dreams

UK chart run: 14-x [1 week]
Points: +13 | Positive votes: 03 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: WhoOdyssey, Riser [5 points each]

Surprisingly The Voice UK is still relevant enough to produce a top 20 hit for its winner, with the song (a cover of The Cranberries' 'Dreams') outpeaking the original version and managing to be the most downloaded single of the week. Lack of streaming of course let it down and to date it is the lowest charting single for a sales chart #1.

#47. AJ Tracey (feat. Not3s) - Butterflies

UK chart run: 24-19-19-21-22-23-21-19-22-22-50-54-61-62-67-70-x [16 weeks]
Points: +13 | Positive votes: 03 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: Defaze [8 points]

Buzzjack don't seem to enjoy the UK rap hits so much as another big rap hit drops out. It was the first top 40 hit for AJ Tracey and also one of three entries in this chart for Not3s, whose Mabel collaborations fare better in this countdown.

#46. Meek Mill - Going Bad (feat. Drake)

UK chart run: 17-20-26-64-22-... [5+ weeks]
Points: +14 | Positive votes: 02 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: Dircadirca [9 points]

It's been a big year for Drake of course, who has 4 entries in this countdown thanks to his numerous guest appearances. Meek and Drake famously had high profile beef not too long ago but Drake moved on to beefing with Kanye West and Pusha T so they got back together for this, which gave Meek his first UK top 40 hit.

Posted by: coi 13th January 2019, 11:05 AM

Safe to say there have been no major losses so far. Butterflies, Paranoid and German were alright but the rest weren't great. Glad FEFE finished bottom too.

Posted by: Dircadirca 13th January 2019, 12:27 PM

Really frustrated me how Kanye released a really introspective and eclectic album but Spotify above all else pushed the lazy booty jam and now it easily has the most streams on the album. Heaven forbid people have their base line perceptions about his music be challenged.

Posted by: Rush 13th January 2019, 12:49 PM

I almost single-handedly cancelled out all of the 'FEFE' negatives laugh.gif I certainly can't blame anyone for wanting nothing to do with him (I mostly avoided the song for months too before I fell for it), but its huge concentration of negatives feels a bit meaningless to me when presumably most are more for him than the song (though, granted, not as much so as not-even-a-UK-hit 'GUMMO' in the hatechart). At least I'm surprised he attracted so many when XXXTENTACION is in here too. I like the majority of the other songs so far but none are essential.

Posted by: danuary 13th January 2019, 03:04 PM

#45. French Montana (feat. Drake) - No Stylist

UK chart run: 21-26-29-19-20-23-21-21-22-62-x [10 weeks]
Points: +17 | Positive votes: 04 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: Dobbo [7 points]

Drake appears again, this time giving French Montana a hit, his second as lead artist after the massive 'Unforgettable'.

#44. J. Cole - KOD

UK chart run: 17-37-58-x [3 weeks]
Points: +19 | Positive votes: 03 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: Jade [10 points]

J. Cole's latest album provided him with three short-lived top 40 hits, and he's still yet to get a proper hit though is still a very popular rapper. This was the title track which helped it become his highest charting and also first top 20 hit.

#43. Eminem - Killshot

UK chart run: 13-20-27-41-57-72-x [6 weeks]
Points: +20 | Positive votes: 04 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: Jade [13 points]

Eminem's response to 'Rap Devil' managed to peak two places higher in the official chart and also got 20 more points than it here to also become Eminem's highest charting single in this countdown.

#42. Dave (feat. MoStack) - No Words

UK chart run: 18-22-23-23-23-26-26-40-17-21-20-24-24-23-58-56-61-73-74-x [19 weeks]
Points: +25 | Positive votes: 04 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: WhoOdyssey, Riser [5 points each]

Dave's first top 20 hit should have actually gone in the 2017 edition but it got overlooked, and it peaked in 2018 anyway. Dave had an excellent end to the year anyhow with 'Freaky Friday' going to #1 yet this still managed to outsell it in time for the EOY charts.

#41. Zayn - Let Me

UK chart run: 20-37-35-50-57-74-x [6 weeks]
Points: +28 | Positive votes: 03 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: ...ready for it [18 points]

It's easy to forget Zayn did have a top 20 hit last year with all the flopping he'd be doing, but yes this rather boring song did just about manage to go top 20. He hasn't seen the top 75 since.

#40. The Weeknd - Try Me

UK chart run: 17-x1-69-x [2 weeks]
Points: +28 | Positive votes: 04 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: coi [12 points]

The Weeknd's EP released in April last year produced three top 20 hits, though only one of them went top 10 and had decent longevity. This was the second-highest track in week one but subsequently got starred out the following week before returning for one more week.

Posted by: danuary 13th January 2019, 03:21 PM

#39. The Weeknd - Wasted Times

UK chart run: 18-30-44-73-x [4 weeks]
Points: +30 | Positive votes: 03 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: hlavkus [12 points]

And scoring two more points is the other album track of The Weeknd's, which had a little bit more longevity even accounting for the chart rules. The Weeknd will make one more appearance much higher up.

#38. XXXTENTACION - Moonlight

UK chart run: 31-38-58-x10-32-17-31-37-42-x [8 weeks]
Points: +32 | Positive votes: 03 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: Rush [13 points]

XXXTENTACION initially got this track into the top 40 upon his album release, before just months later when his death gave it a boost into the top 20 becoming the 2nd of 4 tracks to make the top 20 and his highest track in this countdown.

#37. Kanye West - Ghost Town

UK chart run: 17-44-x [2 weeks]
Points: +33 | Positive votes: 02 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: Dircadirca [18 points]

Only two people voted for this but that is enough for this to miss the bottom 20 as there are a lot of tracks racking up a low points total. This was the lowest charting of Kanye's album tracks but is seemingly deemed to be the best in this countdown.

#36. Khalid - Better

UK chart run: 44-31-24-20-22-18-19-24-16-18-15-20-23-33-66-54-57-... [17+ weeks]
Points: +39 | Positive votes: 06 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: DexTheHalls [12 points]

Khalid had a brilliant 2018 with a huge number one and two other long-running top 20 hits, this being the most recent of those, but seemingly not the... better (basil.gif) of the two as the duet with a female singer appears higher (who'd have thought?).

#35. Zac Efron & Zendaya - Rewrite the Stars

UK chart run: 46-26-19-19-19-16-20-19-20-22-x [10 weeks]
Points: +40 | Positive votes: 06 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: UltraReputation [18 points]

If there's one thing people remember about the music of 2018 it's the complete dominance of The Greatest Showman soundtrack which spent the whole year in the top 5 albums. Of the hit singles it produced two of them appear here, firstly this duet which (alongside 'The Greatest Show') gave Zac Efron his first chart hit since 'Breaking Free' in 2006.

#34. Not3s (feat. Mabel) - My Lover

UK chart run: 61-67-61-38-41-48-40-40-48-23-18-17-17-16-14-16-17-16-43-43-44-58-60-64-x [24 weeks]
Points: +42 | Positive votes: 08 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: Bjork [12 points]

The first of two Not3s and Mabel collabs, shortly after the single version with Mabel was released the song shot into the top 20 giving Not3s his first proper hit, though the OCC don't recognise it as being a hit for Mabel.

Posted by: JosephAvery 13th January 2019, 03:26 PM

No real losses so far except My Lover, that one was a really pleasant surprise and the Mabel mix is wub.gif

Posted by: danuary 13th January 2019, 03:51 PM

#33. Nicki Minaj (feat. Ariana Grande) - Bed

UK chart run: 20-30-35-31-27-27-31-38-23-39-43-50-x [12 weeks]
Points: +46 | Positive votes: 04 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: Jack, ...ready for it [13 points]

As we all know Nicki Minaj didn't have the best year although her US #2 album did manage to produce a top 20 hit thanks to Ariana Grande, though even Ari couldn't make this a major BuzzFave as it finishes in the bottom half of the scoreboard.

#32. Hugh Jackman, Keala Settle, Zac Efron, Zendaya and The Greatest Showman Ensemble - The Greatest Show

UK chart run: 40-23-23-23-21-21-21-20-21-23-x39-63-66-x1-25-38-... [14+ weeks]
Points: +48 | Positive votes: 05 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: UltraReputation [15 points]

The Greatest Showman is here again and with slightly more points than 'Rewrite the Stars' is the (almost) title track.

#31. David Guetta (feat. Anne-Marie) - Don't Leave Me Alone

UK chart run: 46-42-37-23-20-19-23-18-27-35-40-x [11 weeks]
Points: +48 | Positive votes: 08 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: MrAndrewMan [13 points]

David Guetta got two top 20 hits in 2018, impressive considering he's well past his peak. This one got a lot of collective groaning for featuring Anne-Marie but 8 people liked it enough to vote it up to 31st.

#30. Cheryl - Love Made Me Do It

UK chart run: 19-47-59-x [3 weeks]
Points: +48 | Positive votes: 09 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: Alex! [15 points each]

Cheryl came back to the chart after 4 years, returning with this which could only scrape the top 20, although most of us weren't expecting her to do any better. It remains to be seen whether she'll try again with another single or retire from music following this song's lack of success.

#29. Bad Bunny (feat. Drake) - MIA

UK chart run: 13-21-25-29-28-31-35-59-59-x [9 weeks]
Points: +50 | Positive votes: 07 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: Dobbo [12 points]

Bad Bunny is a huge star in Latin America though of course the only way he could get a hit here is to collab with high profile artists. Following his guest verse on Cardi B's 'I Like It' he released this which featured Drake, and the song is entirely in Spanish too.

#28. Travis Scott - Stargazing

UK chart run: 15-27-41-49-53-58-62-73-x [8 weeks]
Points: +55 | Positive votes: 04 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: hlavkus [18 points]

Travis Scott had a brilliant 2018, particularly in America but also here where he got three top 20 hits, two off the album's release. This is his sole entry in the countdown however as the other two made the top 10, and has performed very well for an album track here though it helps that he got two sets of +15s and a +18, so the position is rather fanbase driven. All the songs above this position however had at least 6 positive votes (and we're still yet to reach a song that received negative votes aside from 'FEFE', whose negative votes accounted for half of all the negative votes given).

Posted by: Bré 13th January 2019, 07:22 PM

Well I've lost 7/15 of my votes already as well as a few of the others that I thought might be worthy of points if I listened to them more (Kanye x2, Travis, J. Cole) coffee.gif no surprises though of course as pretty much the majority of the hip-hop songs on the list are already out. Glad to see that my top 2 are both still in it at least.

Even though I was one of the few who voted for 'Moonlight', I was actually not far off giving my -2 to 'Arms Around You' (moreso for the exploitation and general grossness of the circumstances surrounding its creation, but it's also a pretty terrible song on top of that) which would have seen it come last. But ultimately I couldn't take my -2 away from Florida Georgia Line. x

Posted by: dobbo 13th January 2019, 09:04 PM

It's only the 2 Drake songs that I really liked that are out so far so on the whole these results are going reasonably well to now!

Posted by: Jason 14th January 2019, 12:41 AM

I'm pleased so far with these results because I've lost only 2 out of my 15 votes: David Guetta (feat. Anne-Marie) - Don't Leave Me Alone and Cheryl - Love Made Me Do It.
Also surprised but pleased Dean Lewis is still to come. wub.gif

#54. Machine Gun Kelly - Rap Devil

UK chart run: 31-15-30-52-x [4 weeks]
Points: ±00 | Positive votes: 00 | Negative votes: 00

In the battle between MGK and Eminem it is Em who wins infinitely, as 'Rap Devil' also racked up no points here.
I love buzzjack’s insistence on defending non-LGBT people using the f word

#27. RAYE (feat. Mr Eazi) - Decline

UK chart run: 60-50-34-28-32-39-46-22-22-15-18-20-20-43-47-66-x [16 weeks]
Points: +59 | Positive votes: 06 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: cqmerqn [13 points]

Raye's career got off to a strong start featuring on two top 20 hits, before flopping with her own single, though this gave her a top 20 hit of her own not long afterwards. She hasn't seen the top 20 since however.

#26. Bebe Rexha (feat. Florida Georgia Line) - Meant To Be

UK chart run: 63-56-33-20-12-11-13-11-11-11-12-15-36-36-42-51-63-71-x1-72-x [19 weeks]
Points: +69 | Positive votes: 10 | Negative votes: 02
Top points from: WhoOdyssey [15 points]
Negative points from: Bré, Jade [-2 points each]

The unluckiest non-top 10 hit of the year had to be this, which spent 4 weeks at #11, denying Bebe of a fourth top ten hit. We also now reach another song that got negative votes, however these do not affect its position.

#25. Justin Timberlake - Filthy

UK chart run: 15-28-38-46-34-60-x [6 weeks]
Points: +75 | Positive votes: 10 | Negative votes: 01
Top points from: WhoOdyssey [13 points]
Negative points from: Jason [-2 points]

Justin Timberlake had a a lot of hype around this comeback, however this seemed to disappear as soon as this was released as the lead single, landing in at a disappointing #15 but not without its fair share of fans which get it into the top half of the scoreboard. It would have been a place higher if not for its sole negative voter Jason.

#24. Jonas Blue, Liam Payne & Lennon Stella - Polaroid

UK chart run: 55-57-48-44-16-13-12-12-23-31-x2-49-67-... [12+ weeks]
Points: +76 | Positive votes: 12 | Negative votes: 01
Top points from: Rush [12 points]
Negative points from: DexTheHalls [-2 points]

Jonas Blue had a good year with three top 20 hits, two of which peaked at #12. The first of these was a team up with Liam Payne who also has an entry higher up here and it also brought Lennon Stella her first chart appearance. Its two negative points do not affect its position.

#23. Ariana Grande - Santa Tell Me

UK chart run: 68-x153-60-29-32-28-x48-35-30-23-13-x [9 weeks]
Points: +78 | Positive votes: 14 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: UltraReputation, ...ready for it [12 points each]

Ariana Grande was undeniably one of the biggest stars of 2018, which helped her Christmas single reach the top 20 for the first time. Unless the OCC fiddle with the rules again, we can expect this to keep making the chart every December as it only gains popularity by the year.

#22. BlocBoy JB (feat. Drake) - Look Alive

UK chart run: 23-21-18-17-18-18-20-22-20-21-29-30-33-37-34-40-x [16 weeks]
Points: +82 | Positive votes: 08 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: Bré [18 points]

Relatively unknown rapper BlocBoy JB got more than a helping hand from Drake to give him his first and so far only hit single in 'Look Alive', a reasonably big top 20 hit in a year where Drake was also getting huge hits of his own. It is the highest of Drake's 4 appearances here.

Posted by: Campbell 14th January 2019, 01:10 PM

Love the effort that goes into things like this. Never voted, but would love for High Hopes to be near the top of this.

Posted by: danuary 14th January 2019, 06:00 PM

#21. M.O, Lotto Boyzz & Mr Eazi - Bad Vibe

UK chart run: 71-74-60-55-50-27-23-24-26-23-22-21-22-20-21-20-18-25-29-29-55-60-57-64-58-64-67-74-x [28 weeks]
Points: +85 | Positive votes: 11 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: Jack [18 points]

M.O got another #18 hit this year, nearly 2 years after their previous though with twice the longevity. Their follow-up only managed to scrape the top 100 however and one of their members got a prison sentence so they seem unlikely to make this countdown again.

#20. A$AP Rocky (feat. Skepta) - Praise The Lord (Da Shine)

UK chart run: 29-39-21-18-19-21-20-20-18-21-23-20-20-67-65-64-68-75-x [18 weeks]
Points: +86 | Positive votes: 10 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: coi, Riser, Bré [15 points each]

A$AP Rocky finally got a big hit of his own here after his only previous top 40 appearance was on a Selena Gomez single, with help from Skepta who didn't have any other top 40 hits this year either. It is the highest of the rap hits here, making it in the top 20 of this countdown.

#19. Khalid & Normani - Love Lies

UK chart run: 51-46-38-30-24-21-23-18-16-12-14-13-16-14-14-20-17-22-33-42-x2-70-x [21 weeks]
Points: +89 | Positive votes: 11 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: N-S, FleetSeb, JackJones [12 points each]

Khalid's other eligible hit of the year also makes the top 20, released for the film 'Love, Simon' and also being the first hit for Normani as a solo artist.

#18. Arctic Monkeys - Four Out Of Five

UK chart run: 18-50-x [2 weeks]
Points: +91 | Positive votes: 07 | Negative votes: 01
Top points from: WhoOdyssey, coi [18 points each]
Negative points from: Defaze [-2 points]

Arctic Monkeys' long-awaited return happened earlier in 2018 though the hype only seemed to last for a week as the lead single only managed to spend that long in the top 40 (alongside their two other eligible album tracks) as the album disappointed quite a few of their fans, but enough voted it here to get it to #18 where it officially peaked. A negative vote here does not affect their position.

#17. P!nk - A Million Dreams

UK chart run: 43-37-36-11-16-19-27-27-45-17-24-... [11+ weeks]
Points: +93 | Positive votes: 12 | Negative votes: 01
Top points from: Liam, FleetSeb [13 points each]
Negative points from: hlavkus [-2 points]

We weren't quite down with The Greatest Showman as one of the tracks from the reimagined version made it to #11, 11 places higher than the original version peaked. It was also P!nk's only hit of the year as her latest album era ended. One set of negative votes pushes it down a place.

#16. DJ Snake (feat. Selena Gomez, Ozuna & Cardi B) - Taki Taki

UK chart run: 30-33-21-22-20-17-15-19-19-27-x3-65-73-... [12+ weeks]
Points: +93 | Positive votes: 12 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: Jason [15 points]

DJ Snake returned to the chart with Cardi B who was seemingly everywhere this year, as well as Selena who'd had a quiet year aside from one other single yet to appear in this countdown, and big reggaeton artist Ozuna. The song topped the Spotify worldwide chart but could only make it to #15 in the UK chart.

Posted by: Bré 14th January 2019, 06:24 PM

Very happy with A$AP Rocky having the highest hip-hop track ~ #20 is still far too low but I'll take what I can get with this forum's member base. Surprisingly good showing for 'Look Alive' as well *.*

I don't particularly get 'Four Out Of Five', I've heard a couple of other songs from the album that I liked a lot more.

Posted by: gavindeejay 14th January 2019, 06:54 PM

It's a sign of me getting old that I don't know one of the songs between 57 and 36.

I'm surprised Meant To Be' is so low on here considering Buzzjack love BeBe Rexha. Hoping for Panic At The Disco! to win this!

It's functionally more a Florida Georgia Line song than a Bebe one. And FGL rightfully get a ton of hate.

#15. Jax Jones (feat. Mabel & Rich The Kid) - Ring Ring

UK chart run: 40-36-29-23-17-16-16-13-12-14-37-46-55-x [13 weeks]
Points: +96 | Positive votes: 13 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: sergejdordij98 [15 points]

Jax Jones had a similar 2018 to his 2017 with one top ten hit and another peaking just outside. Ring Ring is also Mabel's 2nd of 3 tracks in this countdown, her third will finish in the top ten.

#14. LSD (feat. Sia, Diplo & Labrinth) - Thunderclouds

UK chart run: 65-57-47-22-24-23-23-18-17-29-34-x [11 weeks]
Points: +99 | Positive votes: 11 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: DexTheHalls [13 points]

The 'supergroup' LSD didn't get off to the best start but eventually got themselves a hit thanks to a Samsung advert and heavy airplay. An EP was eventually released but this still remains their only UK hit.

#13. Liam Payne (feat. J Balvin) - Familiar

UK chart run: 34-31-25-20-21-15-18-14-16-14-20-30-32-54-60-66-x [16 weeks]
Points: +99 | Positive votes: 13 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: …ready for it [15 points]

Liam followed up his 50 Shades soundtrack hit with this which saw him jump on the Latin trend with J Balvin giving him a rather big hit but not before a subsequent flop EP.

#12. The Weeknd & Kendrick Lamar - Pray For Me

UK chart run: 15-13-11-12-14-17-21-23-x1-32-x [9 weeks]
Points: +111 | Positive votes: 13 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: DalekTurret32 [18 points]

The Weeknd teamed with Kendrick for this from the Black Panther soundtrack but couldn't quite push it into the top ten when Kendrick's other Black Panther soundtrack single did.

#11. Selena Gomez - Back To You

UK chart run: 39-29-27-23-13-14-16-19-21-24-50-58-70-69-x [14 weeks]
Points: +111 | Positive votes: 14 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: FleetSeb [18 points]

Very coincidentally Selena finishes on the same points total as The Weeknd, and just misses out on the top ten in this countdown with her 13 Reasons Why soundtrack single.

Come back tomorrow for the top 10 non-top 10 hits of 2018! One of these will get the title of honorary UK top ten hit...

Charli XCX & Troye Sivan - 1999
Cheat Codes & Little Mix - Only You
Dean Lewis - Be Alright
Dennis Lloyd - Nevermind
Ellie Goulding & Diplo - Close To Me (feat. Swae Lee)
M-22 (feat. Medina) - First Time
Mabel (feat. Not3s) - Fine Line
MK, Jonas Blue & Becky Hill - Back & Forth
Panic! At The Disco - High Hopes
Sigala (feat. Ella Eyre, Meghan Trainor & French Montana) - Just Got Paid

Posted by: dobbo 14th January 2019, 07:37 PM

Dean Lewis & Dennis Lloyd top 10. Okay then...

M-22 & Panic! are comfortably the best tracks remaining. It'll be Charli who wins this though unfortunately.

Posted by: Bré 14th January 2019, 08:44 PM

I quite like 'Be Alright' but very surprised that it's this high as I don't recall it getting a lot of love here apart from like 2 or 3 people!

Those Selena Gomez and Liam Payne songs are painfully bland, glad they missed the top 10. Cheat Codes still being to come though :/ that was another one that could have challenged for my -2. The rest of the remaining songs are all at least decent though ('Close To Me' I'm not massive on but it's ok, I like the rest).

I guess 'Pray For Me' was actually technically the highest hip-hop song, or at least the highest song by a primarily hip-hop artist even if the song itself is pretty poppy.

Dean Lewis over Selena? y’all need Jesus

#10. Dennis Lloyd - Nevermind

UK chart run: 65-51-55-61-55-45-45-45-42-47-39-32-32-29-24-25-25-19-19-17-20-20-21-24-25-63-68-x [27 weeks]
Points: +120 | Positive votes: 15 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: PeteFromLeeds [15 points]

Taking advantage of its Spotify playlist support, this became a real sleeper hit and eventually made the top 20 once airplay kicked in, though it's very likely to remain his only hit. It was also the only top 40 hit this year for an Israeli artist (their winning Eurovision entry could only make it to #48).

#09. Cheat Codes & Little Mix - Only You

UK chart run: 32-40-28-19-16-14-17-14-13-40-39-49-53-65-x [13 weeks]
Points: +121 | Positive votes: 15 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: Alex!, Defaze [18 points each]

Little Mix couldn't stay away from the charts for too long as in-between eras they got themselves on a dance hit for the first time with Cheat Codes. Though this couldn't quite reach the top 10 they had no problem getting a big hit afterwards with their proper lead single which made it to #2. Meanwhile Cheat Codes didn't have any other hits in 2018.

#08. MK, Jonas Blue & Becky Hill - Back & Forth

UK chart run: 52-47-46-37-21-17-16-15-14-12-14-37-74-x3-75-x [14 weeks]
Points: +122 | Positive votes: 14 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: danuary, sergejdordij98 [18 points each]

Now onto my personal fave of the lot, which finishes comfortably in the top 10 pleasingly. House legend MK teamed with Becky Hill again and this time they got a top 20 hit, helped by it following up MK's big top 10 and also the presence of Jonas Blue.

#07. Dean Lewis - Be Alright

UK chart run: 68-64-52-35-27-22-18-11-12-15-15-16-18-63-x [14 weeks]
Points: +127 | Positive votes: 10 | Negative votes: 02
Top points from: Bjork, PeteFromLeeds, Jason, JackJones [18 points each]
Negative points from: Dobbo, danuary [-2 points each]

Dean Lewis was one of the few Australian artists to make the UK chart this year, and got his first and so far only hit doing so. This song got the least amount of positive votes but was also given the joint most amount of +18s so it has a clear fanbase here, though a total of -4 negative points means it is moved down a place. biggrin.gif

#06. Ellie Goulding & Diplo - Close To Me (feat. Swae Lee)

UK chart run: 36-34-30-21-18-21-17-28-57-43-47-... [11+ weeks]
Points: +128 | Positive votes: 17 | Negative votes: 01
Top points from: cqmerqn [18 points]
Negative points from: Electroboy [-2 points]

Ellie Goulding released this as her comeback single which didn't get off to the best start considering she had been away for a while, but eventually worked its way into the top 20. The #5 song is well ahead so one negative voter does not affect its position.

This means five songs are left in contention and they will all be revealed later this afternoon, so make any predictions now! One of these will get the title of honorary UK top ten hit...

Charli XCX & Troye Sivan - 1999
M-22 (feat. Medina) - First Time
Mabel (feat. Not3s) - Fine Line
Panic! At The Disco - High Hopes
Sigala (feat. Ella Eyre, Meghan Trainor & French Montana) - Just Got Paid

It is worth noting no matter what wins here, it will be the first winner since 2013 (Arctic Monkeys) to feature a male artist, and there still is the possibility of an all-male act winning if 'High Hopes' wins, or a fifth consecutive year with no male vocals if 'First Time' wins.

Good top 5 left. Just not too keen on Just Got Paid. Sigala did so much better in his first 2 singles.

Posted by: danuary 15th January 2019, 06:31 PM

#05. Sigala (feat. Ella Eyre, Meghan Trainor & French Montana) - Just Got Paid

UK chart run: 51-37-33-17-15-14-12-12-13-11-43-42-73-x3-55-69-... [15+ weeks]
Points: +155 | Positive votes: 19 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: MrAndrewMan [18 points]

Leading us into the Sigala album (and becoming its 10th(!) single) was this which couldn't quite manage to become his 7th top 10 hit but did very well regardless. It also got Meghan Trainor a bit of relevancy after her flop singles and was Ella Eyre's 2nd hit of the year.

#04. M-22 (feat. Medina) - First Time

UK chart run: 62-60-53-36-33-26-24-31-24-28-24-25-22-26-20-24-26-24-71-72-x [20 weeks]
Points: +161 | Positive votes: 19 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: Dobbo [18 points]

Dance duo M-22 had been around for a few years but with no chart success until this was a surprise hit for them, bouncing around the lower end of the top 40 for a while before finally just getting into the top 20. It was also the second top 40 for appearance for Medina, impressively nine years after her first (which only went to #39).

#03. Mabel (feat. Not3s) - Fine Line

UK chart run: 32-22-17-17-16-14-11-11-14-15-15-35-42-69-x [14 weeks]
Points: +175 | Positive votes: 17 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: Riser, alby [18 points each]

Mabel followed up her breakthrough hit 'Finders Keepers' with two Not3s collabs, and after she featured for Not3s he returned the favour for her 2nd proper single which does a lot better in this countdown finishing at #3. It is also the highest #11 peaker in the countdown as it spent 2 weeks there, stuck behind 'For You' first, then (annoyingly) 'The Middle' in its second week.

#02. Charli XCX & Troye Sivan - 1999

UK chart run: 51-67-59-41-17-17-13-24-29-x2-47-60-... [11+ weeks]
Points: +227 | Positive votes: 22 | Negative votes: 01
Top points from: N-S, ElectroBoy, JosephAvery, Jade [18 points each]
Negative points from: cqmerqn [-2 points]

Charli XCX couldn't get any singles from either of her mixtapes to take off but before the year was out she did finally release a chart-tailored hit with the nostalgic dance-pop '1999'. This was also a duet with Troye Sivan who got his first top 20 hit with this after only managing to get as high as #38 before. The song finishes well ahead of 'Fine Line' but still doesn't manage to win here as...

#01. Panic! At The Disco - High Hopes

UK chart run: 70-x3-56-52-56-51-37-34-35-34-34-25-21-22-20-17-12-13-18-19-24-25-69-x6-42-45-... [24+ weeks]
Points: +259 | Positive votes: 23 | Negative votes: 00
Top points from: Cody Slaykali, Liam, DexTheHalls [18 points]

...it wasn't even close in the end and Panic! At The Disco is your winner!

Panic! were last seen in the top 40 in 2008 (when they still had more than one proper band member) with #13 hit 'Nine In The Afternoon' but 'High Hopes' was seemingly good enough to end Brendon's 10 year drought of hits, slowly climbing to #12. He of course had a big following in-between and the previous album spent very long in the chart, but it was this that finally got him another big hit single, and biggest yet, making the top 10 in many countries including America but just missing out here. It now gets the title of Honorary UK top 10 hit and is the second song by a male act to do so, following Arctic Monkeys' 2013 victory with 'Do I Wanna Know?'.

Impressively, with 31 voters (23 of those voting for this song), this song got 46.4% of its potential maximum points total! Thanks to all who voted, and this will return once again for 2019 (and I'd also like to revisit 2010 for completeness of the decade so I can then run a decade version, that one may happen in a few months).

At least we ended up with the best winner for this! Truly one of the biggest mistakes the UK has made chart-wise.

And the UK SUCKED last year in choosing hits, obvious exceptions aside.

Posted by: Bré 15th January 2019, 09:00 PM

Would not have predicted Panic! to win this at all, thought it would have been a shoo-in for Charli - really like both of the top 2 (and indeed 3rd and 4th, all 4 ranked highly for me) anyway!
