Day #1...
Favourite #1 of 2017

UltraReputation:

As if it could be anything else kink.gif Taylor returned with a bang in 2017 with one of her best lead singles Look What You Made Me Do, which became her first UK #1 and another #1 in America! I'm completely obsessed with this and this is my favourite #1 in forever, I've heard it around 600 times now!!! I stayed up waiting for this to premiere and this didn't disappoint at all and I legit played it on repeat all day the day it came out laugh.gif I love the lyrics, the pre-chorus is the highlight of the song and 'the old Taylor' part is iconic af. The video is also easily my favourite this year and is incredible *.* Taylor delivered again and this is legit one of my favourite Taylor songs ever ohmy.gif A well deserved #1 and a fab song.

Cameron

With a vocal performance like this, there is no wonder this is my favourite #1 of the year! Zara proved herself vocally (again) with this stunningly beautiful song. A heartbreaking video accompanying the track allowed the message to be taught clearly and hearing her sing this live made it click with me forever. wub.gif

Jonjo

The most recent #1 and by far my favourite of the year. Camila was always destined for solo success especially as she was touted by many to be the "star of 5H". She then released a few solo songs, which were nice, but not really fulfilling her full potential... That is until she dropped two more tracks. Both with a slightly more Urban edge but she managed to show promise and 'Havana' kept working it's way into my affections with each and every play. So to see this spend what is about to be it's 5th week at number 1, is not only pleasing as a Camila stan but also a success for pop music in general.

Day #2...
Favourite Musical Duo

Cameron:

This was a difficult one for me to pick. I settled with The Veronicas. I don't know what is is about this Australian duo, but I absolutely love them and their music. I remember the first time I heard 'Untouched' and thought it was from another Disney 'Star' going through the forced rock phase that Demi Lovato went through kink.gif . From then on, releasing bangers such as 'In My Blood' and 'If You Love Someone' has secured me as a fan. 'You Ruin Me' is what put them back on my radar after all these years. I am still waiting for 'Lolita' to be on UK iTunes... Please!!!

Jonjo

I struggled to think of a poppier duo that I like as much as I like these, but I couldn't. In fact, musical duos for the most part especially for pop duos are quite novelty, so it's hard to take them seriously. But I feel this band lean on the alternative rock, pop, rap, indie side of things. It's hard to just dump them into one genre, their songs just flow into different genres so seemlessly and impressively. It's why I have to choose them really. Both studio albums have been outstanding. These guys deserve all the success in the world and Tyler's voice.. heart.gif In fact, I am going as far as to say, he is the next Chester Bennington imo. His voice just transitions from screamo to soft to rap so flawlessly.

UltraReputation

The Veronicas are my favourite duo (You Ruin Me, Untouched, 4Ever and Lotita are all 12/10's <3) but Cam got there first so I'm gonna go with a current fave, country music duo and another pair of twin sisters, Ward Thomas! I really liked their first studio album but it was their second album, Cartwheels that got me obsessed with them. From the upbeat fun country Guilty Flowers to the amazing Carry You Home and fab album track highlights like Safe, this album has kept me hooked on them and I've listened to it repeatedly since last year! Their voices work so well together and I love their lyrics. Ward Thomas also released a covers EP earlier this year which slays and I love their version of 'Shine' by Years & Years!

Posted by: Jonjo 2nd December 2017, 04:05 PM

Trying to think if good pop duos was so hard lmao! :/

I wanted to go for a pure pop act like Veronicas, but Cam beat me to it. But it's ok, I slightly twisted the rules for a better option anyway

Day #3...
Favourite Trio of Singles released from one album.

Jonjo

Well... DUH. One of my all time favourite albums (my fave depending on what day it is) by one of my favourite artists and it's partly down to the singles run of Since U Been Gone > Behind These Hazel Eyes > Because Of You, all of which I am sure are in my top 15 of all time! It's the greatest singles run of all time. Just everything about this run is flawless! heart.gif
---
Cameron

This was so so so so so difficult! Jonjo beat me to it with Kelly and I wanted to try and have something different cry.gif . I think I am going to go with a Cameron favourite and pick Ariana Grande's yours truly era. 'Break Free', 'Love Me Harder' and 'One Last Time' as a trio are sublime. 'Problem' is also incredible out of all the singles released, I even still love 'Bang Bang' despite Jessica Cornish's inclusion. Ariana is a superstar.
---
UltraReputation

This was so tough! Breakaway is probably my ultimate as well but Jonjo beat me to that as well laugh.gif Then it's probably Speak Now's flawless single-run (Mine/Back To December/Mean) is definitely up there but I don't wanna use Taylor for every single answer I give! I was thinking of doing Paparazzi/Bad Romance/Telephone for Gaga but its kinda two albums so I decided no laugh.gif I also nearly went for Born To Die but in the end I've decided to go for the first three singles from Avril Lavigne's debut album 'Let Go'. Complicated remains an utter classic and one of my favourite songs of all time, Sk8er Boi was one of my main childhood bops and I still know every heard off by heart and get my life to it whenever I hear it and I'm With You is a stunning and heartfelt ballad with Avril storming the vocals and the lyrics are incredible and poignant. Three fabulous songs that show off different aspects of Avril's talents and a terrific back-to-back run of songs that still sound incredible 15 years later. <3

Great picks wub.gif

Day #4...
Favourite Male Song

Jonjo

My 2nd favourite song of all time, is 'Mr. Brightside', however, they are situated in the indie forum, so I have disqualified myself from using it as I have already twisted the rules slightly to include TØP so didn't want to push my luck. So I have gone for my favourite song by my favourite male artist, which is Justin Timberlake! The song is so beautiful and after being addicted to, but feeling slightly underwhelmed at the time with 'Suit & Tie', when this premiered as an instant grat, all doubts about his new album were cast to one side. What a storming pop ballad! So beautiful!

Ultrareputation

This was literally a tie between Jailhouse Rock/Smooth Criminal/Tiny Dancer (I'm not even sure if these are all even classified as pop laugh.gif) but I've gone for the latter. I'm not usually a fan of long songs but the way 'Tiny Dancer' builds makes it worth it. I love the relaxing instrumental and the chorus is one of those I can never refrain myself from singing-a-long to. I love the lyrics and I'd say this became my favourite song from a male after I watched 'Almost Famous', one of my favourite films ever. The song works so perfectly in the film and is one of the best uses I've seen of a song not specifically made for the film being used in a film if that makes sense! A beautiful classic that I could listen to over and over again on repeat. <3

Cameron

As expected, this category was a little bit more difficult for me to do. laugh.gif as obviously female voices are my favourite as I find it very difficult to find a male voice that I like... Anyway, most of you know how much I adore Lawson and how much I love Andy as a singer and a songwriter. Chapman Square was such an incredible era and I really could have picked When She Was Mine and Learn To Love Again too. Not to mention the tracks from Chapter 2! However, standing In The Dark really is one of my all time favs. It refuses to get old and I just love the lyrics and melody. I’m a sucker for male ballads that actually show emotion that is not forced. Honourable mentions to Hunter Hayes - I Want Crazy and Olly Murs - Busy!

Day #5...
Favourite Female Song

Cameron

Not putting a spoiler in for another door coming up kink.gif I have picked my 'second favourite female song' to make it nice and varied. Where can I start with queen Michelle McManus? What a song. That key change confirms why she is my pop idol, my vodka queen, my haggis goddess.

Ultrareputation

As with Cam, I've avoided spoilers for two songs that'll come up on future doors and I've also avoided Taylor here cos I don't want to overuse her! Instead I've gone for pop classic and one of the best songs of all time, Toxic <3 from the iconic production to the killer middle-8 and chorus, this is just one of the best crafted songs ever and a song I go back and listen to quite literally ALL the time. And the video is the definition of iconic. A masterpiece.

Jonjo

I've gone for my 2nd favourite as my fave song of all time is by a female and that is being used for another door! And yes, it's another Britney song, being used for this day! But this time it's the follow up to the pop classic 'Toxic'... 'Everytime'. Such a beautifully haunting and chilling pop ballad. Britney completely owned it. heart.gif From the first time I heard the song, until very recently, it was always top 2 in my affections as best song of all time. Such a classic.

Day #6...
Favourite Live Performance

Cameron

Without a doubt, it HAS to be THISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS. I KEEP CALLING CALLIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII-IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII-IIIIIIIIIIIIIINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

Holy mother of vocals.

Jonjo

I didn't really fancy doing Britney again, so I went for Gaga's most iconic performance and actually, possibly my fave live performance of all time. WHAT A SONG. WHAT A STORY. WHAT A PERFORMANCE. Everything about this performance truly put Gaga on my radar! wub.gif

UV

As with Jonjo, I didn't really fancy doing Britney again straight away so I've gone with Adele's iconic BRITS performance from 2011 that catapulted 'Someone Like You' to becoming the biggest hit of the year and sending Adele stratospheric. There's a reason why this performance is so acclaimed, Adele's vocals are just pitch perfect and with just the backing piano and nothing else, the performance works perfectly. The emotion of the song really comes through and I remember crying my eyes out when I first watched this. A masterclass of a performance. <3

Day #7...
Underrated Bop

UltraReputation

I could have chosen so many songs for this but considering I go back to this all the time and it made my top 40 most played songs of the year on Spotify again this year, I'm going with this 2013 album track outtake from Demi as my underrated bop! Something That Were Not is actually my favourite Demi song, a carefree fun pop song that I always bop to with a killer chorus. The verses bop and the chorus goes off, I really wish this was a single and smashed and this also seems to be pretty underrated amongst the Demi fanbase. </3 So so good. <3

Jonjo

At the time, I was convinced that this Michelle Williams song was gonna be a smash. Unfortunately it wasn't. It really annoys me as her album 'Unexpected' is my fave DC related album. Yes that includes new Beyoncé... this song is SO good and if it's not the inspiration behind Burkey's All Night Long, then it's just a HUGE coincidence that it's very similar...

Cameron

Since leaving her record label, Gabrielle Aplin has made it her goal to save pop music by releasing tracks better than her entire second album. Waking Up Slow has been an incredible song to end the year with after releasing the Avalon EP. Both Gabrielle and this song have been overlooked on the site and it is just not good enough! Soz... BUT other than that, enjoy this underrated bop wub.gif cheer.gif

Posted by: *Tim 7th December 2017, 12:12 AM

Day #8...
Favourite Music Video of 2017

UltraReputation

I really couldn't do anything else for this despite already using LWYMMD on an earlier day! By far away my favourite video of 2017 (other ones that slay include Havana, Ready For It, New Rules, Chained To The Rhythm, Praying, Want You Back & Green Light, it's been a v. strong year for music videos), LWYMMD is an expensive and fabulous looking masterpiece with many fab easter eggs throughout the video. Taylor looks stunning in the video and I love all the different scenes. The scene with the snake, robbing the streaming company and the army are probs my fave and all the effort with clothing/make-up is incredible. My fave scene is ofc Taylor killing the old Taylor's, it's such a cleverly done scene and is memorable and effective. My love for the video increased after watching the BTS videos Taylor posted. One of my favourite music videos of all time, let alone this year <3

Jonjo

My fave video is actually Logic, but he's the wrong genre for this countdown. So I went for BTS - DNA instead! I could've been a bit more predictable and gone for Dua or 'Power'/'Touch' by Little Mix (stfu the Touch video is incred) but decided not too as the video to 'DNA' is so perfectly executed. So much colour, insane choreography (that DNA move *.*) and just all round a well directed and shot video!

Cameron

Obviously, this is quite a new music video so it wasn't going to be my original choice (Power says HAIIII) but oh my god!!! I have not felt this emotional about a music video for a good while now. The storytelling and the overall visuals of the music video are heartbreaking and have cause so much emotional distress for me cry.gif ps Tim triggered

No Dua Lipa again. 🙃

FLOPPPPP

Day #9...
Favourite Girlband Song

Cameron

Despite not being the rabid Sats loon I was when I joined the site ( heehee.gif ) Issues has firmly secured its place in my favourite songs of all time. It was the first 'proper' song I had heard by The Saturdays and as you all know I love ballads. The song has refused to get old for me and still sounds as beautiful as it did in 2008. Vevo needs to sort their shit out and get rid of the If This Is Love thumbnail...
Honorable mentions go to 'Touch', 'Secret Love Song' and 'Wake Me Up' (if Sam puts Pure Shores I am done).

UltraReputation

This was hard af! Just missing out were: Forever Is Over, Power, Love Me Like You, Move, Untouched, Pure Shores (be quiet Cam x) and Lighthouse off the top of my head. But the ultimate girlband song for me has to be one of the biggest ever girlbands defining tunes, Biology by Girls Aloud! The song is heavily-led by Nadine (which is always a good thing) and the production is killer. I adore the non-conventional style of the song and I always bop to this and its a perfectly crafted pop song.

Jonjo

Not only is this the greatest Girlband song in existence, but it's one of the absolute best pop songs of all time. It's literal pop perfection! It's everything you'd expect, want & need in a pop song. It's just helped that it's a song by the biggest girl group of all time.

---

DAY 10 IS A BIGGIE. SO HYPE FOR TOMORROW!!

Day #10...
Favourite Song Ever!

Cameron

Well... This is quite a moment isn't it? I was never quite sure what my favourite song of all time would be. I could easily have gone down the Buzzjack route and picked All This Time, but I thought it would be best if I had a good think about this one. I would like to start with my other honourable mentions for It's All Coming Back To Me Now (Meatloaf and Marion Ravens version) Battlefield (Jordin Sparks) and Too Little Too Late (Jojo) which are all incredible. The funny story is that you know how much us pop mods love Kelly Clarkson, but I never realise how much I love her until album release time. Especially if I am drunk... Fond memories of this song are me lying on my best friends kіtchen floor drunk crying to this because Kelly hit her high notes (in the studio version... I know...) and watching the music video over and over as a child finding out why she ran away in her wedding dress. A vocal performance that outshines all your basic favs firmly makes this my favourite song ever.

Jonjo

It was only until the beginning of this year that I actually deemed this song to be my favourite song of all time. It really hit me, during 'Statements' in MelFest, that this has withstood the plays, time and hype for me. Majority of the hype was from myself, granted. But it was all with good reason. It's an absolute monster of a pop song. So euphoric and huge. Even still to this day! Every time I hear this, the volume goes to full. Seriously. I still go batshit every time I do hear it. Gah. Flaw. Less. heart.gif

Ultrareputation

And let's make it two mods going with a song by Kelly from the Breakaway era as their favourite song ever. Because Of You has been my favourite song since basically I pretty much got into music and still remains my favourite today. Kelly's vocals are phenomenal on this and utterly heartbreaking, the part before the final chorus ALWAYS gets me. I usually will end up crying when listening to this and lyrically the song can't be topped for me. This is just a perfect ballad, a perfect song and my ultimate favourite song ever. <3

Posted by: Jonjo 10th December 2017, 09:06 AM

Should have just renamed this as "Favourite Kelly Clarkson Song" 😂😂

Posted by: SGrey 10th December 2017, 09:36 AM

Great to see how much love Kelly gets on here! wub.gif

Posted by: allfiredup93 10th December 2017, 01:16 PM

All the love for Kelly! ❤️ BTHE was actually the song that sold Kelly to me! (Liked SUBG but this one done it for me). I remember first hearing it at 3am as I was awake with a toothache, so I put the music channels on and this played. Loved the song and video straight away ❤️

Posted by: TS0301 10th December 2017, 01:42 PM

Love Kelly but Euphoria wins this one wub.gif

Posted by: Mistletheo 10th December 2017, 02:28 PM

All of the singles from 'Breakaway' are excellent, possibly the best run of singles from an album this century (my fave is the title track), but I prefer "Euphoria" to your two picks tongue.gif It took a while for me to succumb to Jonjo's hype but seeing her performance at the Eurovision semi final truly sold it to me wub.gif

Posted by: UltraReputation 11th December 2017, 03:19 PM

Day #11...
Should Have Been A Single.

Cameron

What the actual f*** was going through her head when picking the final single from the Revival era? Obviously, Kill Em With Kindness is a jam, but Sober shits all over it. I am sorry but it is the truth. This track is POP PERFECTION with Selena actually showing she can belt quite a fair bit. The 'buh buh buhs' are always stuck in my head. I am addicted!

Jonjo

A day late heehee.gif but this is one of my all time favourite songs by one of my all time favourite artists. It really should have been a single from the 'My December' album, but her label messed that era up so much for her. This song is so hauntingly beautiful and emotional. It came out at such a pivotal moment for me. heart.gif

Ultrareputation

This would have gone to either 'Cruel' (Foxes) or 'New Romantics' (Taylor Swift) but they were eventually singles, albeit FAR too late. So I'm gonna go with what I still wish was the LG3 lead single and one of my favourite Gaga songs ever, Gypsy <3 This is just a classic Lady Gaga anthem and easily my favourite song from Artpop, the middle-8 slays and the chorus goes off *.*
(Me being the only person to not go for a song called Sober this round laugh.gif)

Day #12...
Favourite Music Video Ever.

Cameron

This one has taken a lot of thinking. I will be 100% honest and admit that I am still unsure if this is actually my favourite music video ever, but there is just something so charming and beautiful about it. The story is what really gets me the most, the whole 'losing her imaginary friend when she dies at the end of the video (well that is what I interpret it as)' breaks my heart. Zara and MNEK both look incredible in their solo shots - there is something about videos shot in Iceland which are just so beautiful!

Jonjo

Could've gone predictable with this but I kinda wanted a little swerve. So I opted for 'Picking Up the Pieces' by Paloma. Not only is it her best song, but it's such a fantastic, well directed and shot video. So chilling and haunting without being scary. The whole waxwork thing is stunningly done! Very underrated as a song and video imo.

Ultrareputation

I've already done Toxic & LWYMMD on other days, I don't want to overuse Taylor, actually scrap that. Blank Space is definitely one of my favourite music videos of all time, the concept is great and is executed perfectly. Taylor is fab in the video and the video became instantly iconic on release, I still use gifs from the video so often *.* I adore the storyline and the hitting the car/stabbing the cake>>>>>>>life.

Day #13...
Unlucky for some... But not in this case! An unusual Collaboration that worked so well

Cameron

I don't know, I just find it so unusual seeing a band and a soloist collaborate. I wasn't expecting this to hit me as much as it did back when it was released. This was during my phase as a MASSIVE Demi Lovato fan so of course, I was hyped for this.

Jonjo

Gone for another "deep cut" but this time from Leona Lewis. We had heard her on a Ryan Tedder song a few times before, but when it came to actually having a song where he shared vocals and the rest of the band putting their usual OR spin on things, I wasn't expecting it to happen. When it did, I was the happiest Ryan Tedder stan in the world. What a powerful collab wub.gif

Ultrareputation

I don't know if this can quite be classed as pop but I'm struggling to think of any other unusual collaborations that I love. This came out of nowhere for me and are two artists I would have never expected to have collaborated but this just works so well. Beyonce and Arrow's vocals compliment the production perfectly and this still remains fab today.

Posted by: Dexton 13th December 2017, 08:22 AM

Somebody To You is good but nothing special, same for Leona Lewis x One Republic (even though I LOVE OR). Naughty Boy definitely wins this wub.gif

Other "Unusual collaborations that worked so well" that I can think of would probably be:
- Owl City x Carly Rae Jepsen - Good Time
- Pink x Lily Allen - True Love (this isn't exactly unusual, but no one was expecting it so I guess it still counts)
- Zayn x Sia - Dusk Till Dawn
- Zedd x Logic x X Ambassadors - Transmission (I know this isn't at all Pop but it's still a fav of mine from 3 wildly different genres. Emphasis on the unusual here kink.gif)
- LuvBug x Scouting For Girls - Best Is Yet To Come (see above)

Day #14...
Favourite Song From The Movies

Cameron

You can all hate me, but this such a bloody tune. Should have won bjsc when Aquafina entered it!!!1 Actually, I was torn between this and Breaking Free. laugh.gif I also nearly put Lea Salonga - Reflection from Mulan too. I don't know what it is about Gotta Go My Own Way, but I love it.

Jonjo

I go through stages as to what my favourite movie song is. So I shall just use one of my favourites and one of the greatest of all time. This song gives me so much feels! From THAT opening to the very end. It's all just a spine tingling moment. I am super stoked and excited to be seeing the stage show in March. And I just think this will be a huge moment for me to witness. Aaaahhh.

Ultrareputation

I'm surprised we somehow got this far without me choosing this masterpiece and one of the best songs of all time. Idina's powerhouse vocals completely slay everyone and everything, I adore the lyrics, its a sing-a-long anthem and the song and scene works so perfectly in the context of the film and all this stuff coming together makes this easily my favourite song from the movies of all time.

Day #15...
Album Of the Year

Cameron:

I had originally put Kelly Clarkson - Meaning Of Life in the EOY thread in the lounge, however, I completely forgot So Good was released this year (flop mod and stan). I'll be honest, like most of the site, I was a tad disappointed with the quality of So Good after waiting so long for Zara to finally release her international album. However, with that being said, I have grown to LOVE the album and seeing her perform most of it live was obviously the selling point. The singles are all bops, So Good (the song) is so underrated as it jams. TG4M deserved better and Sundown deserves a remix with Nicki Minaj or something. I Can't Fall In Love Without You was something I was a bit meh on at first but hearing it live changed my mind. Don't Let Me Be Yours deserved radio plays too. Bye.
---
Jonjo:

Couldn't be anything else really for me. Just been trying to think of all the pop albums I've listened to on repeat and only had a handful... Been such a poor year for pop albums imo. sad.gif But everyone has that one artist who can change things and not let you down, for me it's Kelly heart.gif 'Meaning Of Life' didn't really impact on first listen like usual with her albums, but it's Kelly, I couldn't give up. I'm so glad I didn't! 'I Don't Think About You' has always been the highlight for me. But 'Heat', 'Move You', 'Medicine' and 'Don't You Pretend' are also extreme highlights. It is also her best album, vocally!
---
UltraReputation:

What a shock ohmy.gif My favourite album of 2017 obviously has to be Taylor's sixth masterpiece (with melodrama and lust for life completeing 2017's holy trinity). From album highlight and anthemic Don't Blame Me to songs that completely go off such as I Did Something Bad, this album has a mixture of everything and slays. Taylor's lyrics are great as ever (as especially highlighted on New Years Day's hook) and even though it takes time getting used to it, the production also slays! An amazing album and one I've raved about loads ofc on here <3

Day #16...
A song everyone must hear before the new year

Cameron:

Probably my favourite artist to discover this year. Sigrid has provided bop after bop and really knows how to produce pop perfection. I absolutely adored Don't Kill My Vibe and Plot Twist was a JAM! (Her EP is also really great!) Strangers hit me instantly and her performance on Sounds Like Friday Night sealed its fate as one of my favourite songs of Q4. Her vocals are so raw, I love them and her stage presence is second to none. Honorable mention goes to Hailee Steinfeld - Let Me Go!

Jonjo:

A song that is fast creeping up to become a fave of mine recently. It's by new boy band PRETTYMUCH and it's called 'No More'. The whole song is is just so slick and smooth. It really reminds me of what *NSync (best boy band ever) would come out with if they were starting out today. It's very much one of their more Urban tracks mixed in with something 5H would record. Really willing this to become a hit in the new year!

UltraReputation:

If you need a killer pure pop perfection bop before the year ends, Raincheck is the song you need to hear! Some of you would've heard this through BJSC but for those who don't participate in that and like pop, I highly recommend this. The chorus completely goes off and this is just one of those songs that you will have stuck in your head for ages!

Tad early for tomorrow (by 20 mins soz)

Posted by: SGrey 16th December 2017, 07:12 AM

Really liked Strangers when Sigrid was on SLFN but her facial expressions in the video are awful!

Posted by: JosephCarey 16th December 2017, 03:46 PM

No More is absolutely brilliant, their best track so far!!

Posted by: MerryFlynnmas 16th December 2017, 03:54 PM

Great album picks of the year!! Even if I think Kelly's one is one of her more weaker efforts but reputation and So Good are amazing.

Also, shocked Cameron didn't choose Bratz so good for movie song ohmy.gif

Day #17...
Favourite lyric from a song

Cameron:

This one was rather difficult to pick because I love so many songs. As you all know, Gabrielle Aplin is one of my favourite artists and her songwriting abilities are just exceptional. She is currently saving pop music with her EP's which y'all overlook because of your basic taste... Anyway, I am going to be a bit of a 'Typical White Girl' and go for a cringy line you would find on Tumblr but the opening lines to Home remain my favourite.
"I'm a phoenix in the water, a fish that's learned to fly". I just feel that it symbolises breaking free of the day-to-day routine that is expected of you and encourages us to not be afraid to move out of our comfort zones in life. It shows freedom and conveys the ability to feel comfortable in the skin we are in. I feel this is a message that is particularly important on this site given all our insecurities.

Jonjo:

Lyric: "Why can't we be like that? Wish we could be like that. "

I couldn't continue further without featuring my Queens. 'Secret Love Song' has always been a firm favourite of mine, but then again, I'm a sucker for a huge, powerful pop ballad. This song is one of the most special songs in pop, in the last 10 years. The message is super powerful and 100% clear. The lyric I chose in particular is simple but powerful.

UltraReputation:

Lyric: Hey you call me up again just to break me like a promise, so casually cruel in the name of being honest.

Oops it's Taylor for me again today kink.gif Tbh I don't really have a certain lyric that's my favourite so I've gone for a lyric that always breaks me when I hear it </3 This is the highlight of one of Taylor's best songs and the raw emotion in this lyric always gets me. Taylor's voice breaking is heartbreaking and the lyric just hits me personally so hard, it's devastating but relatable and true af. One of the best lyrics ever from a masterpiece <3

Posted by: Liаm 17th December 2017, 02:27 AM

All Too Well is one of the best written songs of all time and that's on that *.*

Posted by: Jonjo 18th December 2017, 08:02 AM

Day #18...
Favourite Song From A Musical

Cameron:

Well, I could be basic and pick With You from Ghost seeing as it was my favourite before the Simon Cowell heard it and made every reality tv contestant from the past 5 years sing it... (Sam Bailey's 'version...' LordT) So I tried to be a tad inspired for this one. My second favourite is actually Someone Like You from Jekyll & Hyde. This is actually something that I sang way back in high school for my Higher Music singing exam which I got an A in... (New Michelle McManus) I just love the lyrics and it has a key change and is a power ballad which is my thing as we all know. Also if you're listening to it, in singing exams in school you're only meant to sing a section of each song and one in full and the examiner cut me off at 2:26. I was FUMING laugh.gif
---
Jonjo:

I was gonna go for one that's been made into a movie or a movie musical (like La La Land) but I opted for a traditional broadway musical number instead. 'It's Quiet Uptown' is taken from the show 'Hamilton', and I think it might be one of the most beautifully tragic songs, I have ever heard. Every time I listen to this, I tear up and cry. That's even without seeing the show. It's just so stunning and emotionally charged, there's simply no way you can get through this song without crying, imo. Also helps that they released a "mixtape" of their Hamilton songs where the idea was to get stars like Alicia Keys, Sia, Usher, Kelly C etc.. And turn them into radio hits. Kelly Clarkson got this very song. Yeah, R. I. P. ME.
---
UltraReputation:

I was going to go with a song from a proper musical (probably seasons of love from rent, defying gravity from wicked or on my own from les miserables) but I realised this is my last chance to include la pa land and I couldn't go through this advent calendar without including a song from one of my favourite films ever! City of stars is a fabulous song, I adore the dreamish production and Ryan & Emma's vocals go so well together! The lyrics are fab and there's a reason why rhisbwon an Oscar <3

Day #19...
A cover as good as the original

Cameron

Quite a controversial category here ohmy.gif... I was originally going to go for Gabrielle Aplin's cover of The Power Of Love but I thought people might drag on here (idk) so I decided to go with one of my favourite songs which is Meatloaf and Marion Raven's cover of It's All Coming Back To Be Now (a song that was originally written for Meatloaf apparently!) Absolutly love this cover and since my mum is a massive Meatloaf fan I remember hearing it quite a few times when she played Meatloafs CD's on her CD player laugh.gif. I feel the song is so much better as a duet and adore the blend of their vocals. Massive honourable mention to Mandy Moore's cover of Only Hope. The song was recorded for A Walk To Remember and is a cover of Switchfoot.

Jonjo

I have obviously chosen this. I love a good female vocal. I love ballads. I love the original to this (it's one of my all time faves, so this is a HUGE compliment). I love a good choir key change. Just everything about this version is a lesson in how you take the original and make it so different, that you literally cannot compare the two. Ever since her live lounge of this song, this has always been on notice. It was an incredibly smart move to record a studio version and release it in time for Christmas. So beautiful wub.gif

UltraReputation

I wanted to go with a cover that I prefer to the original version so I was between this and Don't Stop Believing by Glee. I really dislike the 1975 but somebody else is their most beta blend song. However Verite's cover made me fall in love with the song as the pulsing poppish production gives this the boost it needs and reminds me a lot of talking body by tove lo! I love verite's voclss and this cover slays, so much so that I didn't even realise it was a cover when I first heard it

Day #20...
Favourite Studio Vocal

Cameron

So many tracks I could pick for this, but I had to go with one of my all-time favourite vocalists - Jojo! Obviously, her songs released as a teenager were incredible but I had to pick a song from the Tringle (? laugh.gif) of singles she released before her comeback album Mad Love. Say Love could very easily have been put there because her vocal runs are INSANE on the track, however, Save My Soul is where it's really at! What a vocal performance! So much power and emotion in her voice. It is truly spectacular *.*

Jonjo

I'm not actually sure what my favourite studio vocal is. But I think this is up there as one of them. Just because I think Justin utilises his voice the best in this song and you can tell just how much passion he's put into it. His performance at the BRITS 2013 is one of my fave vocal performances too. So flawless wub.gif

UltraReputation

As with Jonjo, I'm also not sure what my favourite studio vocal is. So I'll go with the utter classic of Let It Go again as Idina's vocals on the track are completely flawless and that high note>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>everything else to ever exist. *.*

Day #21...
Favourite Album Of All Time

Cameron:

Oh shit, this is so difficult. I really have no idea what to put here because I could go for a classic or I could go for something newish which has floored me. I'm going to go for English Rain by, you guessed it, Gabrielle Aplin. What an emotional experience English Rain is. So much beautifully written songs with the most angelic vocals imaginable. Gabrielle picked the perfect set of singles from the album with Please Don't Say You Love Me being my absolute fav. Salvation, Home and Panic Chord are also 11/10 moments idec. November and How Do You Feel Today would be my next single picks with Human and Keep On Walking giving me warm feelings inside. If it wasn't just solely pop I would have considered Aquarius by Tinashe for this as it is literally debut album perfection. Tinashe deserves so much recognition (off Buzzjack) and I just hate that this album has been overlooked. Elina Born - Elina Born, Lauren Aquilina - Isn't It Strange, Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway and The Saturdays - On Your Radar are also honourable mentions.
---
Jonjo:

It's always a toss up between this album and Kelly's 'Breakaway' for me. But Kelly has had a lot of love in this countdown so I have chosen to represent 'Blackout'. One of the most influential pop albums this side of the millennium. Her pinnacle moment. I love how recording this album was essentially therapy for her during 2007. I might even go as far as saying it probably helped to save her life. That year was such a hard year for Brit fans. But she did it. She made it through the year and gave us her best album to date. Fantastic.
---
UltraReputation:

Oh shit, this is so difficult (x2). I have loads of favourite albums of all time but I always struggled choosing my ultimate favourite! So I've gone with probably my favourite album from my favourite singer, Taylor Swift! Speak Now is Swift's third album and its a modern masterpiece. The album is terrifically written (and every track is written solely by Taylor, a lyrical queen, and she was only 20 as well when this came out which is just crazy at how good of a songwriter she already was then *.*) and the production (by Nathan Chapman) also slays me. The singles from the album also slay; Mine is one of my favourite Taylor songs ever and is pop-country heaven, Back To December is gorgeous and heart-breaking and have some of Taylor's strongest lyrics, Mean is a pure-country BOP and again the lyrics slay, The Story of Us is a fab track and Sparks Fly also slays, especially the tour version <3 The album tracks are also such big highlights. From the beauty of Long Live (the lyrics are up there with Taylor's best) to violin-backed masterpiece Haunted to catty but fun Better Than Revenge, this album slays me. Though my favourite ofc is the six minute masterpiece 'Enchanted', which is possibly my favourite ever Taylor song let alone my highlight from Speak Now! The way the song builds is sfg, Taylor's vocals are incredible and the lyrics are just stunning. If only this album didn't have a certain song on it, this would have been such an easy decision for my favourite album of all time. My honorable mentions (in no order): Taylor Swift - 1989, Taylor Swift - Reputation, Lana Del Rey - Born To Die, Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence, Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway and Lily Allen - It's Not Me It's You are also honourable mentions (possibly Melodrama & Lust For Life as well but I think both are just a bit too new atm, and Frozen/La La Land if were counting movie soundtracks).

Save My Soul <3333333 Why was that not JoJo's proper comeback single and #1 for 12 1/2 weeks, that song alone was entirely worth the wait wub.gif

Day #22...
Guilty pleasure

Cameron:

I know most people would put a proper cheese fest for a guilty pleasure (and Michelle McManus x) but I decided to go for a song that most of my friends would probably slag me for if I put on at pre's so I went for a proper 2000 bop from Buzzjack favourite - Delta Goodrem! Lost Without You is such an incredible track and obviously, in today's society, it would be panned as cringy and would flop horribly. It is so stereotypical noughties but it is just toooooooo gooooood wub.gif

Jonjo:

I hate the term "guilty pleasure" laugh.gif You like what you like. But I guess in the sense of "liking something which nobody else seems to like, I would choose 'Baby' by Justin Bieber. It's a genuine bop and as irritatingly repetitive as it is, it worms it's way into your head. It doesn't deserve the hate it gets, even though I can kinda see why it gets hate. But yeah, pure and utter pop joy!

UltraReputation:

I have far far too many guilty pleasures that I listen to all the time kink.gif laugh.gif I very nearly went for Livin La Vida Loca here but instead I've gone for iconique Shrek classic All Star <3 I always get my life to this and bop to it whenever I listen and this is low-key such a tune <3

Day #23...
Favourite Christmas music video

Cameron:

To some, this may be considered boring, but I love this video. Ariana has been one of my favourites since I eagerly waited for The Way countdown on Twitter, so seeing her being herself in a music video is so joyous to see! Ariana having fun with her dancers (and best friends) taking the piss out of each other just for Christmas fun is wonderful to see. With added bloopers what isn't there not to love?

Jonjo:

Struggled for this one, as I don't think about the music videos for xmas songs much for some reason laugh.gif but this video is always really good fun. Shouldn't be too surprising when its a Comic Relief single iirc. Light hearted, funny, Christmassy... perfect.

UltraReputation:

And let's choose Idina again *.* This is easily my favourite Christmas video as most of the others are pretty forgettable unfortunately sad.gif This video is so cute and the aesthetics of the video slay me. I love the Gatsby-ish WB logo opening and the video is cute, fun, ADORABLE and Christmassy so it ticks every box. heart.gif

It's no Tom Jones & Cerys!!

Jesus Bieber looks so young in that Baby video!!

Day #24...
Your #1 Christmas Cracker

Cameron:

As you all already know, The Grinch is my all-time Christmas fav! So it is no surprise that Where Are You, Christmas? is picked as my #1. Faith's vocal performance is just beautiful and the song is perfect for describing the period where you doubt Santa's existence but don't want to give up on Christmas. It hoenstly breaks my heart and gets me emotional. sad.gif

Jonjo:

Ever since I was a kid, this has always been a fave of mine and with each passing year, it solidifies itself as my absolute favourite. It's so joyous, heart warming, charming and it has such an irresistable hook and carefree pop melody! All time classic heart.gif

UltraReputation:

As much as I adore One More Sleep and others, nothing could come close to Queen of Christmas Mariah for me as AIWFCIY is still the ultimate Christmas song <3 I always have this on repeat around this time of year and this is just an upbeat, fun and christmassy masterpiece. <3

And that concludes our Pop Advent Calendar. cheer.gif

We would like to thank you all for reading and following this thread. Thanks specifically to all of you who have found the time to comment on this. It was so much fun to do. wub.gif

Wizzard for me from the final day - haven't really heard much of the Faith Hill Christmas track although it's well liked in here!

Posted by: PaulM1983 24th December 2017, 11:13 AM

Omg a massive yes at Meat Loaf/Marion Raven's "It's All Coming Back To Me Now". What a song and it works so beautifully as a duet. I'm a huge Meat Loaf fan and you're right, this song was written for him originally by his long time collaborator, Jim Steinman, before going to Celine back in the day. It's such a shame his health has deteriorated so much and his voice is well and truly shot. His live shows were really something to behold. Out of everyone I've ever seen live, I've never seen anyone give it all on the stage like Meat.

And as for Leona's Run, it's practically flawless. Her performance of it on the X Factor is one of the best live performances I've ever seen. She was at her absolute best and was vocally untouchable. And when the choir appeared for the massive final chorus, I still get goosebumps. That will forever be her finest moment.
